I didn't know what to expect when I walked into an old Mexico ornate dining room. The wait service was excellent. We had one minor food problem that was corrected immediately and graciously. The three of us had very different meals. All were excellent, with the red sauce being a big hit. The price was the next surprise. Very reasonable. We will be back. read more

On bad reviews, you know how people write "if I could give it 0 stars, I would"? Well I would give this place TEN stars if Yelp allowed it, or even 11 for us Tappers. This place serves fabulous food, seasoned magnificently, and served in abundance. Don't believe any of those "competitor" reviews. Two words: La Botana. My wife and I stumbled onto this place, and then onto the best fajita-style meal we've ever had. At $30 for two, it's the best value you'll find in the Metroplex. In total we get SIX hardy meals out of this order, taking home literally pounds of food after we're stuffed. The steak and chicken fajitas are tender, the sausage is NOT kielbasa, and the shrimp are jumbo. What breaks this out of the ordinary, though, is the chef's seasoning... you can snack on cold bits right out of the refrigerator, and you'll say "yummm". We've been here 10 times in 5 months, and although we mean to try their many other specialties, so far we've stuck with La Botana. We DID try something different on our last visit... our sweet waitress Gabby told us about a cinnamon-flavored Bundt cake with ice cream. I can't remember the name of it, but I sure remember it was delicious. I know I write like a shill but I don't even know anyone associated with this restaurant. I'm just ecstatic when I find a local business that outshines all the others. This is my and my wife's go-to restaurant of any variety. On our first visit, we admitted we were new to the area and they treated us like family. 9 visits later, we feel just as comfortable there. On one visit, my wife ordered a $2 margarita - delicious. Yes, happy hour but who can charge just $2 for a full-size margarita these days? For the record, we're both 70+ so we've been around the block with Mexican food, and this is some of the best. We had never stopped to eat here before. Not for any particular reason. We just make a lot of Tex Mex at home. Our waiter was sweet and brought us all three of their salsas to try. We're big green salsa fans. The first table salsa had a fair amount of cumin in it. Not my favorite. The more piquant red was very good, very authentic and the green was muy picante! Delicious! We perused the menu; but ultimately we ordered simply. They have all kinds of wonderful combos; but I just wanted enchiladas. I did ask for salsa verde on the chicken enchilada; but when they came, they were all covered in chili gravy. My husband spotted a lunch special and so we asked if he could have it even though it wasn't lunchtime, and it was okay with a $2 upcharge. Happily, he ordered the tostada/soft taco, beans and rice plate and an additional two crispy beef tacos a la carte. My spouse enjoyed it all. It was just straight up Tex Mex; but good. So were my enchiladas. They were well filled and the meat was seasoned. The chicken was in chunks not shredded which texturally was wonderful. My only real complaint was that I found the music way too loud whether it was Country (and why Country?) or Mexican and they did turn it down when asked. It's also my hope that will get the plumbing fixed in the Ladies Room. To have to place all paper in a trash can that's across the room by the door means moving the trash can back and forth. That's totally unhygienic. There is plenty of parking in this strip center parking lot. read more

My wife and I had a "date" night and we didn't want to have to drive far so we went to El Mexicano. We have eaten here before and it was really good but last night the food and service were awful. I ordered the fajitas and they were ok but they didn't taste like they were cooked fresh at all. The tortillas were hard and it was if the kitchen pre-cooked the fajita meat and only threw it back on the flat top to warm it up. I like to patronize the local restaurants and hate to say anything bad, but it was just not a very good experience at all. The server only came to our table one time and I had to take my check to the counter because he didn't return for me to pay. We may give them another tribe, but I can tell you it was a lot of money for food that was barely edible. read more

The food is so good. We have eaten at all of the locations, Midlothian, tastes better. The Chicken Fajita chimichanga is to die for. Get it with no chili, just topped with queso. OMG! The food was great. This was our first time to the Midlothian location, we usually go to the Waxahachie location by the courthouse. We thought we would try this one out and we are happy we did. My date and I really enjoy the food. I had the Taco Salad, and she had the Chicken Fajitas Salad they were both excellent. Our waitress was very nice and courteous, she checked on us at least 7 times while we were there for 1.5 hours. We were there about 12:30 Friday when there were about 8 policemen there. I've been to the Midlothian location a few times now and it's just as solid as the downtown Waxahachie location. Today is New Year's Eve and all the staff have festive headbands and hats on. The salsa came with some queso today. Not sure if that is a new standard thing or something just for NYE, but it was a nice treat. I've never had their queso and it has just enough spice and real cheese to keep it out of the "cheese sauce" category. I tend to stick with the shrimp quesadilla and cheese enchiladas, but my husband has tried several different things. He loves how the flour tortillas are come out warm and sometimes crisp from the grill (that's the way he likes it when he fixes them at home). Haven't gotten a bad dish yet! Food could be better for the price. We paid $30 for chicken, beef & shrimp fajitas for two people. The fajitas meat was so DRY! The shrimp is salty. The tortillas are store bought & dry. The tortilla chips come straight out of a plastic bag. Nothing authentic about this place. We asked for sour cream and was charged almost $3 for it!!! We had a lot of leftover meat and wanted to take it home to feed to our dogs. Only good thing is that their margaritas are 99 cents on Tuesday. They also had a special on bottled beer, but a lot of their beers were out of stock!!! If you come here, stick to the burritos or enchiladas. read more

Tried this place basically because we didn't want to drive any further than Midlothian. I had heard good thing but man, never expected it to be so good. Guacamole live was a perfect starter. I got combo fajitas. Steak super tender. Both it and the chicken were seasoned perfectly. Plenty of onions and peppers to go with it. Served with the traditional accompaniments. Hubby had the Super Cassandras. It has shrimp, beef chicken mushrooms topped with cheese and served flaming. He loved it. He also loves the charro beans - he could eat a gallon of those alone. Our server Hugo was perfectly attentive. The portions were big enough we don't have to think about lunch (or maybe dinner) tomorrow. It was truly wonderful! read more

Had breakfast here today, was very good. I enjoyed a couple of breakfast tacos, one with bacon the other with sausage. $1.49 each, plus $0.25 to add cheese. Flour tortillas were made in house and were delicious. Large serving of scrambled eggs in each, bacon was chopped small and was crispy - just as I like. The sausage was chucked up patties and were nicely caramelized, although they could have cut up a smidge smaller. Salsas (2) we great as were the chips. They serve a cold chunky nicely flavored salsa and a thin hot (temperature) spicer salsa as well. Also had a iced tea that was good, but I thought a little pricey at $2.99. I saw another table enjoying a special queso dip and asked about it, it is the Queso Compuesto and it features delicious blend of guacamole, queso, pico, and taco meat. Very nicely done, but only one size offered - freaking huge - at $10. I ordered it anyway and left more than 75% of the bowl untouched. Just way too large for anything less than 4 people. But it was good and the value seemed about right for the food received. I'd return again. Interested in trying a few other dishes. Wish they offered French toast. We have eaten here several times, but not recently. We arrived on Thursday night and only a few tables were taken, which was unusual. Service was OK but indifferent. Previously, food had been quite good. This time, everything was pretty horrible. The beans were dry. My wife and her sister ordered nachos which were on old stale chips with some beans and cheese thrown on them in the center. 95% of the chips had nothing on them. Beans were extraordinarily dry as was the rice. Waitress was disinterested and took the nachos off the check without s question. It's a shame. This restaurant has deteriorated so fast. But, it is what it is and we will go elsewhere. read more

Food is good. Like the two fresh salsas, one is served warm which is a nice change. Service is slow. Tip: have a pitcher of iced tea so your staff can be more efficient, taking each glass back to the kitchen never works well. Nice family atmosphere and TV's so you can watch the game. read more

I ask for chips and salsa while I wait and they tell me it cost since I'm taking my food to go. So I spend $50 but gotta pay for chips and salsa.
