I have three words for you : Sour Cream Sauce According to the menu, it's a secret recipe. It's the best I've ever had. I've scoured Mexican restaurants across the state trying to find a sour cream sauce for my enchiladas that tastes as good. It's been an impossible task. Don Joses has set the bar too high. If you're getting any other sauce on your enchiladas, you're wrong. Don Joses has been my favorite Mexican restaurant since I was a kid. For well over two decades I've loved this restaurant. We always went to the one in Corsicana, but it permanently closed after a fire. Thankfully I can still get my fix at this location in Ennis. I'm no longer local so I don't get to eat here as much as I'd like. Anytime I'm in town, I head straight for this restaurant. My only complaint is that they took the Loco Plate off the menu. That was the best daily special you had and though I can create the meal myself a la carte, I wish I didn't have to. I can't recall having an alcoholic beverage there, but my mom loves the painkiller and said it's incredible. The chips and queso are the best I've found. I love the cheese enchiladas with sour cream sauce, and I always add a crispy beef taco to the side. I recommend it to everyone I know when they pass through. Don Joses, I love you and I miss you. We really enjoyed trying Don Jose's in Ennis. We ordered fajitas for two, chicken, beef and shrimp, and it was wonderful! The tortillas were yummy. The salsa was good and our waitress was very attentive and kept our drinks full and salsa cups full as well. lol The hostesses were on their phone the entire time...which is really irritating. Go to work to work...but they sat us and we didn't have to deal with their lack of attention to guests anymore so that was nice. We got our own high chair for little man. The restaurant was clean and had a big patio area. The bathrooms were clean and they DO have a baby changing table. Long-term TexMex fixture in Ennis, with a legit kitchen staff and a lot of stuff in the plus column. Pros: generous portion sizes, daily drink & dinner specials, full(ish) bar, really good food, and quick seating at most times. Cons: slow drink service, and some dishes may miss the mark (depends on staffing). Details: (1) our Queso and Chips were good, but chip refills were slow, (2) even though business was slow - drinks took forever, but my Grande Margarita was good, (3) my Tacos al Carbon were easily the largest I've ever seen at ANY restaurant, and they were GOOD!, (4) our Chicken Flautas were overcooked - burnt black on the ends, and (5) the 1/2 order of Chicken Fajita Nachos was not only a huge portion, they were VERY good! Service was terrible. Waited over a half hour to be seated not including the ten minutes we waited for a hostess to come out. And when she did, she came out of the restroom with three of the servers giggling and gossiping. Our waitress walked past us a handful of times before stopping and greeting us and taking our drink order. We waited over 15 minutes for our drinks, when my gf went to the bathroom she saw her standing at the bar talking to other staff. First time here. Hostess greeted us, asked how many, then proceeded to escort us to the outdoor patio. Never offered an option to sit indoors or outdoors. Menus were not clean. Server Erik was welcoming. We both ordered the taco and enchilada plate with rice and beans. Took nearly 20 minutes for our food. Too long for an empty restaurant. We had to ask our server to check on our order. He told us "they'll bring it out." The taco, enchilada, and rice were flavorful. The beans tasted like they were from a can... not good at all. This was our first time going to Don Jose's since they re-open a couple of weeks ago. We arrived in the afternoon, and was told there was a fifteen minute wait. Cool, no big deal. So while we waited, we noticed that nobody was leaving the restaurant. When they called our name to be seated, we got up and started heading to our table. While walking to the table we noticed a bunch of empty tables and booths all over the restaurant. So why we had to wait fifteen minutes? No idea. Got to our table, and it wasn't clean. There was leftover food from the last customers, water everywhere, and a couple of dead flies. After we cleaned our own table, we looked at the menu and waited on our waitress. Waitress got there pretty shortly and she was nice. Took our drinks and asked if we wanted queso. When she came back with our queso and drinks, we put our order in and we're off to the races. We ordered fajitas for two, for three of us to share. We also ordered some tortilla soup. Our waitress never asked what type of tortillas we wanted. She also never asked what type of beans we wanted. Our food was brought out from a different waiter and this was after he almost gave our food to another table. He handed us our fajitas, and soup but there was no tortillas or garnish. While waiting on our food, one of us realized they need a spoon so she can eat her soup. About three to four minutes later, the waiter comes back with tortillas and garnish. And you would have thought this man was running a marathon. He threw the garnish and tortillas right on the table and left before we could get any words out of our mouths. He eventually walked passed our table and one of us tried talking to him, to tell him we needed a spoon. He put his finger to one of our faces and said "I'm not your waiter, let me go find your waitress." Then walks away. We just needed a spoon... He comes back and says he can't find our waitress. We told him we just needed a spoon for the soup. He quickly leave and comes back with silverware wrapped in a napkin. He brought us another fork.... Finally, our waitress comes back and one of us asks for a spoon and some lime for the soup. Our waitress brought out the spoon (finally) and some lemon. We had to ask AGAIN for lime, and it was finally brought to us. Our waitress never asked if we wanted drink refills, never asked to refill our chips, and never came to check on us until it was time to give us the ticket. We ate our food, paid and got out of there. Overall, the food was solid. Nothing amazing, but wasn't bad. Wasn't worth the price and side fees though. However, that was some of the worst customer service we have ever experienced going out to eat. Would not recommend going to Don Jose's until the customer service is better. read more

We were a party of 7 and frankly the food was very average and kind of expensive but the worst was the service. Quoted 15 minutes for our table and we waited 35. Ok not that big of a deal. But our server was terrible. Instead of "serving" us she stood at the head of the table and asked us to pass down everything instead of walking to where we sat and placing things. We found that really weird- there was nothing blocking her path- was it just laziness? Perhaps because she had a built in tip due to us being a party of 7 she just didn't care? We had to ask for more chips, salsa, drinks. Our food took 50 minutes from order to table and it was very mediocre. We won't go back. There are better places in Ennis. read more

Went to eat here tonight for the first time and it was very delicious. The queso was not like other places, it was the best queso I've ever had. We had margaritas and birria quesadillas. My friend is gluten free and they were are able to make her birria quesadilla with corn tortilla and she was so grateful that they customized her order to her dietary restrictions! Our sever was the nicest guy and we had a nice conversation with him, I think his name was Erick. We will definitely come back to eat here when we come back through Ennis! I've eaten here for 20+ years and always loved the food, however something has definitely changed since the remodel. My wife and I waited at our table for over 20 minutes without so much as a "hello, we'll be right with you". No drink order, chips and salsa, nothing. Multiple waiters walked by our table and never acknowledged us. We grew tired of being ignored and decided to leave. I spoke with the manager on our way out and all he could offer was, "were short handed". I messaged the Facebook page and received a generic apology. I live in Corsicana and miss ours here, and did not even know there was one in Ennis until my son in law Stanley Phillips took me with the grandson about two weeks ago. I loved the whole experience. The restaurant is spacious and very clean, the staff were very attentive. The waitress recommended the birria soup and it was amazing. I love soups, but rarely order them in restaurants as they tend to be over salted. Not in this case, you could taste every flavor and was delicious. My husband and I met family at Don Jose's yesterday for lunch. We have never had a bad experience there especially since the remodel. Service was great, food was correct, hot and delicious. Our waitress Patricia S. was top-notch, she was nice and kept checking on us for more salsa, chips,and tea. Even the manager J.R. came out to talk and check in on us while we were there. I was really hoping for the experience to be better than it was two years ago. But honestly the ordering process and seeing multiple people taking our order caused massive confusion. Although the food was good, the wait was long and the chimichanga that I got had no vegetables just a plate of brown food refried beans, Mexican rice and a small overstaffed fried burrito? Where is the guacamole, the fresh tomatoes, cilantro, the lettuce?? It says if they completely forgot to put it on the plate. They really need to work on portions, normally at Mexican restaurants the portions are large it's what you expect and there's always a fresh component. Although the building is very pretty there's still a lot of work to be done on the service and the food. I plan on eating here again with my family but I will ask for a side salad to fix the lack of fresh ingredients on otherwise brown plate of food read more

This was a first time visit. We got there a little after 9 last night. We went to the bar area and got completely ignored by two bartenders. If looks could kill, we would be dead. I'm not sure what the dirty looks were for. I asked a waitress if we could get help with ordering drinks and food. I explained everything that happened, and she immediately took our drink order. I believe I spoke with a manager and he was quick to help us find us a table in the main area. I also believe another manager was involved. They were both super nice. The waitress ,Liz, was more than happy to wait on us at the small table next to the bar. She took care of us and was super nice. All of the staff, except for the two lady bartenders last night, were super nice. I was frustrated at first, but Liz made our dining experience so much better! Thank you Liz for saving the night! Went here for lunch on Sunday. Waiter took our order which included a small queso. Never got the queso but thought okay, will just make sure it's not on the final bill. Waiter never checked on us although he had tables all around us. When the table next to us got their food (came in 5-10 min after us) we got a little concerned. After another 15 minutes of nothing my husband inquired and received a response of "I'm not sure where your food is."When we were walking out, the manager said, your food is coming out right now. This unassuming Mexican Food place is probably the best in Ennis. I have been a couple of times and the service is always fast and friendly. I have had the quesadillas with steak and the tacos al carbon which are served sizzling fajita style. One request would be to have better refried beans. Not "authentic Mexican" Rice is dry and either lacks a bit of flavor or too salty. The charro beans taste like ranch style beans with a few peppers thrown in. Some entrees aren't bad but I am usually discouraged from getting an entree because I don't like the rice. Whenever I've ordered a meal that says it comes with a different kind of rice they still serve "Mexican" rice. I've ordered coffee before but the last time I got the coffee it tasted like ass. Disappointing because true Mexicans know coffee can be served at any time and should at least taste like coffee not ass. read more
