El Maguey is a mainstay in Wildwood for good Mexican fare at a good price. The staff is always there to please and the atmosphere is great for families or first dates. Great bar with bar seating and nice tables and a wonderful outside patio. The dining area accommodates most parties comfort on to 8. The food is good. Good quality ingredients and safe for standard Mexican fare. The seafood entrees are a little bland. Our favorites - all of the fajitas, tamales and queso fandidto. . To be fair we don't try everything on the menu and probably should. They have an extensive selection of delicious entrees and salads. I would put this on your list as a regular Mexican places to visit, especially with families. read more

This location has the frozen margaritas! I loved these. The strawberry-and-mango combination, with the strawberry syrup poured over, was worth the trip. The alcohol's taste was nicely balanced, and the fruit flavors were sweet. I ordered the Enchiladas Yolandas. The shredded chicken was tender and flavored nicely. The beef taco ordered on the side was a bit bland and needed some extra sauce added to it. Service was quick and the staff was friendly and accommodating. The portion size of their fajitas is noticeably smaller than other el maguey locations. Also, the quality of the cooked vegetables was terrible. Most of them looked as if they were scraped off the bottom of the skillet. not to mention the skillet did not sizzle like any other place when fajitas are brought out. I haven't eaten here but I have ordered to go several times. Each time I've been in to place an order online or in person the staff have been great! They are always friendly and positive and welcoming. I have also enjoyed everything I've ordered. I'll begin with the quest which is a staple in any Tex Mex restaurant and there's is spot on and sometimes has a rather delightful kick you won't see coming. I've had the chimi with the beef tips...and let me tell you how delicious the beef tips are, tender and seasoned well and rather addictive! Went there for a late lunch. Esperanza was our waitress and was very helpful. While El Maguey is typical "Tex mex", it was a good meal. The portions are huge (we ordered off the regular menu vs the lunch menu). We ordered for the two of us, but the amount could easily have fed 4, so either go with a big appetite or prepare to take food home which we did. I had the Birria tacos and they were good. The dipping sauce is extra for the tacos, but comes with the quesadilla version. Hubby had shrimp and steak fajitas and he really enjoyed them. We split a top shelf margarita, and it was by far the best part of the meal. We sat on the outside patio under umbrellas for shade and enjoyed the afternoon. Haven't been here in a while. We came in because we received a gift certificate for Christmas. There was a twenty minute wait so not too bad. El Maguey is your traditional Tex Mex restaurant. The food is not great but the service is friendly. We ordered the shrimp fajitas to split between two and it was just the right size. The food was just okay. We he beat part was the dessert which we devoured so I didn't take any pics. We ordered the cheesecake chili which is like ice cream with a tortillas on top of it and ice cream and also the sopapillas with ice cream. They were so yummy! read more

Should've known this place wasn't good. We were the only patrons inside and it was our first sign. The lone employee we saw was a jack of all trades. Took our order, served our food, and took our payment! The tomatillo sauce was so hot it was inedible. The carnitas were just ok. The beans were flavorless and the rice was dry and hard. Her poblano pepper was terrible!!!! Taco was ok, served with ground beef. The margaritas were small and did not detect any flavor of tequila. Very weak. Food is good, but they really like to play with the portion sizes. Sometimes, their tacos are only halfway full or you'll order nachos with meat and there's barely any meat. I've never complained because I tell myself it's because they are busy and rushing to fulfill many orders, but last time I went, I paid for extra carne asada (steak slices) and was told "you bought carne asada, not ground beef" and "the extra steak is stuck to the other piece of steak." The first response makes no sense (I never said anything about ground beef) and the second response is a bit ridiculous (if the steak is stuck to the other piece of steak then it is one piece lol). There's two slices of steak in a regular order and usually three slices when I pay for extra. Overall, good food, but they try to skimp you and will stand on it. read more

I like the outdoor seating area and they have room to expand with a little more improvements. This could be a great heated outdoor seating area for Fall/Winter. It's not the food. It's the service. We were in the area for an annual event. El Maguey is close to our hotel, so we went over for dinner one night. My friend ordered the seafood soup and I had a carnitas burrito. Food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. We're from California, jet-lagged and very tired, so we wanted to get out of there. Our server eventually dropped off the check, then disappeared. Turned out she was too busy visiting with another table, so I took the check to a manager and paid the bill so that we could leave. The following evening we were very tired, but -- what the heck -- the food at El Maguey was pretty good, so we went back. My friend ordered the mocajete, I ordered a different burrito. Unfortunately, the food in the mocajete was cold. Not just not hot -- cold-- and things went downhill from there. The server didn't want to hear it and interrupted ("it's not my fault, I didn't make it."). So we asked for a manager (who then proceeded to tell us that "other people" complained because we were complaining loudly) and also wouldn't listen, interrupted and was almost as defensive as the server. But she at least tried to make things right. At this point, my friend left the restaurant without eating because she was upset and didn't want to stay. Finally Kelly (who I believe is a manager) came over and I explained what my friend reacted to. It was an unnecessarily bad experience, aggravated by staff that preferred to argue and interrupt instead of diffusing the situation. Clearly a training opportunity. Please don't tell me how hot the bowl was. The food inside was cold. Please don't try to defend the server by telling me that she's one of their top employees and great with customers. It was a textbook case of bad customer service. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's how you recover that counts. In this case, the staff took a defensive posture instead of practicing a bit of empathy. My friend had been up since 5 AM, hadn't eaten all day, but handled my dog to a major win at Purina Farms. What should have been a fun evening was probably one of my worst restaurant experiences ever. Needless to say, I don't care if the food there can be good. While this isn't the most amazing Mexican food I've ever had, it is better than many other places in West County. It's typically pretty crowded and often has a wait during peak times. I'm back in St. Louis and my family suggested this place for dinner. I'm always down for Mexican, so I was alright with it. Right when we arrived it looked like a little hole in the wall. Once we stepped inside it was a little on the small side. Our table of five was seated immediately which was a plus. Right when we got to our booth the seats were covered in food so we had to wipe that down as we all sat down. Then as we sat down, a fly or something was on the window next to us and wouldn't go away. Our waitress came and took our drink order very quickly, which was also a plus. Now, I ordered the shrimp cocktail for dinner, not knowing it had jalapeños in it. It was so spicy, but tasted oh so good. They brought me out like three packets of crackers, so I had to ask for more since you get this HUGE cup to eat from. The waiter was so attentive and was running back and forth with our request for more guacamole, salsa, spicy salsa and warm chips. The portions for these are tiny and delicious, so it's no surprise that we wanted seconds and thirds! The chips is a huge portion though. The food came out promptly. The spinach enchiladas with extra veg was lip smacking good. The veggie fajitas were the best I have ever had! The side of grilled jalapeños really hit the spot! DH had a shrimp special dish which was grilled shrimp on a bed of lettuce and rice. He got a side order of tortilla and cleaned his plate.
