They are a chain of Mexican restaurants that will satisfy the craving and provide a festive atmosphere. The complimentary chips and salsa are top notch, and they do not hesitate to refill your bowls. Caldo de Pollo con Verdura $15 (large) - You get a lot of soup that's filled with chicken and vegetable. The broth is tasty and not too salty. It was served barely warm and tasted better reheated as leftover. El Maguey is a mainstay in Wildwood for good Mexican fare at a good price. The staff is always there to please and the atmosphere is great for families or first dates. Great bar with bar seating and nice tables and a wonderful outside patio. The dining area accommodates most parties comfort on to 8. The food is good. Good quality ingredients and safe for standard Mexican fare. The seafood entrees are a little bland. Our favorites - all of the fajitas, tamales and queso fandidto. . To be fair we don't try everything on the menu and probably should. They have an extensive selection of delicious entrees and salads. I would put this on your list as a regular Mexican places to visit, especially with families. read more

This location has the frozen margaritas! I loved these. The strawberry-and-mango combination, with the strawberry syrup poured over, was worth the trip. The alcohol's taste was nicely balanced, and the fruit flavors were sweet. I ordered the Enchiladas Yolandas. The shredded chicken was tender and flavored nicely. The beef taco ordered on the side was a bit bland and needed some extra sauce added to it. Service was quick and the staff was friendly and accommodating. This wasn't my favorite location I have visited, other locations lean more authentic rather than Tex-Mex. read more

I came here for the soft serve margaritas because this was the first place to have them and I haven't seen another in the area that looks as good as they do here and I'm glad I made the drive because they were delicious! I also think you get a ton and it made it hard to finish it which is a good thing because you definitely get your money's worth and can actually taste the tequila. Our sever was very attentive and food was delicious. I would recommend you bring cash though because then your check is a little cheaper! read more

A decade of coming here as a family, but not longer. I know the restaurant business is tough but their prices are pretty outrageous for the faux Tex-Mex that passes for Mexican food in West County. When burritos are $20 and street tacos $17 you'd expect something more than when they were 2/3 the price several years ago. Decent, friendly ambiance and good salsa, but its no longer worth the price read more

I haven't eaten here but I have ordered to go several times. Each time I've been in to place an order online or in person the staff have been great! They are always friendly and positive and welcoming. I have also enjoyed everything I've ordered. I'll begin with the quest which is a staple in any Tex Mex restaurant and there's is spot on and sometimes has a rather delightful kick you won't see coming. I've had the chimi with the beef tips...and let me tell you how delicious the beef tips are, tender and seasoned well and rather addictive! I've enjoyed each time I've been here and look forward to actually sitting in and having a drink one of these days! read more

Haven't been here in a while. We came in because we received a gift certificate for Christmas. There was a twenty minute wait so not too bad. El Maguey is your traditional Tex Mex restaurant. The food is not great but the service is friendly. We ordered the shrimp fajitas to split between two and it was just the right size. The food was just okay. We he beat part was the dessert which we devoured so I didn't take any pics. We ordered the cheesecake chili which is like ice cream with a tortillas on top of it and ice cream and also the sopapillas with ice cream. They were so yummy! read more

Went there for a late lunch. Esperanza was our waitress and was very helpful. While El Maguey is typical "Tex mex", it was a good meal. The portions are huge (we ordered off the regular menu vs the lunch menu). We ordered for the two of us, but the amount could easily have fed 4, so either go with a big appetite or prepare to take food home which we did. I had the Birria tacos and they were good. The dipping sauce is extra for the tacos, but comes with the quesadilla version. Hubby had shrimp and steak fajitas and he really enjoyed them. We split a top shelf margarita, and it was by far the best part of the meal. We sat on the outside patio under umbrellas for shade and enjoyed the afternoon. All in all it was a pleasant experience . read more

Lovely patio and the servers are really awesome! And, can I say you need to try the soft serve margs

El Maguey is just a staple. Their Birria Tacos were incredible - loved them last time I came in. Also great guac

The portion size of their fajitas is noticeably smaller than other el maguey locations. Also, the quality of the cooked vegetables was terrible. Most of them looked as if they were scraped off the bottom of the skillet. not to mention the skillet did not sizzle like any other place when fajitas are brought out. On the plus size they have the soft serve margs. You just have to ask.... Personally I am not likely to return to this location. read more

We've been going here for years but tonight was exceptional. The quesadilla fajitas was the perfect combo of veggies, cheese, beans and chicken. The chicken was tender and seasoned perfectly. My husband had the birria plate and he loved it. The margaritas are the best and they make me happy. The atmosphere is fun and the service is friendly and fast! read more

----------- ----------- Current Review, Aug., 2023 ----------- We visited on a very nice evening outside and requested a patio table. As the hostess led us from the inside to the outside, we found some neighbors, and they moved to sit with us... a pleasant surprise! We enjoyed steak fajitas and I enjoyed four street tacos... wonderful as usual! We also enjoyed the margaritas and ou daughter enjoyed an alcohol-free strawberry margarita. The El Maguey patio is welcoming and relaxing; more so when enjoying the evening with friends. We'll be back! ----------- ----------- Previous Review, Aug., 2021 ----------- Concise Review - Good patio, atmosphere - Friendly Staff - Phenomenal dinner - Shrimp Yucateco & Especial De La Casa - Awesome date night with my wonderful wife My wonderful wife and I were able to enjoy another date night. On this hot summer day, the evening cooled so the patio was the place to sit, and to enjoy the sunset with pinkish-orangish clouds in the blue sky. We enjoyed the chips and dip, and two of the Friday night special margaritas - all good. While it's easy to order the always good fajitas, we have tried menu items the last visit (noted below) and this visit, and have been blessed both times. This visit we really enjoyed sharing: - Shrimp Yucateco... shrimp with thin-sliced squash, onions, mushrooms, and a tomato sauce... with beans and rice and salsa and guacamole on the side - Especial De La Casa - beef, chicken, shrimp.... annnnd bacon. While we have never had bacon on any Mexican dish, and while bacon dues truly make everything better... this was not just some "gimmick..." this is a great dish... good on its own and made better with the cheese sauce - I think it was quest.. wow so good. Thank you, Chef! Our server, Maria, was attentive and friendly. Thanks! Thank you for helping make a great date night with my wonderful wife Thank you, El Maguey! ----------- ----------- Original Review, 2021-06 / June, 2021 Longer Review My wife surprised me by planning a date night for dinner... she was in the mood for Mexican and picked El Maguey... good call! We were able to be seated at a patio seat on a wonderful night to be outside. Our waitress brought chips and salsa before we ordered. We've to El Maguey before and have always had great dinners... tonight was a little extra special. - Friendly staff - Good shared margarita - The sides plates - tortillas, beans and rice, shredded lettuce, sour cream and guacamole... good as always - Entrees that were ABSOLUTEY PHENOMENAL... Steak El Dorado and Chicken Huasteco / Pollo Huasteco... we shared, switching plates mid-meal... so good - Steak El Dorado has cheese, an awesome sauce, onions, etc. melts in your mouth - We tried Chicken Huasteco / Pollo Huasteco for the first time... a fantastic sauce over the chicken and onions and peppers - Tie for best flavor... both are so good that we are unable to pick the steak over the chicken or the chicken over the steak... TIE goes to the entrees... the WIN goes to our taste buds! Our server, Emily, was attentive and friendly. Thanks! Thank you for helping make a great date night with my wonderful wife Thank you, El Maguey! ----------- ----------- ----------- read more

Should've known this place wasn't good. We were the only patrons inside and it was our first sign. The lone employee we saw was a jack of all trades. Took our order, served our food, and took our payment! The tomatillo sauce was so hot it was inedible. The carnitas were just ok. The beans were flavorless and the rice was dry and hard. Her poblano pepper was terrible!!!! Taco was ok, served with ground beef. The margaritas were small and did not detect any flavor of tequila. Very weak. No wonder this chain sits idle!!!!!!!!!!!!! read more

We have exGperienced many, many new recent Mexican restaurants this past year. None of which have impressed us like El Maguey (in Wildwood). We have dined here for the last 10 years off and on and it always has great food and wonderful service. Prices are not outrageous like some of the new ones that have opened (San Jose, Carrettas, Mi Lupita). El Maguey will make your food as spicy as you like, upon request; and we like very spicy! Always flavorful. Go to the Wildwood El Maguey and great food and service. read more

Favorite restaurant in Wildwood!! Always has great service and delicious food. Fun atmosphere too!

El Maguey is my go to Mexican restaurant when I crave their food. The manager Francisco keeps things running well. I like the outdoor seating area and they have room to expand with a little more improvements. This could be a great heated outdoor seating area for Fall/Winter. Burrito Supreme was delicious and the Corona was chilled to a nice cold temperature. Will be back. read more

Food is good, but they really like to play with the portion sizes. Sometimes, their tacos are only halfway full or you'll order nachos with meat and there's barely any meat. I've never complained because I tell myself it's because they are busy and rushing to fulfill many orders, but last time I went, I paid for extra carne asada (steak slices) and was told "you bought carne asada, not ground beef" and "the extra steak is stuck to the other piece of steak." The first response makes no sense (I never said anything about ground beef) and the second response is a bit ridiculous (if the steak is stuck to the other piece of steak then it is one piece lol). There's two slices of steak in a regular order and usually three slices when I pay for extra. Overall, good food, but they try to skimp you and will stand on it. read more

The service is pretty good whenever I go here. The environment is festive and what you would expect with a Mexican restaurant. The food is okay, but definitely not the best Mexican food. It's not the food. It's the service. We were in the area for an annual event. El Maguey is close to our hotel, so we went over for dinner one night. My friend ordered the seafood soup and I had a carnitas burrito. Food was pretty good and the prices were reasonable. We're from California, jet-lagged and very tired, so we wanted to get out of there. Our server eventually dropped off the check, then disappeared. Turned out she was too busy visiting with another table, so I took the check to a manager and paid the bill so that we could leave. The following evening we were very tired, but -- what the heck -- the food at El Maguey was pretty good, so we went back. My friend ordered the mocajete, I ordered a different burrito. Unfortunately, the food in the mocajete was cold. Not just not hot -- cold-- and things went downhill from there. The server didn't want to hear it and interrupted ("it's not my fault, I didn't make it."). So we asked for a manager (who then proceeded to tell us that "other people" complained because we were complaining loudly) and also wouldn't listen, interrupted and was almost as defensive as the server. But she at least tried to make things right. At this point, my friend left the restaurant without eating because she was upset and didn't want to stay. Finally Kelly (who I believe is a manager) came over and I explained what my friend reacted to. It was an unnecessarily bad experience, aggravated by staff that preferred to argue and interrupt instead of diffusing the situation. Clearly a training opportunity. Please don't tell me how hot the bowl was. The food inside was cold. Please don't try to defend the server by telling me that she's one of their top employees and great with customers. It was a textbook case of bad customer service. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's how you recover that counts. In this case, the staff took a defensive posture instead of practicing a bit of empathy. My friend had been up since 5 AM, hadn't eaten all day, but handled my dog to a major win at Purina Farms. What should have been a fun evening was probably one of my worst restaurant experiences ever. Needless to say, I don't care if the food there can be good. The service suffers from a lack of training. read more

3.5 stars El Maguey is a local chain and this location is consistent in its service and taste. While this isn't the most amazing Mexican food I've ever had, it is better than many other places in West County. It's typically pretty crowded and often has a wait during peak times. There's nothing upscale or innovative happening here, but it's the right place if you're craving standard Tex Mex comfort food or maybe just a margarita. read more

The food was outstanding also the staff was very good . Also the wait wasn't bad and they have out door seating .

I'm back in St. Louis and my family suggested this place for dinner. I'm always down for Mexican, so I was alright with it. Right when we arrived it looked like a little hole in the wall. Once we stepped inside it was a little on the small side. Our table of five was seated immediately which was a plus. Right when we got to our booth the seats were covered in food so we had to wipe that down as we all sat down. Then as we sat down, a fly or something was on the window next to us and wouldn't go away. Our waitress came and took our drink order very quickly, which was also a plus. Now, I ordered the shrimp cocktail for dinner, not knowing it had jalapeños in it. It was so spicy, but tasted oh so good. They brought me out like three packets of crackers, so I had to ask for more since you get this HUGE cup to eat from. I would eat here again since the food didn't disappoint, but I just wish they would clean the tables better after people left. I don't think anyone would appreciate sitting on ground beef. read more
