Food is good, the salsa is a glorified tomato sauce. Chips were light and crispy. The margarita was watery, and tasted like a really cheap powder mix or something, not that great. Service was ok. First, please note this is my neighborhood's Mexixcan restaurant, so we go here multiple times a month. They have relocated to a larger building with covered, outdoor seating. It has ample parking. The interior is adorable and very clean. All the wait staff greets you warmly and seats you promptly. Chips and their delicious salsa come out in minutes along with water. Drink orders are taken, and when the drinks arrive your food order is taken. Chips and salsa are refreshed as needed. The food arrives piping hot and everything we have had is delicious. My husband's favorite is the mixed fajitas and I love their chili rellanos. I have tried multiple dishes (the lunch chimichanga is so good!) and everyone of them are unique and delicious. Drinks are refreshed often. We often have to ask for the bill. We learned in Mexico that presenting the bill is considered rude, as if they were rushing us out. Since we are used to doing this, we ask for the bill when we are about halfway finished. We've never waited more than 5 minutes to get our ticket. We love going here with friends as well. I patronized their new building on a Friday night. I like the new vibe. We wanted to sit and enjoy a margarita before eating. We had to ask a few times to wait at least 10 minutes to take our order. We all know once you order the food is out so fast. When this happens one cannot enjoy their cocktail. Also, we ordered a jalapeno marg and all they did was throw a ton of chopped jalapenos in the glass. I was hoping for an infused tequilla or a spicy rim. They do have great service and the food is always good. I only wish they did not bring out your food so fast. I would spend more money if I was able to enjoy the visit a little longer than a quick 30 minute turn around. read more

WORST. DINING EXPERIENCE. EVER!!! My family mistakenly chose this restaurant for a special diner last night. I ordered a taco salad with black beans. What I received was a tortilla shell with gray liquid beans. Needless to say it was inedible. The manager came and asked what he could do. I ordered the veggie fajitas instead. I was once again brought a bowl of gray bean soup. When I asked about it I the waitress pointed to it and said "fajita". I the manager came over again and I told him I was not going to eat it, did not want anything else, and asked him to take it off of our bill. My mother also ordered a taco salad and also received a sub par inedible bowl of mush. When the rest of my family received their food it was also terrible. The guacamole was obviously off. It tasted like it had been sitting out for days. The meat in their meals also tasted off. They were unable to eat it. When my brother asked for the meals to be taken off of the bill we were brought take out boxes instead. Which we obviously did not use. When attempting to explain to the manager that we should not have to pay for food that was inedible, he accused us of insulting his food. He was unwilling to compromise at all. He took off my salad and demanded that my brother pay the entire bill despite no one being able to eat. If that was not enough, he went outside and photographed my vehicle and license plate. My brother was forced to pay under duress and the threat of calling the police. When confronted about the photo and telling the manager that I needed him to delete it while I watched, he said he already did and once again threatened us with calling the police. The bill had been paid in full!!! If that was not enough to qualify as a terrible experience, my entire family became sick later last night from the few bites they had taken. There is no way to contact an owner as the "specific individual ownership details for the El Agave location in St. Charles (Elm St) are privately held and not publicly detailed by name in state registries or local filings". How convenient! I also found this in my search for avenues of recourse: "Specific health department inspection scores and ratings for El Agave are not published directly in a static summary online". This manager took no responsibility for any of his actions or the quality of his food. When my mother called last night to let them know that she was sick, after they said hello and she started speaking, they did not say another word. I know this is long winded, but I believe people need to know of the unethical business practices going on there. I have reported them to the health department. It is NO coincidence when 5/6 people get sick after eating at a restaurant. I was the only one not to get sick and all I ate was chips. It is impossible to use their star rating as zero stars is not an option. read more

We have all been there before and expected it to be very good. we were very much wrong. food wasn't the best it was quite flavorless, taco bell would've been better. The food flavor from all 5 of us agreed it was bad. 2 of us ordered refried beans which we always love and enjoy. His came out thick, clumpy and lumpy. Mine was like watered soup. Both were bland and tasteless and we couldn't eat them. The ladies ate part of their meal but didn't like the taste either. The boy got French fries that were bad taste like old oil. Wow! Great food and atmosphere! Building is immaculate! Food and service was spectacular! Can't wait for our next visit!

I cannot understand why the rating is so low here. We have been coming for years and the food and service are always fantastic.

Bigger is not always better. Overall really disappointed after the on again and off again move to the new location.. The service - it was so much better at the previous location. A lot less friendly attitudes all around and a lot more rushed servers just trying to move on to the next order. The ambiance - there's no sound proofing whatsoever so if you are planning on doing a lot of socializing, be prepared to talk loudly. It feels more like a sports bar now and gets overwhelmingly loud when busy. The food - you put up with bad service/ambiance if the food is outstanding. The Tacos al pastor and any of the enchiladas are still pretty good but nothing is so far and above other Mexican joints that it's worth the other shortcomings. And truth be told, even the food seems to be lacking. I'm assuming corners are being cut to keep up with the higher demand. I'll try again after they've had more time to grow into the new location but I fear they may have bitten off more than they can chew with the size of the place. Here's hoping I'm wrong. read more

They have a rich menu. Some of my favorites are imported Mexican beers (taste much better), wine, margarona, fajita and tortilla soup! I love the soup; chicken is so tender and it has rice and milk, so delicious. Great option for cold winter days! Service was perfect, out waiter was very friendly. My wife always orders the poblano peppers, but they don't parboil the peppers, so they are always tough. But tasty overall. I wouldn't say this is the best Mexican in town but the employees are wonderful. We have an annual dinner here every month and always have great service. I typically get the veggie fajitas, you get a lot of food for the price. We also enjoy getting our tower margaritas from here as well! Food came quick and I ordered a fajita salad in a fried shell. There was a good amount of liquid in the bottom. Made the shell soggy. El Agave is one of the better Mexican restaurants that I've eaten at, period. They have a ton of unique options and all of the staples that you expect. They have top notch margs they are always consistent and the right level of strong. I typically go with the Gonzales Burrito but their al pastor street tacos are wonderful as well. The only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is I've had a few issues with take-out and confusing the orders. But overall the food is wonderful and the staff is great! read more

I had to order more food from another place when i got home and saw how small the portions were for the 2 person fajitas mix. We got 2 double fajitas mixes. They tried to only give us 6 tortillas, and one chips and salsa. The amount of fajita mix looked like less than the old single amount. Had never been there before. First time ordering. Saw the restaurant across from Walgreens. Wanted to give it a try. Ordered online. Went to a building that read "El Agave". No one there and door locked. Called the number and asked why the door was locked. Angry guy on phone said "look to your right". Saw the current location in a strip center. Didn't realize the new location was not finished. Got inside the current location. Guy on the phone has a condescending and berating attitude and says "use your GPS for the address". I told him I didn't use GPS. He said who are you delivering with? I told him I placed the order myself and was picking up the food myself and this was the first time I had ever been there. Suggestion - how about putting a "Coming Soon! Please go to our current location next door" banner outside so that someone who has never been to your restaurant knows that the location is not yet open. Decent food. Crappy attitude. Don't know if I want to order from there again and deal with the snide attitude. read more

I have tried this Mexican restaurant three times and haven't been impressed. Their queso dip is as thin as water. Their chicken filling for chimichangas and burritos lacks flavor and is too dry. Their kids chicken nugget meal consists of very bready nuggets with pulverized chicken and bland (usually cold) French fries. The service is always good. read more

Was hoping to try a Mexican restaurant that served fresh, AUTHENTIC food. Had high hopes but the food here was horrible! The only redeeming value was the mango marguerite! After reading through an exhausting menu, which I believe had over 100 selections, I finally decided to get the combination beef burrito, chicken enchilada, and chicken taco. When my meal arrived, the taco was not good at all! The queso cheese was bland and watery! I ordered a side of fresh guacamole and when it was brought to me, it was a very dark green concoction and had a funny taste. I make fresh guacamole at home and I have had it many times before at other restaurants and that was not fresh guacamole! The salsa that was served with the chips resembled tomato sauce, no delicious chunkiness whatsoever. The chips were thick, commercial bag brand not the appealing, restaurant style, thin, white corn, semi salty hot chips that make you want to eat til you can't get enough of it. A TRUELY authentic style mexican restaurant should not have a menu that takes you 30 mins just to read through to select what you want to eat. Specialize in certain dishes and perfect those dishes; make FRESH guacamole and FRESH salsa with delicious chips to serve your clients and your restaurant will keep customers lining up outside the doors!
