This restaurant is located in a plaza with several other businesses and they share a parking lot. As you enter the restaurant, you see the bright colors. The restaurant was very clean. Summary: Expansive menu of Mexican favorites and a friendly staff in comfortable surroundings. For no reason it's been over three years since we visited nearby El Azteca. We tried to visit a month ago but the place was packed at dinner and we didn't want to wait. If you do wait I don't think you'll be disappointed. (The many 5-star Yelp! reviews will back me up.) El Azteca has a large menu--even of lunch specials--with fair pricing. Food is satisfactory. And service was helpful and friendly. Our server patiently explained a birthday coupon we had, what was or wasn't included, and options for their Taco Tuesday specials. In the end we ordered two lunch combos and were delighted with the results. My chicken taco could have used more seasoning and the Spanish rice was a bit dry. Wow this place was a total surprise and one that's worth checking out. Because El Azteca is AAdvantage dining and because Timber Creek Grill no longer is participating, Ms T and I went for a quick lunch on the day before Christmas (The Mi Lupita staff was getting a much deserved day off). I thought I may as well check it out. I was expecting one of the predictable cookie-cutter Mexican places and that is what we found at El Azteca. It was OK, very predictable food. I always start at a new place with huevos con chorizo if they have them on the menu and I ask for them even if they are not listed. Here I asked for chiles torreados and the server wanted to know if I wanted them mixed in with the eggs and I said, "yes". I liked that he understood what I was after. I have been in places that did not understand the concept of chiles with eggs. In this case I received a decent plate of eggs with chorizo that had a little heat and very good grilled chiles were incorporated. It was a good start. I found the beans to be a little grainy and I suspect they are canned. They are slightly red colored with red chile and also had a little heat. Ms T just wanted a taco salad. She liked the ground beef which was seasoned and decently salted. She did not like the grainy refried bean texture and would order without beans next time. Otherwise the salad was also fine. The chips came out freshly fried, but I found them bitter. I'm sure their frying oil was past it's prime. That's OK, I have almost quit eating chips and salsa anyway. I just don't need them anymore. The salsa is pretty mundane, over onioned which with the too-old cooking oil made it easy to not fill up on chips. Because of its reasonable proximity to home and the AAdvantage program participation, I can see returning for lunch once in a while. I will try the Carnitas (red or green) and Chile Colorado. While not truly outstanding it is acceptable standard Mexican fare presented be very nice servers. Addition - a few weeks later we came back. This time I did get the red sauced carnitas. The serving is huge and comes in a very hot molcajete. I seriously think this is enough for four people. I'm sure the pork is not cooked in this sauce, because the flavors are not infused in the meat, but the sauce is very good and it was hard to stop short of killing myself on this. read more

When I looked in the door, El Azteca seemed very small. Turn a few times and it's an average-sized restaurant. I ordered 2 cheese enchiladas and 1 cheese burrito. The burrito was delicious; the enchiladas were decent. My companion ordered tacos al pastor that weren't shredded as she was expecting. Instead, they were cut up and consequently not as tender/juicy as she had hoped. The server was nice. The peach margarita was delicious! However, my water was not refilled. I personally have a slight obsession with Mexican food. Right now I'm currently on tour trying out different places in the St. Louis area. El Azteca is pretty close to my house which makes it very convenient for me. The place itself from the outside looks pretty small. I thought it was going to be a small shack Mexican place with not much room inside. It's actually very inviting and colorful. It's a fairly moderate sized place that invites you in. The service here was phenomenal. I did go at a slow time which was around the lunch hour. The service was very quick especially with refilling drinks and refilling the chips and salsa which I thought was a huge plus. I personally eat a ton of chips and salsa before the actual meal and love to get refills quick. The food also came out very fast within fifteen minutes. Fast and efficient. The food was as good as it gets. It was nothing spectacular, but it did the job and I was satisfied to a full degree. I got the chicken chimichanga which is my go-to at any Mexican place. I was a huge fan of the amount of queso they glazed on top of it. They were very liberal with it which was great. The salsa that came with the chips was also very good. You could taste the bits of cilantro in it which makes it seem authentic. Overall El Azteca will fulfill your Mexican food needs with good service, good food and a good experience. I have come here multiple times over the past few weeks. This place has really replaced our go-to Mexican restaurant. This place really does deserve all the love in the world as the food is amazing and has many different flavors. My favorite so far has been their street tacos. They remind me so much of the street tacos that I had in LA. To me, that's impressive because that means the food was seasoned and cooked just right. I have tried other items on their menu and all were delicious as well. None of their food has disappointed anyone in my party. The service overall is really good. People frequently check on us and fill up our drinks right away. They are also super friendly and help us out with different diet restrictions or requests. El Azteca is a very relaxing restaurant. I love the colorful chairs and paintings. It has a nice ambience; I wanted to spend more time there. The staff were all very helpful in explaining items on the menu, getting the door, and being patient with my inquiries. I give the atmosphere and staff 5 stars. It seems like a very comfortable and friendly place. I ordered a Enchiladas Verdes to go. When I got home, the enchiladas were covered in sour cream and I did not see or taste any salsa verde. That was especially disappointing bc I'd told the guy who took my order that salsa verde was my favorite and that I loved it. I got a cup of salsa in the bag. I assumed that it was salsa verde but it was a very mild salsa roja. I'd also told the guy who took my order that I liked hot and spicy foods and he said the salsa verde was so the salsa roja was doubly disappointing for me: I missed out on the salsa verde and the sauce was far too mild for my taste. Overall, the enchiladas were OK with the potential to be excellent if they had the right sauce and weren't smothered in sour cream. I doubt that I'll order them again, though. The sour cream was partially my fault. The description for Enchiladas Verdes says "served with rice, lettuce, sour cream, and tomato." When the restaurants I'm used to describe an item that way, it means it's served on the side, especially when it's to go bc otherwise the sour cream ruins the texture of the underlying food when it's on the food for so long. All the other items (but the tomato, which was in the enchiladas) were on the side here too. I should have verified that's what they meant. I don't understand why I didn't see or taste any salsa verde for an item called "Enchiladas Verdes", though, especially after I"d told the person taking my order that I loved salsa verde. I also don't understand why they gave me a very mild red sauce when I asked for a hot and spicy salsa verde. That said, the enchiladas had potential. The tortillas were excellent: hot, just the right amount of flakey and the right amount of pliable. They were amazing! I really enjoyed the tortillas. The shredded chicken was also very good. I think if I'd eaten in the restaurant, I could have gotten more salsa verde and the enchiladas would have been at least very good (unless the salsa wasn't but everything else was good so that's unlikely). Bottom line: check your order before you leave. I should have but I was in a hurry so I didn't. I plan to come back and give El Azteca another try. The restaurant and staff were very good and the food has potential. Finally some good Mexican food this side of the border. By border I mean the other side of the Rio Missourah, the STC side. Ironically the last time we had a Mexican food craving we drove past this place because it was in a strip mall, and headed to Sombrero's big compound instead. I would love to have that moment back because Sombrero's was awful, and El Azteca rocks! What I really like about it is the bright colorful decor, and the guy who sits there, and strums on the guitar during dinner. Its just a fun place to go, and twice this winter has gotten me out of the cold, and into a summer mindset. I like to pretend I am back in Tucson when I go here, and its 110 degrees out side. I hate winter so much that I would gladly take a 110 degree day, and embrace it ever so snugly. The food at El Azteca is typical Mexican fare, nothing crazy, no 10 page menu like some other places. Ahem! Sombreros Ahem! The food quality at El Azteca is good, and the flavor is outstanding. What I have learned being back in STL from AZ is that the idea behind our Mexican food is "how many different variations of plain ground beef can we make?". So far I have had the carne tacos, tamales and enchiladas, and all 3 have been very good. I would also like to note that their verde salsa is off the chain. El Azteca has a great kids menu as well. It is really tough to differentiate yourself as a sit down, relatively cheap Mexican restaurant. El Azteca doesn't seem to care about that "differentiation" as much as they do sending out good food and providing very good customer service. The first thing that I noticed as one of my friends and I strolled in at about 1:30 is that the place was relatively slow for a weekday. I suppose it may be more of a dinner place? But I really don't know that for sure. The restaurant is a lot bigger on the inside than it looks. Anyway, generally what I get whenever I go to a Mexican place of this nature is arroz con pollo. I did the same thing here. It was very good at El Azteca but I still like El Maguey's version better. Probably just a matter of personal preference though. Service was excellent. They kept the chips and salsa flowing as well as the our drinks; all this while providing a very warm and comfortable, unforced personality. Overall a rock solid four star experience. I called and spoke with the new owner, Manuel. He is not "El Maguey". He is still a minority owner in another El Mag, but he is not making El Axteca an El Mag, nor is he changing the menu/recipes.
