Ya'll, this place is a hidden gem! When I say the food is off the chain, I mean it. From the moment we walked in, the service was great and the staff was actually smiling, which always makes the experience better. One of the best surprises was the bean dip they serve with the chips. I never thought about pairing bean dip with chips and salsa like that, but it was delicious and a great start to the meal. The portions were generous, so you definitely get your money's worth. The margaritas were tasty and strong enough to give you a little buzz--so definitely don't drink and drive! Our waitress checked on us regularly, and the service was truly on point the entire time. We actually just happened to drive by and noticed this new spot, and I'm so glad we stopped in. Great food, great service, and a really enjoyable experience overall. We were looking for somewhere to eat for lunch and happened to stumble across this Mexican restaurant. It was a great fine I have to say. I ended up getting a quesadilla, which is always my go to and they did a great job. This is one of the very few restaurants that I've seen serve a bean dip along with the salsa so I really like that. I have a new favorite Mexican spot. I have visited here several times before but only to pick up a take-out order. This was my first time dining in. We arrived around 5:15 pm on a Friday and we were able to be seated right away. When we left an hour later it was packed with a 10 minute wait for a table. I visited a second time during a Saturday lunch and I was able to be seated immediately. Practically before I sat down, there was a basket of tortilla chips, a bowl of salsa, and surprisingly, a bowl of a chorizo queso dip all complimentary set on my table. The service here is five stars. I don't think I ever have to ask for my drink to be filled or plates to be cleared, etc. They are on top of it. The food is absolutely amazing! I've brought two different friends to this restaurant and they both raved about it and can't wait to return. I absolutely love the Cadillac margarita, it is perfect. I've tried vegetarian dishes, and the fish tacos. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The ambience is colorful and celebrating all the wonderful aspects of Mexican culture. Hidden gem alert, hidden gem alert! Driving thru St. Peter's we stumbled onto El Gial restaurant. El Guatal has everything you need from a Mexican restaurant, great food, great drinks and great prices. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and noticed the restaurant was very busy after the lunch rush. No problem finding seating and was quickly served chips and salsa. Our server took our drink order and provided the specials. From the look of all other customers margaritas were popular. In talking with the couple next to us they frequently stop by for a tasty beverage. Lots of excellent food choices for any pallet but can deliver a spicy for those who enjoy hot dishes. I had the Birria tacos and they were fantastic, 4 tacos with a side of rice and consume , enough for 2 meals. I've been here a couple time and both experiences were great. This time they delivered delicious complimentary bean dip along with the chips and salsa. The margarita is tasty, but on the sweet side. I know some of you love that! I've tried the three enchilada plate (I can't remember the name!) and the burrito bowl with steak and shrimp. Both great choices and I would order either again. Didn't wait long at all for our food and it was delicious. I have been waiting a long time for a great taco place to come to OFallon/st peters and it has finally happened. The menu is quite long and the only thing I wasn't the biggest fan of was the rice and beans. Everything else was incredible. I will be returning more than once. While El Guatal maybe new, word has clearly spread pretty quickly about how good this place is! The restaurant was pretty full on a Saturday night at 6:30. We hung out at the bar and had some margaritas, until they were able to seat our party of 6 which only took about 10 minutes. The service is awesome here. Everyone is super nice, and attentive. Chips and salsa were brought as soon as we finished the last round and a glass wasn't empty long before someone came to ask if we needed another drink. The food is fantastic! For me, I'm immediately judging any Mexican restaurant based in their chips and salsa. At el guatal they are AMAZING. The chips are super fresh, served still warm and having the slightest bit of oil from being fried which I love. Thin, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. The salsa is fresh, with a little bit of heat which I loved. Pretty much all of us ordered the birria tacos having seen pictures beforehand. They did not let us down! The birria consume they came with was fantastic as well. I love that aside from the frozen ones, all the margaritas are made fresh to order. Whether on the rocks or frozen, both are superb. Living in the city, it's not often a spot in St Charles County wows me but El Guatal did just that! Can't wait to go back and try more! read more

Visited here for dinner 1/16/25 food was Ok, not great. Bad part was the live music was super loud to the point of being uncomfortable. Instead of a nice dinner we had to literally yell at the table. The music was also all in Spanish--- like anyone understands that. We rammed our food down only ate half of it and left as fast as we could. Not coming back. read more

I waited months for this place to open.....complete let down.....premade frozen burger with bacon and an egg is one of their top menu items.... I mean it's not bad thing to eat if all your friends want Mexican and you don't.......but they ask you how you want your burger cooked leading you to believe it's at least made fresh ground beef.....nope..... Their chips are good.....salsa couldn't make it through the salsa they threw in with the free chips to try. I would be surprised if they last the year. read more

My husband and I did take out last weekend, the food was so delish. Usually we're apprehensive about take out Mexican food (never usually travels well IMO) BUT this place was the exception. I'm dreaming about their bean and cheese burrito, ingredients wise it was nothing special but the simplicity is what I loved. Great quality beans, great quality sauces, all around great. The reason for a 4 instead of a 5 is well the chips were a little stale, as well as we didn't dine in so I can't speak to the overall experience. Would definitely recommend! read more

Just went to the new El Guatal Mexican restaurant for the first time for a late lunch. Greeted promptly at the door and seated. Carman, our waitress, arrived quickly to bring us salsa and bean dip and chips and took our drink order. I got the shrimp fajitas on a bed of grilled onions and peppers and a side of grilled mixed vegetables instead of beans and rice as I'm doing low carb. Both were delicious. Best shrimp I've had in a long while, perfectly cooked. I sneaked a taste of the chips and bean dip which I've never seen served before. I could have inhaled the whole thing. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. Very cozy. Carman was very responsive to my questions and very friendly and welcoming. I wish I'd taken pictures of the food as the plating was very nice and the food appeared as advertised in the menu and on the site but I was greedy and dove right in. This is easily my new favorite Mexican restaurant. It has a convenient drive-thru where they include chips and salsa with your meals for free same as if you'd come inside to sit down. Inside is very clean and nicely decorated and organized. Service is prompt and the staff is very friendly. The bar and dining room both have enormous, high-end, well-placed televisions for watching sportsball whenever the latest game is on. Bathrooms were clean and stocked. I have so far had the chicken enchiladas verde, the puerco con salsa verde, and the mini trompos and all of them were excellent. The pork is super flavorful and tender and the sauces and marinades used are delicious. My dad has the fajitas bipolar and was thrilled with the variety of proteins and the serving size. The tortillas are always fresh and flavorful (kinda smoky?) and make for some killer tacos. The salsa and chips are delicious but heavy on the cilantro so be warned, weirdos who think it tastes like soap. read more

When I drove past the bright beautiful image on the sign caught my eye, Then I realized that the old Steak N Shake building was looking bright and new and the parking lot was full on a Wednesday night. I came home and searched this new place, Thursday at 11 a.m. we were there having lunch! The decor is bright and festive and the restaurant is very clean. The chips Salsa and bean dip were flavorful and delicious. I ordered the $5 lunch special margarita, frozen with Tajin. I am not sure if it was because we were there so early in the day, but the margarita did not seem quite frozen. Our food came out quick and was delivered hot and just as ordered. I had the chicken Flautas. They had a good flavor, but I would have liked them better if the chicken was more of a shredded, salsa chicken, instead it appeared to be grilled chicken cut into chunks, and some times the all the filling came out at once. My husband was not thrilled with his chimi. He said that it has too much rice in it and that the steak did not seem to have much seasoning, he did really like the queso that was served over his chimi.
