Altos Cantina Mexican Kitchen is an awesome restaurant to grab some dinner at! I tried this one for the first time on a visit to Eureka, and it was a great experience. The menu is massive, and they have a ton of margaritas and other cocktails (sadly I couldn't enjoy this time - had to drive). I tried the Camarones à la diabla and the enchiladas verde. Both were very good. The enchilada verde sauce was really tasty complimented the meat and cheese well. The camarones à la diabla was also delicious, and not overwhelmingly spicy. The portions are pretty generous, and our waiter was very friendly - the prices are also super reasonable. If you're in Eureka and want a good sit down Mexican restaurant, check them out. read more

I decided to stop here for a lunch special and a margarita fix. Private parking lot. Walking in , building dimly lit. Nice and clean environment. Rosalba was my server. She was attentive. I decided on a lunch taco salad. Reasonable price but it definitely fell short. This was the smallest shell I've ever seen and the ingredients were lackluster. Not inviting and very bland. The shredded chicken reminded me of tuna and only sour cream came as a dressing. I was not impressed at all. I'm not sure how you are a Mexican bar but do not serve flights. I settled on a frozen strawberry banana margarita. It was just ok. Consistency was more liquid than frozen thick. . Overall visit was just ok. read more

Food at this restaurant was pretty good! Order was correct, generous portion sizes, and decent prices. The reason for the crap review is the service. Our waitress was too busy chit chatting to refill drinks (had to ask someone else), bring refills on chips (we ordered cheese dip), and checked to see how our food tasted when we were half way done. I had to go and find her to request the check. Want to guess where she was? Chit chatting in the corner, holding our check, but completely surprised and rude when I asked for it. Our party of 4 were greeted immediately by the smiling host before being escorted to our table. The restaurant is sparkling clean and beautifully decorated. The waitperson came to take our drink order, put it in, before serving the margaritas quickly. They were perfectly tasty. She took our dinner order and was appropriately attentive throughout our meal. My carne asada tacos were generous, tender, and packed with flavor. My spouse got fish tacos (tilapia). They were lightly battered and perfectly fried. They were not drowning in sauce but instead it was served on the side -- exactly as he likes. The other 2 got steak tacos. Again, absolutely perfect. We all had beans, rice, and nicely chopped salad sides. The pico was fresh and so good. Personally, I was thankful my food wasn't drowning in sour cream. I usually am not in this area but met some friends at a center point who were staying out at meremac state park. First visit and it was pleasant. All of the popular dishes, service was good and very friendly. I had the tamale lunch special as tamales are an item many Tex Mex restaurants don't have. They were passable (too much massa coating IMO). The guys has chicken enchiladas and fajitas which they liked. The ambiance was clean, if the theme and looked relatively new. If I was in the area again, I'd probably return. read more

The food and value were excellent. I really mean it. I loved everything about the eating experience except.... Who ever runs the kitchen must INSIST that EVERYONE uses antiperspirant. They may not believe it, but their odor saturates and clings to the food. Because our olfactory nerves (sense of smell) gets saturated quickly, people cannot smell the odor after a while. I was able to overcome the tainted smell, because the dish tasted so darn good. But that flaw was really unfortunate. read more

I started with a margarita. I had a choice between small, medium or large. I went with a small regular margarita with salt. It was a little heavy on the sour mix. I tried their chicken fajitas. When the fajitas arrived I noticed the chicken was sliced incredibly thin. I strongly dislike when restaurants do this. The chicken is so thin I had to put on my reading glasses to find all the chicken. The chicken tasted good and it was tender. The bell peppers and tomatoes were overcooked and limp. Everything arrived hot. Sat at the bar and received great service. The ambiance seemed more like a sports bar than a Mexican restaurant. What smaller town needs three Mexican restaurants? Eureka! Altos Cantina is a nice addition to our options. We chose to eat here on a Friday after work a week after they opened -- so that explains some of the busyness. We arrived at 5:20pm and were seated right away at one of the last open tables. (By the time we left, there was a decent sized line waiting outside.) Chips and salsa were brought to the table right away, and our server arrived shortly after. (Salsa had some kick to it!) We ordered margaritas and dinner. The margaritas were just ok to us. (Be aware of drink prices. The menu only shows prices for the house margaritas. We had sticker shock when we got the bill because we had upgraded.) The food was really good. My husband ordered the chimichangas, and I had the Fajitas Alambre. The fajitas were SO good--a nice mixture of meats and veggies topped with cheese dip. The jalapeños add quite a bit of spice. I'd come back just for the fajitas. Service was great, the restaurant turned out nicely (a former Applebee's building), decor is understated but pleasant with agave farming artwork, and there's plenty of parking. This is genuinely the nastiest and I mean NASTIEST Salsa and Guacamole I have ever eaten. Is there 13 year olds back there cooking??? Why are we scared of seasoning??? Why are we scared of spice??? I don't quite understand how this place has top reviews. Place is decorated well on the inside, but the parking lot is set up terrible and is too small for the size of the building. Service isn't great but isn't horrible either. Enchiladas were overly salty, and the Carne Asada was dried out.....meaning it was old. Stumbled onto this restaurant on a day most other restaurants were closed and was I glad! There are always many Mexican restaurants, all claiming to be authentic food! I spoke Spanish to one waitress in a Mexican restaurant and she was definitely lost. Altos Cantina is authentic. The side dishes, always a dead giveaway were fantastic. Guacamole was very tasty. I had the Steak Tampiquenia and it was amazing! We got some fresh grilled corn on the cob which was delicious. Even the coffee was great! I am from Texas and I recently moved to the St. Louis area for school and I was completely amazed by the food from here. My boyfriend and I came here one night to try it out and we both left full and satisfied! They season their food well, the portions are great for the price, and overall, the food gave me a nostalgic feeling that I yearn for when I go to a Mexican restaurant. We went to this restaurant because our favorite local place was closed. It was very crowded. In fact. 3 groups in line all said they were there because their place was closed. We were seated quickly. But to a dirty table. We stood, waiting for it to be cleared and cleaned . We were given chips right away. But at the 15 minute point , with nothing to drink at all, I went to the bar to get us drinks . The owner Jesus was very busy behind the bar, and very apologetic. He made our drinks and I brought them to our table . We still had no server . Jesus came back and took our order . WIN! The food can out rather quickly, and hot. Very good ! We had more drinks and Jesus took good care of us. There was a table near ours, where the children had spilled soda all over the place, and we tried to direct the hostess to the issue as she was sitting people. They pointed it out. All the neighboring tables were offering napkins for them to use, but they didn't take them. Eventually, it all got cleaned up, and that other table was seated. Jesus was the only bartender and was extremely busy. I did have to go to the bar to get my bill, but took care of it swiftly. He did acknowledge that they were incredibly shortstaffed. From what I could see there were three servers for the entire building. And they were hustling . The food is a bit spicier than I am used to, but it was cooked well presented well. Their guacamole is superb! And their top shelf margarita is even better! Will we go back there? Maybe... I have a favorite other hotspot in the community that is my go to. We were an early bird group of eight on a Tuesday night. The salsa and chips provided were first rate and fresh. Orders were taken promptly, and the dinners were served timely, hot and fresh. I had the shrimp a la diabla and never have I had better. There was a slight smokiness to it, as there should be. IDK if the shrimp were wood grilled or if it was the sauce. WOW! Was definitely not expecting the food to be this great. We stopped in just to try the new restaurant in town and were blown away by how good the food is. This is not your run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant. I had the Pollo Lagos (grilled chicken with a lot of tasty veggies) and my husband had the Pollo Feliz (chicken, shrimp, and veggies in an outstanding sauce). Both dishes featured tender and tasty chicken, and the veggies were flavorful and cooked to perfection. A lot of places overcook veggies, so this was wonderful. I can't speak to the margaritas, but we were happy to be able to order a Mexican Coke. I'm sure we'll try the margaritas at some point, but we're definitely looking forward to trying other items from the extensive menu. Needs a better way to keep track of people waiting. I had walked in to a family of three waiting. Said I had a group of three. She looked and said okay there will be a little wait. The other two came in my group came in and a family of four right after. Lady got way confused and couldn't even remember who was first. Maybe get a notebook to write down for a waiting list.
