Subpar for a group gathering. I came here as part of an eleven-person party yesterday, and almost all of us walked out dissatisfied. Firstly, the service - all of our orders got mixed up. A person who wanted medium well got medium rare. Another person who wanted medium rare got medium. All of our side dishes didn't come out properly. And when we asked our server to correct our mistakes, they appeared disgruntled and flustered instead of accommodating. Second, the "medium" looked more like raw instead of medium. And the skirt steaks were very chewy and a little unpleasant. Lastly, I have a very strong distaste for when gratuity is automatically added to the tip - and it was quite generous for the service we actually received. I would probably not come back here. I'm from Uruguay so I know MEAT! the sausage was a little dry we got the mixed grill for one cause I knew it would be enough even though we were 2. On the other hand the service is MAD slow and inattentive... when trying to get waiters attention he NEVER looks to the table.. the waiter asks if everything is Ok at the end of the meal...Chimichurri ? he asks ? my response yes please .. after 5 minutes we have to remind him about it .... we run out of water in the middle of the meal so had to eat without ANY water at the end of the meal when he came over we asked for a beer which I gulped down ! I've generally ignored this place for years and opted to instead go across the street to La Esquina Criolla to get my Argentinian fix. But, we decided to try something new. The space is small, but very cozy. The menu was beautifully illustrated. The waiters are all dressed in uniform which is a bit of a surprise to find on Corona Avenue. Like their neighbors across the street, they serve a wide variety of succulent, grilled meats like short ribs and skirt steak. However, the main difference between the two places is that here they also have a good number of seafood dishes. There were lots of appetizing pasta options available as well. They started us off with some prosciutto and cheese, topped with a drizzle of olive oil and served alongside some crusty bread that comes from a bakery just across the street. Very savory. We also tried their baked chicken empanadas. They were filled with diced red peppers, and surprisingly, very light. We ordered shrimp and mussels provencal served with a rice and an order of grilled salmon. The mussels, while a bit salty for my taste were pretty good. The shrimp came in a limited supply but were also tasty. I think the salmon was the best of our three entrees. It was char grilled to perfection, we all enjoyed it best. For dessert, the three of us shared the churros casseros with dulce de leche. It looked amazing when it arrived at our table and tasted even better than it looked. Dusted with brown sugar and served with two dollops of fresh cream, really fabulous. I enjoyed my meal at El Gauchito. Be forewarned: it can get pricey. But, there are a number of more economical dishes on the menu, so I wouldn't let it stop you from giving it a try. I'd recommend this place to friends, even if just for dessert. read more

I'm more of a reader than writer of reviews on here, but this place definitely deserves it. Simply put, my favorite Argentine restaurant in NYC. I think I've eaten at them all, and sure others are good, but for the price, the quality, the quantity, and simply the comfort, this is the spot. Selfishly I'd rather not tell everyone this, b/c I've only told good friends, but Yelp readers deserve to know. :) I'd say if you're going on a first date, head to Azul in the LES. It's much pricier, and the food probably just as good. But for a place that you can always count on, AND but some extra raw steak to cook @ home (they have a butcher in the back that sells beef and other Argentine groceries such as yerba mate, you can't beat this. At least on one visit, order the grass-fed rib eye. It's about $30, including a couple sides, and can 100% be split between two hungry guys. The thing is like 2lbs. The parrilla is also great. Just make sure you're into all the non-American parts of the cow. Only thing I was every disappointed in was the grapefruit soda I bought from them was flat/expired once. So just check the date on that. Everything else is super fresh. Lastly, eat downstairs. The upstairs restaurant just seems to have slower seating, and less of a vibe. Enjoy. read more

This place is exactly as, in my humble opinion, it should be. The reservation was very flexible. The hostess was friendly. The bathroom was clean. The service was exemplary. If they have a school of waiting and busing tables, then the practical skills portion ought to be following these guys and girls around. They were extremely attentive without getting in the way. They sort of asked permission for everything. The bus boy was wonderful. This was my first time there. The steak I had was very flavorful. It was very fresh and came out fine. It was thick but not very wide, although it filled me up. My son had a combination and his skirt steak was also a nice cut as were his short ribs{3}. Dessert was fine. Yes it was more money than my son figured. He was taking me out. It was 96 dollars. We did not have wine. Although my on did have a fresh juice which was very fresh and tasty. We both said that we would go back. The French fries I had were very good. My son liked his rice and beans. When you have paid 89 dollars for just a steak at certain places, 96 for two people with sides is not too bad. This is true especially in light of the service. This place is the real deal. I'm originally from Argentina so I feel like I know what I'm talking about when it comes to meat hehe. I ordered 65 pounds of meat for a wedding reception I was organizing. And OH MY GOD. The meat was delicious. I could swear they were better than those I used to get in Argentina. Do they export the better cuts? I got: 25 pounds of skirt steak 25 pounds of sirloin 15 pounds of short ribs 75 chorizos Chimichurri sauce. I highly recommend these cuts. I will get blood sausages next time. I interacted mostly with Martin. He is really helpful. He even gave me the phone number of Juan Carlos, an argentinian griller that has a 'portable' wood grill. The steak here is average not the best as it was before, across the street the meat quality is better and cheaper. The ambiance is normal, overly crowded. Their complimentary platter ham and cheeses is great along with the bread. Not a place to take a date since there is no ambiance but ok to eat if you do not want to travel further. I picked up meat here for a Father's Day bbq. I picked up chorizo, short ribs, and skirt steak. I can see that I am extremely happy the quality of meat received. The cuts of meet were absolutely perfect! We marinated the steak and the short ribs differently and both cook great. The chorizo was excellent as well and I really want to find out what they put in it! This place is a butcher shop with a restaurant. The decor is quite Queens if you understand what I mean. The wall tiles are decorated with famous Argentinians. The food can get quite pricey depending on what you order. I love meat and this is definitely the place for it. I ordered the platter that came with short rib, skirt steak, and a chorizo. The meat was done right and I ate everything on my plate. I tend to like meat with fat on it which in fact was the case here. If you don't like the fat on your meat this may not be the place for you. With the meal, my co-workers and I had sangria, which was quite good as you could taste the alcohol in it. El Gauchito is unique in that it has an Argentine butcher shop associated with the restaurant, in fact IN the restaurant. This guarantees fresh, well-cut, well-selected meats. And meats is what this restaurant, like all Argentinian restaurants, has going for it. Try the mixed grill, or the skirt steaks, or the boneless NY strip (bife de chorizo) and you will not, cannot be disappointed. Service can get spotty and frustrating, and the place is tiny, so a group of 12 will have a huge problem. Be prepared to wait for a table and wait for your food. But it's worth it. Empanadas are out of this world! DEfinitely a must-have. But stay away from the pastas and the chicken, there are much better places for that. read more

I love places like this....in the middle of know where...(at least to me since in NY we had to drive to it, but easy to park and to find) restaurant/butcher shop/mini store of specialty items (like dulce de leche sauce - which is the entire reason I found this place). I had a pina drink and my friend had another good drink like passion fruit mixed with milk. I thought I was just getting a small spinach tortilla (omlette like) but it was HUGE! I couldn't finish it all. And the breaded beef was so soft. And to top it all off these meals were cheap for sooo much food ($8 and $14) The reason this place is as good as it gets is because of how welcoming they were. It was definitely a family own place. Many generations and our server shook our hands and another waiter came over too and introduced himself (ok ok maybe a little flirtatious, but all in good fun). Also a place to practice/speak spanish without feeling uncomfortable. And the dessert (which is really 1/3 of my rating) was AMAZING. Awesome place that an Argentine colleague recommended to me. I spent a month in BA this summer and really appreciated the vibe and the coals under our parilla. We got the traditional provoleta, parilla and flan for dessert. It was an early dinner and it seemed like most of the other folks were regulars. They all had some ceramic pitcher of wine? El Gauchito was recommended to me by some Argentine friends. The meat was excellent and we sampled some classier appetizers that you won't find at other Argentine restaurants in Queens, such as cauliflower in a cream sauce. The restaurant is a little small and so there was a line out the door, but the decor and atmosphere are very pleasant, with photos of famous Argentines adorning one wall and yerba mate paraphernalia adorning the other wall. The location is less than ideal, more than half a mile from the subway, but it was worth the trek. I don't know if I would recommend it for people coming from Manhattan since there are other Argentine spots that are easier to get to. read more

If you're a meat lover you will love this place. Try the bbq plater it's huge and you get different types of cuts. It goes well with the chimichurry sauce; the atmosphere is also nice plus you can get some decent Argentine wine to go with your meal. The other plates on the menu are good too like their pastas and seafood. I'm biased towards a good grill and this place is the best IMO.
