Eating is not just to be full but also can be an enjoyable experience. I am glad to witness the transition. As for the food, the meat cuts are not all fat as some places and food carts do. We tried Little Skewers and unfortunately it wasn't a great experience for us. The skewers arrived warm at best, not hot, and the flavor was just okay. One thing that really bothered me was that the waiter accidentally placed another customer's skewers on our plate, then took them back and served them to the other table. That was very off-putting and made me question the restaurant's food handling practices. As for the food itself, the seasoning seemed off and the dishes were a little bland for my taste. It may simply be a matter of personal preference, but the flavors did not impress me. The restaurant is located inside a building and is fairly small. I stumbled into little skewer after finding out that spring shabu was not truly all you can eat. We ordered the lamb, lamb belly, beef skewers, spiral potato and the malatang soup. The soup blew me away. One sip and my roommate and I gave each other the "oh my god" look. The soup was well seasoned, mildly spicy, savory, and somehow creamy. I genuinely think this is the best soup I've had in New York so far. Out of all the skewers, I'd order the lamb belly again. The skewers had little meat and half of it was tough. If you know, you know. Almost unassuming given all the different restaurants in Flushing. Everything is super flavorful and yet not too overpowering. Each skewer order comes with multiple pieces (3, 5, 10, 20, etc) so do take note. We got the raw salmon skewers, scallop, enoki mushrooms, and beef, pork belly, oyster mushroom, and rice cake skewers. I hosted my birthday party here and liked that the staff was very attentive and accommodating for my large group of 12. We had a semi-private room to ourselves and they kept checking in every so often to make sure our needs were met. The food and drinks were also really good but I especially liked trying the Osmanthus Wine and Lychee Wine because they came in such pretty pouring bottles. This is a good spot for large groups since the skewers are meant to be shared. There's also live music at night but we left before we got to see any musicians. The skewer, as expected, has a lot of sticks, but very little per bite. I think I'd rather get the meat skewers somewhere else. The potato one was VERY good and I was impressed. Totally hilarious! It was by recommendation I came here even though I have seen and passed by numerous of times! If you know what mini brands are, it is the same reaction when the skewers came out! You order on an iPad here and the service was pretty quick. My friends and I got the big set of soju shots for $20 (a great deal!), the cucumber salad, salmon sashimi, sausage, bread, and a bunch of skewers. Everything was delicious, and I loved the seasoning for the skewers. Came here with a large group of friends and I was pleasantly surprised just due to the fact that skewers have never really been on my radar for food. The interior is beautiful and looks like historical China, and the food is delicious. Overall, I loved the skewers. We got a large variety such as okra, king oyster mushrooms, taco gluten (which is basically a thick doughy glutinous noodle, very yummy), cauliflower, and then various meats. I personally only had the veggies and they were so flavorful and juicy, and grilled so nicely. You're able to choose the level of spiciness and we got a mix of mild and medium. I have an average spice tolerance and didn't notice a difference, and since they stack all the skewers on the tray I don't think there's a point in getting different spice levels unless you're really diligent on separating and remembering everything. The seasoning they use on the skewers is pretty much the same for all of them and I didn't think the medium was spicy at all, but one of the friends who has a much lower spice tolerance thought it was really spicy. Despite the same seasoning being used on all the skewers, I still really enjoyed it because the natural flavors of each item was still able shine through. While I didn't eat any of the meats, I did noticed that they do run pretty small. We also got other non-skewer items, such as the enoki mushrooms and chives: both delicious and a similar seasoning to the skewers. The eggplantato: not bad but could be a texture problem for some due to the mushiness which I think is intentional and similar to mashed potato, and the flavor isn't distributed too well. Wasn't a crowd favorite. Mala tang pot: we got medium and this was mild at best. The flavor of the broth itself though was pretty good: a little nutty and a little numbing. I should've known better when I couldn't smell the aroma of fresh seared and sizzling meat anywhere in the restaurant. You're forced to order skewers on an ipad in bulk, 3/10/20 etc. some come with just one like the potato whirl but not many. The potato was passable but low bar for making a fried potato edible. The meat was served tepid, dry and overly seasoned. When I finally complained (i am not normally someone that sends food back or complains so this was a growing disasterous situation) the manager tries to say they cook the food fresh by heating it for 30secs before the runner walks the skewers out to us. On a SATURDAY NIGHT, i ordered an array to get a feel for this place, potato, brisket, mini lamb belly, chicken wing and asparagus to start. The overwhelming prevalent spice mix is a spice blend for this region and so is the meat skewers style service which I've had it before with a great experience (also why I was eager to try this restaurant). But its the only flavor and used too heavily. The fact that I stopped to take pictures is telling. Usually I am eating the food as soon as it hits the table, not one to take pictures instead of enjoying. At first I chalked the experience up to a miss when you are trying new restaurants but got more and more bothered and the manager's response was infuriating. Our original plan, was to take the "L" that happens when your try new places and muscle through what we ordered, leave and just grab a quick something before we head home for the night. But the answers from the manager just put me over the top. When I said the food obviously wasn't cooked fresh or grilled to order, her answer was "yes it is, we heat the food for 30secs before it hits your table." Ummmm I am a trained cook. What food is done in 30secs?!?? And again, my bad for not noticing the lack of food smells in the air. When eating at restaurants that serves freshly grilled/charcoaled/cooked meat you can hear a sizzle or smell the grease and meat while it's being cooked and walked to you. When I said the brisket is chewy and the fat isn't even rendered to be able to eat, her answer "oh honey! Brisket is supposed to be chewy!!" Ummmm I've eaten brisket across multiple cultures, countries and cook types, yes brisket is a tough cut of meat but after you cook/prepare the cut, IT SHOULDN'T BE SERVED CHEWY!!!you did it wrong!!!!! In the pic you can see the uneaten food, the paper isn't even burning or warm and the white of the cartilage/fat is still present. The chicken wing had a glaze that was hopefully going to be a slightly different flavor/texture but then they covered it with that spice blend again so not difference in experience. You can see it uneaten. the restaurant spent all the money on decorating. They had cute rooms for larger parties cuz usually that's how you enjoy skewer style meats as meat in this region isn't usually eating meat in such large quantities as we are now accustomed. The griddle thing at the end of your table is lit the moment you sit down to order off an ipad. I imagined that thing was meant to keep the other skewers warm as you eat your current skewer since they serve you 10-20 per order at one time but again when I mention this in my complaint the managers answer was "lol, no that's not what this is for" Again, i should've noticed the paper not being burned or warm and it's just 2 stupid tea lights. The asparagus was steamed or boiled first and served with tooo much sauce and spice. Was terribly disappointing. Again served in a cast iron dish as if to say they cooked it in there?!? Like fajita vaggies and meat/ korean meats get served on the iron as if it was pulled straight from the fire. I looked around the restaurant and it felt like no one cared they were served cold food. No one had a hot searing bite, no one else had any smoke or heat rising from their food either unless you order something in a bowl. The table next to us had some steam coming from a ceramic pot saucey soupy I think veggie dish. Ugh, my early birthday dinner was miserable fail and that over-spiced flavor was stuck in our mouths as we desperately tried to mask it with anything else as walked back through prince street. The burps were a continuous reminder of the dinner even long after. They won't be around for long and will be another distant memory of failed restaurants in this prince at area. I have no idea how they have such a high rating. Did the original chef quit? But it was a saturday night?!? How could you not have fresh food cooking with a proper cook????? I was introduced to Little Skewer by a friend and decided to give it a try. It wasn't busy at all on a Saturday at noon. Upon arrival, we were greeted and immediately brought over to a table in the back. There is limited lighting per table as you may see in the pictures. There are two cushions per side, which gives a nice touch. We ordered a bit of everything to try, from beef and lamb skewers to instant noodles with and without soup. The skewers were very minimal in size, but came in a batch. There's nothing over the top about what we ordered but had a good variety of things to try. Very unique atmosphere where you feel transported to ancient China (except the modern Chinese music). We went on a Friday afternoon and it was pretty empty. We ordered chicken gizzard, beef belly, fish, chicken thighs, and squid which was all well seasoned. We picked the mild spicy flavor which was the perfect spice level as the heat level built up over time and paired well with a Tsing Tao. For 3 of us it was only $50 before tax. The staff were friendly and the ambiance was nice. However, due to the poor flavor of the food, I had to give this place a 2 star. From a peripheral perspective this place checks off the spot but food wise, it's a no for me. We ordered 3 different sets of meat skewers (pork belly, beef, and lamb) and they tasted bland as if it were steamed and not bbq'd. The scallops we ordered were also bland and small portion wise. Pretty good skewers! Don't be intimidated by the amount of skewers that come per order (usually 10) because they are teeny tiny! We shared exactly 100 skewers between four people. I enjoyed the meat skewers and the chicken skin one was surprisingly crispy without being oily. We also got their scallop, enoki in garlic sauce, and a soupy malatang? dish that were also nice and flavorful. They have small shots that are affordable and fun, not too much alcohol content though. Service was pretty attentive, you order on an ipad and they come pretty often to empty out your waste bin. Such a great find in downtown Flushing. I am a huge fan of meat skewers and often crave for those amazing street vendors that sell them on the side of the street. However, it is always nice to be able to sit and enjoy them leisurely, instead of eating them on a street corner with cars rushing by. This is more of a late night bar/lounge vibe than a brunch place, but it was nice a quiet on a recent Sat at noonish with only 3 other tables occupied. We got a mix of different skewers, including pork, beef, lamb, squid and tofu skin. The individual pieces of meat is very very small, but you get 20 pieces per order, so it's still a pretty good deal. I can't imagine the amount of work that goes into treading those skewers. The seasoning is perfect, just the right amount of spiciness and so flavorful. The only one that wasn't up to par was the tofu skin, it was a bit too dry. The brown sugar fried rice cake was absolutely delicious and helped to cut through the spiciness of the meat skewers. There are also free sides you can take advantage of, including chips, sunflower seeds and an awesome jelly drink. Service was impeccable and the space is just so freaking adorable. I wanted to love this place, but so many things went wrong. - We had to wait more than 2 hours for our table. They don't take reservations, so you have to put your name down when you get there. On a bustling Sat night, all the large-seater tables were occupied by drunk, raucous parties who kept ordering more and more drinks. As gorgeous as the interior is, it's not well-designed. Too many tables/booths for 4 people and too few for larger groups. Most of the tables and seats aren't movable either, so they can't be configured into larger arrangements. This is just stupid for a space this big. - The food. It wasn't very good. For a place literally calling themselves Little Skewer, you'd think, well, the skewers would be on point. Let's start with the only decent ones: Good skewers: - Pork Belly: Tiny but perfect - Lamb: Tiny and a bit dry Meh Skewers: - Beef Kidney with Beef Fat: Too dry - Pork Intestines: Flavorless - Shrimp: Cold and wet - Surf Clam: Decent but watery - Sliced Bread: We only got this at the end with our bill. This was a great place for a date night to try something new or for a good time with a group. The food was delicious and very flavorful. It tastes very similar to the street carts of meat skewer but in a nicer, calm environment. The restaurant does not rush you out and you can sit there and have a good time with your friends, drinking and eating. A must try is the seafood! The scallop was super flavorful with garlic and vermicelli. The oyster was juicy and did not taste fishy. Tasted quite fresh. The tiger shrimp was huge and not over cooked. Done quite well. This restaurant is my definition of a modernize Chinese tapas. The environment is comforting with cozy bench seating and soft music in the background where you can have a decent conversation. Service was great as our hostess explained the quality of the food we will be receiving and asked about dietary restrictions. If you are looking for a spot to have a few drinks and small bites in flushing, this is the place. Of course, for those looking for a larger meal, they have that option as well. We ordered golden beef stew (Mala Tang) and skewers for 5 of us. The meat skewers taste a little light and bland at first but the more you eat it, the more tasteful it gets. Surprisingly, the potato skewers and okra were our favourites. The golden beef stew tasted amazing and very soothing with the vermicelli. We enjoyed all of it with a pitcher of Sapporo beer. This was my first time here last night and was unimpressed with the service. I felt like my group was ignored the entire time. No staff came to check on us and ask how everything was. The staff totally forgot about us. We could have walked out on the bill and the staff would not have noticed. I also did not like that the food was not hot when it came out. As I walked in, I had really high hopes for this restaurant as a possible late night spot to grab some good eats and have a drink. Unfortunately, it was a mixed bag of good and bad, so the jury is still out. Let's start with the ambience because the interior design was amazing. The restaurant has an inviting feel, with charming touches everywhere. The theme is somewhat like an old school restaurant/bar in movies from the days of Chinese dynasties. Technically, translating the name directly, it should say "small bar from the past" or "old school bar." Honestly, it feels that way with a bit of modern influences. First of all, there is a small snack station for guests to grab some nicknacks while waiting for their food. In addition, all the booths had adorable Chinese themed pillows for your back, which was delightful. Another cool idea was the hanging candlelight on top of the tables, which can be swapped out to hang a tea pot of ice water. Small issue with that is the dripping water from the condensation that lands on the table while eating. They also provide wooden dice cups for people to play traditional Chinese drinking games at the tables. Furthermore, there is live music for dinners on the weekends. As for the food, we were unfortunately not as impressed. Their signature beef belly skewers were flavorful, but quite tough. Lamb skewers were better, but still nothing special. Btw, though the prices looked reasonable, the meat on the skewers were absolutely tiny, which may be why they all feel overcooked. I included a picture to compare the skewer versus my finger. Honestly, I rather go to the street carts. Maybe the best item of the meal was their Grilled Oyster, though pricey at $5, I would get that again with their delicious sauce. The Grilled Scallop was slightly overcooked, but flavor was no bad. Another decent dish we ordered was the Butter Preserved Egg, which is a vinegary century egg dish that was cooked on a hot pan with spices, scallion, cilantro, and egg. I really prefer my century egg served cold, but this was not bad, however definitely not worth the price either. I ate it with the Naan, which was just okay and boring on its own. The Grilled Egg Crepe is actually a poor translation. It is a wide rolled up cold noodle, stuffed with hot dog, scallion and cilantro, then pan fried with egg on the outside. The sauce was slightly spicy, sour and sweet. This was honestly terrible because the noodle was beyond hard and chewy. I gave up trying to eat it. Service-wise, the waiter we had was friendly, though sometimes absent. However, he couldn't answer many of the questions I had asked. Clearly they are new and I hope this issue gets resolved soon. Like I said, this was such a disappointment because I would come back here with friends in a heartbeat if they can improve the quality of the food.
