I came here with my friend who is from Argentina . He had told me this was the best around and it did not disappoint. Had to wait about 35 minutes for a table on Saturday night but it was well worth the wait. The staff was great!!! The food and Sangria were awesome. So badly wanted the Flan but after the grilled meat platter I could not eat anything more. I loved the Blood sausage which was some of the best I've ever had. To beging with I loved the free appetizer you get, it's provolone cheeese with a cold cut , I think it was salami and drizzeI with a sort of vinagrette (it 's a very nice treat).Then I had the #4 combo , it was cooked to perfection and the chimichurry just made it even better, my friend had the bife the chorizo and it was simply amazing! Let me start by saying I love Argentinian Parrillada. I reached out to the restaurant over yelp and made a reservation. I advised it was my anniversary and we had a stroller and were looking for a 7pm spot. I was advised no problem. On my way to the restaurant I called to let them know I was running about 10 minutes late. They advised they had no reservation for me listed and when I asked if they had a table - they asked how many I said 2 adults and a stroller. They said we dont allow strollers... something that would have been helpful to know by the person who responded for the restaurant over Yelp. In any event we thought maybe depending on the chairs we can use just the car seat - we get there and the place is pretty much empty....seriously. they eventually let us bring in the stroller because the seats couldn't accommodate the car seat. Our server was distracted for the most part even though the place was empty... the meat was ok - some pieces really good otherwise tasted old as if they had been frozen and then thawed too quickly. or end pieces of leftover cuts for the parrillada we order. They also didnt take off the silver skin that was on the cut of skirt steak and grilled it that way making it tough. the worst part of the experience for me was I wanted to order chinchulines but not a whole order. I asked if a half order was possible - waitress said yes- i asked how much and she said half the regular prices which was 18.90. I get my bill and instead of seeing 9.45 they charged me $11 and change, Seriously for a few pieces of intestine with no side dish....and when I asked the waitress she goes Oh sorry...and didnt offer to fix it or adjust. She goes thats what it is. I said i asked before I ordered....and shes like well thats the price. annoying...i tried once and wont be returning. Okay, so my family and I went to this place today and everything was outstanding, the attention was good and everything settled up. Desserts super delicious, tres leches higly recommended. Unfortunately, first and last time here; a waiter gave us back the tip because it was not enough WTF? we gave them 17$ and spend 160$ Super generous but he told us that the minium it had to be 23'50$. My family and I have been coming here for over 30 years and unfortunately their customer service is very poor lately... Food quality has declined a bit like their short ribs, blood sausage and sausage and the waiters haven't been attentive during our meals. Few weeks ago when they reopened I called 30-35 min before closing for pickup order and they told me be aware they close within 30 minutes I said not a problem I'll make it, then he said hold on and proceeded to put me on hold and then hung up. I then called again they picked up and hung up on me. If they didn't want to serve me they can easily say they aren't taking orders. Very disappointed because I've been coming here for family birthdays and celebrations and they don't respect their loyal customers. Visited a couple times in the past few weeks; the second time was the bring more people to really experience this to make sure the first visit wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. Excellently prepared parillada, Argentinian grilled meats, sirloins, flanks, sausages, skirt steak, mouth-watering deliciousness. The service was attentive, friendly, fun and welcoming. Sangria is fantastic! Not watered down, iced, fruit-punch swill served at other places, this Sangria was rich, fruit filled wine and flavorful. I could just have the grilled meat and Sangria for breakfast, lunch and dinner and die in a self-induced protein and Sangria coma. Rough part is finding parking--typical to the area, but it's worth the wait. There is another location nearby run by the father of the host at this location, but I already like this one. This review is just for our attempt to place a takeout order. We called. First a man picks up and we tell him we would like to place an order. He tells us to hold and a full minute goes by before a woman takes the phone. We tell her that we would like to place a take out order. She says ok. Wife tells her she would like to have an order of the short ribs. Lady says ok. Repeats back and says skirt steak. Wife says, no she wants the short ribs. Lady says ok, then repeats again with skirt steak. At this point we're just wondering how anyone ever got their orders right ever. There is obviously a language barrier so we politely asked if someone else could help her and us to make the order. She says ok and tells us to hold again. Another minute goes by before we are hung up on. WTF really? I really wanted to try their food but this phone experience had completely turned us away from it. Update: The owner reached out to me and apologized for what happened. I always really appreciate seeing owners/managers caring about their customers when they have a bad experience. Bumping the review up to 2 stars for now and will give this place another chance in the future. If it all turns out well, I will give it a much more deserving review for the food. The place was empty and for some apparent reason we weren't offered a menu until 10 minutes of just waiting, when we finally got service it took them another 10 minutes for them to bring our beverages and extra 10 minutes for my request of ice. Apparently the waiter texting was more important than anything else that I had to re ask her if I can please have ice. Finally she gave me the ice and was upset about it. The food was ok. The place is a little rough around the edges for me. I didn't realize until halfway through dinner that it is really a butcher with a tiny restaurant attached. Absolutely the worst restaurant I have been to in my entire life. Our waiter apparently went on break without telling replacement awaiter bout in our order. Finally waiter #2 brought appetizer (already cold) and famous Argentine beef entrees, all so incredibly salty as to make them completely inedible (served with mashed potatoes obviously from a box) . Finally left everything and in disgust asked for the check.. Told the waiter yet again about the over-saltiness of the food. He apologized, explained that sometimes the grill is salty (what an imaginative excuse) and that he would leave a message for the manager so that when we come back we should mention it and they would give us a little discount. My family and I were there over the weekend, on a bust Saturday night. The line was loooooooong, we waited for 1 hour before getting a table. We were 4 people and when we got to the table a chair was missing I asked the waiter for a chair, and apparently he went to get one, but he never came back!!! So, after 10 min I had to go get someone to bring a chair to the table. We order a Sangria, which I found was really good, sweet but tasty.. I really liked it. They bring you some bread and butter, which were really good. Also, a little plate with some chorizo and cheese, and this was the best part of what we ate. We order a parrillada for 2, beef ribs, and veal. They were all FULL of fat, it was really gross. Once you thought you had a good piece of meat in your mouth, you start tasting the fat. Very poor meat quality. The parrillada is full of sausages rather than more meat and chorizo, like a good Parrillada Argentina. No wonder this place is cheap. By the end, we order some coffees and desserts. The coffee was good, but the they ran out of desserts and no one came to our table to let us know. I had to ask 15 minutes later if the desserts were coming or not, and that is how I knew because the waitress never came back. Overall, nice try but I will never come back. read more

I'm leaving one star only because the food was decent, not great. I was content with the food, but the waiter and service was terrible. I was with my girlfriend and my goddaughter and her parents. We got water once, no refills, no "how is your food" or " do you need anything else" or "do you want desert". We were ignored the whole time. It was a busy Saturday night, I understand that priorities are on the people already dining, but I don't think that excuses rudeness. This is a traditional Argentine-styled carniceria and restaurant in one. The proprietors are really nice there and will answer all your questions. Their menu reflects alot of grilled meats from the rich ranch/cowboy culture. Cheese and pasta dishes from the Italian influence. Fish from the coastal regions. The meat counter is at the back. The restaurant is in the front. I've never tried the restaurant part but what I can smell from the dishes of patrons is usually amazing. Expat friends drive all the way from Brooklyn to pick up Argentina groceries in this area. They go to El Gauchito's meat counter for Argentine cut steaks, sweetbreads, and sausages. Their meats on the grill are amazingly succulent. They also make fresh pasta, ready to cook meat (ie: milanesa which is a lightly flour dusted and flattened beef or chicken cutlet) and pre-made empanadas (5 for $6) in the usual flavors--beef, chicken, tuna, spinach, cheese and ham, etc.They also sell alfajores (theirs is fresher than C-Town's because they keep theirs in the fridge). When my friends grilled the meat up in their backyard, El Gauchito's steaks are juicy, sweet, and plump--didn't even need additional seasoning aside from salt. My favorite sausage there is their fresh salchicas which are plump, tender, juicy, and sweet. (if you're lucky enough to own an outdoor grill---but it works in an oven as well) If you're adventurous, try the morcilla--blood sausage (very yummy in moderation with lots of tomato salad on the side). As for the empanadas---they're very delicious. When I was in Buenos Aires, three blocks down from my apartment was an Empanada and pizza shop which was an obsession. El Gauchito's empanadas remind me of my little empanada shop in Palermo. Plus they're 6 for $5. I trek out all the way from Spanish Harlem for my South American fix, especially because East Harlem has a rich array of Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Mexican produce but little to none in South American groceries or foods. As a single apartment dweller, I tend to stock up on pre-seasoned meats from El Gauchito. I buy 2 pounds of beef milanesa, a box of assorted empanadas (about 12), a coil of fresh salchica sausage (very thin and long, loopy pork sausages---they come smoked or are made fresh), and morcilla (blood sausage). All this costs me $26 and lasts 1.5-2 weeks. The only additional groceries I need afterwards are for produce, carbs, and starches (veggies, greens, rice, bread). The milanesa is the lazy bachelorette's solution to not wanting to slave in a kitchen or order take out. All you do is toss it onto an oiled pan or into the oven and less than 15-minutes later, you're done. The empanadas are for super lazy days because all you need to do is to reheat them in the toaster oven and you've got food. read more

we wanted some good meat so decided to venture out to a new place to explore. ambiance is fun and festive. crowded and lively for a Sunday night although we didn't have to wait which was nice . the free appetizer they gave was really tasty some smoked meat and cheeses. sangria was also great-really strong with bursts of fruit flavor. we were a bit underwhelmed with our main courses- my skirt steak was chewy and the mixed grill was good but nothing outstanding for the price. the chimmichurri sauce though was on point! read more

Not coming back! I will not recomend this place. My friends took me for my birthday and I was excited because they told me that this place was good. What a disappointment! The food was ok but we got the worst waiter. This waiter from Mexico(because I ask him if he was Argentinian) gave us attitute from the beginning , when we asked for recomendation for appetizers he rudely told me to read the menu. We asked for water 3 times and got it at the end, he never came to ask if everything was ok, at the end they charged us for the birthday piece of cake!!. I have lived in the neighborhood for more than 10 years and never had gone to el gauchito. I went for the first time today expecting greatness since all the reviews I've read have been great. Unfortunately I am disappointed. The food was okay but the service was HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! The waitor was chewing gum and didn't refill our water during the entire lunch. He ignored us for the whole time. Another waitor, who was nicer finally asked if we wanted the water refilled. First time I ever came across this place I'll give it a thumbs up. My friend was raving to come here so we did and we actually were happy because it was definitely worth it. The food speaks for itself we got the meal for two which has 2 beef ribs and 2 skirt steaks. I only eat meat well done but Spanish steaks are mostly chewy.
