Found this little gem by accident. El Fogón is located, in a strip mall across from the Safeway shopping center, in the Ahwatukee foothills. EF is quiet with an inviting atmosphere. Their menu has a lot of options. Nachos, quesadillas, or some street tacos for a mid day snack. They have traditional items like pozole, chile rellenos, lengua and so much more. They have specials for Taco Tuesday and Happy Hour. My daughter and I shared some carne asada tacos and birria (beef) they were excellent. The enchilada had absolutely no garnish, my beans were cold, in which I had to add my own sour cream and the taco was beyond soggy! Rarely do I give a place four stars but the food here is memorable to say the least. The restaurant itself is nothing special, just very casual where you order at the counter and they bring your food to the table. But the food, excellent. It not only looks good but tastes good as well. While a picture shows the look and presentation it can't convey how great it really tastes. While the sauce was a little thinner than most places and the cheese wasn't melted and the chicken wasn't shredded but chunks of white meat it was 4 star. Of the three tacos the shrimp was not my favorite but still way above average. The barbacoa taco was my favorite with the el carbon second. Wow have I been missing out. This little Mexican food spot is within walking distance from my house and I stopped in today for a burrito. Dang was this burrito delicious. It was everything I look for in a burrito, big beautiful and delicious. I loved the flavor of the beans and rice as well as the sliced pieces of chicken that were inside the burrito. The employees were very nice and professional, and the food came out in a timely manner...I took a piece of the burrito home for my wife to try, and her eyes got big when she took a bite...I have a feeling we will both be coming back for the Street Burrito. I'm still giving this place 5 stars but because their taco trio has the best 3 tacos in town and everytime we order them they are fantastic. Especially the Shrimp Governador. But when I stray away from those, we are disappointed. The fish taco lacked flavor. The traditional Enchiladas weren't very good at all. My husband gave them 2.5 out of 5 stars because he didn't like the sauce which was too tomato-ey, the meat lacked seasoning, and he said it had too much cabbage. It is a Fogon conclusion that for good Mexican food eats in the 'Tukee head to El Fogon. They seriously have some legit tacos. We ordered a wide array of several types and left full and happy. I had the fish taco and shrimp taco and tried a bite of the barbacoa. The tacos are double layered with corn tortillas which helps maintaining stability so that the taco doesn't fall apart. On some of the tacos they'll dip the outer tortilla in sauce and then fry it for some extra deliciousness. I enjoyed both of my seafood tacos. The fish was flaky and tender, and the shrimp were plump. The barbacoa was awesome and I'd probably opt to get this next time I'm here. They include some consomé to dip your taco which is a nice touch. The kiddo got a barbacoa taco kids meal which includes a drink, rice, beans, and your choice of protein with the taco. Her taco was also double tortilla'd. I'm trying to avoid my kid being a sugar and soda zombie so I was disappointed that there weren't really any good options for drinks for kids other than sodas, lemonade and Hi-C. At other similar restaurants they've offered milk which I would have opted for. I know that the very fact that I'm getting tacos and dining-in means I'm not getting the healthiest experience regardless but hey, you gotta splurge in some places and be more health conscious in others, ya know? El Fogon was an amazing find in Ahwatukee. The taco shop has other options as well and is located in a strip mall off the new 202 extension. There is a decent amount of dining inside the restaurant, however there are no outside seating areas. The menu has a variety of speciality tacos, along with quesadillas, burritos, and a couple of plated specials. I was blown away by the quality of the food and authentic taste. I had the al pastor quesadilla, and others with me had a variety of tacos which all looked amazing. The flavors were strong, and the food was perfect without being overly cheesy as you can often find with a quesadilla. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the food and the service was very prompt. It was a little confusing with the table-side delivery, however it was a busy time on a Friday night so we have to give some grace. A thousand times over will I gladly cheer and vote for El Fogon! I've seen their name pop up repeatedly in a local Awahtukee FB group for great, affordable eats. Luckily I have some friends in the area who are willing and open to venture deep into the Foothills (Chandler and 17th St) for a good meal. Their menu isn't super long which makes decision-making relatively easy. Unfortunately no patio tables out which would be awesome for our prime weather season. It is counter service - order and they'll bring out your order as it's prepared. Chips and guac/salsa are a nice shared "side". The green salsa is more mild but bigger flavor than the red. This gringa can deal with the heat in both- relatively minor. When I came back for a 2nd dinner by myself within a week (to order the exact same thing as my 1st visit), the nice cashier confirmed that their Tacos Trios plate is the most popular menu item- one Al Carbon, one Gobernador, one Barbacoa. The Gobernador is my #1 pick- big juicy shrimp (never gonna say no to lots of shrimp) and cheese is a match made in heaven. The Al Carbon is dipped and then cooked in red sauce and you get a cup of the red sauce for dipping! The Barbacoa is a little spicy but it's a-ok to deal with some heat. They serve beer and margs (frozen or shaken) to complement an already-perfect meal. As Joyce W says, make it a Nike day and just do it. Drive to the deep Foothills for some of the Valley's best tacos. read more

Hubs and I drove all the way from Gilbert on a weekday afternoon to try their tacos, and let me tell ya, they were worth the drive!
