I was in the mood for a breakfast burrito, and figured a spot with an entire menu of them might be the best option. I was wrong. My short visit here felt like I was in a ghost kitchen. Like yeah, there was seating, but nobody else used it--the only traffic was a new delivery driver popping in every 5 minutes while I waited for my order. The burritos were forgettable--low quality ingredients from the fragile, dry tortillas to the watery salsas. You would be better off just going to a random Mexican drive-thru on your way to the edge of town. Or one of the chain restaurant diners down the street. read more

I came in for lunch and the two people working couldn't look more displease. There was literally no one else there but the man cooking still was annoyed that I was looking at the menu. I felt very rushed. He gave us so much attitude when I ordered I wish would have just left. The food came out quickly, it was already ready as we were paying. The cashier had equally as terrible an attitude. We ordered bottled sodas and she opened them with her filthy hands and left the tops full of onion and cilantro. My birria quesadilla was just ok. My mom got the birria ramen and it was literally the packs of ramen you eat in your dorm dumped into oily broth. I will never go back or recommend this place. I suppose I should have known better when they were so upset to have customers that this would be a terrible(and pricey) experience. read more

I heard good things about this place but I feel like I was lied to. I ordered one (1) order of quesabirria tacos which is to come with two (2) tacos and a cup of consommé (with green salsa on the side) and an order of al pastor (4) tacos, both with cilantro and onions and a fresh lemonade. The best part of my meal was the lemonade. It was not too tart or too sweet. It was very refreshing and I was 100% happy with my choice. But DASSIT. The rest was questionable af. First of all, I was supposed to get TWO quesabirria made with corn tortillas and what I got was ONE taco that was cut in half AND THE CHEESE WASNT EVEN MELTED. Like, individual shreds of cheese were stuck together to indicate that warmth had surrounded the taco at one point in time but that was questionable. Not only was the consommé cold, it was weakkkk with four k's. It tasted like a watery Lipton soup with sliced green onions in it. Tasty Tacos Been here a few times but until today I have never written a review. All I can say is, if you like tacos, El Jefe Tacos not disappointed. I ordered the quesabirria. The tortilla was crispy and soft at the same time, the meat was flavorful and plenty. One of the better Tacos I've had in a while. My sister had they fish tacos Which are battered and fried upon order. I can't wait to try other menu items on my next visit. The staff, specifically the cook who was running the stove, was rude from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. I ordered a bacon cheddar omelet breakfast burrito....the cook was acting a little strange in the back and taking a while to cook our meal. (Also ordered 2 tacos). The cashier confirmed our order, we tipped them and were on our way. We get home and I go to take a bite of my bacon cheddar omelet breakfast burrito and it looks a bit soggy and oily....but I still give it a shot. It tastes just like a soggy tortilla with what I think is just fat and the disregarded ingredients the chef intended to throw away. I thought the eggs may have been just further down toward the bottom of the burrito. I took one more bite and then realized that the cook intentionally gave me an entire greasy tortilla filled with all of the end trails of the bacon and scrap pieces they were intending to disregard because they were just not edible nor safe to be consumed. I give this place a 2 for the pastor that came in the fries. If you like ballpark food or movie theatre food or really cheap Mexican fast food you will like this restaurant (?). We ordered their large nachos with carne asada. I requested all avocado products to be packaged separately because I'm deathly allergic to avocados but my husband loves them. To use the word "nachos" to describe what was in the box is an insult to nachos. There were chips thrown in a small sized pizza type box with asada thrown in.....nothing more. I will include a photo of the sides which were meager and one of them completely unidentifiable. We also ordered fries with pastor. The pastor was decent but the fries were limp and soggy with grease. We ordered, picked up and were home within 10 minutes of picking up the order so the food and the cheese soup that was the topping for the nachos should have at least been warm. Not the case. Extremely disappointed to spend good money leave a 30% tip for food that is so inferior. To call this Mexican food is disrespectful to Mexican food. read more

Came here for lunch. Was greeted very nicely as I walked in. Took a look around. Very clean restaurant. Plenty of tables to sit at. Very accessible menu with lots of variety and choices. I decided on the Jefe small nachos and I'm glad I did because those filled me up! They serve Coca Cola products and that's a win for me since I love Coke Zero. I chose a good time to eat there since it wasn't that busy but once I got my food here came the lunch rush. These gentlemen that work here work very hard and are very friendly. We have been going to El Jefe Tacos since they opened and enjoyed their tacos. But these last two visits have been very disappointing. This visits our taco were so greasy I had to put them on a paper towel. The visit prior to this, the rice was hard and very undercooked. I've noticed the quality of food isn't the greatest when the older gentleman cook is not there, coincidence, not sure? I don't think we'll be going back which is a bummer since I love their El pastor. read more

I came back to try the fish taco and side of rice, was not disappointed. The small Jefe nachos are some of the best I've ever had and the fish taco is top tier, probably the best you'll find in Ahwatukee. The rice was good but a little salty for my liking, still delicious! read more

My family and I get tacos here pretty close to every week. I haven't had a bad item yet and I've tried all the tacos.

This was my first time experiencing Birria tacos and OMG jefe did not disappoint! The consome is extremely flavorful and you can tell that there was love put into it. The meat itself was so tender and the tacos came filled to the brim with meat and cheese. Being that I am a takeout queen, I am such a stickler for packaging - and my tacos arrived perfectly, including the consome (with foil so no spills) was packed away into this cute little bento box/lunch box style box. I ordered these yesterday and they are so damn good I ordered them again today - you know, for science just to ensure the tacos hit the same. I also purchased a churro - I ate it so quickly I forgot to take a pic. But I would say that this is the closest to a Disneyland/ Disney World churro you are going to get outside of the parks. For those that know, know. But the churro was also super tasty. Crispy on the outside airy on the inside Run, don't walk to get these! So bomb and so worth it! The Tacos Birria were pretty good, but the consommé was very oily, almost unstirred. The chips were very good, and while the red salsa provided was good, the amount provided was sparse for the price of this bag of chips. The Jarritos sodas were cold and they had a good selection. read more
