This was tough for me - my coworker and i were trading best taco spots and she named Tacos Calafia. I mean i strongly stand by my go-tos (Tacos Chiwas, Taquitos Jalisco) but Tacos Calafia is so close to my house so i caved and said, FINE, i'll check it out. Alright, so i've made my peace with myself and that i can have multiple favorites - Tacos Calafia has been added to my list of favorite taco spots in Phoenix. My go-to is their carne asada taco and al pastor taco. If i'm hungry, it's an al pastor burrito. Their salsa bar is bomb. And their spicy salsa, is legitimately spicy. Like i love it but try it at your own risk. Grilled onions and peppers aren't always sitting out with the salsas but you can always ask for it when you collect your order from the counter and they don't disappoint. The peppers are so spicy though (or i'm a wimp, i can admit to that) so again, proceed with caution. And did i mention the guac? It's not an extra cost and is at the salad bar! It's a little smoother than guac i'm used to, but so tasty - i always get a healthy scoop, haha. read more

I had been going to tacos Calafia for years before I moved away. Just so happened I was in town and in the area so I decided to see how it's holding up, they've expanded to more locations since, which doesn't always mean the other locations will be good. I was so happy when I discovered that Calafia has held its standard after all these years. The food came out quickly, the staff was friendly and took my order at the front area. On a nice day there's a patio you can sit on, but I chose indoors this time. No taco joint is complete without the salsa bar, which I opted for onions and cilantro, lime and their spiciest salsa. I ordered two Al pastor tacos and a carne asada. The pastor was just how I remembered it. It was sweet and savory with the adobo shining through. The carne asada was tender, and the marinade was full of flavor. The salsa was spicy too but not in a burning way, it went well with all the tacos. The corn tortillas are also superior. Dropped in here on a whim as we didn't want to wait the estimated 45mins at another restaurant across the street. This was my first time here and it's quite like some other taco spots around where you get your base burrito/taco with meat and tortilla and add extras at the salsa bar. The space inside is quite large...not sure if they host anything but there's plenty of space for more than just the dozen tables they have. There's a fun mural, a moss wall adorned with a neon sign, and some other kitschy decor. I ordered two al pastor tacos and a pollo taco. The torillas were good and slightly browned but still had enough flex to not crumble apart. The al pastor was good...flavor was muted a little vs the other recent places I've been. My son got a quesadilla and it was good sized. My wife went for the dirty nachos and enjoyed them. The 3 salsas I tried from the salsa bar were ok...mostly just hot sauce and not 'salsa'. When I ordered a side of chips and salsa I expected a separate container of salsa and not just receive chips and have the guy point at the salsa bar. Besides the salsa bar, the guys at the counter offered me some grilled jalapenos and onions...yum! Couldn't eat too much of these but it gave my food a good punch. The prices were on par with other similar Tijuana-style taco places. I'm not going out of my way to eat here, but if I'm in the area and looking for a quick bite I'd drop in again. Got food here late one night! They unfortunately ran out of some meats so I ended up getting some cabeza vampiros. The meat was really tender and flavorful! The amount of meat on each one was pretty fair too! The salsa bar had a bunch of guac but no pico :( the guac wasnt good....but it was pretty much unlimited haha. Service: average (nothing to complain about) This place is one of my favorite taco restaurant chain but it's definitely a drastic change since they open one in Peoria. The food here is still alright even though a lot of the times I come, their tacos tend to be a little bit on the saltier side. And even though their prices have gone up, the portion of the meat they give in their taco seems to be about the same which is great. Not real Mexican cheese or anything you'd like to eat. Skip them. They have consume- beef broth soup...its literally just salty beef flavored broth in a cup- skip this. Have heard many good things about this spot in Tukee from those who have lived in the area much longer than me. Curiosity and being very hungry after an intense workout had me driving to check them out recently. Prices are little high, but they seem to be very generous with their meats- case in point needing a spoon for all the meats that fell off my tacos. It would be nice if they had a few way-faring direction signs - where to order, pickup etc. The menu is hung from the ceiling and they have your standard assortment of menu items for a taco shop. They appear to have some daily/weekly specials as well (happy hour, taco Tuesday, etc). AND - you can buy their meats por la Libra. I was very impressed with their cabeza! Califa has a great taco bar. The green "medium" salsa is a little spicy for this gringa, regardless has a lot of flavor. Based on that alone, I probably wouldn't go for the other salsa. OK, I guess I have been under a rock. My friends invited me to lunch today to this location of this taco restaurant. I walk in and it's just a big open space with chairs and a little bar of salsa and guacamole and you can see the drink fountain and all that good stuff has an order at the counter and sit down and wait for your food situation. I bought so much food chips and guac a drink two tacos and frijoles $16 with tip. I am not kidding. lol Wish I would have gotten two of those, but I did get the chicken and it was all chopped up and it was absolutely delicious. I put several of the very spicy salsa and onion cilantro all the good stuff that was at the bar on top. We had the guacamole and chips and the frijoles. The frijoles were seasoned so good. Found this place while I was out and running errands. It had a very interesting drink called "jamaicarrita", it is a jamaica margarita. For those not familiar with the Spanish word, it is hibiscus water. We ordered a taco family pack and we had carne asada and al pastor. It comes with some quesadillas and to top it off we had some nachos. Everything was very good and quick. They had some music going and the employees were having a good time. A very interesting thing I noticed: they have keto tacos. This means the taco shell is cheese instead of a tortilla. So if anybody needs keto friendly food, you can have those. read more

I've heard good things so stopped by when I was nearby. The process is a little confusing. When you walk in, straight ahead is the kitchen and pickup area. If you look around, there's a cashier area on the left to order, but no menus. We were directed to the wall behind us (so out of sight when you walk in) for the menu. We ordered carne asada tacos on flour. These came with a TON of meat, which I'm guessing is the reason for so many good reviews. People love quantity! The meat wasn't very exciting and had some gristle. Then you top it at the salsa bar, where there is cilantro, onion, lime, radish, 'guacamole', and three salsas. We also ordered chips and guacamole, which gets you a bag of chips and a bigger cup for the salsa bar. The three salsas are a green tomatillo labeled as medium, a red salsa labeled as medium, and a red salsa labeled as hot. I don't care for tomatillo salsas generally so no surprise that I wasn't excited by this one. The medium red was very bland. The hot red was that kind of sauce that is loaded with bitter chile powder. I added salt to the medium and went with that. The guacamole tastes so fresh, but has nothing else in it. Literally. I think you are supposed to add salsa and cilantro and onion and mix it up. I did this a little bit. My tacos, once dressed, were fine, but this definitely isn't making my top tacos list. read more

Al pastor was a bit chewy and over salted, cabeza was not freshly made. For the price the quality is not there. They are not in the same universe as Taco boys or Ta- Carbone, even backyard taco. They are closer to Taco Bell. Service was good but I'm not sure why tipping is needed as I had to pick up my food, refill my own drink and throw away my own trash. This location is always empty, definitely not a vibe. This is my honest review and this taco place has gone downhill. Sorry, but do better. I do not recommend any locations. I put onion, cilantro and green salsa on them and the flavor was on point. The green salsa was a bit spicy and the chopped onions and cilantro were all fresh. My boyfriend ordered a carne asada burrito. This place would have gotten 5 stars if his burrito wasn't so small. It was pretty disappointing given he took one of my tacos because of it.
