i enjoy the food but hate the lack of transparency with pricing. my server charged me an extra dollar for a chicken leg when she had told me the chicken lunch special was $6. i wouldn't have minded paying $7 if she had told me that the leg cost extra and i had the money for it. the tip i wanted to leave went to paying for the meal that cost more than she had said. would've given 5 stars if she had just been transparent. read more

I have really amazing Dominican food closer to me on Broadway but my friend and me wanted to try a new place and we were heading towards Cobble Hill so El Cofre was the place. Usually I try to order delivery over the phone, but it's ALWAYS so loud on their end that the person says they can't hear me. Tonight I called, couldn't be heard, called back & got as far as address & phone number then they guy says, "I can't hear you" I have the ability to make my voice quite loud & he said to me "it's your phone, it's your problem!" So I made it his problem, hung up & placed my order else where. If they can't move the phone into a back room where it's quieter maybe they could join the 21st Century & get GrubHub or other online order service. Great little place that has some damn good Dominican food! You cant go wrong with the chicharron de pollo - very good and tasty! Oh and its super inexpensive...my friend and I both ate and were plenty full for like 10 bucks each. Love, Love, Love this place. Growing up in New York people thought I was Puerto Rican as a child but as a grew up people swore I was Dominican. The first time I came into this restaurant I was treated like family. All of the staff thought I was Dominican and I could get whatever I wanted. I live right around the corner from this place, and it's got the very delicious and homey food. It was especially great in the winter! Some of the employees there don't speak very good English, but you can just point and what you want--and everything they have is good, so you can't really go wrong! My friend and I stumbled in here one night for dinner. We got one plate for $13, with a coice of one meat and two sides. We got the marinated chicken, yellow rice and mashed potatoes. We also tried the tamales which are gluten free and pinto beans in sauce. Soup is great too. Bad service. Period. Didn't even had the chance to order at all. Waited 20+ minutes, watching six employees talking among themselves in the counter. One acknowledge us, told the waitress to serve us, but she was busy chatting with the others. We just stood up, thank them for the service they did not even tried to provide us. And guess what, there was only one table in the whole place in a Friday night. That said it all. If you want to try that place, hopefully you have nowhere to go. Keep waiting. read more

This is not a negative review based on their food. I've been in there a bunch of times. Their food is solid. Nothing out of this world. Very basic, solid, Latino-Caribbean food. This review is solely based on their service (attitude) and extreme lack of transparency. I've been charged different prices for the same items there at different times. There are NO prices anywhere. I read where someone on here said that the waitress changed the price. That's what they do in there!! Then have attitude when you question them about it. I literally saw the waitress ask the guy how much an order of rice was, and he shrugged his shoulders and threw out a price and made that look on his face like, "Hell if I know". I'm not going there anymore and waiting til another Latino-caribbean place opens in the neighborhood. I'm Latino and hate giving the negative review but they suck. You can't beat the prices at El Cofre. My boyfriend and I dine-in there about once a month. Portions are large--enough for leftovers. I usually get the roast pork (pernil), rice and beans, and fresh squeezed lemonade. The service usually leaves something to be desired. The waitstaff is not particularly attentive and sometimes forgets part of an order. This may be because much of El Cofre's business seems to be take-out. El Cofre also offers lunch specials $5 or $6, featuring similarly large portions. Although service isn't that great, for the taste and prices El Cofre is hard to beat. read more

So I ordered the shrimp mofongo cause I haven't had mofongo in years and had been craving for it. The sauce was great. The shrimp was overlooked and the mongo go was chunky and dry. The mofongo could have been sweeter. And I would have liked it better if it was less chunky and more creamy. We get take out here at least once per month, if not more. I'm a fan of the baked chicken and stewed chicken while my husband likes the pork and the shrimp salad (cold salad). We sometimes order fish or oxtail and everything is good. We've never eaten inside the restaurant, always take out, but we've seen lots of repeat customers sitting when we go in. The portions are pretty big. We split a half chicken between the two of us along with the yellow rice and beans. There is always 3-4 servings of rice and 2+ servings of beans...all for $9. read more

The food is good here, but they overcharge you one day depending on what female is serving you, and then charge right the next day, once again depending on who is serving. Then say o its because its not the lunch special, when I and my family have been there so much we know the right prices. Then their servings are very little depending on who is serving, basically just be mindful of being over charged with less food than others, this place favors it's customers, and even tho the food is good its not all that great to be over charged with less portions, thats all. read more

El Cofre is one of the reasons I live in Clinton Hill. I go here at least once a week to get take out rice and beans. The red beans are delicious. I have yet to find a place that does beans better. On occasion I get the chicken as well which is really good and sooo cheap. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about but the staff is really friendly even though there is a bit of a language divide. (I speak no Spanish.) read more

The lady behind the counter was slightly annoying as I had to repeat the order 3 times, not because she didn't understand but because she was yapping with her friends... you know what? I am soooo over it. I got a HUGE portion of really good food (seriously enough for lunch and dinner) for 6 bux. OK the fish was just a bit dry but hey that's why we make beer. I've been ordering from here for years and know their prices. The sales girl tried to rip me off by charging me $11.00 for oxtails without the rice and beans. The oxtail dinner with everything, rice, beans and/or plantain is $8.99. They are just naming any price and hope you don't ask questions. She tried to play for a sucker. And the girl kept calling me honey like she could sweet talk me into falling for her stupid price. Larger portions when you order the family meal or dine in. There should be an option /substitute for the soda. There's an either take this or take that when it comes to the side order; salad or a few plantains--like six pieces. The food can be tasty as long as it is NOT out of a can like the beans, beef stew, & cookie cutter carrots. No two carrots are cut exactly alike unless they are professionaly cut and canned. God only knows what else sat under a churning old can opener and dumped into a large pot and splashe with the salt and pepper. The salt and pepper cookers know exaztly what i mean.... If you don't know the taste of authentic spanish food--and not food where a sprig of cilantro is just thrown in--you're in trouble. On top of that, charging extra for no reason... (whole chicken, silver plate of rice, 8 oz. cups of beans, the either or the or, $26.00) ridiculous, I guess the so-called NO delivery charge is added in. The consumer shouldn't be overly charged because of physical upgrades. The lighting is horrible. The lights are not cozy romantic dim; they are I can't pay this damm bill dim. Oh, the attuide (over the phone) is horrible. Sorry, be go back to the way you once were, or hire an authentic spanish cook. read more

This is the worst place ever!!! Service sucks!!! Don't try to call an order in for pickup. The airheads working as severs answer the phone only to place you on hold and forget they have someone holding. Really. It took me 15 mins to walk there and still on hold. The food... I guess since the non Hispanics are eating their food, and know no better it's fine. But half cooked roast pork is not fine. Someone someday soon will have a serious case of samonila. I live in the neighborhood and have tried their food about 4 or 5 times. I have yet to be disappointed. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. Depending on who served me, the portion size would vary slightly. It's probably best to go early because the last time I went to El Cofre, I picked up food right after work (around 4:30pm) and they had already run out of rice and beans. =( read more

Except for the rice and beans, I was disappointed. I ordered the pernil and waited forever for it to be sliced back in the kitchen. I also got an order of stewed chicken which tasted like it had been stewed in water. Completely flavorless. The order of pernil consisted of 90% skin and fat, with very little meat.
