This rating is probably closer to a 4.5 for me. Homestyle Dominican restaurant, what a nice find in Prospect Heights. They serving traditional eats and no frills. Went on a Friday with no reservations. They were super kind and fast with service. I came in hungry and order a ton - I had the tostone rellenos and ensalado del puerto. They hit! The tostone was creative, elegant and best bite of the evening. The salad had so much veggies and was very fresh the dressing it comes with is vibrant and lime-y. Great start to a meal. I had Churrasco which came with yellow rice and black beans. It was incredible, and I always get a tad scared with skirt steaks being overcooked but it was the perfect medium with grilled marks. The chimichurri was great too. I am nit-picking here but a little more salt and pepper on everything would of been great. Don't come with out having the sangria, they pack a punch! read more

Came in on a Wednesday evening when it was moderately busy. I sat at the bar and ordered a Beef and cheese empanada and the Bistec y queso sandwich. Both were so good! The steak in the sandwich was so flavorful, and the empanada was also delicious. The empanada paired well with the green sauce it came with, and the waiter who delivered the empanada asked if I would like some hot sauce too. I could not pick a favorite between the two things I got. The guy working the high tops was very nice and was the one who recommended the sandwich to me. During a business weekend in NYC and impromptu stop along Washington Avenue before First Saturdays at Brooklyn Museum, me and my peeps received recommendations to stop at PV .... we were not disappointed. Warm welcome. We chose to sit at the bar and both enjoyed expected facorites carne asada and a pollo con arroz renditions. The rice waa heavenly and the hot sauce should be tried with everything. Everytime I go here, I feel a sense of relief. I went on a Wednesday, but absolutely no wait or fuss and quickly serviced. There was about 4 people in the restaurant which increased to 12 by the time I left, but the volume and calmness remained the same so I barely even noticed. The host was chipper, but new and the waiter was older, didn't say much but offered us suggestions and was not pushy. Now the thing that makes it great is the ambiance- warm yellow lighting, wood material and a huge wood island. We sat near the window/ door but didn't feel a draft and the real plants were a nice touch. Music is at a decent volume where I can definitely hear my date but noticed a reggae and reggaeton song. Food was yummy. First they had authentic passionfruit juice (tart flavor ) and the sangria cocktail had no complaints. Also, the sKirtsteak / chicken entrees were flavorful and the perfect portion Sizes. I still opted for the coconut flan/hot chocolate For dessert. I wish they came out together and they were ok - not too sweet but I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to get them again. The place stayed relatively busy throughout the evening, but there was never a wait for a table. For food, we got: - Pernil: honestly the pork was a little bit dry, but my friend seemed to enjoy it. - Chicken mofongo: I really enjoyed this! Definitely also very filling, loved the sauce that came with it. - Yucca fries: very tasty and filling, served with a side of garlic sauce (that was not nearly enough given how delicious it was). We stopped here by chance on Friday afternoon for lunch and were seated straight away. We started off with a beer and a berry sangria (very tasty, highly recommend). We ordered the Picadera to start which was a nice selection of items. We then took advantage of their lunch specials (such great value) and ordered the Pollo Al Horno and the Carne Guisada. Both were tasty but the Carne Guisada was the stand out, so delicious and flavorful. The service was great as well, food came out quickly but we never felt rushed. Oh my goodness what a good meal. I picked up Pastelon and Pasteles en Hoja with yellow rice on New Year's Eve. I have to tell you as someone who grew up with my mom and aunt making these during the holidays I was missing it and this place satisfied me so much. Great food. The pasteles were the perfect version I remember from childhood. The Pastelon was amazing, a favorite dish of mine, with it being slightly different than the version I grew up with, this was more cheesy but no complaints. I absolutely loved it. Quality food at a good price point. This is such a gem in the neighborhood and it deserves more love. I came in for their lunch special and it did not disappoint. I mean, where in 2024 can you get a meat-forward entree and a side for $9? I opted for the pernil, which was so tender and full of flavor. You can tell this is roasted to perfection. For my side, I went with maduros because I just can't get enough of sweet plantains. These weren't overly sweet or overly fried, just a kiss! I also loved the homemade hot sauce they provided. I did also add on a cheese empanada (3.50) and this was the perfect little creamy dairy pocket for me. Again, loved the dipping sauce this came with. This meal was the perfect portion for lunch, very filling. The interior is cute and casual. A place that seems perfect for both dinner or lunch. The food here is so flavorful. The waiter I think may also be the owner and he is always friendly. It is a relatively small neighborhood spot but nice for lunch or a casual dinner. I do wish they served rice with all of their meals since it's smaller portions. You could swap the yuca for the rice if you ask but rice is usually standard especially given the cost. read more

This is a review for delivery through Uber eats. I had a late night craving for Dominican food. This one popped up in my search with good review. I took my chance and ordered. I am glad that I did. Phenomenal. Just phenomenal. My husband and I ordered the moro, rotisserie chicken, platano maduro, tostones, oxtail, white rice and beans, and tres leches cake for dessert. Everything single item was splendid. The moro portion is so large that we're still having leftovers 2 days later. My toddler LOVES it, and is requesting "arroz" every day now (will need to learn to make this...). The pastelitos are so good too! They taste very authentic and true to Dominican roots. We ordered and they delivered all the way to Bay Ridge (which is amazing in and of itself) but it was SO good we want to venture out and make the hike over to Bushwick to check them out in person. Lots of the reviews mention how friendly the service is and that just makes this an all around 5 star restaurant for me. Had a fantastic and tasty meal last night at this little neighborhood gem. Cozy little Dominican place that's at the corner of Dean Street and Grand Ave. Attentive service and we started with some seafood croquettes served on a bed of greens. The home-made hot sauce was a fantastic addition. Then moved on to pork rib stew (costilla guisado) with a side of moro (dirty rice and beans) and my wife had the garlic shrimp in white wine sauce. Had this on my foodie list for a while, and decided to pop in with my daughter and her bestie. We walked in and loved the vintage decor. Not what I was expecting at all. As a Dominican, I am always hesitant to try Dominican food from restaurants, as they tend to over season their food. That wasnt the case here. We ordered oxtail and maduro empanadas to start. The crust was flakey and the maduros were a hit. My only advice is to season the oxtail a bit more, as you could barely taste it in the pastry. Maybe add a weeee bit of kick? My sancocho was perfect on a cloudy cold April day. It was smooth, had plenty of Viandas (root veggies) and pork ribs. I ordered mine with a side of white rice and avocado as is tradition. My daughter ordered the Completo Sandwich. She loved but would have preferred it was on the same bread used on the Bistec Sandwich (which her friend ordered) and pressed. Wasnt a huge fan of the Dulce de Coco. It wasnt bad, but it wasnt the texture I was expecting when compared to traditional Dulce de Coco I have had. Fully vaccinated, my husband and I decided to try outdoor dining for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Lured by the lovely outdoor seating area with tables appropriately spread apart at Puerto Viejo, we enjoyed the chicken guisado lunch special ($9, plus $1 for maduros) and the mofongo with pork ($13). While the chicken guisado stew was quite delectable, it only came with three paltry pieces of chicken and not quite enough black beans or stew to accompany the rice. However, the mofongo was amazing. The soup paired superbly well with the mofongo, adding richness in flavor. So glad we ordered this star of a dish. Altogether, the Dominican food was well-spiced and tasty, though not particularly large in portions. I left still a bit hungry. The service was friendly and brisk. This place was recommended to me by my friend. I was looking for a Spanish spot to take my dad out for his birthday. The place is a hidden gem right in the heart of Brooklyn. The restaurant is small, not much seating. If you are going to try this spot with a large group of people, I would recommend calling for reservations. Everything on the menu sounded good. We ordered empanada, codfish fritters, as starters. Empanadas were nice and flavorful, and so were the codfish fritters. For our main entrees, we ordered the pernil, which was super juicy and well seasoned. The Pollo guisado was super tender, and meat was falling off the bones. The whole red snapper was delicious. The churrasco steak was super flavorful and tender. The mofongo with shrimp was delicious, especially the sauce it comes with. The red sangria was delicious and strong. For desserts, we couldn't decide, so we ordered the flan, tres Leche and the dulce de coco. The flan and tres Leche was my favorite. Tres Leche was nice and moist. Flan literally dissolved in your mouth. I will definitely recommend Puerto Viejo. It's good to have a real authentic dominican restaurant in Brooklyn. Great vibes and staff at this restaurant. My friend brought me here on a Saturday evening around 7pm hoping to snag one of their outdoor tables, but it would've been a 45min wait, so we ended up sitting inside. I was hesitant, but it seemed like most people wore their masks aside from eating so it made me feel better. As for the food, we ordered Chicken Empanadas, Tostones, and Yuca Frita for appetizers, and Pollo Guisado and Carne Guisada for main dishes. This was my first time having Dominican food and it did not disappoint. Everything was super flavorful and the textures were perfect. Although grubhub tries its best to ruin businesses this place did a great job getting us hot food. After an hour past the delivery window we suspected the food would have to be warmed up but the food was a perfect temperature and nothing was dried out. The oxtail with maduro empanada was super creative and perfectly executed. The sancocho was yummy and perfectly salted, but the hen was a bit too tough and the platano chunks were very hard. The beans (red) were a bit sweet for my taste so I added a smidge of the soup and that seemed to balance it out. Once fixed the beans were drenched on yellow rice and devoured with the succulent pernil. Overall although super pricey for what's offered (nothing you can't get at any cheaper establishments) and the portions can be a tad on the small side, at times, it is worth venturing to or waiting a couple of hours for because the flavor is always on point. read more

I've gotten takeout twice here so the review is on takeout only, not dine in. One experience was a knock of the park fantastic one, the other was just okay, so I think I can safely call it a four. The knock out of the park meal was the Pastelón de Carne - just, wow!! I had never had this dish before and it was soooo tasty and well made. It is made of mashed plantains with beef in the middle and cheese on top and frankly I don't know what more you could even ask for. It was excellent. The second time I got an empanada - the one of plantains and oxtail, and it was very tasty too. I'd definitely give it a solid 4/5. Where the food got average to just ok was the mofongo - and tbh I think it's more a matter that it didn't carry out well than it not being good. By the time I got it home (about .5 miles from the restaurant) it was just HARD. Also, the app quoted it would be ready by 7:05 at the earliest - I showed up at 6:50 and it had already been sitting there for it seems like a while. So the app misquoted me, plus the carry out time, and it was just hard and not good by the time I was home. I think if it was hot and fresh I could have liked it more. Lastly, I got the Tisana Fría drink and it really didn't pack the flavor I was expecting. I'd probably try another drink next time. I hope this review doesn't come off negative because I don't mean it to - I LOVED the pastelón. Loved. Not your average Dominican restaurant from the hood, however the flavors are as abuelita as it gets! Stopped in on a rainy Saturday before prime dinner time (5pm), and seating was quick. The hot buffet was available but we ordered from the menu to truly taste the flavors. The arrival of the food was slow even though the restaurant was not at full capacity, they want you to savor every morsel. When he brought out this tres leches cake, I didn't even have to taste it to know that I was gonna love love love it! I could sense the love that was baked into this slice of cake. I could feel it. It sounds dramatic, but it's REAL. There was a layer of milk at the bottom of the bowl, allowing the cake to continue to soak. I bit into it, and drifted into the heavens. It was extremely lite. Rich, yet lite. Moist. Decadent. Loving. Scrumptious Dominican tres leche cake. It truly was the best I've ever had. After eating, I saw the owner. I recognized her from IG. But also a place that had yuca fritas and empanadas... and I came across this place when researching for a trip I planned to NY.
