Was craving Mexican food and wanted to try a new spot. This place came up on Google as not too far so took the 20 minute drive. I'm writing this review in Feb. The heart of winter. I walked in and it was freezing. No heat on whatsoever. Thought that was really odd considering they have tables for dine in. They had a space heater but it was off. Service was good. Food was meh. Honestly. I ordered carne asada tacos that looked really good but lacked flavor and didn't taste fresh. My side of rice and beans looked like cat food. I'm not joking. I LOVE rice and beans but this was awful. I wouldn't be surprised if it was just canned schlop thrown into a bowl. Our chip basket was cold. First time getting chips and salsa and the chips weren't warm. Some of them weren't even cooked. No ice/cups for the soft drinks was a big miss and oh, the bathroom is in the kitchen. I will add, the prices were great and everyone was friendly. Seems like a popular take out place but definitely not for me. I think with some small adjustments this place can improve. read more

This is a good place to get diarrhea. Like some people mentioned before, we went to this place because of the raving reviews on yelp. People who said it had best food should try other Mexican restaurants. The food sucked. Everything comes from can or box. Canned salsa, canned beans, El Paso taco shells and so on. Everything tastes bland. They don't serve any utensils. You eat everything by hand. We each ordered a coke but they only gave one (small) bottle of coke between the two of us. We shared nachos which were greasy and soggy (gross), and tacos which were meh. I laughed when I realized that they were serving El Paso taco shells in their tacos because the whole concept of "authentic" was lost on me. Needless to say, that we both had diarrhea after eating at this joint. At least it gave us a (unsolicited) good cleanse of bowel. NOT GOING BACK for sure!!! read more

Read the reviews before coming here. It was really like it was on the reviews, all good. Place is small, about 6 tables all together, most guests seemed to have called ahead and ordered to go. Place is busy and definitely happening. Menu was not too big, however it did have your favorites: burritos, tacos, quesadillas, sopes... I did order the 4 tacos for 7.50. 2 steak, one carnitas and one adobada. Tacos came normal size, not too filled with meat, but had enough. The steak were good, but the carnitas was very good. Good flavors on the carnitas. Was very impressed. The adobada was my least favorite. Something about the taste that was overpowering and you didn't know what was going on in your mouth. Did order a side of beans and rice, and they were good. Was not offered chips while I waited, did notice tables around me did get offered them. Not sure if you purchase separate, but thought that was odd. Overall place is good. Would def come back and try other things on the menu. read more

Came for lunch on a Saturday because Cinco de Mayo was super packed. Surprisingly, there's parking in the back. It's got a few tables, and a small counter, but it's mostly a take out joint. The people who run El Azteca speak English well, so they won't mess up your order. They have the standard Mexican foods, like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, etc., in legit form. I ordered a pastor taco and a cod burrito, after clarifying that the fish would be fried. They gave us some complimentary chips and salsa while we waited for our food. The tacos are cheaper than Cinco de Mayo's, but they are also smaller. They also don't have cabeza (head) or lengua (tongue) tacos. My pastor taco was kinda bland, and my brother said his were also kinda bland. Their red and green salsas were also not super awesome But they do have the best cod (fish) burrito I've had on the east coast. The fish was fresh, cooked perfectly, and well proportioned with the rest of the ingredients. The only thing missing was the creamy, smokey, somewhat spicy, baja fish taco sauce. The best Mexican food in Bergen County hands down. Consistently excellent food, wide variety and reasonable prices. Mainly caters to takeout crowd although there are a few small tables for eating in. With the amount of foot traffic picking up takeout, wouldn't recommend for eating in unless you are grabbing a quick bite definitely not for a date or family meal. Love their tacos and taco salad but everything we've ordered the 25+ times I estimate we have ordered from here in the past 7+ years has been very good. The counter staff could certainly be friendly. The same young woman has been there for years and she is downright grumpy and barely can manage a mumble. But, the food is so good I won't let this detract from the rating and recommendation to try this place out. They have a sister restaurant in Ramsey which I believe caters more to eat in crowd but I have never been there. read more

Let me begin by saying El Azteca is our favorite place. The food is consistently delicious and the service is consistently great. Now let me tell you why El Azteca is OUTSTANDING. Last night 3/13/21 I arrived to pick up my food. The place was busy --many people waiting to pick up their orders. The front of the house was taking phone orders, packing up to-go orders and keeping things moving and organized all while maintaining a calm, hospitable demeanor. The back or the house was slammed (my assumption because ) they were churning out order after order. We did need to wait an additional 20 minutes for the order to be ready but it was worth it! El Azteca is an endearing hole in the wall, that any Mexican food enthusiast is sure to fall in love with. When we sat down, we were greeted with a welcoming basket of homemade chips and salsa. Although the chips weren't as salted as we had expected, the salsa added the needed salty flavor for the perfect bite. The nachos were, unequivocally, one of the best nachos we have ever had the pleasure of introducing to our mouths. The structural integrity of the chips were an unprecedented quality that put this dish ahead of the pack. There was not a soggy chip in sight. The cheese was wonderfully melted and savory. The addition of refried beans, and other authentic flavors created a perfectly balanced, and harmonious dish that made us wanna stand up and dance the salsa! My colleague Nicholas ordered the chipotle chicken burrito. He commented that the burrito was absolutely exceptional. He specifically mentioned that the chipotle had just the right amount of smoky flavor, a quality he has not seen in many other chipotle flavored items. I tried the chicken, and can attest to this as well. As for me, I ordered four tacos: ground beef, steak, chorizo, and pulled pork with pineapple. The pork with pineapple was the best by far - when I took my first bite, there was an explosion of flavor. The salty, tender pork was immediately present, but was cut by the sweet subtlety of the juicy pineapple. I loved it! As for the steak and ground beef, there was not much to say. They were simple, good tacos that could be easily enhanced with the provided hot sauces. As for the chorizo, it was probably my least favorite, but still alright. My colleague Nicholas commented on the over-seasoning of paprika, which I concur with. Another aspect of the tacos worth noting was that they were double wrapped to maintain their structural integrity, and although the meats were juicy, there were no signs of excess grease and leakage. The value you get for the quality of food is absolutely mind boggling and we left the restaurant softly smiling to ourselves after a wonderful meal. We are definitely coming back. read more

Best Al Pastor tacos outside of San Diego/Tijuana !! Super fresh and made right in front of you on the grill. Ask for the green salsa, it's perfect on top of the tacos. Meat is super moist, they give you 2 shells for each taco to prevent spillage ... and good pricing too. read more

This was our second time eating in this hidden gem. This visit my husband and I decided to share the 4 soft shell taco menu option (two steak and two chicken) because we didn't want a heavy lunch.The tacos were tasty, with just enough spice, but not enough to satisfy two hungry adults. We added the chips and salsa. The salsa was a bit spicy for our taste, so next time we may just get the guacamole. We look forward to exploring other menu options on your next visit. Just got back to the office after a team lunch at El Azteca and I could not be a happier girl. The food is phenomenal, and the service is pretty fast. I had a combo of cheese quesadillas and hard shell tacos, and the free chips and salsa that they provide make the meal more than satisfying. The rest of my party each had 4 tacos and were pleasantly surprised at how good everything was. I think we'll be back in the near future. Only negative is the small restaurant has limited seating so prime lunch time can get a little crowded. Try to stagger your arrival or place an order to go. read more

Hmmm. I am in Paramus, NJ which is sort of like a barren Death Valley for good Mexican food. I would only give El Azteca a 2 if they were in California, but here in New Jersey it is a welcome relief from the endless Applebee, Chipotle, etc mega chains on Rt 17. This is a cute, small mom and pop restaurant with a few tables and take out. They have clearly tweaked the menu for a North East palette. Nothing too spicy in this menu. They are known for their burritos, which are great value. The staff is very friendly and the food was good, but a little bland for my tastes.but nothing that a little Tabasco sauce can't partially fix. Worth a visit read more

Based off of the Cod Burrito I had, I have to give it a good review. The best fish burrito I have had in a long time. The Cod was cooked and fried perfectly, flaky goodness. The burrito was stuffed, perfect ratio of cod:rice:guac:beans. They also grill the burrito before serving it which is a nice touch. They normally close at 8 we got there after, but since there was a family finishing up dinner, they still made us food. I would come back just for this anytime. read more

Stopped by this place based on the Yelp reviews when we were looking for Mexican after a Halloween event. The place is small, but has a relatively comprehensive menu and low prices. For the price, you get a LOT of food, which was both a pleasant surprise and hopefully promising for the things to come. However, there were four of us, each of us agreeing that the meats were poorly seasoned and rather bland. Not the worst thing, and I could have chalked this up to an off night or just a mediocre restaurant. However, what sealed the deal for the one star follows here: my girlfriend gasped and grabbed my arm 3/4 of the way through our meal. She tells our group she saw something. We look around and, lo and behold, a mouse was skittering across the floor, ran directly under our table, between her feet, and disappeared into the place. Our company saw it, as well. We mentioned this to staff, and they denied it. We did not finish the meal. I did pay, as I'm not a person who refuses to pay for a meal, but we will not be returning. read more
