I was craving Mexican food, so I chose La Candelaria to try their sopes. The order I placed came with four pieces; I asked for one of each filling: carne asada, trompo, chicken, and chorizo. Two were enough to make a satisfying meal. I'll share the other two with my husband. Now, regarding the sopes themselves: I can honestly say that the quality was so authentic, it felt just like eating them in Mexico. The meat--both the beef and the pork--was delicious; they are topped with lettuce and either *queso fresco* or *queso panela*. On the side, the order also comes with a sautéed serrano pepper, limes, radishes, and nopales. Each order includes a green salsa and a red salsa; they were quite spicy--flavor-wise they were good, though a bit on the runny side. The price per order is excellent, and as I mentioned earlier, one order is enough to feed two people since the sopes are generously filled. This time, I ordered directly through the Yelp app (which redirects to Grubhub), and the delivery was very fast. Kudos to the team--I will definitely be ordering from this place again! I will give this place 2 stars. Both stars are for the guacamole. We waited an hour to get our food. With 2 kids. It was not pleasant. No one refilled our chips or checked on us until 40 minutes into our wait when they asked if had already ordered. But. The chips stayed empty. They don't sell alcohol so unless you bring your own drinks you are just sitting there waiting and hoping for more chips. The food was not special. Love this authentic Mexican restaurant. They closed for a little due to a fire, and my husband and I checked every week until they opened, and then of course made a date night to have dinner there as soon as it did. The seafood soup looks as good as it tastes, same with the seafood appetizer. I have never had a bad meal here, be it lunch, dinner, dine in or take out. The restaurant itself is spacious and byob. As usual, I am loathe to write accolades about a favored restaurant because then we find we can't get in to the place anymore, but I want to see these little independent restaurants stay happy and successful and we will work around the crowds! La Candelaria is a tiny little place on the main drag in Bergenfield, Washington Street. It's right across from the Cinema, and there's parking in the back, so let's get that out of the way. (A note about the back door -- there is no sign, it looks like an apartment door, and you will only find it if you look for the exhaust hood and fan on the roof -- but hey -- there's parking, so don't complain). When you enter La Candelaria, you are struck by the cleanliness, the unbelieveable Mexican art on the tables and chairs -- truly, each item is a treasure of color and tradition. The menu is simple, it's mostly in Spanish, and the staff are not fluent in English, so bring your phone and look some items up like we do. Better still, just pick something and try it. Walk on the wild side a bit. Anything we have ordered has been fresh, beautifully prepared, and garnished with actual grilled veggies, from cactus to scallion, that you can enjoy along with the entree. Some of our favorites -- Quesidillas, specifically the Al Pastor, which is tender beef with pineapple -- Chicken Flautas, Fried Calamari, any of their Tacos, from steamed tongue to brisket -- just good, clean food. Oh, let me wax poetic about their Flan. Save room and get it. That's the poetry right there -- it's eggy, creamy, kind of like a custardy ice cream and there's nothing wrong about not sharing it with the table; let them get their own. Go. While this review will not put out them out of business I'm hoping it puts a few less $ in the owners pockets. Last night, 1/1/23 we ordered some tacos and fajitas because my girlfriend desired Mexican. She wanted extra Pico de Gallo so I ordered some. Yes, I'm a middle aged white guy and my pronunciation of said condiment may not have been as authentic as they're used to but I didn't expect the covered up laughter. After she had a little snicker and chuckle with her co-workers she returned to the phone and said, "that'll be ready in 20 mins". When I picked up the food I knew I wasn't imagining things because they again chuckled and I heard, "hombre" and "pico de gallo" and I was the only customer there. The food is ok, nothing great but if you desire Mexican food in Bergenfield and you've no other options, go ahead but there's better places in Bergen County with much better service. Super cute and bright decor, we were trying to go to a place next to here for cinco de mayo, but it was packed so we ended up here. Service is okay, they have a small staff and one of the girls didn't speak much English, so a little slow and food took a while to come out. This place is pretty, colorful furniture and the server was pleasant and friendly. The food was ok, but a bit too salty. Three nice little tacos for only 7 dollars served with guacamole. While I liked them they were missing the pico de Gallo. When I asked about it I was told that was extra. I was surprised since that always comes on a taco. I would have paid more if included but wasn't told until after it was served. Next time I will make sure to ask for them the way I like it and pay more. read more

The one star is for the pork tacos I got as take out orders. We went for eat in dinner. The place: Very cute decor. The ambiance: awful for one reason- the juke box. There were several families having dinner when a guy from the kichen wearing a baseball cap came out to the jukebox and put loud rap music on. A waitress cranked it up with a remote they had behind the counter and was dancing along. It really broke the mood of the place. Didn't fit with a Mexican restaurant, not that I expected Mariachis but it was waaay too loud and kids started crying. I don't blame the kids. So I told our waitress I wanted our orders (which hadn't come out yet) to go because I didn't want to listen to rap music. She must have mentioned that to the kitchen staff who must have thought my husband (who is Anglo looking) complained. When we got our orders home his "fajitas de carne asada" looked like boiled grey meat in water and his refried beans also were ful of water meanwhile 2 other orders were fine and unwatered. I can only think of this as a "screw you" from the kitchen. I wasn't rude or nasty. I tipped the waitress because the music had nothing to do with her and she shouldn't lose her money because of someone else but apparently gringo customers can be punished if they don't like the kitchen staff's choice of blaring music. If that guy was a staff member he is seriously is affecting the owner's business. He can listen to his choice of music on his own time. If he was the owner its a really awful way to treat customers and only hurts his own bottom line. I won't go back for fear of getting another sabotaged meal. read more
