Welp, I have some things to say. Now do not get me wrong, this place was not bad! Let's start with the positives, the design of the restaurant created prime Mexican vibes, and the service was actually quite stellar!! Now for the food, the queso was basically melted cheese, which isn't bad if you think about it(I eat melted cheese all the time!!) but a queso should be a good dip for chips and stuff. When it came to the tortillas, they were not bad, but they were not necessarily fresh authentic Mexican tortillas. The last thing for food is that the portions were not the size I would prefer, especially for how much it cost, and my stomach was still growling for more munches and grub by the end of the meal... Always a great time at Chapala grill. This place makes you feel at home. Always welcoming and always smiling. The best staff around. There margaritas are what I come here for and the fun is why I stay. We enjoyed some drinks and shared a plate of churros with ice cream which were delicious. Delivery order last night! -Tacos Mexicanos with steak were delicious as always . 3 BIG tacos with corn tortilla and cilantro on the top. Very Mexican!!! -Enchiladas Rancheras is like be at home. 3 rolled corn tortillas with melted cheese and a delicious tomato sauce on the top. Every delivery order comes with salsa, corn chips, a little container of guacamole, fried beans, Mexican rice or black beans. -Oh,ohhhh... We pop in here all the time. Servers aren't the bubbliest but they have been there for years and are solid. They know us and treat us like family. They offer nachos with hot sauce. They even bring an extra warm sauce on the side that isn't spicy for our son. Our son Loves their guac. He says it's the freshest around and is obsessed with it! Their margaritas and sangrias are delish, prices are super reasonable and dishes are filling, well presented and tasty. I tend to order the chicken chimichangas, my hubby either the fajitas or this huge breaded chicken cutlet that seems to be his favorite! He says it's juicy, perfectly breaded and well cooked. (Even kids can eat it). My son gets the chicken quesadillas with the chicken on the side (yeah not in the quesadilla. LOL) The retired beans can use a bit of seasoning but they are cooked well with a. Good consistency. This is a hidden family owned gem. They don't care about advertising nor chit chatting with customers because they don't have to. They've been around for over 20 plus years and they have their loyal customers. Not the absolutely most delish Mexican around but I haven't tried all of their dishes either and I really haven't found an amazing Mexican place around here anyway. Definitely worth a try, especially if you can go during happy hour which is basically every day! The bar area tends to fill up, the dining area does as well from about 6pm on. Got takeout tonight and thought the food was very mediocre. I ordered a Fajitas Chapala, Camarones en Salsa Verde, and chicken tenders for the kids. The Fajitas were the biggest disappointment. Both the chicken and steak were overcooked and dry. The Camarones tasted ok, but for $22, I expected more than 8 shrimps. All in all it was not an enjoyable meal. read more

Hmm, I don't know what it was the night we came, but we weren't impressed. I suppose there are items on the menu that are some go-to's. We saw many regulars, which seemed to us that they order the same item every time. I kind of wish I knew what that was. The staff was exceptional. Consistently asking us if everything was alright and filled our waters when need be. We ordered the Botanta Chapala, which was the sample appetizer that came with ceviche Puerto Vallarta, guacamole, wings, chimichangas, quesadillas, and flautas. I personally loved the ceviche! We also ordered the Combination of Chimichanga, burrito, and flauta. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of the items. Maybe we will try another item on the menu when we come back. read more

My bf & I came here on random Friday night, he lives in the area so we said why not. The place itself is really cute paintings on the wall & dim-lights. Waitress was so nice even though I knew she was busy as her section was full. We had the 1/2 pitcher of mango margarita for $17. Mango is not my favorite flavor in general but this mango tasted very fresh! We were each able to drink 3 small cups from this pitcher which I thought was great. They also start you with free chips & salsa which I enjoyed, I was starving when I got there LOL. I ended up getting the Texas burrito, it's 12.50 for a lot of food! Overall it was very good I am obsessed with their retried beans. The chicken that comes in the burrito is very "traditional" seemed slow cooked (in case you expected something grilled). My bf got the shrimp a la diabla. The shrimp was so good it had an amazing smokiness to it, my bf just wished there was more shrimp. To end off our meal we received 2 complementary treats which was so nice, I love when places do that! I would definitely come here again and try something else, I'm curious to see how their tacos taste & I definitely want more refried beans! Went to the Chapala Grill for the first time last night on a date and was expecting good Mexican food....I wasn't expecting one of the best meals I have ever f****ing had, I almost ate the dish. I'm from New York and first off the service couldn't have been more on point, our waiter was A1 and just genuine and nice. Now to the meal holy shit, we started off with the guacamole appetizer which was phenomenal and btw the salsa that comes regular with the chips was delicious as well. Then she had the bistec tampiquena, and when I say the steak was cooked to perfection not chewy perfectly cooked. I had the enchiladas mole poblano (f***ing phenomenal) and we finished off with a delicious flan. We ate and drank half the restaurant and the bill wasn't bad at all. Between the service, food, drinks and all I couldn't ask for a better meal and I will 100% be coming back. 5 stars without hesitation. read more

Chapala is definitely a local favorite, and beloved by maybe Bergenfield-ers including my boyfriend. He claims the sopa azteca is the best thing on the menu, and always follows the soup with s burrito or combination platter. However, as someone who did not grow up eating at Chapala I must say I was unimpressed. I ordered the queso fundió to start. The tortilla were good but the cheese was dripping in grease and made it difficult to get through. For my entree I ordered a combination platter with a chicken taco, tamale, and enchilada. The chicken taco was okay but nothing I couldn't have made at home. The tamale was also just okay nothing spectacular about it. The enchilada tasted decent but again lack luster. The presentation of the food doesn't help either. Nothing about it feels fresh or authentic. It's not the worst Mexican place in town but it's definitely not the best. read more

We went here for my father in laws birthday. My mother in law didn't make reservations and they totally accommodated 11 people with almost no notice. The margaritas were okay, we ordered a pitcher and they weren't bad. Could of used some more tequila. The food was not bad and came out pretty quickly. I went to Chapala grill with my sister and brother in law for dinner. Upon arrival, we were seated immediately by a friendly member of the staff. It took just minutes for another member of the staff who was just as friendly as our host to come to our table. We were asked immediately if we wanted something to drink and were served within a few minutes. The server then told us to take our time with the menu. Now, considering that the restaurant was pretty much packed, the server did not rush us to place an order and did not run off to another table. I ordered the 3 soft Taco Burrito with shredded skirt steak, my sister ordered a steak and my brother in law ordered the Salmon. It didn't take long for our meals to arrive and they were hot. The food was excellent!! The ambience is very nice and inviting. The cost for our meals was very reasonable!! I highly recommend Chapala Grill and am looking forward to a return visit!! read more

What an amazing family owned restaurant with great service and amazing food. You know it's good when a stranger walking in with you exclaims how much he loves this place. It was my first visit to Chapala Grill which is funny because I actually live in town and LOVE Mexican food. I made reservations for 13 people for my birthday. They were so accommodating and service was spectacular especially with such a large group. Food was delicious and not a single one of us was disappointed with our food. My fiance and I both ordered the Texas Burrito which is HUGE and filled with flavor. Fast forward a month later I went back with my BFF and of course I ordered the same thing. No disappointment here. My commute brings me past Chapala Grill every day, and I've been wanting to check it out since it opened. We went there last night and I was not disappointed. Not one bit, I tell you! This is the best Mexican food I've eaten since relocating to the area. To start, I had the avocado seafood appetizer, my boyfriend had the black bean soup. For dinner I chose a combination dish, he chose tacos. The soup bowl was scraped clean, it was that good!! The avocado seafood salad was good as well- maybe a little large for an appetizer though. I would have been fine if I just ordered that without dinner. The tacos and combo platter were both good, although next time I think I'll try the fajitas. And there will definitely be a next time! The space is brightly decorated with paintings and peach-colored walls. Service was leisurely and friendly, volume was just about right- not too loud or too quiet. I've had this place bookmarked on my YELP account forever, and I finally got to try it recently!!! The BF and I went during happy hour, there were $5 appetizers, and $5 house margaritas. We ended up getting the mango margaritas and a mango corona Rita- they were delicious, my fav! Our waiter was a cute Spanish guy and he was excellent. We had empanadas for an app and they were okay- but they should add cheese to them! The BF got a burrito and I had an avocado salad. The drinks and the service are good here, but the menu is extensive and the food was mediocre compared to a ton of Mexican restaurants I've tried in the city. So first off I want to say how sorry I am for not posting a review sooner! I've been coming here pretty much since they've opened and I really enjoy their food. I def understand why people complain about the service because I have definitely experienced poor service here when dining at a table (hence my 4 star rating), but I always sit at the bar now. They have a great happy hour (discounted apps and drinks). I can't say there's anything I've had there I didn't enjoy. Enchiladas, chiliquiles, burritos, tamales, empanadas, flautas, tacos, chimichangas, quesadilla........you get my point. Their drinks are also on point. Margaritas are strong but tasty, sangria is great, and I've discovered a new favorite: Micheladas (beer, lemon or lime juice, and hot sauce served in a salted rimmed glass)!
