Wow, I wasn't expecting to write this review for Einsunternull. I read such amazing reviews of this new entrant to the fine dining scene in Berlin. My friend and I were super excited when we arrived at the restaurant. However, what ensued was a painful 3 hours, after which point we were still only halfway through the menu. I have to imagine the restaurant was super short-staffed our night there, because the food was literally arriving one course every 45 minutes. I'm not exaggerating. It was tortuous. To the restaurant's credit, the staff was super friendly and cheerful. They were all eager to please, but (perhaps because they were short-staffed), everyone was mildly frantic. We were given the same welcome speech twice by two different people, and then again asked for our aperitifs order by two different people. The space was also pretty cool. Dinner is served in an underground cellar decorated in a very minimalist fashion. However, the wait between courses killed the experience. Even bread took forever. Because we were starving, and no food was coming, we asked for more bread, and even that took 30 minutes. We had to ask for the wine list twice I asked the staff about the long wait, and the response was pretty unprofessional (certainly not befitting a restaurant that is clearly trying to angle for a Michelin star). The staff member's immediate response was to blame the kitchen for being backed up. There was no attempt to apologize or own the problem. After 3 hours, we couldn't bear it anymore. We were only halfway through our prix fixe, and there was no way we were going to stay for another 3 hours. We asked to cut the dinner short. The food was only so-so. It seemed like the chef was more interested in presentation than taste and flavor. The wines by the glass selection was pretty poor. Their fullest body red was an Italian cabernet franc that was pretty thin. The sommelier was kind enough to open a bottle of something off menu for us, but even that wasn't very full-bodied. Disappointing. Here were the menu items we were served: 1) Amuse bouche: baked potato with wheat flour, summer vegetables with zucchini cream, carrot emulsify soup 2) Shaved beef heart on radish and watercress 3) Thinly-sliced mushrooms on a paste made from mushroom, linseed oil, and deconstructed bread. The paste was a bit bitter, and the mushrooms were cut too thin to have much taste 4) Mayonnaise roe on a cucumber. The leaves were a bit bitter, and the roe was flavorless 5) Braised onion soup and spruce. The onion was a bit too tart, and the spruce made it taste like I was eating a Christmas tree (not in a great way) 6) Chicken served with a solitary chicken yolk. Also: a chicken soup with chicken liver, tobacco leaves, and white garlic. The chicken soup was quite good, but the chicken itself was overcooked -- chewy and tough 7) Sliced carrots with anise and walnut cream sauce. Good flavors read more

My husband and I wanted a nice elegant meal together as we hadn't seen each other in a few weeks. Were looking for modern German cuisine. Followed the Yelp recommendations to here and lucky to grab last minute reservations. We had the non-veggie 7 course selection. Everything was beautifully prepared and presented. Loved so much fresh fish and some meat. The desserts and chocolate were also lovely. We did a wine pairing. Lots of whites and bubbles and a rose, and red. Mix of German, French, Portuguese; some were nice a few others missed the mark. Then again we live in Sonoma County so could say we are a bit picky with our wines. The over all experience was wonderful and just the quiet evening together we needed, with a beautiful meal. read more

What an amazing dining experience!! First off the service was out of this world - we had the most lovely server, happy, helpful, considerate. The sommelier came with each wine pairing, describing the wine and why it was paired with the specific course. As different waiters brought out the different dishes, they explained what they were serving - a must for food nuts. The Jerusalem artichoke amuse gueule was a trip for the senses, followed by wonderful caramelized pears and kohlrabi. My favorite dish was the igelstachelbart or lions mane mushroom with very thinly sliced pork belly and sunflower seeds - a wonderful combination of flavors and textures. Second favorite was the marrow with Jerusalem artichokes and apple purée. The wine pairings were fun, too. Definitely recommendable and if I give five stars they must really have impressed. read more

This was an awesome dining experience! We came here for our 9th wedding anniversary while on our first trip to Berlin. We had the 7 course prix fixe (1 with wine pairing, one without). It was quite an interesting experience. They use very fresh in-season ingredients. So, for example, we had a dish with lots of white asparagus. (It actually was not one of my favorites.) The dishes are plentiful but not huge so one is not overly stuffed at the end. The chef is clearly playing with texture and mouth-feel and taste with his creations. And each dish looks like a work of art. (The bread was awesome. I always like talking about the bread in fancy restaurants because to me it is a measure of how well the establishment is paying attention to every single detail.) There's clearly a reason why einsunternull has 1 Michelin star even though I think it is less than 2 years old. A very unique dining experience! read more

Fantastic food! One of the best taste sensations during my two years in Berlin. You get an option of trying 6-10 dishes. Where 6 dishes cost 77€ and 10 reach to just over 100€. They are all very small, but taste amazing. You can choose from a wine package or a non alcoholic drink package, which we did. The different juices and drinks were almost as good as the food. WOW! The service was great and the staff really knew their area. Make sure not to be in a rush. We were eating for 3.5 hours, and many other tables took even longer. Will def come back! read more

It is fantastic and foods are amazing! A lot of good surprise:) We love it a lot thought the portion are very small. Their service is great and so attentive. We had the 10-course dinner. Unfortunately, we were disappointed. We have eaten way better in Berlin. The food creations lack taste. There is no thrilling taste while you work yourself through your dinner. The whole experience took almost 4 hours and was way too long. To me and my friend this was just embarrassing. As we saw the dishes arrive, we had to restrain ourselves from laughing. The ingredients used were super cheap and basic, the dishes all tasted the same and had no flavour. The waiters describing the food tried to make it sound elaborate but there was nothing sophisticated about it. It felt like being in the legend of The Emperor's New Clothes, where everyone is admiring the emperor's "new clothes", until a young boy notices that actually, the emperor is naked. read more

This was one of the worst meals I have experienced. None of the dishes tasted delicious, which is a paramount rule of cooking. All of dishes invoked weird creativity to which we just could not relate especially since it was not founded essentially on good taste. We had the 10 course prix fix with the wine pairings. One of the dishes served to us looked (and tasted) like dog poop. It was runny and an unappealing gray-brown in color with some green herbs on top and tasted awful. I am allergic to some grains so I asked for rye seeds to be left off a particular dish, but the restaurant told me "no," I could not because the dish's creative integrity would be lost. No substitutions whatsoever, so I was not permitted to order the dish at all. Our party of three paid the price because we all became very ill afterwards. No way was this restaurant worth the value or experience. read more

What a let down! This is probably the most overrated restaurant ever, I really don't understand how they can get 1 Michelin Star. Let's start with the good things, the restaurant decor is very nice and the water only costs 3 EUR for a large bottle but that's pretty much all that is good. We went there for the lunch menu which is quite cheap for 45 EUR for 5 courses. First we had half an endive with some coffee powder. No flavour and literally just have of a small salad with some powder on top. Next were some Champignons cut very, very thin with some reduced mushroom sauce, again I thought this was a joke, there was nothing on the plate and it just were some cut mushrooms... The fish was a sushi sized piece covered in some ash with a bit oil, that was actually not that bad but certainly nothing on a Michelin Star level. The best thing was the slow cooked beef ribs with potatoes. This was actually the only decent dish from all the 5 courses. Dessert was forgettable, some slow cooked reduced beets that didn't taste much. After the five courses we were still hungry and left very disappointed by the quality of the food. Service was nice but they were a bit overwhelmed which made them serve us the wine for a few dishes too late. Overall the most disappointing fine dining experience I had so far. Even looking at some of the reviews it seemed we were in a different restaurant. I hope this was just a bad day for them, but for me I certainly won't go back there and I cannot recommend anyone going there. read more

I had an eight-course vegetarian dinner. This is such a lovely place. Very clean interior, softly lit, handmade wooden boards and pretty glassware (I admit this is only interesting if you are into this kind of stuff). Most waiters are all very friendly and welcoming. We had five or six different waiters during our dinner, and one or two seemed to be in training. I love restaurants where I can feel the passion for food and this truly is the case here. They approach food in a similar way to nearby "Das Lokal" on Kleine Hamburger. Ingredients are locally sourced, and hence everything I had was made from typical German vegetables. This time of the year it was lots of roots, eg salsify (usually in season in winter). We paid EUR 660 for dinner (incl wine) for 4 people. I can't wait to go again. Food will surely turn out differently in spring. read more

We ( party of 4) went there on a Monday. "Cool" albeit elegant- in the Japanese sense- interior in the basement of an old building. Almost all tables were occupied but the wait staff was nevertheless friendly and - most of the time- attentive and relaxed. We had ordered the 10 course menu; every one of them was surprising, special, adventurous, avantgarde and experimental. Understand? Meaning: all courses were very interesting but not necessarily tasty, sensually exciting or just plainly yummy. E.g.: The soup that came as the "Gruss aus der Küche" and the first 2 courses, "Gebackenes" and "Landkaffee" , were rather bland and " tasteless", their most exciting features being the way our waiter explained the ingredients and their artful arrangements. The other bites were delicious and highly unusual. In my opinion the restaurant and its "philosophy" is trying a bit to hard to be avantgard and its "hyperregionalism" seems a bit " affected". But go taste for yourself! Either way it will be an animated and stimulating (taste buds and brain) interesting meal. And, finally, the wine list is small but very well selected! read more
