Went here recently with some friends after volunteering with Girls on the Run downtown. It is a super cute place but small so it can be hard to find a table during rush time. Also it is a little hard to find since the sign isn't super to read at a glance. They have a pretty small menu but honestly I am pretty sure everything on it tastes great. I got their special of the day, grits with barbacoa, an egg and jalapeno sauce. It was a twist and a yummy one. It was my first time having Barbacoa and the waiter warned us it would be more gamey. I enjoyed this place, so much that my friends and I went here twice in a row the two days we were in St. Louis. My favorites were the French toast and the eggs benedict with pork belly. The french toast is tastyyyy and so is the eggs benedict. The sauce is delicious. The potatoes are salty but fried so well. I'll also tell you that their strong coffee is strong. I've been a daily coffee drinker for over six years now and this coffee is a kicker. Strong strong strong stuff. The staff is super friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is fun. The place is very much overrated and overpriced. Was told the wait time was about 25 to 30 minutes ended up waiting close to an hour. Ordered a hash and it was just meat not much of anything else which cost $20. Ordered toast it came with two small pieces of French bread that was very dry. That was $3 and it tasted like it has just been sitting out and they warmed it up. Also my friend and I split and order of French toast that has no flavor it does not like like some of the pictures online. It was bland and the bread was charred. Our total bill ended up being $70 and it was not worth it. There are so many other locally owned brunch places that have a higher quality of food and are reasonably priced. read more

Our red-eye flight to St Louis touched down around 5:30am and by 6:30, we were headed to Egg to get some breakfast and most importantly, coffee. They're supposed to open at 7 and others are waiting outside - it's 6:55 and the place is totally dark. 10 mins later, a sedan comes speeding up and parks, and out comes the owner and a couple of the staff. I've never seen a restaurant totally dark and locked up until it's time to open and it should've been a sign of what was to come. More on that later! By 7:20, the place is filling up. The owner is running around to all the tables, trying to bring water and coffee. Things are slow. Eventually, probably about 20-25 mins in, we place our order. The menu has an interesting combination of flavors: smoked meats (pork belly, pulled pork), Tex-mex (breakfast tacos), standard American diner (omelettes, eggs to order and bacon), and Middle Eastern (Shakshouka) - it's a bit all over the map without a strong unifying theme, but the upside is there'll likely be something for everyone. The food takes a while to come out - heck, even the one espresso-based drink our table ordered took a while to come out. There's definitely a bit of chaos - it's almost as if the staff rolled up 5 mins after opening and did no prep... Hmmm :p The food is all pretty tasty and in true midwestern spirit, the portions are ridiculously ginormous. Think you can eat two breakfast tacos? Ha! Each one is jam packed with scrambled eggs and a ton of your meat of choice - there's barely enough tortilla free to even pick the thing up like a taco. Everything tastes great, but their chorizo shines. This is a great breakfast spot, and perhaps today was an off day, but don't expect to eat and be out of there in a hurry. read more

During our short spring break stay in St. Louis, I got a craving for some French toast. A quick Yelp search led us in the direction of Egg and I'm so glad we stopped here for brunch! The place is small and there's no huge sign out front so you have to keep your eyes peeled or you'll drive past it like we did! We sat ourselves and were taken care of pretty quickly. I had a mimosa and a DELICIOUS latte with a half order of Brioche French toast (Mmmm) and one Mexican tostada. I loved EVERYTHING! The tostada was crunchy and savory with refried beans, cheese, a fried egg, and salsa verde. The French toast had mascarpone and a generous service of blueberry compote (YUM!). Going to Egg the Saturday morning of Mardi Gras weekend is what I like to call bravery. On the edge of Soulard and in the Benton Park neighborhood, this spot has a great location. It's really close to our house, too, so I want to come again soon. This place is ran by the folks to own Spare No Rib, which are some of my favorite tacos in town. When I heard about Egg, I was excited to check it out. Like I said, we went for brunch. A-OK is all I can give my recent experience. I ordered the Bloody Maria, which had tequila as the base. The garnishes it was served with was an olive and lime, I love it when Bloodies are served with more vegetables than this one was. I needed something more. For my meal, I went with the Grits special of the week. Grits, braised beef, egg, jalapeño salsa verde. I guess I wasn't expecting it to be doused in chili oil or something? I expected the salsa to have some heat, but because of the oil, I felt like I couldn't fully taste everything in the dish. Not my favorite. Next time I go back, I'm going to get tacos, my wife's looked really good. I wish there was more chicken on the menu in general. For me the hospitality went a long way. Such unique and delicious food! I went for brunch and had such trouble deciding on what to eat because everything on the menu looked so good. I liked the inclusion of cornbread in a variety of dishes on the menu- it felt unique to order cornbread with gravy when most places would use biscuits or toast. I'm not sure how I feel about the location- it's right on Gravois so it's very busy and cars are speeding right by the place, which makes it kind of hard to find. We had a great breakfast at Egg this morning! I started off with a double shot of espresso and my husband ordered the beermosa. I didn't try his, but he liked it! The espresso was delicious! We each ordered the specials. I got the cheesy grits and shrimp topped with two over easy eggs and green salsa. It was phenomenal! The spice was right on, the grits had a silky texture, and the shrimp and eggs were both cooked perfectly. My husband had the other special which was ribs, bean, some type of sauce and was topped with two over easy eggs. It also came with bread. He said it was great, but I didn't try it. Came to egg on a Sunday morning with a group of 3 and got in after about 15-20 minutes. Nice place with the bar seating and lots of tables spread throughout. I had been meaning to come out to Egg for some time, but hadn't had the chance to, plus was a little concerned because most of the menu items have corn (to which I am allergic to). I ended up getting the El Cerdo Hash - Poached eggs with carnitas, spinach, jalapeños, on a bed of potatoes and topped with salsa. I can say that I finished the whole thing. I liked the combination, especially the tender and flavorful carnitas, but I wish it had an extra kick to it and that the potatoes weren't as dry and small cut. If it's called a Hash, I feel like the potato part should be one of the main stars. I was surprised my latte looked so cool with the layers and the foam on top. Pretty good latte, would recommend. Overall, nice place and good food, but a bit far and I don't think I would crave the dishes. (Maybe a different story for corn eaters because there's more options). read more

We are visiting our kids in Missouri. My husband loves to look up restaurants and this was one on his list Great little spot. It's on a Main Street. Parking was easy, but lots of fast cars swooping by. I ordered ElCerdo. It's a carnitas plate with potato's and spinach. It has two beautiful poached eggs on top. I must say it was delicious. I would have to compliment the chef for making such beautiful poached eggs. The seasoning on the carnitas was really delicious and everything just went so well together. My husband had the veggie Benedict. With a side of sausage. The Benedict comes with potatoes avocado and spinach. The corn bread they used for the Benedict was outstanding.
