I've had my fair share of "egg puffs" or hot cakes, as they're more often called in NYC, and these were certainly one of the better batches that I've had. Although my batch was not made to order(she was closing in 10 minutes), they were still warm when I got them. The egg puffs are mildly sweet, fluffy and chewy! Definitely more dense than what I've had in the past, too -- several of the carts that I tried in NYC Chinatown serve hollow hot cakes, grrr. An older Chinese woman runs this egg puff fry stand in a small food court. She is warm and friendly though she doesn't say a lot. Apparently the egg puff is a Chinese spherical answer to the waffle I haven't found in new York (it's taken off in Boston though.) At the end of the somewhat meandering bland place is her grill. I found this place through the help of yelp. My boyfriend and I came to Chinatown to explore the neighborhood. As I was yelping nearby treasures, this particular egg puff location came about. In NYC there is a little cart on a corner street that sells these bad boys, but you usually have to wait at least 15 minutes and it's pretty expensive. When we arrived, we were a litte bit "lost". It can be a little bit tricky to say the least to locate this amazing gem. It's located all the way in the back of this small strip mall. When we arrived, no one was operating the cart, but within a few seconds, we were greeted by this lovely lady. We ordered 30 pieces for $2.75!!!!! THIS IS A DEAL!!!! In NYC, it would be $5.00 for 30 pieces. We thanked her and continued exploring Chinatown, but we didn't get far. Considering this is the only place in the entire Boston Chinatown that you can get this stuff, it's an automatic 4 stars already. "egg puffs" are a Hong Kong staple that i grew up with. They come at $1 in Hong Kong for a bag, so although the $2.75 seemed like a rip off at first...I got over myself. These things are meant to more belgian-waffle like than pancake when it comes to texture. Flavor-wise, they are sweeter since you're not meant to eat them with syrup. Meaning, they should have a crunchy crust that has a good bite to it, but the core should be soft and chewy but NOT overly doughy. I grew up with this particular stand full of delicious Asian-styled "pancake balls" or "egg puffs" as they are called. Back in the 90s up to early 2000s, this particular location used to be known as the notorious 2nd floor where you got your grimy and delicious Asian cuisine stands (Juice Bar was there too). The thugs and teens hung around there, along with the random arcade games. Egg Puffs was among those stands, and I knew the owner/maker as a child. When 2nd floor was shut down and converted into apartments/business places, the Egg Puffs disappeared. I thought that was the end of my childhood there. Boy, was I wrong about that! About 1-2 years ago, I noticed there were food stands forming in the 1st floor. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the same owner with an upgraded Egg Puffs sign making them the same way as I remembered it! Ah the joy and nostalgia I felt when I received my bag full of 30 egg puffs! :D The texture is maintained in the balance between soft fluffy centers and crunchy exterior of the egg puffs. The flavor is sweet, but not overwhelming to make your teeth rot off. I have been to Hong Kong a couple times in the past but never got to try these out. With that being said, I don't have a good comparison on what it should taste like. I have to say I am a fan. The owners of this stand can basically be my grandparents. I've lived in the Boston area basically my entire life, and this was my childhood favourite. I've enjoyed egg puffs ever since I was little and my mom would give me some money to go buy a bag for my sisters and I to share. This food court area used to be a lot different from what it looks like today, and I remember when there was also a banh mi stand right next to it! I love the egg puffs here. I've never had egg puffs until this place came into my life. I used to go to avana a lot (the sushi place right next to the egg puff cart. It's normally made by this old grandma who's really nice. It's the best when she makes it for you right then and there but sometimes she has them made. (Not as good). One time she burnt one a little bit but I said it's okay and she gave it to me for $2 instead of $3. These egg puffs are not too sweet which is why you can eat so many without feeling guilty. This place was pretty hard to find. It really is at the intersection of Tyler St & Harrison Ave. Once you're at the intersection, just look around for a place that says Food Court... The place itself really isn't a food court. Itz a size of a small cafe space, cramped with 3 (or 4) different places inside. Needless to say, I was pretty excited when I found this place. Finding these egg puffs were like tracking down an amazingly good food truck. Anyways, I finally go in the food court and saw the cute, pink little cart. Tucked away inside a building, it was hard for me to find this place because it's located in a mini "mall plaza." For $3, you get about 30 ping pong sized(maybe smaller) egg puffs inside a brown paper bag(be careful grease can seep through!). Slightly seared on outside for slight crisp bite and super moist on the inside...it was like eating chips; popping one after another into my mouth because it was so addicting. Great to share with friends too. Another reviewer said that they used to charge $1.25 which now I come to think of it, sounds more reasonable. I also saw that it was raised to $2.75 but now it stands at $3. Glad to see business is booming but I feel like if they keep raising the $, it might steer away potential or past customers like me! It's amazing how sometimes the most simple things are the best. This older woman pours pre-made batter out of a jug into a classic "Danish" pancake ball pan (or some Chinese and Cambodians use it also for other things) and cooks it over 2 stove top burners. She then flips it and places it into an electric skillet to keep warm. I'm not sure what the overhead for rental etc costs but the supplies and ingredients are pretty basic yet people LOVE that stuff. The egg puffs are like a sweeter version of a fluffy pancake. Since they are cooked in a ball pan, there is an even outer layer of crisp to contrast with the soft and (sometimes) gooey inside, which probably contains raw eggs ans we shouldn't be eating. As far as egg puffs go, this place is only ok. The smaller pieces make better for sharing, but at $2.75 for a bag of 30, it's definitely more expensive that what you typically find. To my knowledge, it's the only place in Boston so the prices are warranted. The smell is fragrant and subtle sweet like a waffle or little pieces of pancakes that straw from the whole.
