Don't believe the hype. This is the kind of restaurant I'd ordinarily never even consider venturing in. However, after seeing all the great reviews and hearing glowing recommendations about them I decided to give it a try. It's the sort of place where everyone stops what they're doing to stare at you when you walk through the door. It's very old and musty on the inside. The food was mediocre at best. I got the "highly acclaimed" crab cake which was just ok - nothing spectacular. French fries were overcooked and raw at the same time. Green beans were soggy and tasteless. I really have no reason to go back. I think in this instance you'd be correct to judge the book by its cover. read more

I had the luxury of visiting this establishment twice. I believe this is one of the best seafood restaurant in the area. The seating is a little tight however I would rub elbows while dining here. The seafood platter has more than enough for one person. Had to take home 1/2 of the meal. Did not mind it tasted just as good the next day for my lunch. Want to share another experience for mother's day. Had dinner at the Edgewater Restaurant in Edgewater, Maryland. This is an establishment that I pass by 3 -4 times a week and the parking lot is always full. Its a steak and seafood restaurant so I figure my loving girlfriend and I try something that we know, I'm in the seafood and restaurant business, but as always, just because the lot is full doesn't mean the food is great. Once we entered, I noticed the clientele was mostly middle class from around the surrounding area, menu was a mother's day menu which seems watered down for the busy mother's day rush. Wasn't a long wait to be seated and the service was good. We ordered fresh fried zucchini sticks, good; cream of crab, frozen soup from Blount with added pastuerized chinese jumbo lump; lobster bisque, frozen soup from blount with lots of crawfish pieces. I guess the chef thinks the clientele isn't smart enough to know the difference. For dinner, I ordered an 18 oz N Y strip steak. It was big and plentiful but no taste, B grade meat. sides were blah. My cute girlfriend ordered stuffed flounder, she ate a quarter of her meal. She complained of the blandness. None of it had flavor. The flounder had no flavor, probably because it was frozen turbot and the stuff crabmeat had no taste. Very, very bland food. At least put some old bay on it or salt. Total cost for 2 was $90. Too high priced for plain tasting food made from cheap ingredients. To sum it up, the food sucks for its price. McDonalds would of been a better value and food. As for thinking that a full parking lot meant good food. Thats a big no. read more

Edgewater was on our route and I had heard about it once before from an old army friend so I decided to yelp a place. You guys gave the thumbs up about this place and couldn't have been more right. I mean my taste buds were screaming with joy!!! The crab cakes were AMAZING, the best I have ever had! I seriously can't imagine better crab cakes! Amazing. My husband and I are in the process of moving to Edgewater from Bowie. I decided to stop by Edgewater Restaurant during a recent trek down there based off the yelp reviews. I went on a Wednesday, the same night they have the $15.99 crabcake meal special. I arrived around 6:20ish and didnt have to wait to be seated but by 7pm it was jam packed (this place is tiny) and my food still had not arrived. I'd be damned if those crabcakes were not worth the wait!!!! They are by far the best crabcakes Ive ever had and I am a crab connoisseur. The crabcakes are better and CHEAPER than Jerry's Seafood and The Oceanaire!! HANDS DOWN!! I took my husband there the very next day so he could try them. It was no way near as crowded as it was the day before. I presume the half off special drives the locals out. Talk about party in your mouth :) YES, the decor leaves a lot to be deserve but the staff and the quality of the food totally makes up for it. read more

Visited this fabulous restaurant on Father's Day with a group of friends, one of which grew up in this area and has been talking about the crab cakes for months! :) Luckily we made reservations because others trying to step in last minute were given an extensive wait. There were seven adults in our group, most of whom were new to Edgewater... Food: All of us ordered the broiled lump crab cake platter with twice baked potato. Meal came with salad bar (slim pickins but the applesauce and the pasta salad werre realllly good!), cheese spread/crackers, soft rolls too. The crab cakes were every bit as HUGE (baseball size) as we had been told. The lumps were very large and juicy! No flat pancake style cakes made with filler here! Service: The ladies at the bar were friendly and accomodating while we waited and the service in the dining room was equally as good. Drinks were kept filled, condiments were brought upon request, and pay time was a piece of cake. Bottom line: Edgewater is definitely worth a trip if you're in the area, or even if you're not! We live near DC and I will be planning many a road trip to this place when I'm craving great crab cakes. read more

As near to perfection and 5 stars as I have ever given, yes I gave 4 stars, perfection gets 5. I had the crab imperial, wonderful lump crab in a custard type base of egg I suppose, hardly any filler, but rich and delicious. So rich I could only eat half as I had the cream of crab soup, again another winner with a shake of sherry and old bay provided at the table. My husband had fried chicken, a plumb bird with a thin and well seasoned coating. The fried okra was very good, obviously freshly harvested not heavily coated and not greasy. Twice cooked potato was a disappointment, dry and uninteresting. Table across the way had the green beans which looked good and a large portion. Every table gets a portion of port wine cheese spread with crackers a nice add while you wait for your dinners. My husband who had club soda received a mini pitcher with limes on the edge for his refills. Great food, and the value adds of the crease and the mini pitcher just reinforces this family owned restaurants reputation for quality and customer service. Five of us had a delicious lunch at the Edgewater Restaurant recently. When you enter there is a bar area with seating, a dining room straight ahead, and one to the right. The paneling is dark but there are some nice touches, including hanging lights with a nautical motif that are whimsical and cheerful. When we arrived on a Saturday around 1:00 the place was very busy, but a waitress/hostess was keeping things moving, so we only had a brief wait. We had a few minutes while we were waiting to check out the menu and to see plates of food being delivered to the booths in the bar area, so we all pretty much knew what we were going to order. Three of us had the lunch special with a crab cake, fries, and one trip to the salad bar for under $12, so quite reasonable. My granddaughter ordered the lunch size fried chicken platter with 2 pieces of chicken and choice of 2 sides. My husband ordered the dinner size fried chicken(4 pieces) with choice of 2 sides. One person ordered crab soup and three of us had Bahama Mamas, a tropical cocktail. There was a basket of crackers on the table and shortly after we were seated hot rolls were delivered. They looked good, but having seen the size of the platters I didn't pay any attention to them as not to ruin my appetite. The salad bar was small, but everything seemed fresh and there were enough choices to make a very decent salad. After we finished our salads the food started coming out--platters of hot, crispy, delicious crab cakes, fried chicken, French fries, and fried okra. The crab cake was one of the best I've ever had, crispy on the outside, creamy and crab-filled on the inside. The French fries seemed to be freshly cut and not frozen. I tasted the crab soup and husband I decided to order two bowls to take home for dinner, one cream of crab and one Maryland crab. My only minor complaint about the soup is, though very plentiful, the crab seemed to be the South American crab that many restaurants are using instead of sweet blue crab. The Bahama Mamas were strong and tasty. After that feast we were all full and had no room for dessert! The service was good, timely but not rushed. There were obviously a lot of regulars who the waitresses greeted by name. I'm a little glad that I don't live closer to this restaurant, as I would be tempted to be a regular and I certainly don't need all that addicting fried food! Someone watching their diet could put together a low calorie meal with some creativity, but they would be missing out on an outstanding platter of crab cake or chicken, as well as other menu choices I'm sure. read more

You can get 2 pretty big crabcakes for around $32 and they are satisfying. The other menu items are okay, but I would just stick with the crabcake. When this restaurant prepares a seafood platter, they put their foot in it!!! (Translated: It is ridiculously good!) We eat here more than all the other seafood restaurants we go to combined. When you come in you will usually find yourself in a long line of folks happy to be waiting in that long line. The meals are served with LOVE by the children, grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews of the original 1940's family, the food is always made to order, abundant and HOT. Jerry's, Timbuktu, Blue Dolphin, Red Lobster, Phillips, Legal Seafood and McCormick & Schmicks serve seafood with sophistication and fine corporate execution. The Edgewater Restaurant serves it like you are a distant cousin coming over for the family seafood night. (No tall menu cards or branded napkins here!) If you have not been to the restaurant, call ahead. It is closed Mondays, Tuesdays and for a full week twice a year for their massive family vacations. My roommate had mentioned a number of times how good the crabcakes here are and once I finally tried them out I wasn't disappointed. Big lumps of crab meat, not too much filler, I'm not sure what more you could want. Some people aren't happy about the fact that they don't use local crab meat but considering the state of the Chesapeake's crab population I think it's understandable. Another thing that makes this restaurant very appealing is the service and atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly and it's the sort of place where the waitstaff calls you "hon" without any irony. Forget everything else on the menu, just get the jumbo lump crab cakes! Even after going to Fadley's in Baltimore, I'm still convinced that you can't get great crab cakes in Baltimore. The jumbo lump crab cakes here are massive with huge chunks of crab meat and very little filler. These are how crab cakes SHOULD be made! I'm still trying to decide whether I like these or Jerry's crab bombs better. Yeah, yeah, yeah the salad bar isn't that good, but a friend once said it best, "you don't make friends with salad." Went tonight for the Crab Cake Special $18.95. Everyone in our party of five was disappointed. As native Marylanders, we know crab cakes. The salad bar was okay, but the cole slaw was bad. The beets are spicy instead of pickled. Weird. No one in our party ate them. The dressings are good, but the salads choices were extremely limited. The lettuce was crisp! The star of the meal, the crab cakes, were a huge let down. Their fryer is too hot, so they have to pull the crab cakes before they are cooked all the way through. The center of the crab cakes is wet and unappetizing. I wanted to send my crab cakes back to cook longer, however our server wasn't really available. It also took a long time to get and pay our bill. We won't be back. Next time we want crab cakes, we'll make our own or go to Jerry's Seafood in Bowie for reliably fabulous crab cakes. read more

Decided to check it out after several recommendations. It reminded me of Bay & Surf in Laurel, wood paneling and no windows. You sit close to your neighbors. But none of that bothered me. Jerry's Seafood has better salad, better soup & better crab cakes. I would go back and try other things on the menu like fried platter or fish. Prices are good, $75 with tip for 2. I have eaten here a couple of times. I come here for the crab cakes. I like my crab cakes to be nearly all crab with just enough binder to hold them together. In other words, I like to have a big lump of crab meat on my plate. They prepare the crab cakes here just that way. The restaurant is an old beach cottage and it shows. The atmosphere is that of a seaside dock restaurant/bar but without the view. The restaurant really needs to be renovated and updated. The restaurant could also be cleaner. So why have I been there multiple times? The crab cakes! I should also mention the prices are reasonable. read more

I rarely write a review but I have to say that today was the first time I enjoyed eating a crab cake. It was a lunch special with a generous portion of fries and cole slaw. The crab cake was moist and flavorful. All other times I've tried to eat one at other restaurants they were dry and over seasoned so that the crab meat flavor was muted. The word is out and I have confirmed it! They have the best lump crab cakes in Maryland! (If not the world!) I had doubts to even try this place... but since this is what all of the Annapolis locals are saying, I had to try it out for myself. A few restaurants could afford to close two entire days... even fewer restaurants could afford to do that and close for lunch during the weekdays! Edgewater is the king of crab cakes and they can dictate the hours they open and close. Amazing!! For $29 you get 2 large crab cakes (the size of a baseballs, about a pound in weight total, with all plump, white backfin) and 2 sides (the salad bar is a must). It is about $5 pricer than other restaurants and it is worth it! It's a family style, locals place, and the staff says hello and goodbye to people by first name and will chat you up with movie reviews. The second thing I love about Edgewater is their honesty, when I ask them if they use local Maryland crabs for their crab cakes, they quickly confessed that they use Asian crab meat. I only came here for the cakes and did not try anything else. Compared to G and M's crab cakes this Edgewater's crab tastes fresher and sweeter... basically it tastes more like just picked fresh crab. read more

Let me start by saying, the only reason they get a 2 is because our waitor was great. The food is WAY over priced. The crab meat is good, but when I order stuffed shrimp I want more then a boiled shrimp laying on its side with crab meat thrown on top. The crab cakes are huge and taste pretty good, but not as good as Olive Grove or G&M's. The atmosphere is a 0.its in a converted house so the waiting room is in the dining room. I could literally reach from the waiting room and grab something from a guests table. I have seen better bars in people's basements, they don't have any beers on draft. I would not order anything but the crab cakes from here, and I would get them TO GO, and that's only if I was in a hurry and didn't want to make the trip up north. read more
