Coconut Joe’s Bar & Grill

Coconut Joe's -- 5 Stars Because Nikki Ran the Bar Like Mission Control…read more Walked into Coconut Joe's expecting a basic lunch, left emotionally supported, hydrated, and full of crab. Ordered a Caesar salad tossed with bacon, because if you're not putting pork in your salad, what are you even doing? Cold, crisp, dressed like it was taking headshots for its modeling portfolio. Then the cream of crab soup showed up -- thick, seasoned, real chunks of crab, not that mystery-flake stuff. It was the kind of soup that makes you stop mid-conversation and reevaluate life. Washed everything down with an orange crush, which went down so easy it should come with a seatbelt. But the real star of the whole visit was Nikki behind the bar. Let me be clear: Nikki ran that bar like NASA counting down to a launch. Full bar of people, drinks flying, food landing, and somehow she made it feel like I was the only one sitting there. Every empty glass was just a short-term inconvenience. Every ask was handled before I even finished the sentence.

I frequent a LOT of restaurants and I treat my visits just like I treat my relationships. I know what I want, have my expectations, and know how I need be treated. It's real simple. When you know, you know, and Coconut Joe's Bar & Grill is that place! They are sticking around in my world. Ambiance is refreshing as it is located near water, where boats can dock and come in for food. It's giving Outer Banks vibes. Service, our sweet waitress was the BEST! She was pregnant and was literally the hardest worker in there! It was busy and I did have to go to the bar to get help but when I said "excuse me" I was rudely told to "hang on" by the bartender. I just walked around and got what I needed, super rude girl BUT our waitress was so nice it really made up for it. Red Flag forgiven! Let's get into it! Deviled Eggs - Really Good! Crab cake - Delicious! It's hard for me to agree to a crab cake being good, this one was it! Drinks - Great! The other half agrees, we will be back! Not quite 5 stars for me - I'm intricate when it comes to my observations, some plates were chipped, the appetizer ones specifically on our visit. A little help is needed with bussers , and cleanliness.

I wanted to confirm that the crawfish was fresh and not frozen. I had noticed in some previous order that food didn't taste fresh. David kindly confirmed it was fresh and this was the prime time to enjoy. (David was helpful) I ordered the Fish basket that comes with fries and coleslaw. You have the option to select cat fish or rock fish (selected the rock). I also got Cajun boiled that comes with potato, shrimp, corn. I included three orders of the crawfish in the boil. The family was disappointed, many of the crawfish was NOT fresh and many of the tails were mushy. It's like it was frozen and overcooked to the point of texture was ruined. Out of all the crawfish three were fresh. Highly disappointed. The flavor We got was the shack medium spice but it was flavorless. The rockfish was extremely dry from the inside but crispy from the batter. The French fries had to be place in the air fryer and add our own seasoning. The coleslaw was the best out of everything. I would like to know what happen? I used to order from here all the time once it opened. The food was fresh and you could tell. Who ever made my food when I first review this spot. Please let me know because I need them back.

It's supposed to be a wine bar, I guess, and the wine is their main focus, though they are also apparently well known for their pizzas. Despite it being busy, we were seated pretty quickly in the back area, and were served quickly. Our waitress was great, and offered a lot of good drink and food suggestions. I love the way the wine is broken down. They've got three categories, which are snarky grouping by price. I am drawing a blank on the names of the categories, and they're not on the website, so .... they were something like, "Wallet Friendly Wines," "I can splurge a little," and "Money is no object to wine!" Theirs were probably better and more creative -- dock me one star as a reviewer for not remembering. :) The wines were good. I tried two different ones, including an unusual "orange" wine, which is a white wine left to contact the skins. It was a little fruitier than I usually like in a white wine, but it was good still. The food for me was where it fell down. I ordered a charcuterie plate, which was honestly kind of skimpy for the price. I also got a burrata, which is served with "harissa roasted carrots." The harissa was incredibly spice forward, and... burrata is a delicious, but delicate cheese. The carrots and harissa basically contaminated it and overpowered it. They might as well have dipped it in coriander and cumin. That's fine if you want to eat coriander and cumin, but not if you want burrata. My pizza was the biggest let down. It's a "rustic" style pizza, but it frankly translates to "poorly made." It's a good size, roughly oval pizza, with very thin, crispy crust. Like a giant cracker. It's then cut into 16 pieces (give or take, don't quote me). Some of those pieces had /nothing/ on them. Like, just crust. No cheese. No sauce. No toppings. Others had just sauce. I'm not a big fan of pizza, but when I eat it, I expect every piece to have sauce, cheese, and toppings on it... if I wanted to eat just crust, I'd just ask for a pile of aperitif crackers. Great atmosphere, good drinks, fair price, but ... terrible food. If I lived nearby, I'd stop by for a drink now and again, but I wouldn't eat there.

They have a lovely outdoor patio space that was covered with space heaters for the winter, and I can only imagine how great it will be in the summer. The service was great throughout. I wanted to make sure I got a wine that paired well with our meal so the server recommended I order the wine after the food so she could give me a recommendation. We ordered a charcuterie board, glazed carrots with burrata, and the spotted pig pizza. The server recommended a Sangiovese to pair, and it was an excellent choice. It tasted really good with everything. The charcuterie board was good but honestly a little skimpy on the bread and apples so not every bite was evenly distributed. I enjoyed the burrata - it was a really interesting mix of Italian and Indian/Middle Eastern flavors that was unique and different. The pizza was also good but like the charcuterie board, the toppings were not evenly distributed so there were some bites with everything, and some bites that only had sauce or cheese. It is thin crust so if you do not like thin crust, you may not be a fan. I am a thin crust fan, so I enjoyed it overall!
