I was in Birmingham for the Hurricane Ida evacuation and needed a drink after the long taxing week I had along with many others; so I randomly found EastWest on Google. I was on the hunt for fresh local food to see what Birmingham had to offer. This place was super cool! The decor was fire; the street lanterns were a nice touch. For appetizers the table had char-grilled short ribs, fried cauliflower, and the west wings. The wings were tasty, the short ribs had good flavor, but were maybe a little thin, the cauliflower was my favorite of all the appetizers you'd never know you were eating a vegetable. For the main course I had a Fried Shrimp Tempura Rice Bowl and a Osaka Spritz. I could eat the rice bowl all day everyday, it had great umami the balance of the salty soy sauce and fresh cucumbers were a match made in heaven. The Osaka spritz had good flavor, I love the taste of lychee my only critique is it could've used a bit more alcohol. Overall would recommend. 10/10. Coming from out of town and researching the perfect spot for Valentine's Day weekend, I knew this restaurant was the one. I made reservations at 7pm and already knew what I wanted to order. We got there 20 mins early and they were still able to sit us down promptly. Saturday night was busy, so it was a little loud. But the ambience and decor made up for it. A beautiful mural, red and white Chinese lanterns cascaded across the ceiling, and a red candle on the table added romance. I ordered the Osaka Spritz drink, and my boyfriend got the Silk Road. Mine was very light...couldn't tell there was alcohol in it but it was still tasty. But I did like his drink better because it was stronger. However I didn't come for drinks, I'm all about the food! I was so excited when I saw the menu - they have a great selection of Asian fusion food that sounded mouthwatering. We got the soft shell crab bao, short rib bao, shishito peppers, and Korean fried cauliflower. The short rib bao was delicious- nice caramelization and bold flavor. I just wish the bao was warm. Soft shell crab was good too. The lemon flaky salt on the peppers were the perfect touch. Lastly, the fried cauliflower was delicious also but I just wish it was more crunchy. We have had this place bookmarked for a while, but due to some fellow yelpers having less than stellar visits, we've postponed for a while. We recently purchased a gift card, which would ensure we would give this place a try. We arrived on a Thursday at 5PM (when they opened). I wanted to get there early because we had an evening event to attend, and I didn't want to deal with long waits/lines. That wasn't a problem, because the entire time we were there, 5PM - 6:15, there were only two other tables that were occupied. Maybe crowds come later in the evening, or on the weekend, but I was pleased with the service we received. My husband and I wanted to try several of the small plates, so we ordered several of those instead of entrees. Duck Nachos : my favorite! The duck, cheese, toppings, and wontons were so unique. My mouth is watering thinking about that. Cauliflower: decent. Not my favorite, but we did enjoy the sauce that was coated on the cauliflower. Wings: Were pretty good. Came here with some friends for dinner after having heard good things. For appetizers, we had the spring rolls and duck nachos. Spring rolls were crisp and tasty. I liked the smoky flavor that they had too. Duck nachos were unique: duck, fried wanton wraps as the chips, and kimchi queso. Overall, I liked this dish. It had Asian flavors in it despite it being nachos (cheese isn't in Asian cuisine), and it was tasty. The entree I ordered was the special of the week - Red Grouper. I usually stay away from seafood if it is in a landlocked location and also because they usually skimp on the portions. However, this dish was quite memorable. A decent portion of soft, flavorful grouper over risotto and asparagus, topped with a creamy, sweet and a little spicy coconut curry of some sort. This is the quantity and quality I would expect for $30. I liked this place better than Bamboo on 2nd (close by). The wait on a Friday was quite longer than we were initially told, though, and the food took a long while to arrive too. Overall, a good place to eat. read more

I'd like to start off by saying 10/10 recommendation from me. I went here on a date, and my biggest complaint was street parking was absolutely garbage and I had to walk super far to get there. We were seated immediately and the menu/drink options were really good and fairly priced. I had the Chardonnay, Bao Bun, and the Soft-Shell Crab Bowl. He got the Spicy Garlic Noodles, and everything was super delicious. The spicy noodles are indeed pretty spicy but everything was really tasty with great presentation. The atmosphere is very lively, it was pretty loud when we went (on a Thursday night). I felt that at some points in the night, I kinda had to tell a little bit but overall, it was a great time. I'd highly recommend as an after-work place, date night, or just a nice place to stop and get some good Asian food. read more

Updating my previous 5-star rating because my car was towed from the parking lot adjacent to EastWest after being parking for 8 minutes. To be clear, the food & service at EastWest is SUPERB. But, unless you park on the street or use valet, there is a high probability you will be towed. For reference, the tow to a lot 1 mile away cost me $185. I am not sure if EastWest contracts with this company for towing services, but it has deterred me from dining with them, sadly. read more

Everything we eat from here and every time we dine in is a great experience. This seriously might be my favorite restaurant. Our most recent meal at EastWest was the katsu chicken and chocolate torte. I'm so glad they decided to make the chicken katsu a staple menu item because that dish is just... mmmm. I could eat that all the time. The portion size is great and the curry mustard is such an interesting take on it. It reminds me of Japanese curry and traditional chicken katsu sauce slammed together. The torte was also fantastic. I'm not sure if this is a regular menu item, this was the first time I had seen/tried it, but it just melted in the mouth. Definitely stop by and try some great food. I can't brag enough about the food, atmosphere, and service at EastWest. I'm not even sure where to start. The food was AMAZING. You can't leave without trying the WINGS. They come out hot, smoky, and with a deliciously savory sauce. The Duck Nachos are such a unique appetizer that works so well. I love the crispy airiness of the wonton chips drizzled in what I believe is yum yum sauce and feta on top. I wasn't expecting much from the Tempura shrimp rice bowl but it was honestly the best tempura shrimp I've ever tasted. The rice had an almost sweet flavor to it that was so unexpected but so good. I wanted to lick the bowl guys! (But I didn't haha) The atmosphere and service are top tier. It's super modern, yet quaint and sophisticated. The candle add such a romantic touch so it's perfect for a date night or even girls night out. They have happy hour specialty cocktails for $6 from 5-6 as well. East west is probably one of my favorite restaurants in BHAM. The ambience is great, it is especially perfect for a nice date night. The low lighting makes it difficult to read the menu at night, but otherwise it creates a great vibe especially with the candle lighting. The menu is super diverse, and everything is absolutely delicious! I have not had a dish or drink I did not like. They are well known for their rice bowls, the soft shell crab is probably my favorite! Their bad buns are also really delicious and well made, especially since this is a rare dish to find around town. The service is also quick, and staff always appears attentive. Reservations are a must, especially on weekend nights. I usually don't have trouble reserving a table, although without one you may be waiting a bit (30+ min) on busier nights. read more

Totally forgot to write about my visit to EastWest for my visit in Birmingham. This spot was a GEM. From service to the ambiance and food everything was so great. Highlights include the chicken wings and duck nachos as appetizers. That sauce on the wings was 10/10 and the duck was so tender and delicious with the other toppings. The shishito peppers weren't cooked down enough for me. I had the chicken rice bowl for my meal and was completely full when all was said and done. Pretty sure I licked the bowl clean afterwards, it was so delicious. Definitely will make a point to visit here next time in town! Don't miss out on this spot. read more

The atmosphere of this place is cool. It's small but has a dark and edgy vibe. All of the food I've tried has been pretty good, including the wings, garlic shrimp noodles, ribeye, and pork belly bao buns. The duck nachos were the BEST and a MUST TRY! The menu is not too badly priced so we ordered a bunch of appetizers to try, two entrees, and two beers for about $100. They also have quite a few drink options. Definitely recommend this place if you're looking for Asian fusion food and vibes. read more

We started off with Fried Cauliflower (our favorite), Spring Rolls, and Duck Nachos (amazing). I had the chicken rice bowl (has chunks of pineapple) it was delicious! So shoutout to the person who came up with the Masala Mule. It's one of my favorite drinks of all time and definitely worth trying while you're waiting for your seat. Which is what my party of four did - made our way right to the back where the bar was ;) Once we were seated, our party decided to share a couple of small plates for dinner. We ended up sharing the short ribs, the chicken lettuce wraps, the Korean fried cauliflower, and Chinese duck tacos, We also ordered the Teriyaki chicken rice bowl as well. Out of the food, my favorite dishes were probably the chicken lettuce wraps and the Korean fried cauliflower. The chicken in the wraps were seasoned perfectly and not too juicy/saucy, and I also loved the pickled shiitakes. As far as the Korean fried cauliflower, I was pretty impressed! Kind of reminded me of General Tsao chicken but crispier and better, ha. I felt that they gave you a decent helping of it, too. My least favorite of the dishes had to be the Teriyaki chicken rice bowl. There wasn't anything about the chicken that gave a wow factor, but I did appreciate the fresh kimchi and carrots that it came with. As far as the mood and the vibes, it's definitely a "date night" restaurant. I liked the decor and the dim lighting we had for dinner. Overall, a fantastic experience. Service was great. Came here with a group of 6 on a Wednesday night. We really wanted to hit wing Wednesday and called ahead to see if we could get reservations or what the wait time was. They don't do official reservations but I think sometimes they'll put you on the wait line. The wait was about 45 minutes from 7- around 745. Long wait but totally worth it. Everyone ordered a round or two of wings and I also ordered an orange beef entree. It comes with cube sliced beef, carrots, kimchi, and rice. I loved the dish don't get me wrong, but I think there could be some really great improvements to it! For 16 dollars, they don't scam you on the beef portion. Although it comes in a small bowl, it's loaded with beef cooked to perfection! The real downside of the dish was that it was overly sauced and all of my rice became over covered in sauce. The dish was very enjoyable at the beginning but wasn't as great towards the end. Possibly add more rice and lessen the sauce that accumulated at the bottom of the bowl. The wings. Wow they were good. If you're here on wing Wednesday and not getting messy with the wings then what are you doing!!! Service. Super nice, quick on taking our orders, quick on drink refills. Awesome service! I will definitely be back and update my review if I like the other entrees! We decided to try out EastWest after seeing a picture posted on the Yelp Birmingham Instagram page. It was a cool atmosphere when we walked in. Our waitress was quick to come take drink orders from us and was very helpful with choosing from the menu. She told us that their brunch menu changes quite often. We got beignets for an appetizer and I got a drink. The beignets came out very hot and fresh. They were gnarly. My drink had a nice flavor as well. For our entree, we went with the steak and eggs and the shrimp and grits. The portions were big. The shrimp and grits had a good spice to them and had bacon, pork, collards, and some green onions in it. This was outstanding. The steak was a high quality meat as well with a lot of flavor straight from Japan. The presentation was nice as well. Our waitress checked on us multiple times and made sure our drinks were full. The first thing I have to say about this place is that the service was absolutely awesome and our server was amazing and from the looks of it everybody seemed awesome. The vibe was so cool and I hate I can't remember our waitresses name but she was super dope and I can't wait to visit again. We were only stopping in for a quick bite before a concert so we ordered appetizers and a drink. We tried the West wings and the spring rolls. OMG the wings we're Smokey,crispy, sweet and tangy all in one and the spring rolls were good but not the best I've had but still good. I so wanted to try the soft shell crab steamed bao bun but they were out of the crab so we went for the pork belly instead and it did not disappoint us at all. I'm so bummed that I can't remember the drink that I had but it was the special drink of the night so maybe that helps. Where to BEGIN! I am in Birmingham on a work trip, staying downtown. Walked upon this place (also saw yelp reviews) and thought let's try it. Claudia was our waitress, I wish we could just take us with everywhere. Her recommendations were everything!! We decided to order a few dishes to share. We started with the wings, Claudia's first recommendation (must get) finished them in seconds. I'm surprised I even got a picture. 100% amazing. Than came the pork Bao Bun, it was big so we cut in half, highly recommend and I'm not even a bun fan but this was finger licking good. Than came the Ribeye, wow.... I hate green beans at restaurants because they aren't fresh most of the time, HOWEVER these were FRESH and to die for!! The ribeye itself was worth every penny. Medium and perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth. Just WOW. We were stuffed.... however wanted to hear the dessert menu since we were 3 for 3 in major food wins. EastWest is one of my new favorite places to get wings. On Wednesdays, they have half off wings which cost around $5 for about 6 wings. As you can imagine, the crowd during the dinner hours is insane. Waits can range from 15 mins to an hour even near closing time. The front of the store does not have much room for the large amount of guests that are waiting for a table, but within 20 minutes, my party of 5 got seated The time I went, I ordered two orders of wings for a total of 12. I've never had wings that were smoked and then fried before, but man these were something else. The smoky taste with the crunchy, saucy bite took me to a place I'd never been before! I've heard these wings were amazing and I didn't believe it, but I definitely understand why now. Alongside the great food came great service. I have nothing to complain about because this entire experience was eye-opening. I'm sure next time I come I'll order something other than their wings, but it'll be hard considering how delicious and addictive these things are. read more

The fried rice seemed to be a favorite; the flavor combos from the sauces were astonishing. The hot chicken & waffles were oh so good.
