EastWest is one of my favorite restaurants in town. Whenever I'm not sure where to go, EastWest is an easy answer! I love that you can order anything on the menu and know that it'll be tasty. have been excited to try east west for a while and they did not disappoint. We went on NYE so they were pretty busy, yet the staff was very attentive and helpful. They had a special NYE menu that included some dishes that were not on their regular menu. We started with the duck nachos and wings. I personally thought the wings were too salty. The ducks nachos were my favorite because of the crispy wonton chips. We decided to go with a NYE special- the flounder and two regular menu items- the chicken katsu and Mongolian ribeye. All three dishes were absolutely delicious. If I had to choose a favorite, I would say the ribeye was my favorite. It was tender and juicy with a sweet flavor. The chicken katsu was nice and crispy. It was good but steak over chicken of course. I would definitely order the flounder again if it became a regular menu item. For desert, we shared the nye special. It was good! We also ordered the Mr. West which was sweet and Osaka Spritz which I could never really decide how I felt about because of the rose and vodka mix. EastWest never misses! I go here pretty much every time I'm back in Birmingham. The Mongolian Ribeye and the Duck Nachos are a must every time I visit. The wings, bao buns and Korean cauliflower are delicious too. I always have good service. I attended this restaurant for a pharmaceutical dinner hosted by Gilead. I have been to EastWest before, but had no idea they had a private room upstairs, which was set up very nice and accompanied by one server that was great. Yelp! It's 2023 and I'm back in these streets. This stop, its ladies night. Yelp and we all happy. First stop, EastWest!!! Yes! It's giving me everything. Starters were Chinese duck nachos, short ribs, west wings, spring rolls, shishito peppers and the Korean fried cauliflower. Yum. Everything was real good, except the cauliflower. It was just okay. Real crispy on the outside but mush in the inside, our least favorite. Jules was serving all the good dishes and advice on entrees. Thanks Jules! Fee had salmon, her staple here. Frances and I had the Kobe burger, Picky had the orange beef bowl and the matriarch had the soft crab bowl. Delish! We even had dessert, the coconut bread pudding. It's a must try when you come here. The ambiance itself is such a vibe! It's dimly lit with candles and Chinese lanterns all around. So cute inside. And then there's the food! YUM! I normally get the Katsu chicken (which is so juicy and amazing) , but today they had a Wednesday special or half off wings. So I got an order of the wings and the tofu lettuce wraps. The wings are smoked and then fried which makes them so flavorful and juicy. The sauce is great and a little messy. The tofu lettuce wraps have me wondering why I had never tried them before. I was looking forward to trying EastWest, and I hate to say that it missed the mark for me. I'll start with the good- my waitress was remarkable- she had a great memory and i didn't have to remind her of anything or wait endlessly for her like at most restaurants nowadays that are over staffed I tried the katsu, fried cauliflower, and duck nachos. I would say the most delicious thing was the katsu. Though it was deep fried it didn't feel too oily and greasy. Loved the sauce on it. The cauliflower and nachos felt way too heavy and oily, like I was just eating gobs of butter. I get that southerners like their fried food so if you grew up eating everything deep fried you may enjoy it. The duck on the duck nachos had too much star anise and it just tasted funny. Cocktails were pretty good but super tiny. The ambiance looks cool in pictures but I wasn't really impressed with the interior. I really enjoyed dining with EastWest! The restaurant is really nice and easy to find when you're walking along the downtown sidewalk because it has a really large and visible sign! This is important to me because I've had some trouble finding certain businesses downtown due to the signs not being visible or the writing too small. Anyway! The food here is worth a try if you like Asian cuisines with a unique twist. And they have keto friendly options as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes! I only got the short ribs which were very tasty and tender! They were somewhat sweet but had like a tangy barbecue flavor to them. My fiancé got the chicken bowl, my friend got the spicy garlic shrimp, and I believe her fiancé ordered the orange beef bowl. We all ate our meals until they were gone! No one had any complaints. They also ordered fried Korean cauliflower which smelled and looked amazing ! Our server was okay. She was quick but didn't seem like she wanted to be there. The seating was decent but it's not that big of a restaurant so I would suggest reservations. We made reservations a week before coming so we didn't have to wait at all. The lights are dimmed low if you're looking for a romantic vibe. I didn't get to try the cocktails or dessert but I definitely will next time! read more

Arrived at 5:00pm for dinner and was informed they were booked solid for the night unless we wanted to sit outside. That was fine seeing it was 70° and sunny. There were at least 4 tables in the restaurant with no one sitting at them. Those same tables stayed empty until well after 6pm with 2 of them until 6:30 when we left. Not sure about their reservations system. The outside tables were weathered and the chairs were cracked and chipped. Not a good look. On to the food; our appetizer spring rolls, very average. My wife had the spicy shrimp and noodles, she says not very spicy but OK. I had the fried Katsu chicken, good presentation and quite tasty. My chicken breast was very flat like it had been flattened or butterflied but there was only 1 piece. Sautéed vegetables were quite good though. My wife had a drink called the Mr West. Very flavorful. Overall the experience was average at best except for sitting outside. We will give them another opportunity just to see if we got them on a bad evening. read more

Ok we are always down for Asian food and this is the new favorite. We happened to go on a Tuesday and it's tapas Tuesday with drinks and tapas marked down. The drinks were amazing!!! We ordered multiple things to try (at $4 a plate why the heck not). My favorites were the duck nachos, wings, and pork belly bao bun. The nachos are served on crispy wontons. I was afraid they'd be greasy but not at all! The wings fell off the bone and although quite messy, super worth it! Not sure how I haven't rated this place yet! It is a great spot for dates or hanging out, though I do wish they had more seating. If you time it wrong, you will be waiting a while! But that's a good problem for them to have. The staff are always nice, though depending on how busy it is, it may take them some time to get back to you. The food is, simply, very tasty! I love the bao buns. I get the pork belly, as it is just the right mix of the light, fluffy buns and great tasting pork. The cauliflower and the short ribs are a must as your appetizers. This past trip, we tried the chocolate torte. That was very good, and a chocoholic like me appreciated it. I'm not a huge fan of the nachos, though my wife loves them. There are usually weekly specials running as well, giving you an option to try something new that isn't normally on the menu. Looking forward to coming back soon. read more

So, one my friends suggested EastWest because of the awesome deal on the West Wings on Wednesdays. Sounded like a great plan and a great plan it was!!! I went right on over to Yelp to see what my friends had to say plus other Yelpers. I arrived around 5pm and there were only those who were employed there. I checked to make sure they were opened. I realized that I do get off earlier than most. I decided to sit at the bar and Mr. Johnathan was very attentive. I had the 2nd Ave Sour, very refreshing. Great reviews on the West Wings, extra crispy. They were fantastic with my side of Curly Fries. Friends arrived and we were seated in a booth where David checked on us several times throughout. I had to end my evening with the bread pudding and it did not disappoint. I will go back and try other items on the menu but the West Wings hit the spot for now!!! read more
