The vibe in this place was so fun. You had a great mix of families and people gathered to watch the games on the many TVs that they had. Service was amazing. We got seated and our order was taken right away. Food was brought out and it was delicious. The butter chicken was our favorite. It was fried but not greasy. The fried cream tomatoes were also fried perfectly didn't fall apart kept all of its flavor a must try. They did have live entertainment when we walked in, which was really nice. Passed through Birmingham on our way back to Jacksonville and so glad we stopped at Southern for brunch. The minute we walked in and heard the live music, we knew we were going to have a good time. The food did not disappoint. My mom and daughter both had the pasta--one swapped the crawfish for chicken and the other for shrimp--and both versions were delicious. Hubby had the steak and eggs, and the one bite he was willing to spare was surprisingly delicious too! I went with the fried green tomatoes and Brussels sprouts because I already knew I'd be helping myself to some pasta from their plates. We finished it all off with banana pudding and key lime pie, and both were the perfect ending. Great food, live music, good vibes, friendly server and a fun stop on the road home. I've eaten there several times previously. The place was the least crowded I've ever seen it, we were there on a Friday evening, but did not appear anything going on at BBJC, so I guess that was why. There was a guy performing live there, and the music was not so overpowering that you were unable to talk across the table. Very pleasant. Service was slow but it appeared they were understaffed. Order bowl of Gumbo for appetizers. We went on and provided our entree orders at that time as well. We waited about 25-30 minutes a different person brought out our order. I ask the server to take the gumbo back, as we had order that as an appetizer. In a few minutes our original server brought the gumbo back to our table. I told her we had ordered that as an appetizers, the server apologized and said it had gotten "Lost in the kitchen, keep it, I'll take care of it". About the food, wife ordered salad with chicken. The salad had 4 large fried chicken tenders on it. I order the sirloin tips over rice. Overall tasty, but gravy was a little salty. Dish included some green beans as well which were tasty. Overall experience was ok, service a little slow which I don't understand with the lower population in the dining room. When I got the check, the gumbo was still on the ticket. Not sure what "I'll take care of it " meant, not what I expected. I paid for it without saying anything else. Actually it was pretty good gumbo. Came here to grab a late lunch and I've always had great experiences here, which is why I decided to try the greens and grits on the menu this visit. Unfortunately, it just wasn't for me. The flavors didn't come together the way I expected, and the dish was a bit underwhelming. The chicken bites were soggy sitting in the Gouda grits and the greens were basic and tasted like they came out a can. My brother got the pesto chicken club which is good choice. He seemed to enjoy it. That said, the service was still friendly, our waiter was great and checked on us frequently. the rest of the experience was just as good as usual. The Southern Kitchen & Bar always seems to do what I need it to do. Sunday Funday landed me here after having brunch & leaving an art exhibit nearby. After I finally got parked, I sat at the bar and Kenley provided me with great service! I ordered a $6 mimosa, listened to some live music and just really enjoyed the moment. I have never had their brunch but I plan to return soon to try it. Southern kitchen was always my Birmingham Stallions pregame spot .... In town for a conference and the restaurant was a block from my hotel. Inside is very casual. Kinda bar-like with a nice restaurant vibe! We sat at the bar since it was packed. Service at the bar was good considering every seat at the bar was taken. We ordered our food and it was out within 15-20 minutes. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken, but subbed the sides for the whole fried okra and Gouda grits. When I say those grits and okra hit.....somebody in that kitchen knows what they're doing! The chicken breasts were juicy and flavorful. The spice level was typical for Nashville hot chicken, which I sometimes I can't take. But I loved the flavor so much I couldn't stop eating it. I found The Southern Kitchen & Bar completely through Yelp and the Yelp reviews, and I am glad I did. When I came in, the place was crowded, which is usually a very good sign. It had a good energy right away. I had been looking at a few things on the menu and was really going back and forth. I was interested in the hot chicken, the Brussels sprouts, and also the ribeye Philly cheesesteak. They told me both were really good, and I ended up going with the ribeye Philly cheesesteak. Great choice. I also got a side salad with the chipotle ranch dressing and that was very good too. Picture below. For dessert, I was planning on getting the key lime pie, because that is usually my move, but Hayden my server talked me into trying the blueberry cobbler cheesecake instead. I am glad he did. First off the live music on Friday night was amazing!! A one man soloist who played multiple instruments was so good! The only name I got for him was Jerry. I started with a cocktail, strawberry fields which was just ok. It has strawberry vodka, fresh strawberry puree and lemonade. I'm expected more of the lemonade. We only had appetizers for a light meal. We had Cajun angels which was bacon wrapped shrimp, deviled eggs which were topped with candied bacon and fried green tomatoes which were topped with feta and tomato bacon jam. I came in here to celebrate my birthday since I was stuck in Birmingham due to work... Christi was my server at the bar. I came in right when brunch was about to be over but she check with the cooks in the back and they allowed me to get a quick order in I ordered the Southern breakfast bowl with medium well steak and an order of fried okra along with a yummy strawberry cocktail. I recently visited Southern Kitchen & Bar on Valentine's Day, and I have to say, the wait time was surprisingly short compared to other restaurants we checked. We waited about 20-30 minutes before being seated, which was impressive considering the holiday. Once seated, our waitress greeted us right away and was very attentive from the start. I ordered my daughter's food first. When the waitress returned with our waters, I placed our appetizer and entrées. Within 5-7 minutes, our appetizer arrived, and just 2-5 minutes later, our entrées were brought out. The turnaround time was shockingly fast -- I was fully prepared to wait at least 20-30 minutes for our food. Now for the food itself. I ordered the grits and greens but modified it. I swapped the turnip greens (since they contain pork and I don't eat pork) for a house salad and substituted the grits for garlic mashed potatoes. I'd rate my meal a 3/10. The fried chicken was placed on top of the mashed potatoes with a drizzle of hot sauce which made it was very soggy. For fried chicken, it also lacked seasoning. The mashed potatoes didn't really taste like mashed potatoes -- they were giving more "grits" than actual garlic mashed potatoes. The house salad, however, was good.. You can't really mess up a salad.. My mom ordered the shrimp and grits. She said the shrimp was nicely seasoned, but again, the grits just weren't up to par. She rated her meal a 3/10. My daughter had chicken strips with mac & cheese and fruit. The chicken strips were dry and a bit overcooked. The mac & cheese was just okay -- maybe a 4/10 -- but she absolutely loved the fruit. I also ordered a drink called the "Birmingham Belle," and it was really good. I'd give the drinks a 10/10 -- they definitely didn't miss there. Overall, the service and staff were amazing. Everyone was super friendly, respectful, and quick. If we needed anything -- extra ranch, utensils, refills -- they were right there. The friendliness and speed of service honestly boosted my overall rating. Would I go back or recommend it? Probably not. The food just wasn't up to par, especially for somewhere I'd suggest to someone visiting from out of town. If I rated it based on food alone, it would probably be a 2/10. But because of the staff and service, I'd give the restaurant an overall 4/10. I will also add that this restaurant is definitely not cheap, so be prepared to spend a little if you decide to eat here. I honestly think the pricing played a big part in why I rated it so low. The food felt overpriced and underwhelming. My meal was $25 and I truly don't feel like it was worth that price. Overall, the restaurant felt overpriced, and unfortunately, the food just didn't measure up. To be fair, this wasn't my first choice for Valentine's Day. I originally wanted to go to Pappadeaux's Seafood Kitchen or The Cheesecake Factory, but neither was taking reservations, and both had 3+ hour waits when we arrived. Since we're not from Birmingham, we started calling around and checking TikTok. Southern Kitchen & Bar was the only place without a long wait, and it had been recommended by locals, so I was excited to finally try it. This is an updated review! I love their conecuh gumbo! I can't get enough of this. It's in a rich sauce. I wish it was a lil spicy but I use black pepper & hot sauce! Every time I visit Birmingham; it is on my must have meals list, surprisingly! The service is usually prompt and efficient! They pretty much know the routine with me! My gumbo; toast and a side of rice along with black pepper, hot sauce, water and a beer sometimes and let me be! It's at a bar which is cool but due to some injuries I can't sit in those high chairs so I prefer a regular seated chair! I just can't get enough of this place and the ladies may remember me; the quiet guy from Cali that's usually solo with unique manners and etiquette! So good and friendly. I was in town for work and met some friends there for dinner, OMG I'm so glad I did. We were taken care of by Trinity and she was great. Greeted us upon arrival, knew the answers to our food questions, had the perfect recommendations, and was the perfect amount of attentive. I had the chicken and dumplings for dinner, good lord they curled my toes. I don't know what the chefs did to it, it keep it up. They did have some entertainment that evening, which I'm usually not a fan of, but he was fantastic. He played the clarinet, had no singing, and it was perfect. The ambiance and service of this restaurant is solid. What is off are the cocktails and the food . I think if we had sat at the bar the drinks might have been better. My ranch water was anything but. I think probably tequila w marg mix. And no salt rim. I think the cosmopolitan was made with ocean spray cranberry juice ..... yikes. It was pretty crowded, but we were seated instantly, and the food came out pretty fast. I got a Caesar salad, which was a little too light on the dressing, with a side of their famous jalapeño honey fries. The salad was average, but the fries were great. My friend got the shrimp and grits (with Conecuh sausage and crispy onions) and it was fantastic. She said it was the best shrimp and grits she had ever had.
