Shiki is a place I have frequented often when staying in the nearby hotel. I have really liked everything we have tried there. My go-to is usually the Shiki fish. I love the sauce that comes with it! I have also had a great yuzu margarita there, which I would recommend if you want a cocktail! My most recent order was the Super Crunch Roll. I got this to go, and I picked it based off of previous Yelp reviews. It was delicious but didn't necessarily blow me away, especially for it to be ~$17. It left me feeling hungry, whereas I usually feel quite full from a sushi roll. They have a lovely outdoor patio for whenever the weather is nice. They do allow you to bring your dog to sit with you! Service can be hit or miss at times, but overall, we have had great experiences. They have a HH 4-6 Thursday-Sunday, which is nice if you can make it then. It includes 1/2 price appetizers, $5 cocktails (marg, mojito, cucumber collins, and mule), beer, wine, and sake. I attached the menu for this. We started off the crab angels which were some of the best I've had. They were crisped to perfection with the perfect ratio of cream cheese and crab. There are a lot of great apps that are half off during happy hour, and honestly you can't go wrong with any of them. I usually go for the Brussels sprouts and potstickers, but I also love the sweet potatoes and edamame. Also, they have really good ramen! Everyone that works there is always so nice and helpful. Shiki is one of my go-tos when friends are asking about restaurant recommendations. Located in Homewood, it is convenient to downtown, Vestavia and Mountain Brook residents. The ambiance is nice. Inside, they have a dreamy, cloud-like ceiling that is lit with changing colors, and outside their is a cozy seating area. The food is always good with plenty of choices. My husband loves their ramen, and I like all the different sushi rolls they offer as well as the Pad Thai. If you are looking for appetizers, I recommend any of their tempura items, the sweet potato being my favorite. It's a huge portion so I'm excited to eat it again tomorrow. The level of spice is perfect. My one year old ate tempura chicken and rice. The chicken was crispy and came with a sweet sauce. I also love the lamb curry!! It's pretty spicy so heads ups. Grab some coconut soup as an app or a salad. Their ginger dressing is the best in town. My friends and I have been coming to Shiki for years now but somehow I managed to never review them. Wow is all I can say to that ! On those past visits , we always enjoyed our experience. I was craving sushi after my massage so I decided to come here. I'm ALWAYS looking for somewhere low key and it was fairly early so they weren't too crowded as I suspected. I was immediately seated by a smiling gentleman. I opted for the patio since it was a beautiful Friday afternoon. The service was a little slow but it was lunch time and there appeared to not be many servers. Also , I was so torn on what I wanted to order so they likely were being nice by giving me more time. Or maybe they actually forgot about me! Lol. I finally decided on edamame and one sushi roll (see photos). I was pleased with my selections. The sushi was fresh and presented nicely. The edamame was good also. Even the flies wanted in on it! I managed to keep them away ... thankfully! I hate I wasn't able to enjoy any of their daily specials. We decided we were tired of hospital food and wanted something delivered that was different than we could have here, and being that my wife couldn't eat sushi for several months while pregnant, this sounded like a good idea to try out. We got the seafood stuffed avocado, which was absolutely worth the price of admission. It was very tasty, and I'll have it again anytime! Shiki is a really really sad excuse for Thai food and sushi. It is similar to Surin where there is massive amounts of sugar in EVERYTHING (including the sushi!) so if you like Thai food with your sugar this is your place. I've given it several chances since I want to like it, but it is just too Americanized to me. The curry didn't have any spice and just tastes like sugar coconut water. The pad see ew doesn't get cooked on a hot enough wok and has no flavor. There is mayo in every sushi roll even the plain basic ones. If you are white you would probably love this place. read more
