I stopped by for lunch on Friday since I hadn't been in a while. I got there right before they closed for the lunch shift and switched over to dinner. The soup was fire like always, but the chicken tasted a little old, which threw me off because that's not what I'm used to from them. I figured it was probably just because I got there late. I do believe I accidentally found The Best Happy Hour in Birmingham!! $3 beers. $4 apps. $11 meals! Spicy tuna roll, seaweed salad (Hayashi Wakame), sashimi appetizer, Pad Prik tofu, and creme brulee for dessert. The menu is huge! So is the restaurant. Surin is a frequent go-to when I'm craving flavor and spice. The lunch menu in particular is a decent value but limited selection (although many of my favorites are on there). Some of my favorite appetizers include the basil rolls, the chicken larb, and the Surin baskets. The basil rolls are fragrant and served with a delicious dipping sauce. The chicken larb is mildly spicy ground chicken served with cabbage leaves, and the portion is large enough to be an entree for one if you prefer that to a shareable appetizer. The Surin baskets are unique--little pastry cups filled with a mixture of minced shrimp and chicken with corn, onion, and cilantro then topped with a honey peanut cucumber sauce--the result is an explosion of flavor in your mouth, a perfect amuse-bouche to prime your expectations for the meal to follow. I have several favorite entrees that I typically stick with, depending on my mood. The spicy beef salad is nutritious, filling, and flavorful; I typically ask for it extra spicy. The chicken noodle bowl is great on a cold day. The pad prik is a spicy stir fry in which you choose your protein (chicken, pork, beef, shrimp, tofu). The chicken panang is a great spicy curry, but if you prefer non-spicy, stick with the masaman chicken, which is peanut-based. The Thai BBQ chicken is a large meal that some could split into two servings. Another special entree is the nom tok beef, which has a similar flavor to spicy beef salad but is served with rice and cabbage leaves. Depending on what you order, your meal may come with a cup of spicy coconut soup. This is worth ordering on its own, as it is a savory and flavorful bowl of comfort (and not actually very spicy). Surin also serves sushi, but it's nothing special. If I'm craving sushi I'm going somewhere else; I come to Surin for the fragrant flavors and spices of Thai-style cuisine. read more

This Surin is the sister restaurant [and I believe the precursor] of the Surin in Huntsville on Airport Road. I love the Airport Road location! The staff and eats are exceptional! Since sushi was always a "treat" back in the 90s, my best friend who lived around the corner on Highland Ave., always selected Surin West for her birthday celebration and Surin always kindly accommodated her party of 8-12-ish guests in one of their private rooms. And Surin accommodated the copious gifts we brought and never rushed us through our celebratory dinner. We come to Surin pretty regularly for lunch and have always enjoyed their food. Their chicken noodle bowl, barbecue chicken, and duck are some of our regular go-to. I always enjoy the coconut soup that comes with the lunch as well. Lunch price is reasonable for what you get. I cannot speak to their dinner menu as far as the food quality or the price since we never go for dinner.‍ I have been coming to Surin for years now and never left a review just because it's not new to us. However, I jumped on here to leave a review today to give a shout-out to the host, Josh. He is super friendly and helpful!! I asked for a more secluded table if possible (pandemic and all....) as the restaurant was pretty busy when I went in for lunch at 1 pm. He made the effort of moving a table for me to the corner, got hollered at by a waitress for moving the table not realizing he was being helpful, and just let the waitress' attitude slide right off of him. Great local spot in Birmingham for some authentic Thai cuisine. I think this spot perfectly balances elegant and casual dining. Lunch specials galore! I always suggest the Pad Thai but recently I have ventured out to the Spicy Beef Salad (not that spicy in my opinion for someone that doesn't handle spice well). In addition, they have a great happy hour selection! A great variety of wines and Asian-based spirits. This location has a parking lot in the back lot adjacent to the restaurant so you can always find a parking spot if the street gets busy. Lastly, they are great at accomodating large groups. I had a group of 15 people here for a birthday dinner and they were extremely helpful in adjusting a private room for everyone. The servers are professional and well-versed in their menus.
