(lunch) TENDERLOIN TIPS FONDUE Grilled tenderloin tips with smoked gouda in mashed potato "pot". $12 (lunch) Seasonally, the Eastside Grill is open for lunch around the Holidays. My partner and I stopped for lunch during one of these special days. Special indeed because they do not occur very often throughout the year and tables for lunch at this usually dinner-only very popular Northampton establishment fill very fast. After having the house gumbo and garden salads, we had the two entrees above. The chicken dish was quite bland which surprised us. I expected bigger sausage and bacon solids, actually bite-size pieces, than the bits that appeared in the tomato cream sauce. That and the herb crusting did nothing to make this appetizing. It was presented well enough but we cannot say much more that would make us endorse this quite bland, undistinguished dish. The tenderloin tips were reasonably tasty as was the mashed potatoes covered in melted gouda, however the temperature was tepid and one could tell it had been awaiting serving. (The melted cheese was beginning to set and the meat was cooling fast.) Both entrees were served with two spears of asparagus suggesting the chef was a fan of the Mikado. We then ordered two desserts: chocolate mousse cheesecake (very nice, lovely crust) and Key lime pie (another nice crust but needed more lime, please!). This is one of the top eating establishments in Northampton and I must admit I was a little let down from my last visit a couple of years ago; even for lunch, I expected their usual quality. I knew there would be a lunch rush and there was. However, we arrived at 11:40am and did not leave until almost two hours later. Fortunately, I had no pressing engagement, so I was fascinated in how the very pleasant server was able to serve others quicker who arrived after us and who left before we did. It almost seemed there was a kind of selection process that I was ignorant of. Yes, I would certainly visit Eastside Grill again. But I did not see it at it's peak this time. read more

I was pleasantly surprised...I've had the Gorgonzola garlic bread since I was a kid, and they've had the The Taste of Northampton. Taylor was our waitress tonight, she was upbeat, happy and didn't rush you....she also seemed like she had a humorous personality. Lots to chose from on the menu, everything is made in house and fresh. We tried the catfish for an appetizer, and had the sirloin with candied bacon and Gouda cheese...DELICIOUS! Enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing dinner with my wife. We both had the Delmonico steak, which were prepared exactly as ordered and very tasy, I had mine with Bernaise sauce and she had the Horseradish sauce, both very good. My Lemon Drop Martini was perfect and came with the shaker for about 3/4 of a drink more. The Lemon Honey Vinaigrette was amazing and the Gorganzola Ranch was very good also. Waitresses have a fairly basic job to do, take your order and bring it to you. One would think that concept is fairly simple but not for our waitress at the Eastside Grill last night. However, that wasn't the beginning of the nightmare dining experience. It took almost 40 minutes for our first waitress to bring us waters and well over an hour for orders to be taken. Some time later our third waitress came back to tell us that the kitchen was out of the tuna I had ordered and I needed to pick a different entree. "K" stated she would be back to take my order. Another hour later, when the meals arrived for the three other people at my table I asked her why she put a salad in front of me since I hadn't yet ordered anything to eat. She just looked at me with a dumb expression on her face. I reminded her that she forgot to come back and take my order. Since we were entering hour 3, and it was near closing time, there was no longer enough time to make me a meal. My dining companions ate while I watched. Good thing I started that diet two days ago. We ordered Gorgonzola garlic bread, which was slightly over cooked but tasty. One order is big enough to share with two people. That, and the ice water, were the two best tasting things out of the whole meal. The other appetizer was the calamari which was very bland. It only came with one dipping sauce which was a tasteless marinara. My friend had a shrimp dish over pasta which she had a hard time chocking down. After several bites she gave up. When "K" later asked if she wanted it wrapped to take home, her response was a quick no. Our male guest had steak, which was undercooked, mashed potatoes, just no, and three...count them, three limp pieces of asparagus. The last meal was jambalaya which looked fantastic on the plate. After returning to the Northampton area, I was anxious to try the Eastside Grill for two reasons. First, it was my favorite restaurant when I lived in Amherst in the 1980s and 1990s. Second, recent reviews on yelp have been mediocre, and a number of reviewers have suggested it is a shadow of its former self. So I have tried the Eastside Grill twice since returning to Northampton, most recently two days ago during Restaurant Week, and found it to be as good as I can remember. Both the food and service were excellent; in fact, the service on both occasions was better than anything I encountered in the Boston area in 13 years there. During my most recent visit, I had a watermelon gazpacho, scallops with porcini mushrooms, and a praline/blonde brownie sundae and only $25 during restaurant week. The dishes were creative, prepared perfectly, and the portion sizes reasonable. The bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand was excellent and reasonably priced. read more

Seventeen years ago, this was an excellent restaurant, but over the past decade our dinners there have ranged from almost decent to dreadful. so every now and then I go back hoping it will have gotten better. Alas, it hasn't. We had eaten there a few weeks ago at 5 PM on a Thursday. My lobster and corn chowder was watery and tasteless, but my companion liked his tomato seafood chowder. The salads were greens straight out of the bag with no other vegetable but a thin slice of onion. (huh???). The bread served was gummy and too sweet. That time I had the crawfish etoufee which was spicy and full of fresh, sweet crawfish. Quite good. My companion had what was billed as steak tenderloin with bacon, but the bacon was more like bacon bits and the tenderloin overcooked and covered with a gluey sauce. Blah. For dessert the water carbonized a creme brulee announcing as he served it that he's overdone it and then leaving us to eat the blackened chunks of carbon that decorated it. We were too tired to complain but didn't finish it. So yesterday we went back (yeah, I know, but we are so desperately looking for some nice place to eat in Northampton at this price point and I had liked the crawfish dish.) We had a hint of what was to come when we walked in at 5:30 and told the hostess that we were waiting for another person. She snarled that they never seated incomplete parties and when queried told us it was quite possible there would be no tables left when our companion arrived. Her tone suggested she could care less. At that point I should have followed my instincts and gone down the street to another restaurant. But sadly, I didn't. To keep things short, this time the crawfish were NOT fresh but had that flavor cooked seafood gets when it sits in the fridge too long. There was no hint of spice in the sauce. I had a pork and black bean soup which was served in a very small cup 1/2 of which was filled with rice. There was little trace of beans and one chunk of pork. Nasty. It took forever for our entrees to arrive. My one companion had what was billed as "pork shank." I had warned that this sounded highly suspicious, but he ordered it anyway and got something that looked a lot like a pot roasted fresh picnic shoulder (the cheapest cut of pork available.) Since we were treating he didn't say anything about the flavor, but the lack of praise was notable. My other companion who was treating us had an encrusted chicken that was supposed to have 5 different kinds of peppercorns, but he said it had no pepper flavor at all. It looked a lot like fried chicken tenders to me. He later said it was mediocre. I asked the waitress not to carbonize the creme brulee this time so it was pretty good. My companion's "molton chocolate cake" had an unpleasant texture and not much chocolate taste. Our third companion was silent about his Key Lime Pie. So that's it for the East Side Grill for a few more years. The place was packed (which is why we dined so unfashionably early), confirming my belief that most people have no clue what high quality restaurant food should taste like. read more

File this under family-friendly upscale. Consider it a fourth-rate Legal Seafoods. Most entrees are $20. I ordered "Sesame Crusted Scallops with Lobster in Sake-Scallion sauce". Sounds delicious. The scallops and lobster were clearly previously frozen. In fact, the 'lobster', if that's what it was, could have easily been artificial crabstick since that's what it tasted like. The 'sesame crust' consisted of a dash of sesame seeds sprinkled on the final dish. In the right hands, this dish could have been amazing. Instead, it reminded me of Stouffer's frozen meals at your local grocery store. My friend had some sort of allegedly high quality steak which clearly was an extremely cheap cut. He left half of it unfinished. Eastside is what you expect to see nowadays - food-service type restaurants that think putting fancy names on the menu bumps them up to four stars. I'll also say that the waitstaff was the type you'd see at your local diner. One would expect to see bright-eyed articulate attractive college students, considering the location. read more

Before I moved to L.A. we dined here quite often, and the food was decent, but began to decline in quality. We heard there were new owners, and returned last week to check it out in hopes the food would be better. I hate to say it, they are still up to their old tricks. The menu sounds delicious and wonderful but the food simply falls flat. They are over priced for the quality, plain and simple. For $18 I was served a meager portion of risotto in too much broth, a scrap of lobster, and 5 shrimp. All 4 of us felt like our respective meals were a total rip off, and they were all served cold. Also, all 4 martinis were poorly made, with a dirty martini that was so briny it had to be sent back. I just don't get the appeal or the lines, this place pales in comparison to nearly every other restaurant in Northampton. read more

This was our first time and we were delighted with the food. I had seafood risotto. Most places you get lots of risotto and a few pieces of shrimp buried in the risotto. Not here. It actually was a sweet pea risotto on one corner of the plate and a mound of seafood in a tasty sauce on the rest of the plate. The seafood included crawfish that had been cooked perfectly. My wife also said her dish was great. The downside was that alot of people also liked their food. When we were seated I didn't see an empty table. The parking lot was full as was all the nearby on street parking. I ended up in a lot a couple of blocks away. The service was a little slower than I would have liked but the place was packed. Today I also posted on another famous review site. I mentioned someone who picked up my check on a past visit, and said it was probably because he was annoyed by my lingering. It was great that he did this and I should not make such assumptions, it was a kind gesture and I am thankful and appreciative. There are a fair number of customers there I hear complaining about silly little things, that their napkin did not massage them properly or that angels did not jump out of the salad and serenade them or something! I am being colorful, and not literal of course, but some here both at this site and at that place do seem like their greatest pleasure is complaining. I do my fair share of it as well, but never for example rate a place 3 stars or less if I liked/loved the food and service was good to great, there would really have to be something seriously wrong for me to go that far. Some too fussy fancy pants I guess. I waxed not so poetically about some patron that stared and glared at me, but the food was fine and that is all that should really matter in any review, and the service if it was exceptional or terrible. Service was neither but better than not ,although some head guy I saw before but never encountered directly had to refill my water. The gumbo was good at first, great by the end. The fish and chips yeah some fine diner I am trying to get my bill to be less than 20, ended up 24 with an overly generous tip but either that or be a miser and I don't want to be like that. So food is always very good, occasionally a little off in some ways but always comes through when returning. I certainly would recommend this place for the most part. My bros favorite place, he can't get enough of it, and I can't think of a better place off hand either. Went here as Sierra Grill had a 2 hour wait (because its good) and have not been before so figured i would suggest going here. Only a 20 minute wait without a reservation, but the place was packed, they were turning tables over very fast. So the place looked promising. The decor is fairly modern and the dining room is setup so that you like theres not as many people as there are. the different tiers block your view, but if you actually look around its busy and on the loud side. The wait service is fairly speedy, but unattendive once they get your food order. Food came somewhat quick for the volume of orders they had, but not for the easy to prepare meals they have. I ordered the East Side steak, which was very dry but i ordered it blackened to add a kick of spice which was decent but overall disappointing. On the side were roasted potatoes which tasted like they've been under heat lamps since noon and squash which was really watery. The rest of my party had seafood, which is probably the way to go. The ravioli came with mussels, shrimp and scallops which were all pretty good, but the fish dish at the table was another disappointment as it comes on a mound of boring rice with not enough sauce. Bottom line is that its not worth going to eat food that can be made a home. I would suggest ordering seafood or even try the duck as that caught my attention and itsnt something i would prepare at home. read more

My husband and I went here for our first anniversary on Monday night. We were seated right away and drinks were brought to us quickly. Our server was very nice, attentive, and had a great sense of humor. She joked with us a lot. I ordered one of the drinks on the menu with the pear vodka and apple cider. It was just the perfect amount of sweetness without being overbearing. We also got sweet potato chips and spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer. The chips were great: crunchy and cold and not too salty. The dip was good but I wished it was a warm dip. For dinner, I got the butternut squash ravioli which was good. I would have given it 4 stars 2 years ago. My husband and I are regulars here - every anniversary, valentine's day and we were engaged here. We even have a few servers who know our names. We love the food, they always do the steaks exactly right. It's casual enough for jeans, but not a bad setting for a dressy night, too. That being said, they recently changed their no-reservations policy. On our usual Valentine's date, I walked in to put our name on the list, as usual on v-day, expecting a 2 hour wait, during which we could walk around town, have a drink or two, then return. I was agast to discover that the foyer was empty and half the tables were empty. And I was told they were booked solid for the night, due to reservations we didnt know we needed. What!? I think the reservations policy will hurt them. This was the 1st valentine's day in about a decade that we didnt come to Eastside, even though we tried to. Anyway, the food is still good and a great value, I just feel a little less regular--ish now. read more

I feel obliged to write a review as I went here on a whim with my girlfriend after getting a $50 mail in rebate with my new phone. We knew nothing about the place when we went on in and were able to snag a table right away with no waiting. I had this amazing crawfish entre that was only $17 and my girlfriend got this chicken dish (whose name eludes me) that was quite great. For reference as to how good the food is here, my girlfriend can't stand seafood but she loved my meal. It's good food, quite exotic considering how reserved western mass can be and very very well priced. I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

Ok, so I might not be from around here, but I know this place does NOT deserve 2 and a half stars. (I'm from South Florida.. So I know good food!) The lobster and corn chowder and the seafood chowder/gumbo were delish, and both FULL of meat!!! The roasted duck with the cranberry relish and fried mash potatoes was amazing, and the shrimp al fresco (shrimp pasta with Brie) was good too, however overshadowed by the duck which, again, was superb! It didn't end there either.. My table ordered the apple crisp, new orleans bread pudding, and the maple creme brûlée for dessert. The apple crisp was on the dull side, but the other two...Wow!!!! UR-INE FOR AN EXPERIENCE! Well, where to start . . . 4 of us dined at Eastside last night and we'll never go back again. The waitress was curt and became unfriendly when 2 in our party indicated that they only wanted salad and an appetizer, and no entre. Shortly thereafter we became aware of an unmistakable urine smell emanating from beneath our table (which was on the lower level near the front window). The taste of our meals were, shall we say, "uneventful" -- unless you count the fact that my wife spent the night vomiting and I and another dining companion both had "stomach issues" for the rest of the evening as the 4 of us sat through a play at Smith College. We Sat down very quickly for our meal and our server Angelica (who is the best) at the table when we sat down gave us water and asked what we liked to drink and made some recommendations. We had dinner here a couple of nights ago on a Saturday. Dinner on Sat. nights is first come, first served, which was no problem as we got there just when they opened at 4:00. Our meals were excellent. My husband got the sesame shrimp with lobster and sake, and liked it very much. He said the sesame-encrusted shrimp had a very nice flavor, and he felt there was a nice balance with the lobster. The honey-lemon dressing on his salad was a nice change from the usual salad dressings at other restaurants. I got the tenderloin tips and scallops but not blackened (spicy) as the menu offers. The tenderloin was done perfectly and was, indeed, very tender and flavorful. The scallops were also done to perfection and very clean without the occasional bit of sand I've found in scallops I've ordered other places. They were juicy and fork tender and tasted very fresh. They came with deliciously creamy buttermilk mashed potatoes and broccoli. Usually the broccoli I get at restaurants is either overcooked mush or so hard that it needs to be cut with a steak knife. Even the vegetable was perfectly cooked. The service was fast, efficient, and very friendly. Our waitress Caitlyn (sp?) was most helpful and welcoming. Sad to see such a low rating. I've gone here about twice a year for the last three years, and it still contends for my favorite restaurant in Northampton (in which I live). Staff is fine, drinks are fine, food is great. The gorgonzola bread is a fantastic starter, and one of my favorite entrees is the steak topped with gouda fondue and candied bacon. DO NOT GO!!!!!!! I had hoped to have a great dinner tonight (New Years Eve). Instead it was the worst. Where to start? 1. The coffee was so weak, when I added milk it turned almost white. 2. I ordered a half doz. Shucked oysters, 5 of the 6 had shells in them. And 3. I ordered the stuffed lobster tail and fillet mignon. Honest To GOD the stuffing was no more than a slice of white bread soaked in water. I told my server as I tasted each one of these and barely got a "sorry" from him.
