I am still thinking about the strawberry rhubarb mule cocktail I had at HighBrow during my visit in May. My husband and I stopped in during a dreary, chilly May Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere was vibrant and friendly. A bit loud, but encouraging to see how bustling the restaurant was. I enjoyed my grilled caesar salad. I added chicken so it was a bit pricey for a lunch salad, but it was tasty and I always appreciate when caesar salads include anchovies, as they're meant to! My husband liked his rigatoni bolognese. Service was excellent. Our server was very apologetic about how long things were taking, but with a full house it honestly just felt like a good pace without any excessive waiting. I am only giving 5 stars because I can't give 10! My dad surprised me by coming all the way from Brazil for my son's graduation. He had just gone through surgery, so I was very concerned about him walking around too much around campus and decided we would try to go eat at a quiet place . Since everything was very last minute, I had no dinner reservation and was getting worried. I called just 2 days before graduation and, even though they were completely booked, Andrew, the owner, told me, "Give me a few minutes." He kept checking and checking until he got us a table! He was incredibly kind and accommodating. Of course, with all the graduation chaos, we ended up running late. I called to apologize, and the hostess was so sweet and reassuring, saying, "It's okay! We'll have a table for you and your family." Our server, John, was the best! Everyone was wonderful -- the servers, chefs, literally everyone. The food was absolutely delicious. The chicken parm was amazing and such a generous portion. The salmon was to die for, and the risotto that came with it was cooked perfectly. The pasta and meatballs were sooo good and also a great portion. I had the prosciutto pizza and, believe me when I say, I ate the WHOLE thing! The salad just ok. The pizza bread was light and flavorful. The rigatoni was yummy. We've been coming for about four years every time we are in town for a show. The food is special. And they have vegan options. My husband always gets the sticky rubs and just loves them. I tried their tofu sticky "ribs" and the were the best tofu I've ever had. The winter salad was scrumptious which we shared. And my husband also very much enjoyed his pizza. Thin crust crispy well done but not burnt and not too much cheese to make it soggy. We wish we lived closer we would come every week! read more

There is very little not to love here. The server/bartender Cherie was freaking awesome. She was friendly, quick to help us, recommending delicious drinks. The food didn't even have a chance to touch the counter before it was in her hand being delivered to us. As someone who is gluten intolerant, this place has SO many amazing options, including a variety of wood fired pizzas. The vibe is eclectic, but cozy. Tried it a year ago with disappointing results, but decided to give them another chance. We asked not to be seated by the window as the restaurant did not seem to have its air conditioning on. Despite a near empty restaurant , we were seated in the window. Does where are you go for pizza in Northampton matter? If you like wood-fired pizza, the thin type with lots of varieties of delicious toppings, then it does. This is where you should go. It may seem small on the outside, but there is a downstairs and an entire side room where there is seating. There's also the opportunity to eat outside in the alley when it is nicer out, and you will receive the same prompt service. I have never had a pizza I did not like here, and perhaps that's because I truly enjoy this truffle mushroom pizza that they have. Any pizza shop that offers more than pepperoni and your basic vegetables for toppings is a place that cares about how your food tastes. This is not deniable. How many times do you get the same pizzas over and over again that taste the same because they use the same basic ingredients, maybe with a better cheese, maybe with a better crust, but really the same kind of thing? That is why I like coming here to eat. You can be surrounded by the deliciousness of the baking of the pizzas, they have delightful cocktails that match the seasons, and lots of good homemade desserts that they rotate. If you look at some of the other pizza places that have come and gone, (and some of them were also good), it just goes to show that being original is what people want from their food. If you are away from home and having a good time, why would you order the same food that you would normally order for home take out? Have fun, and eat good food out! read more

We were dining today with a gift coupon from the fall when service was exceptionally poor. I will say that Highbrow now has the renewed energy it needs since the other restaurant closed. We had the fava bean hummus with what according to the menu should have been grilled chicory but was actually radicchio (equally delicious substitute). Everything came out warm and freshly prepared including the grilled bread- this is how it should be done. Sesame ahi tuna also tasty but the wasabi aioli could have used more wasabi. So wanted to revisit this place as last summer was a good experience, which we revisited a couple of times. Totally different this year. I ordered the sticky ribs appetizer. The taste of the ribs was good, but they clearly weren't cooked today, as the meat was very soft. There is a difference in soft vs tender ribs- these were soft. I also ordered a green salad, the dressing was very thick, but the taste was okay. It was a bit tart for balsamic but palatable. The salad was mostly greens with one cherry tomato (cut in half). My husband ordered the fish and chips. The fish came right out of the fire, somewhat overcooked but the chips (fries) had no heat on them at all. The coleslaw was completely tasteless. Our companion ordered the combo pizza- it had no flavor to it and there was no sauce or cheese...aren't those the main ingredients in pizza? They also had a Caesar salad. Two of us also had a cocktail from the daily special menu. They were okay. We also had a Diet Coke and a lemonade which was weak. Altogether our combined checks came to $130... this was not commensurate with our experience, not even close. The service was severely lacking. Our waitress clearly did not want to be there. We ordered drinks and she brought water to the table upon seating us. Never came back to see if we wanted refills or to check on us at all. We had asked for 2 checks and she only brought 1. She then came back to see which salads we each had. There were dirty dishes stacked on the table. She came to the table 5 times without ever picking them up. My wife and I decided to visit Highbrow for a Sunday lunch. Was greeted warmly and sat in the dining room with a nice view of the open kitchen. It wasn't busy at all with a few at the bar and maybe one other occupied table. While we pondered the menu I was looking around and noticed how dirty the place was. Not sure if the staff the night before was shorthanded or what but bits of food and debris were not only on the floor but on some of the chairs. Not really appealing. Also the other issue I had was the wait staff who seemed intent on twirling their long hair with fingers which was not tied back. It's like they were bored. The teeny bobber music playing was also really odd. It's like I was at a roller skating rink not a dining room. The food was very good. We had the sticky ribs, meatball pizza and a combo pizza. No complaints with the food. Not rushing back until they train the staff how to use the vacuum and possibly refresh them on hair restraint. read more

I really enjoyed this location. It's the first time that I've been to it. I don't live in Northhampton, but it would be a stopping point if I get back there. We visited this place on 12.31.23. Had to sit at the bar which was fine with us. The bartender was fairly attentive. The atmosphere was very good, and everybody was so social and enjoyable to talk to at the bar. We just ordered a pizza and it was plenty for both of us. The style of pizza is thin crust and it's cooked in a brick oven as per the name. I'm going to guess that you should call for a reservation if you want to be seated. Of course we were there on New Year's Eve as mentioned, so seating was impossible, except they do have open seating at the bar, which was our saving grace. read more

I recommend the Chicken Parmesan and also the Fish & Chips. I love to get an order of Mac & Cheese off the Sides offerings. Service started well on a busy farmers market night in Noho and given we'd come once before, I was hopeful. There were tables open when we were seated and several remained infilled while we were there. Having reviewed the website, I had high hopes. We ordered apps and said we'd place several smaller orders since the tables are tight. Our server said she appreciated that, but it didn't go well. After nearly two hours we were still waiting and finally and asked for it to be boxed. The fried Motz was disappointing: from an oil soaked breading to not even warm Motz, this mainstay should shine and it sinks - quite literally in oil and then a sponge for the tomato sauce. From a poor execution to plating - skip it. The calamari was ok. Better than the Motz, but I can't recommend it. The kids Mac and cheese was good. We ordered it and then ordered it again bc the Motz and calamari were so disappointing. Pizzas were ordered in 3 batches: Bianca and Margherita; then the Burrata Caprese Salad (cause it's Aug in Western MA,) Margherita, and finally White Primavera. Bianca - the arugula was bright and peppery, but lacked the cheese base, this too was underwhelming. Margherita - this classic should be exceptional in August; it wasn't. Primavera w/white sauce - I've run out of steam and nothing merits mention. Skip it. read more

Had dinner at HighBrow while visiting UMASS for a lacrosse tournament. The staff was friendly & the restaurant was nice. It was incredibly hot (I know, it's summer!), but it definitely could use some moving air - so just be aware. (I was a career waitress for 20+ years so I am aware that it's difficult to balance a hot kitchen with the restaurant in summer). The wings were outstanding!!!! I wish we had ordered 2!! They were cooked to perfection & the sauce was delicious! I had the Bianca pizza and to be honest I don't think you can go wrong with any wood fire pizza there! It was great! My daughter got the Not Your Mamas Mac & Cheese and loved it. My husband ordered the Steak Frites and wasn't thrilled. The pizza crust was very bland, and could use a higher quality flour. Unfortunately, the marinara tasted like the can that the tomatoes come from. The salad was a simple arugula base topped with a very nice Gorgonzola. The pappardelle had a delicious flavor, though very oily and the pasta was over-cooked. It's worth it to mention that the server was very kind. Overall, a nice place for drinks and the restaurant smells heavenly and garlicky, but sadly that doesn't translate to the food. read more
