Tbh, I was nervous about the 2.5 star review. It was DELISH! Idk why it's rated so low. We started with chicken wings and crab rangoons. The wings were so good and the crab rangoons were crispy. I got the beef pho, which was delicious. My mom got some type of curry and her boyfriend got Singapore noodles. We kept saying how surprised we were at the reviews, because it was really good! The server was great. She was on top of everything. The food was average at best. Ordered a PuPu platter and the fried wontons were cold. The egg rolls were old. Everything seemed to be maxed days in advance. Not the freshest. Ribs were very good tho. Ordered a scorpion bowl. This was the first time in forever. I had a scorpion bowl that was not served in a scorpion bowl... No center shot in the bowling. It was decent, but disappointing. This is a bit sad because the atmosphere is really nice. This has been a restaurant that has stood out to me many and many times when driving down route one. I have wanted to try it out and today was finally the day. I didn't even realize the overall rating until we had already sat down and ordered. So, was hoping it would impress me more than the average would make me believe. If you can tell, based off my 4 stars I believe they deserve a higher rating. I do not believe it to be the best Asian restaurant and by no means is it the worst either. Service was extremely quick and our waiter was friendly! Granted, it was not busy at all considering it is non-tourist season. We received our cocktails and food right after before we even tried a sip! No complaints about that! Another huge plus was both drinks were under $10 which I think is hard to find nowadays. I enjoyed their Shark Tooth and my wife got their Sloe Gin Fizz and both were tasty. My wife then got the pork lo mein lunch combo while I got the General Tso's lunch combo and both were perfect sized portions. The overall vibe/ambiance makes you think Asian cuisine that is also a smidge more upscale than your typical local Asian restaurant. In the end I would say look past the average rating and give this spot a try. It may not blow your socks off but for the price I found it very much worth it! Our waitress was fun and way over worked last night with only two on things were slow Fun festive atmosphere The food was hot when it arrived but the order was not followed we asked for some dishes spiced and others not the three of the four that came were all spiced too much and the forth when it came was not spiced at all , I guess the kitchen was over worked on a Friday night . My first and last visit there. Ordered a Thai dish advertised as containing veggies with shrimp, scallops and fish. Sounded good. Instead of fish, they substituted calamari, (which they apparently tried to pawn off as fish), which was inedible with a texture like rubber bands. Wow. This place is a freaking mansion. The statues out front, the fish tank inside, the spiral staircases. It's magnificent. The carpet is straight out of a movie. But, the food is out of this world. We have been in Maine for about 3 hours, and instead of eating a lobster (yet) because I didn't see one in the tank, we decided Chinese food in the state furthest away from our home. We shared the General Tso chicken, with an egg roll and pork fried rice. We also got the Chicken Hong Kong style chow mein. And woah. Just hold on. That pork, so pink, so sweet, so flavorful. The pig wasn't even upset because he got put into a food so good. The General Tso, perfect breading, lovely sauce, great chicken. The chow mein, basically the star of the show. It's hard to find HK style noodles that really hit just right. You have to get the perfect blend of soggy, and crispy, with either a veggie or a protein. If you can make that bit, you've won the game of life. Spoiler alert, we made that bite time and time over. The chicken is fantastic. I could cut it with a spoon. I loved everything about this place, including the backhanded fortunes that came out of the cookies. The one and only downside, they don't have sweet and sour pork any longer apparently. Which is unfortunate because the pork was a hit, and sweet & sour pork is a STAPLE. It's obvious why they've won a bunch of food awards. This place is killer. This place is about to go under in my opinion, they have a sushi bar but no sushi chef. We got there at 5 pm and only had two tables seated, should have been a clue. I ordered fried wontons for an app and got what I ordered, fried wontons, no meat in the middle. That's like ordering nachos and getting plain chips, no toppings, no cheese, no salsa. Wife ordered pineapple chicken, was a soupy mess, super sweet, literally had 15 chunks of green onion and 3 red chunks. If the plate weighed 2 lbs served , after the chicken was eaten from it, there was still 1.75 lbs of slop left on plate . I had general Tso's combo, barely any fried rice with it but taste of Tso's was ok. Our waiter was brand new, both to waiting tables and the English language. A table next to us that was seated halfway thru our service asked for a spoon and our server had no idea what that was. He brought back a serving spoon the size of a ladle . Crab Rangoon burnt and tasteless. Egg roll and chicken finger the only edible bite. We called and got half our money back. The food went in the trash. What a disappointment. We were starving. Second they at this spot. It is right down the road from school and I love soup. First visit was a disaster. Hoping to have a better experience this time....dissatisfied 1 hot and sour soup. Meh...marginal. I get better from my local take out spot for $2 vs $5 2 crab rangoon super sweet. It's like they added sugar to the filling. They must have. Tastes like cheesecake. No sign of crab or anything other than sugar and cream cheese 3 egg roll Such a basic in chinese asian take out. This was ok bit had a flavor of cinnamon? Weird combo. I can eat the worst of egg rolls but left this one after a few bites 4 pork ribs overcooked and dry, lots of gristle and grease. Second time this place fails basic lunch. Wont return. Save your money and find a different spot. Better chinese Thai Asian eats elsewhere ETA definitely wont be back. So here's an example of me being happy I didn't listen to some of the reviews posted on here. So I've been wanting to try the buffet for quite some time but haven't had the opportunity until this year on our trip to Maine. I've eaten at the restaurant a few times and have always enjoyed my meal. So I chose my experience over the negative buffet reviews I read and went on Sunday. Glad I did. The food was phenomenal. The choices were plenty. All items were fresh and quickly replaced when low. Me and my wife could not have been more pleased with the visit. So I HIGHLY recommend if your reading this to ignore the previous comments about their buffet and give it a try. read more

It was disgusting. The night I ordered they had no sushi. We placed the order anyways . When I picked it up they said they had no eggplant. Had to wait around while they offered something else to prepare. One couple that left was leaving upset idk why. The food we got was okay but I'd not recommend this place unless you like greasy spoon Chinese. What we did get seemed to have MSG since it made everyone lethargic after eating it. If you were considering spending your money on sushi at East Restaurant - think again. We ordered three rolls tonight, East Roll, Boston Maki Roll and Honolulu Roll and received these. (Please see the fire stick for size reference) The rolls taste fine? The fish could be a bit fresher, but the roll size is just mind blowing. We were on a mini vacation in Ogunquit in August and drove by this restaurant. I loved the facade so decided we would have dinner there that night. Got there around 6pm. Not too many cars in the parking lot. I loved the interior. They had a gift shop on the second floor but it was roped off and a sign said it was permanently closed. We were seated right away (2 of us) and a server came over immediately, gave us menus and took our drink order. I asked for a pot of tea but the server seemed confused. Most Chinese restaurants automatically bring a pot of tea with small tea cups. He said he could bring me a cup of hot water and a tea bag, I said that would be fine but I was confused. Then I heard him asking where the tea bags were, LoL. A group came in after us and sat behind us, they also asked for a pot of tea; not sure if they got it. Over all the food was good. They offer Chinese, Thai and Japanese. The server was attentive. I would go again. read more

Went here on a recent trip to Maine and was disappointed. Buffet was "closing" at 6p, was told no new food would be brought out. Most of the food tastes like day old Chinese food, EXTREMELY salty. Tried a variety from the buffet and didn't make it through more than a couple bites. Ended up leaving and going elsewhere. read more

The other people who left these reviews are HATERS!! First, we had a great waitstaff! The waitresses were super professional even when there was a FIRE in the kitchen! Second, THE FOOD! Honestly, just the sauce on the Chinese Broccoli would make it worth going back. So freaking good. The housemade duck sauce in the syrup dispenser almost made me fall out of my chair laughing, and then fall out of my chair again because the sauce was so tasty. You could even taste how fresh the egg rolls were! Third, go there just for the ambience. This was one of the cutest, most random places I've ever been to! It's basically an old Victorian mini-mansion converted into a fancy Chinese restaurant/bar. Worst meal we've had in years: While we have eaten many times at East, with varying levels of satisfaction, we were appalled at how bad the food was at their New Year's Eve buffet. If the intent was to charge as high a price as possible ($28/person) for cheap, low quality food, they were successful. Four of us--my wife, myself and our son and daughter-in-law--looked forward to a relaxed evening of dining. Given the price we certainly expected a gourmet selection of Chinese drinks, appetizers and entrees. Instead we received the opposite. It started with a Scorpion bowl where the bartender must must have forgotten to add rum. At the buffet table we got items such as egg rolls without meat that were roughly half the size of their usual menu offering; dumplings that were doughy and inedible; sushi rolls with more rice than filling; tasteless hot and sour soup; and a very limited array of entrees, many of which had small shrimp and not much else. The shrimp and calamari dish had none of the latter, the lo-mein was veggie only and thus mostly flavorless. Anything that might have required an additional expense--e.g. broccoli with beef or chicken or pepper steak--were not offered. Topping it all off was terrible service. We had to ask for our dishes to be cleared each time we visited the buffet table. Needless to say our disappointment was such that we will never eat at East again read more

Finding good Chinese food in Maine is like trying to find a palm tree in Alaska...but alas, there's at least one. On a trip to Ogunquit with my Asian mom, who admittedly can't go more than 24 hrs without craving rice or the smell of ginger and garlic, we searched near and far for said smells, and landed on East. Not only did they deliver food-wise, they were super polite and were spot on with service. They did cater some of the dishes to suit the more Asian palate (add that extra garlic and throw in some more exotic fare) my mom has, which was really above and beyond what we could've asked for. Notably, the place itself is impeccably clean (no gross dirty carpets and soap grime on utensils typical of Chinatown spots), and just the right amount of Chinese decor that's kind of charming vs tacky. Asian mom-approved, which usually only comes with straight A's and a doctoral degree :P. read more

I can't tell you how much I miss "Dining In" at this great restaurant. Yes, the takeout food is great and we should all support our favorite restaurants during Covid but when and if things get back to normal don't miss a chance to "Dine In" here. We were looking for somewhere quick and easy and decided after many years of coming to Wells that we would give the East Restaurant a try. First, we tried to get a pizza (another review to follow) and was told that it would be at least a 90 minute wait. We were not disappointed. We ordered a few appetizers and an order of fried rice and everything was great. And we didn't have to wait very long for our order. I felt that everything was prepared fresh. The 2nd star is for our lovely server. She was fabulous and attentive. The food is greasy, almost as if the frying oil is old. This used to be the best Chinese food around. Regretfully it is no longer great but I had to find out for myself. Friends told me do not eat there. Have cocktails as they are wonderful but not the food. I did listen to some extend but ordered two appetizers. The fried shrimp were ok but the crab rangoon was not good. Awesome restaurant! Came here for my graduation dinner back in May and it did not disappoint! The decor was very fancy and pretty. The food portions were very generous, delicious, and our waitress, Emma, was very funny, friendly, and outgoing! Loved her sense of humor! At first, they forgot to bring out my entree, but eventually brought it out later. It was worth the wait! Would love to come back sometime soon! Really cool place! read more

All the employees treated my party terribly. Watching over us and we could hear them talking and whispering about us. One of us put our medicine in water to take before eating and they took it away because they thought it was alchohol. Our food tasted terrible. Do not go here! read more
