Not only the best sushi in the Wells/Ogunquit area, but some of the best sushi I've had ever. I got a roll and a Poké bowl. Both were fresh and delicious. BYOB which I kinda liked more than ordering an overpriced drink. Service was amazing too - the owner (whose name is escaping me right now) really had a nice conversation with us and we got a little history about the restaurant and his experience with Poké/Sushi. The spot is on the smaller size so don't expect to walk in with a party of 5 or more without a reservation or call ahead. I would highly recommend Black sushi house for anyone visiting/living in the area and looking for a sushi fix. I will be back! read more

This place is amazing very fresh food as the owner who is also a cook said "we get it fresh off the boat every time, I get it myself. They make the food right In front of you and they are very funny and make the food 10 times better. They also had a chef that spoke no English and he made the food perfectly. Mediocre at best. Very average sushi. All of the salads had old wilted greens. No dressing on one of them. Oh well. C'est la vie.

I've had countless restaurant experiences, and this will live in my mind as THE worst, viral-worthy, one. I eat out a LOT (and have an embarrassing number of Yelp reviews to show for it), and this is by far the WORST spectacle of behavior put on by an owner (who incidentally doubled as chef during a relatively empty night for this particular establishment, while nearby restaurants were busy - clearly struggling). Remember every single viral instance in which a restaurant owner lashes out at an individual or the public, a la Amy's Baking Company on Kitchen Nightmares? Well, this night I witnessed just that - unfolding before my eyes. And I don't use these words lightly. There will be forgivable bad nights. But this night was not such a night. It was a whirlwind disaster of everything you DON'T do in the service industry. So what happened? My friend sent back a roll that was highly recommended by the server ("Our most popular item"), which turned out to be ill-prepared and not remotely of the caliber expected by the price tag. She ordered another sushi roll in its stead, then when we wrapped up dinner she went to pay the bill. The owner charged her for both rolls. The first one, she had only taken 2 bites of - 1 from herself, another from a friend at our table to try as a sanity check. This was sent back, and the 2nd roll was charged as well. Now is maybe the time I should mention the owner is an old white guy, and my friend is African American. I'll spare you the details, but basically my friend kept her cool and was very polite, while the restaurant owner gradually raised his voice and grew more furious. She wanted the charge removed for the roll she sent back, and the owner kept saying his ingredients were of the highest quality, etc etc. He sputtered the same things over and over again. His eyes grew wider with anger. His voice grew raised, until he was yelling. The way he slapped his bare hands (no gloves) onto the raw sushi meat to illustrate how "fresh" it was. People on the street stopped and turned their heads. The neighboring establishment took notice and their live band stopped playing. I could not believe this was happening. I lost sense of time, but this went on for maybe 30 minutes. Finally, the owner did it. "I'm gonna call the COPS," he said. Fear took over me. We all know how this could turn out. He did it. He went in the back, who knows what he said but those words could be life or death - we've seen the news. Tonight was a night that made me wonder how people could be so callously awful to another. The power of picking up the phone and calling the cops on a person of color as the final leverage. As a convenient way to raze down any inconvenience, even if it's a $20 matter. Afterwards, a nearby restaurant owner even came by to apologize to our group, even though he did nothing wrong. The next morning, my friend checked her credit card statement and was still charged for both rolls, even though another customer attempted to intervene and put down a $20 for her during the debacle. This restaurant needs to be shut down, but I don't think it needs our help getting there. read more

Wife and I were on our 40th wedding anniversary. Spent 4 days in Ogunquit and managed to hit the Black Sushi House twice, it was that good. Fish was fresh. Uni from the Maine coast. The food is amazing and the chef and owner William is a great guy! I saw all of the awesome reviews (and the one stupid one) and we decided to try this restaurant. I've never been more pleased by going to a restaurant cold! Let's get one thing out of the way first, being from Seattle I have access to several works class sushi places and innumerable decent ones. Black Sushi House is up there with some of the best sushi I've ever had! When you have a chef that cares as much as William about his food, you really can't go wrong. All the fish, even the poke bowls, is fresh sashimi grade. It was really nice to be able to talk with the owner and staff and develop a relationship for the couple hours we are there as well. All very nice and personable people who genuinely enjoy hosting and cooking for you. I grade all sushi restaurants on their tekka maki, always order that first thing and I'd it's good dive right in. Theirs did not disappoint, it was great! The mango crunch roll was very good, interesting flavor and not something I've ever really had before. If you're looking for the best sushi in the area, stop by Black Sushi House and be prepared to have some amazing food! The food was great. The fish on the maki, sashimi(toro, maguro, sake and ono FYI) and nigiri that we ordered was fresh and delicious, and the seaweed salad and miso soup were both excellent. Service was also very good. Everyone who works there is friendly and my water glass was topped off without delay the many times that I emptied it, as I was parched from walking around Ogunquit all day. This was my second consecutive trip to Ogunquit, Maine with my wife. We of course went for the lobster. Unfortunately the first year I never really left the ocean views of my hotel and the Marginal Way walk to find this gem. But thankfully I had a craving for sushi and came across Black Sushi House. Just a small spot next to the local movie theater, but typical of Ogunguit. I had to go in before my wife agreed to eat there and ask if they had anything for non fish eaters, my wife hates the stuff. Not on the menu was a 8oz Filet over of rice and there house salad. The chef, which i found out later was also the owner said he would make the salad "pedestrian" for my wife. Not understanding what he meant we said sure. I ordered the Spicy Tuna, my way of seeing the quality of the sushi before going deeper into the menu. And also a Flaming Roll (Spicy tune w/ jalapeno & avocado w/ red tobiko). Sushi was much better then expected. When my wifes plate arrived, I was more then interested in the house salad, having read a review somewhere about this house salad, and how great it was. I mean how good could a house salad really be. So I stole a bit. Let me tell you, this had to be the greatest peice of food I had ever ate. After trying a bit of my wifes, I ordered myself one. The chef seemed pleased that we enjoyed it so much to order a whole salad. Mine came with salmon skin too! They must have peeled the skin and took a torch to it, it was like fresh crispy bacon, but fish! I was in heaven. The dressing was unlike anything i had ever had before. Liquid crack I tell ya! I would have licked the plate clean if it wouldnt have embarrased my wife! It was that good. The rest of the night I had to tell everyone I came across about the dressing and this salad. Random people in the streets, it was that good. It was so good the next night I had a diner with family at another restaurant and afterwards went back to Black Sushi House for another house salad. The second time around I had to ask if the dressing was a closely gaurded secret or not, I couldnt see myself having to live without this dressing for a year! Oh yes I will be returning again in 2011! He did share one ingredient with me, but not knowing the rest it didnt matter. If you EVER have a chance to go to the south tip of Maine, visit Ogunquit and the Black Sushi House. Even if you dont eat sushi or fish they have something for you. Total hidden gem! Like other reviewers have said, the owner is incredibly nice, and the fish is high quality and fresh. We splurged on a bunch of rolls (hey, we're on vacation). The Sunset roll was one of our favorites -- a California roll topped with salmon, only the Cali roll was filled to the brim with real crab, so it was 100 times better than your average Cali roll. The Yorker roll and the Caterpillar were great too. And we loved the Philly roll, which is usually just a throw-away extra roll at most places, but the smoked salmon was so good that this roll was actually fantastic. The place is very small, so you'll have to wait or go at an off time. But worth it. P.S. The Wi-Fi password is awesome. read more

On June 19 2020, after reading the rave reviews and after not wanting fried seafood which seems to be a main offering in town, we found the restaurant closed down and the phone number answered with a recording that it had been disconnected This may have been Covid-related as all dining was a little upside down at the time. There was a small theater bistro operating instead (the restaurant operates out of the ground floor of a small theater) Didn't go. Black Sushi House continues to be a hidden gem. Located in the historic Leavitt Theatre, it shares that charm with the high, metal ceilings and brick patio outside. The food is outstanding, and presented beautifully. The trifecta salad- cucumber, seaweed, and squid- is a personal favorite. All the rolls are divine. And they easily have the best vegetarian roll- the "Veggie Bling Bling"- I have ever had. Friendly, family run business. So glad Black is open for another season! read more

During my recent vacation (Sept. 7th - 11th) to Ogunquit. My wife and I decided we wanted to try the Black Sushi House out, as we both enjoy eating sushi. We were not disappointed with this establishment. Right from the time we got there, the owner/chef greeted us after we sat down and asked us what type of sushi we liked. with that I decided on smoke Salmon and my wife on Lobster. The waitress was very friendly and intentive. In the end we had a newly created dessert by the chef. It was a banana sliced and the center removed and replaced with Nutella, on the side was two small scoops of ice cream and sauce drizzled all over. It was made to look like a sushi roll. My husband and I came here for dinner this week with another couple. There was a cute table outside so we decided to sit there, as the inside was pretty hot and stuffy. A waitress came right out to take our drink orders, but it was a different gentleman who brought them out to us. He ended up waiting on us for the remainder of our meal, and he was very nice and attentive. Our sushi was great! My husband loved the Lobster X2 roll, but it's worth noting that it had pieces of shell in almost every bite. But it was packed with lobster and very tasty! My favorite was the Green Eggs & Ham roll - it was excellent! Everything was very fresh and the presentation was great. We ordered take out last night and it was amazing. I have eaten at many different sushi restaurants in many states and this is by far one of the best. They have real crab in their California rolls as a starter. Some of the specialty rolls were simply fantastic. I would suggest trying the Green Eggs and Ham roll and don't pass up the Sunset Roll. Last but not least, my favorite of the order was the Casco Bay Roll. These are big rolls and worth every penny. Hats off to the chef and owner here. We will be back for sure. read more
