Came in on a weekday afternoon just before a movie. Was conveniently located in the same parking lot as the movie theatre in South Common. Wasn't impressed with the food, drink or service. Ordered a draft beer and it wasn't even filled to the top. Commented on that to the server but she didn't seem to really care as she didn't respond. The Angry Lettuce Wraps were just "okay". Nothing special. Barely any chicken on the lettuce and didn't actually taste very fresh. Had way too much dressing compared to the toppings. Wouldn't ever choose to order again. We sat at the and ordered drinks and three light bites -- -avocado toast: I think this was when avocado toast was all the rage and everyone wanted to copy that shit. its no longer on the menu, thank you god. that bread was terrible and hard, and its like they used half an avocado to spread on 5 pieces of toast (is it bc they were rationing what CA sent over?) -coconut shrimp: THIS was good. Earls Kitchen + Bar was a place where my wife and I chose to celebrate our anniversary over lunch this past week. We came at lunch hour and saw that the restaurant was busy, which is always great. We were met by two hostesses, one who found a suitable place, and the other led you to your table. Great system as it allows for guests to be met at the door instead of waiting for the host to return to the front. We were able to be seated quickly from when we arrived. The only piece I would comment on the hostess leading us to the table is their way of conducting a conversation. It felt unprofessional, as we were one of their friends going out to a party. I understand and respect being hospitable to guests, but this felt unusual due to the mannerisms and conversation when we arrived at the table. Our server was okay; they were timely in coming to greet us, let us know the specials, and take our drink order, but from there, we only saw the server sometimes. You could tell that it was a routine: check in with the guests, grab drink orders, bring drinks, take orders and then, when food was delivered, check in to see if everything was okay. This is fine, but when it came to paying the bill, it felt odd and patronizing as that is when the server engaged with us the most when we were there. At that time, I felt that the effort was to secure a reasonable tip, which I always do as I understand the service world, but it felt like I was being patronized. For drinks, we ordered a couple of drinks from the drink menu and was offered a selection of spirits based on the drink I chose. The server knew their spirits which was great to see. When the drinks arrived, they were tasty; the only comment I would make is to provide a stir stick. We ordered an appetizer and two entrees, and the food was hot and came out timely, considering how busy the place was. The atmosphere in the restaurant is great, and the servers are well-trained and timely. The food is great, with good-sized portions. I want to highlight the seasonal vegetables with the steak I ordered, one of the best sides of vegetables I have ever had at a restaurant. They were fresh, there was a good selection to accompany the steak, and the seasoning was a 10 out of 10. Well done! Went to Earls in south common for a little ladies evening and since the third lockdown started, no indoor dining is allowed. Luckily this location has 2 really great patios that are beautiful and spacious. They are also setting up a third patio with a temporary tent out front as well. Earls is always a safe choice because you know the food is consistent, the drinks are good, and the ambiance is usually good too. This time we got a great spot on the patio right next to the fireplace. The booths are all partitioned off so you cannot really see anyone you're sitting beside. We ordered the Buffalo cauliflower, the gyoza, the spicy tuna maki, and the sticky toffee chocolate pudding for dessert. We also ordered a side of the garlic mashed potatoes. No drinks for us this time just water. The bill was VERY reasonable and came to just over $20 each! I'd say that's a great price for a nice night out with the girls. The service started out great. We didn't make reservations as when we called they said they were not taking reservations. When we showed up around 7pm we didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes for them to clean the table for us and seat us. Our initial server was really good, it was busy on the patios that evening. Mid way through our dinner the server had to leave, I think she was off for the evening. We had a new server who wasn't as friendly or attentive as the first girl but was still ok. The bathrooms were very clean. Hand sanitizers at every step of the way in the restaurant and also arrows showing you where to walk. It felt very safe and clean. Earls is a consistent win, with great appetizers, burgers, steak, salmon, and Caesars. This location has a very attentive, pleasant, and competent cadre of wait staff and bartenders, all of whom were able to share details about the regular and special offerings. We've come here mostly as a couple, but we've hosted large group gatherings as well, and the staff have been able to feed all of us without issue. There's even a chef's tasting menu available with some advanced negotiation; we loved our evening with the chef. Clean, tidy, nicely lighted, with comfortable seats. My weekend started with a surprise date from my husband. Earls have been on my foodie bucket list for long. So, my husband decided to check this place off from my list. I would suggest to make a reservation either on call or thru apps like Open Table. They have four kinds of seating arrangement: Patio, Lounge and Dining and atrium. We kicked off our evening with their snacks: Chilli Chicken + Wontons: Crispy wontons piled high on tender chicken is the perfect appetizer to start with. Followed by main course: Margherita Pizza: We decided to go with little light main course. Ordered this lite and yummy pizza topped with house made sauce, mozzarella and chiffonade basil. Yucatan Chicken Tacos: Finally, my favourite part of order has come. Chicken Tacos served with your choice of fries (Regular, Garlic and Yam). However when I ordered a medium rare steak and empathized how I wanted it more on the rare side I was given an almost completely brown and well done steak. I guess this is the weekend of extended Christmas gatherings and for this group of friends, Earls was the late supper selection. The restaurant was quite busy at 7 pm, so the first to arrive grabbed a seat in the lounge (which honestly is really only divided by the loudness of music and the restaurant side is pretty loud when you can't properly hear everyone at the booth without them speaking loudly). By the time the rest of us arrived she managed to get us seated at a booth along the windows on the restaurant side. There was a brief comment on how she had to carry her wine glass across the restaurant while carrying her winter jacket and purse and navigating the closely placed tables. However all was good as we 4 were able to come together finally for supper. I had to struggle with the stairs to get to the booth but it was worth it to be further back in the restaurant. I've been to Earls in the past at various locations across the city and in other cities. Honestly, I always find their food options to be fairly safe and consistently standard. Nothing truly unique besides their drink menus (which some of the ladies were able to enjoy). Two of the ladies decided on salads for supper (good choice as the salads here are big but not overwhelming). Another had the soup, salad and bread. I went with the chicken & wontons starter but had it added on top of rice (recommended by waitress). When I was asking about portion sizes, the waitress suggested adding rice to a couple of appetizer options as I wasn't hugely hungry but wanted something filling. Meals were good but as the volume in the restaurant was so loud, it made it really hard for us to properly visit. Especially since the lights dropped fairly low about half way through our meal. It kind of like a signal that they'd like to close even though it was no where near that time. So we cut the evening short. There was multiple troubles with the portable machines to pay. Be very careful that you're not tipping 30% as both machines seemed to really jump at that part when you go to select the tip percentage or dollar amount. Once we got everything finally paid for, this is when the most unfortunate event occurred. As we were sliding out of the booth, my one friend had her pants caught on something sticky under the table. One of course looks immediately to see what needs to be cleaned off. To all of our shock, it was gum. And a lot of it stretched over her knee! Worse when we peered under the table there was much more. Stomachs churned and we all went pale when we realized as she removed the gum with an ice cube that her pants were ruined. Now this could have happened anywhere. However when the waitress offered to get the manager it took over 15 minutes for him to eventually make his way to us. That's 15 minutes of us having to console our friend on of her favourite pants being ruined. He did finally offer to have the pants compensated but honestly I won't be returning any time soon knowing that the tables only get looked at once every two months for gum cleaning. One can't help think of else are they not doing on a regular basis... I didn't have a chance to check the washrooms but they are at least located on the lower part of the restaurant, so no stairs need to be done to access them if you're seated in the lower area. They also have ramp access on the handicap/patio side of the building. So if you're in need of that, you'll need to bypass what looks like the only entrance with stairs and access the ramp on the other side (which is actually well located by the handicap stalls but you might miss it as I did. The railing blends in with the patio, so I didn't notice it until after I got up the stairs and in through the door. read more

It's Earls, so it's pretty good. Generally a little expensive but it's a nice place with tasty food so usually worth it, definitely worth it during happy hour. Got onto the "private patio" which was lovely to be further apart from other people, but it was super cold and windy. Strange placement of the patio and roof heaters....it's like a bit of a wind tunnel which strips all the heat from the heaters (it was a pretty decent day outside). ALL THAT BEING SAID it was still good and tasty. Mojito is my favourite drink on the happy hour menu, but the Sangria (both red and white) are also tasty taste. Regular happy hour burger much better than the impossible burger (to be expected I suppose). So, it's re-opened with social distancing seating, but still, it was a very good time. Went with hubby.... Let's start with the clam chowder, that didn't taste like clam chowder - it TASTED BETTER! A lovely tomato*ish base (but still had milk) real vegetables...which cut the regular heaviness of a regular more milkier bowl. We both tried the 8oz Mushroom Chicken Steak special, the meat was seasoned very nicely, cooked properly (mine) and the mushrooms and mashed potatoes were good, maybe just a bit on the salty side, if anything. But I have to say my greatest delight was the salad (not Caesar) - I started to dig around in the my bowl and found pumpkin seeds, finely grated feta, and - - - sunflower seeds, with nicely cut cherry tomatoes. WOW! Best salad I've had in a very long time! It had a shallot & champagne dressing on the side. The server was friendly and offered amends immediately -when my husband's steak was med-well, not med-rare....so Earls' took away the cost of my clam chowder soup instead :) Win-win. We will definitely go back. If I had only one suggestion to make to Earls' is that the place is nicely decorated, the food is good, the servers are friendly, but the "uniforms" are not as nice/elegant as they could be. The hostess had SUPER tight pants and plunging neckline top, one server had a bandaged knee which she was overheard saying she fractured it, then doing a little kick with it? The food at this location is nothing short of AMAZING. My husband and I eat out every three weeks on the Saturday evening after a regular appointment I have. We came here just to try it a few weeks ago, and were so impressed we went back on our next day out. Abd the food was even better the second time!! The service is also excellent (shoutout to Maia (Maya? I'm sorry, hon, not sure how to spell your name)). Now I don't want to go anywhere else. They're available on one of the Food Apps - I think Doordash - so I'll probably end up spending a ridiculous amount of money ordering my favorites in between visits. Recommendations are the Sirloin, Ribs, Jumbo Crab Cakes, Warm Potato Salad, the Red Wine Sangria, and the non-alc Pineapple Cucumber Mule. Yum!!! The Sticky Toffee Chocolate Pudding is a great dessert, if you have room LOL I would seriously give this place TEN stars if I could. read more

Very disappointed! Usually have my staff dinner at Earl's Calgary Trail. We have tried this Earls in South Common several times and the food has been the main disappointment. However, the food that we ordered arrived cold after waiting 20 minutes. They need to hire a chef who knows the basics on how to cook/grill a medium rare steak and a rare steak. In their goal to be creative they try to add too many flavours on one plate which do not compliment each other those flavors are lost. Also one thing that has been noted with this bunch of Earls is that they need to consider hiring a few mature staff which would make the older visitors somewhat more comfortable. I come here every once in a while for a standard American fare, but I notice that menu items change every so often which is nice because it feels like a new experience every couple of years, especially when they experiment with cultural dishes. Parking is great here, lots of spots and it's a great location for a fairly quiet sit down meal before going to the nearby movie theatre. In my opinion, it always takes about 5 minutes to get seated, even when it's not busy. There's a sophisticated atmosphere, but the cushions on club chairs at our table was in slight disrepair. That didn't deduct from our dining experience overall. Staff were hospitable and friendly even after we had a late comer to our table & served out his appetizer order quickly. He did complain that most of the garlic in his garlic fries were in the bottom of the bowl, but that's not a dealbreaker for me. I liked the chefs set menu. I saved about $5 in price comparison & the portion was enough to not have leftovers but also feel full after. Food is beautifully presented too. read more

We came here for lunch with a supplier. As always earls was good for this type of group. I had the chicken Huang pow. You control the heat by adding peppers. I went with middle of the road and got 3 peppers. That was not too hot so next time I will up it to 4 or 5. A couple of people had salmon dishes and reported it was good. Oh boy! Where to begin!? The service is nothing to write home about and neither is the food for that matter. It is what you would expect from your typical restaurant. It does not exceed expectations or fall short of them. Earls is a place you would go to enjoy the atmosphere and a few drinks with friends. It is not somewhere to go for a special occasion (ie. romantic dinner, anniversary, graduation). I know this cause I took my girlfriend and she wasn't pleased. To be completely honest my only problem with this Earls location is the actual floor plan. The lounge and dinning area are connected (and I mean connected). There is no separation between the two. So if you have come for a quiet casual dinner.. you're gonna get LL Cool J's music video on the giant projection screen whether you like it or not. My girlfriend liked it.. I did not. He does have some catchy songs though, but that's neither here nor there. To be completely fair it would be a great place to go if all you are looking for is a lounge environment and food that can get the job done. However, if you want to enjoy a nice relaxed evening this is not the place. Just ask the disgusted family beside us when some more raunchy music videos came on. My family and I went here to celebrate my older brother's birthday. When we (a party of 5) got there we were told that the wait would be 30 minutes. That was our fault really; we completely forgot to reserve a table in advance and the parking lot seemed full. We were served wine samples while we waited, which did taste a bit watered-down, but I'll admit that I'm not exactly a wine connoisseur, so it could have been great wine for all I know. To be fair to the Earls staff, we only waited 15-20 minutes before we were seated. I ordered a medium-well steak, a New York sirloin if I remember correctly, which turned out to be more bloody than I had expected. It tasted scrumptious though, so maybe they knew what kind of steak I REALLY wanted all along. Most of my family had seafood and there weren't any complaints. Our waitress wasn't bad either. The bar area was a bit loud (although our table was right at the edge of the dining area) so the sound of the Oilers game drowned out the table conversation. Oilers lost, as usual. Oh man, growing up out West, Earl's was a mainstay in childhood and years following. Even until a couple years ago, I'd swear by them and thought they were great for a chain. It felt right going back to Earl's being back in Edmonton. Immediately I saw the menu and was quite surprised how 90% of the menu must be identical to 15 (or more) years ago. I seem to recall they were trying a few different things about 5 years ago, but I guess that's out the window now. I still wasn't discouraged as I had nostalgic feelings for the Kung Pao. It turned out to be mostly nostalgia as it wasn't as good as I remember and the sauce was too sweet. About $6 to add 5 average-sized prawns. The Kung Pao was probably a '2' given that it was about $20. I'll still give the place a '3' as I know some of the other items on the menu are pretty solid and this place had very nice decor and a unique, large arched ceiling. We came by their wings happy hours, it's after 3PM, so we ordered three different kinds of flavors of the chicken wings, and the hot wings is delicious. And the feature Manu has a lot of good choice for you, the champagne berry salad and the soup is the two I would recommend. Last night, I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo. It looks like some kind of shrink inflation is going on. I get this dish often and usually share it with my friend as the portion is decent. However, this time there was hardly anything in my bowl to share. I flagged the manager, who was very unfriendly. All that he could say was that it's in a smaller/different bowl than usual. Also, it appeared that that pasta had sat under the heat lamp for a bit as it was dry. I didn't see any sauce. Nobody asked how the food tasted. When our food was dropped off we were not asked if we needed anything else. They forgot my friends gravy and took forever bringing it once I asked for it. No pasta spoon was given. Never amazing, never terrible. This Earl's is close to home, so sometimes when we are feeling lazy, we end up here. There are consistency issues that irritate me about Earl's that will prevent me from giving them more than 2 stars. For example, tacos with a slice of avocado that is probably the same size of a 5 year old's pinky finger, and enough cilantro to make a small salad. I ask for more avocado and I'm brought out a few real slices of avocado... for a $2 charge on my bill. LOL. The other downside is it's hard to just get in and out. We always sit in the lounge, usually order quickly, but the majority of the time it is a long wait for the bill/debit machine. They have a nice patio, when it's fully open. Good drink deals. Sometimes there are deals on different appies. Overall, it's an average place to go to fill the void in your stomach, with something on the menu for everyone. read more

We knew that Earls would serve us well and I wouldn't have to make a reservation which is a plus for us. This location has beautiful decor inside and out. The seating area is very nice in the foyer and the washrooms are fun in that a Captain America toy signifies male and wonder woman for female. They used to have Superman ... They should have kept him ;) The dining room is very large and the lounge very nice with a giant screen. The service at the front door was very good and we were brought in quickly by the hostess who asked how our day was. She interacted and really seemed to care. Our server was prompt and offered us water and broke the news that the Reuben sandwich was now gone which was heartbreaking to me. It took a bit of time for server to come back, but he then took our order. Our food came out quite quick, but unfortunately it had at least one piece of hair in it. The salad was good and the Cajun chicken sandwich apart from the hair. The server did not come back for a very long time to check up on it, and I believe him and if not him, then a bunch of the servers were in the kitchen goofing off and laughing. I heard more goofing around later. He eventually came and I explained the situation. The manager came out and apologized and said she would comp the dessert and my meal. The dessert which we always get is the sticky toffee pudding and its always out quick and fast Overall, this was a decent experience. The food that we ate was all very good and came out very quickly. Their Mixed Greens salad is a must order. Service is always stellar. Just went here for my boyfriend's birthday with a bunch of friends and I asked the waitress if they did complimentary desserts for birthdays. She apologized and said they didn't do anything like that. I told her that was totally fine and we'd have the chocolate lava cake anyways. She brought out the chocolate lava cake with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate syrup on the plate and we noticed we weren't charged for it when we got the bill. A friend of ours bid on the Earl Chef's Table at a fundraising auction and invited us along. (Note: the Chef's Table must be booked on a Tuesday night and needs to be organized at least a month in advance - they fill up fast.) The concept of a chef's table is amazing! An experienced server and sous chef spend the evening with your group. They walk you through a 5 course tasting menu, selecting from Earls favourites. We were given a couple of options along the way but our server provided most of the recommendations and we were up for anything. They did ask at the beginning of the night if anyone had dietary restrictions and were careful to work around them. We were also offered a selection of Earl's signature drinks throughout the evening to accompany our meal! It really is the recipe for an awesome night out. And it could have been a 5 star experience. The food and drink choices were delicious and the idea was a lot of fun! Nevertheless, the Chef's Table was a little lack lustre. We were told a little about the history of different dishes and the ingredients used but there wasn't a lot of genuine enthusiasm which could have made the night more memorable. I was also expecting a little more in terms of a private dining experience. We were seated in the main part of the restaurant, which is very large and noisy. We watched many groups come in after us & get seated before us. We waited around 30-40 minutes to get seated. That's an awful long time for a place that's not supposed to be busy at 5pm! The food here is only mediocre. Not great. Not terrible. They seemed to have changed their menu since I've last gone but I wasn't wowed. Our server was very lovely though & did a great job. Steak was well done (despite asking for medium). "sauteed" prawns were in no way sauteed. My guess is boiled or steamed...unless they saute in water. Service was fair. read more
