Came here at 9PM after a show at the Citadel. Several other people had the same idea so got very full very quickly. If you park at the library parking this place is super close and easy to get to. Waiter was super nice, refilled water several times and apologized he was so busy. We tried the Ponche De Chicha house cocktail - 10/10 tasted like pineapple juice - a great summer cocktail. Very pricey and they added a Lot of ice. They didn't have the same Eighty Eight as on the online menu. We also got a house favorite the Brussel Sprouts - 10/10. Cooked perfectly, good portion, love that $3 is donated to the food bank, wish there was more chipotle but there was Lots of feta. Soo good - highly recommend. We also tried the Sticky Toffee Pudding. 10/10 great portion for price. Wish there was more toffee sauce as it was sooo good! Cake was moist but maybe too much salt as that got overwhelming. Ice cream was good - didn't taste too cheap. Next time I'll try the Rusty Bicycle house drink but I will definitly be back! read more

This place might be dark and moody, maybe a little sketch from the outside. But you have to brave past that and go inside and be charged up by the amazing drinks and food. The staff were getting busy when we arrived after a show at the citadel but they were quick and made sure to still check on us frequently. Waters were never empty and our food came out promptly after we ordered. I was immediately drawn to the fermented purple corn drink (Ponche De Chicha) which was so delightful! Fruity but not over powering. A nice amount of ice and an interesting pineapple garnish to go with an interesting drink. We were also very eager to try the brussel sprouts, which were absolutely amazing! Brussels Sprouts Elote: honey glazed Brussels sprouts and drizzled with that chipotle lime aioli, and so much feta cheese. Plus I believe a portion of sales of this dish goes to the food bank. Always love supporting a good cause while enjoying good food. To finish it off we had to dip into the dessert menu and get the Sticky pudding. The sauce divine and I wished for a smidge more. We went to eat here for a special occasion. We took our 7 year old boy and the three of us had a great time.time. The prices came with the experience so it was well woth it! We dressed up and the ambience matched our vibes. The food was great. Our server was very friendly and made us feel special! We got acknowledged by other staff members as well. Be ready to walk a bit as parking was a bit far. Overall great experience. We will come back for sure, not as often because it is pricey but for special occasions for sure. I had some time to kill downtown, so I swung by this establishment. Fancy fancy place I tells ya. Expensive bar but very swanky. Nice modern decor. A bit small of a bar but it was intimate. I got a pint of Blindman while I munched on smoked olives. Later I ordered Japanese whiskey, I forget the name. The server seemed to know his stuff, as per his recommendation. Good service. Visiting from Vancouver on a work trip and decided to pop in for a bite with my colleague. We were first greeted quickly but quickly was told it'll take a few minutes to seat. Looking around, there were only 3 tables seated. The rest of them empty so I'm not sure what we were waiting for. The cocktail menu was pretty good but it's quite pricey. Onto the food. Started with steak tartare and the polenta cake. The steak tarts was pretty good. Having a full egg sitting on top was a bit intimidating compared to the small quail egg I'm used to seeing but it wasn't too much. They incorporated roasted beets into the mix and the steak was left on the chunkier side. Chips were fragile and most pieces were broken and too tiny to put meat on. Not bad overall. Polenta cake was the highlight. Perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The ricotta cheese and fried sage was beautiful! Things went downhill after. We shared the short ribs with molasses succotash and baked cauliflower with cheese and bread crumb topping. The short ribs were dry and chewy. Not meat on your mouth as expected. The sauce was thin and didn't stick well to the meat. The succotash was ok. The cauliflower was most disappointing. You think ooey gooey cheese when you read the description but it's not. It was watery and not ooey gooey. The bread crumbs weren't crunchy either. I would come back for the polenta cake and tartare but nothing else. read more

Definitely a favorite! We have been here a few times for cocktails and first tried it out because of their mocktail option. Their cocktails are carefully crafted and delicious; the mocktails give a perfect faux alcoholic experience with drinks that aren't just juice in a glass. It's easy to see why this place comes highly recommended by friends and online reviews. There is an impressive bar with an equally impressive cocktail menu. The food menu is simple but we liked everything we tried. And the service was great throughout the night. To start the night, pick a cocktail. I had the Whiskey Sour which has been on the menu since Day 1 and it worked perfectly with the Drunken Bread appetizer. The bread comes on a hot skillet, tastes like the heavy traditional flavors of escargot and melts in your mouth. We had the Bear & The Flower Pork Chop and the Housemade Pasta. The pork chops was easily the star of the show. The meat was moist and flavorful, the glaze brought a wonderful sweet tartness and the potatoes were a smokey balance. Each bite was absolutely delicious. End the night with the Sticky Toffee Pudding. If you are feeling full, order it anyways and share it!! read more

Not worth the money. The food wasn't that great and the menu didn't have a very good selection either.

My company recently moved downtown and Woodwork sent us all little "welcome" messages with a 20% off coupon inviting us to stop by and try them, so a group of us tried to book a table in November to check them out after work. We quickly discovered that (1) they are small and fill up quickly, so book a few weeks in advance; (2) the folks you talk to if you phone up can't even make a booking for any large number of people (we had 8, which is large but not crazy huge) and I was told the only option was to email; (3) it took 2 days to even get an answer from the email and that answer was sorry, "we only take large bookings that commit to a set family style menu which is $55/person." Which wasn't exactly helpful or useful since we wanted to come and check out the normal menu, not a fancy set menu. We ended up going to DOSC instead. I stopped by in December to try it out on my own, sat at the bar. The place is small and trendy looking and clearly does fill up on a weekend evening. I was heading to a show at the Winspear Centre in about an hour so asked if there was time to order food; was told that it shouldn't be a problem if I ordered quickly, so I ordered a glass of wine and the steak frites and indeed it did come out in plenty of time, no problem there. However, the food itself was really not great. The texture of the steak was fine, but is was very oversalted, which made a poor combination with the "hickory fries" which were also excessively salty. If the steak had been served with something more bland, like mashed potatoes or unsalted fries, it might have been an okay balance, but salty + saltier meant there was no taste but salt. There was also a small lettuce salad, and I have no idea how they even managed to do this, but even the salad tasted salty. The entire plate was just salt, salt, and more salt and since the fries were "hickory fries" there wasn't even any ketchup or other condiment provided to help balance out the salt. Since I was hurrying off to see a show, I just made do and left most of the fries, but very disappointing overall. I mentioned this to a coworker the next day and he said he avoids this place because the kitchen staff smoke heavily, which means they over-season the food as they've less sense of taste from the smoking. No idea if this is true, but they are certainly overseasoning the food for SOME reason and this was certainly the worst steak frites I've had in Edmonton. I will likely come back once more to try some other dish because so many reviews have spoken well of the food that perhaps the night I came was some bad aberration, and will update if so ... but seriously unimpressive first visit. read more

Husband and I went for an early Valentine's Day dinner. We have been hunting for a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle for the past six years and had only just found out that Woodwork had some. He finally tasted it and said it was just how he imagined (so the hunt continues)... huge thrill for him. The drink menu was amazing - tons of cocktails and wine options. We shared the frites and brussel sprouts to start. The frites were covered in parmesan and delicious; I could have eaten three orders. I ordered the ragu. The thick pasta noodles were perfectly cooked and the sauce was flavorful. My husband had the fried chicken.. by far the best he's ever had. The slaw salad on the side was also really good. We were staying in a hotel across the street and decided to try this place. Made a reservation for 5 pm and laughed because it was empty when we arrived. By 5:30 it was packed. Efficient prompt service. Great single malts and big ice cubes. Great craft drinks. All those deserve 5's. Now the food .... Was good. But like all other reviewers say-- the menu is tooo restrictive! Only 4 entree choices?? One beef, one pork, one chicken, one risotto. So basically nothing for a pescetarian avoiding carbs--why no fish? As to the food we ordered ..... Fries--very tasty! They have some of the best Old Fashioned drinks in the city. You can also grab some small bites. Most important the decor is just cool. There's also a really nice touch of smoked wood from the smoker they have in the kitchen. The lighting is dark and there's mostly booths which makes going there feel cozy and intimate. It's a romantic place. We had the stick toffee pudding and some drinks. They have some fancy sofas which is nice for a non-alcoholic drink option. The sticky toffee had a light sprinkling of sea salt which complimented the richness of the sponge cake with the toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream. read more

Giving this place a 3 to be nice but it was really more of a 2.5/5. I feel like I am one of the minority here who wouldn't rate this place 4-5/5 stars. I just was not as impressed as everyone else. I think the reason is that I wasn't having cocktails. It is clear to me that the selling point of this place is the cocktails... but we don't drink! So when we try a place out we have to gauge it completely on the food instead of the drink menu. Our waitress was really great and attentive. She always looked after our table. This was likely the best part of the night was that we had such a lovely waitress. The decor is really trendy and the tables are small but far enough apart. Unique artwork. My boyfriend described our food as "blissfully mediocre" and I totally agree. I contemplated saying something but are you allowed to complain when the food is just meh? Roasted Cauliflower - Best thing we tried all night. Chicken Drumsticks - Nothing really special at all. Tasted like regular BBQ sauce and had a sprinkling of sesame seeds. Vegetable Rissotto - Boring. Beef Shortrib - Disgusting. I didn't even finish it. I have no idea what when wrong here but the short rib was 100% bone and not much rib. And then they douse the corn and beans in balsamic vinegar or something. So you basically have a balsamic vinegar soup. Really gross. We didn't eat hardly any of that. Waitress came and could see we weren't super impressed but neither of us really cared to say anything. I mean what is the point? I didn't really have any interest in ordering anything else on the menu and saving the money didn't really matter to me. I kind of just wanted to leave so we could go to another restaurant. We were still super hungry afterwards and went out for a second dinner. Turned what should have only been an $80 into like a $150. For two people who don't drink that's a lot of money to spend on food for 1 night. I might try a re-review one day but I don't have this place in mind for dinner anytime soon. I talked to my friends about this place and they totally reaffirmed that the cocktails are the only reason they go there, and not the food... Great cocktails! They have a pretty good selection of yummy drinks for you to try. The charcuterie board here is awesome - it's a large portion and has a balanced set of flavours. A split it with a friend and the both of us were feeling comfortably full by the end of it. It is a darker space, which I wasn't a huge fan of - made me feel kind of vampire-y. The tables also felt quite close together which definitely lost the illusion of privacy. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Decided to pop in and meet up with some friends one Friday evening. I was the first to arrive, and the place was packed to the gills! Not an empty seat in the house. I asked the hostess if there would happen to be an available table... For six of us! Knowing it was a far cry, I tried anyhow! She said she wasn't sure, that there likely wasn't an available table until 10:45pm. This was a 45 min wait... Not terribly bad for a busy Friday night! Meanwhile I was texting with a friend to get their ETA, when the hostess came up to us saying she had a table for us. But it was for only 4 people. Good enough seeing as our other friends were running late. Luckily the table next to us was just about finished and we were able to make the table big enough for all of us! Win!! Kudos to the hostess for making this happen! Fast forward a bit.. This place is well known for their delicious crafted cocktails! Their menu offers about a dozen, but don't hesitate to ask for something different. The lovely bartender concocted an amazing "spirit forward" bevy for me and it was quite possibly the most delicious drink I've ever had! The food here is definitely different from most restaurants. Priding themselves with local ingredients you won't find a humungous menu with lots to choose from. A small menu featuring a few small plates, a few entrees and a few desserts. I had the brisket and chose to have fries instead of grits (no offence, I'm just not a fan of grits). The brisket was DEADLY!!! I will likely have it again if it's on the menu during my next visit. Service here is top notch! If you're in a hurry I wouldn't suggest visiting on a busy night as the cocktails can take a little while. There are a number of contemporary Canadian restaurants that I haven't tried in Edmonton yet, but in my opinion woodwork could be one of the best ones. I came here with a party of five so we were able to try a few menu items. The Breton cocktail was off the chain. The Cognac compliments the apple flavour that comes from the cider in the cocktail. It's very smoky and bubbly. Highly recommend. The tartare was the best of the small plates, and I don't even like tartare. They now serve it with toast... so much better than chips. It's a hefty portion, so perfect for sharing. Amazing flavour from the mustard. Very aromatic! The Brussels sprouts were tasty and very smoky. I enjoyed them, but found that there was too much dressing on them. The feature foie gras was served super chilled, which I did not really like. It was super creamy so serving it more on the room temp side would have improved the flavour and consistency. The yuzu jelly was a great compliment to it. I'd recommend waiting for it to warm up a bit before enjoying it. The fennel salad that it came with was very nice to break the richness of the plate. Finally, we shared the whole roast chicken. I highly recommend this dish. It's very well done. The breast was roasted, soaked in butter (I think), and served with carrots, potatoes, and a beautiful jus. The dark meat was deep fried and served with dill buttermilk sauce. The fried chicken could have been a bit less cooked and have the sauce on the side (it's hidden underneath but really needs that sauce to compliment it). The spatzle could have been incredible if it wasn't so over salted. Overall the chicken was great but on the salty side (I find this very common in most YEG restaurants). We shared the lemon tart. It was fantastic. Served a bit warmer that I would have expected. I prefer my lemon desserts on the cooler side. It's very buttery!! Overall, great food that could be even better if there was a bit less salt and some small details were reconsidered. read more

Wow! What wonderful cocktails! Their house sour was simply amazing (13$). The fire during the make definitely added entertainment, but the drink itself was awesome. Much creativity here! I also had a Hot Toddy which was made with a pecan based syrup and garnished with a blow torch burned cinnamon stick which was a great winter drink. We sat at the bar for this one and was glad that we did! Very entertaining bartenders and characters. A nice people watching place. We started with the meatballs (13$). They were delicious with a tomato sauce that you want to scoop every bit of. Our food order was the Cornish Hen and Risotto at 21$ and the Dill Sausage with a wonderful horseradish dip at 22$. A friend came from out of town, so I wanted to take him to a local first class restaurant. He has some dietary restrictions and asked for some options as the menu did not have anything that meet his restrictions. They came up with a special one off dish that he absolutely loved. This is a great place to chill out and read or enjoy a coffee with a friend, it's got a very relaxed vibe with trendy decor "Tip of The Day!!!" Grab a table as soon as you walk in this place fills up fast, when we sat down there were no more spots available The staff were very friendly and helpful they explained there most popular items like Whoopies ( we had a brownie and Nutella one) Street parking is all you get here if your driving, there is also a bus stop right out front. I plan on heading back to try out some of there sandwiches on there menu, we had an espresso and a London fog with white chocolate they were both great The only down side is there hours it's pretty hard to make it there unless you work odd hours yourself read more

I had been meaning to hit this place up, so what better time than a birthday dinner? If you haven't been this is an amazing room, you gotta go. Very narrow very tight and very intimate. The vibe is incredible. So upbeat and modern I felt immediately at ease. They have a liquor wall that is as inclusive and incredible as any you will ever see. We sat down at a two top that has a foot of clearance between you and the next table on either side. This could be a problem if you want more privacy but for us it was great. For a snack before dinner we had these amazing Parmesan fries with crispy rosemary. Absolutely amazing. I'm not a huge parm fan but these little crispy critters were just incredible. Worth the price of admission (which is nothing) for sure. The cocktails are as beautiful as the decor. I had one of the best Negroni's ever and the gf had a classic French 74 equally amazing. For dinner I had the steak which was melt in your mouth and yet toothsome. Shaved actual horseradish root on the top just added to perfection of the dish. Add in some roasted veg and a beautiful purée just bliss. I honestly can't think of a better one I've had recently. The lady had an amazing pasta dish that they customized to her vegetarian needs. Woodwork is a pretty impressively good little restaurant. I love how the place smells like wood smoke. That said, I don't generally drink alcohol so the extensive cocktail menu is lost on me. Still, I truly have enjoyed some of the non-alcoholic beverages and I ADORE the brassica salad. Oh my goodness, the brassica salad is so good! I really should sing its praises more loudly! The lunch menu is much more limited than the dinner menu (which is short but good). That said my lunch was followed by a free cookie for dessert which was a great touch! Dinner includes much more variety but takes a whole lot longer (for obvious reasons). Service can occasionally be slow but is impeccable: staff really takes care of your needs even if the restaurant can be quite busy and even when it is not, it may take quite some time to receive your bill, or your food or any other service. I'm not entirely sure as to why service seems so slow on occasion here, but I do still love this little place. Get a reservation if you do want to go. We went to this place after debating what we wanted for dinner. Be mindful that this place offers fine dining with a dress code and prices to match. There were 8 people in our group and the place accommodated us with separate bills. The menu offered a variety of appetisers, mains and desserts. However, most ducked ordering any drinks as even pop was expensive. One person ordered the Mac & Cheese appetiser. It had truffle oil and aged cheddar. It was very good but $11.00 for a cup seemed a bit rich. To save costs I split their version of Charcuterie Board. The assortment of meat was good but the cheese was rather lacking. But the real disappointment was the bread. We received a basket of sliced bread while a previous Yelp! Photo had a Ciabatta bread. Even a baguette would have been better. The meal did have two stars the smoked sausage and the pate. However, for as much as the menu suggested this was a main for sharing it was lacking in volume. Next we ordered dessert. The assortment was very good with many offerings to make a decision difficult. I ordered the chocolate-peanut butter cake which was fabulous. I did sample the other two desserts and they too were amazing. The service ran hot and cold. Upfront our server was attentive and offered a ton of insight in to the main items on the menu. However mid-way through the meal he disappeared. So we had to wait 15 minutes to get some added bread for the Charcuterie. It might not have been such a thing. But the server had indicated that he would get more bread when the Charcuterie arrived. I was disappointed and my tip reflected by displeasure with the service. read more

I've been dying to come to Woodwork since I saw their sign go up. I am pretty passionate about the downtown revitalization scene, so it was awesome to have a new local restaurant to eat out at. We started with the charcuterie board, and I had a gin martini. Served with a lemon twist, it was the best martini I have had in Edmonton - no lies here! The board had a nice mix of meats and two varieties of cheese. I would recommend they add more pickles or spreads, but otherwise a great tasting plate. For entrees, I had the pork shoulder. I'm not a huge fan of pork, but it sounded really good. I was impressed with the yellow split peas it was served on top of; an interesting twist on ham and pea soup, perhaps? The shoulder was tender and flavour full, but next time I'll try the rainbow trout or beef tenderloin! I went here on a Monday night. Apparently they are busy every night so get in early or book your reso online! They have some unquie soda on their menu. I got a grapefruit/lavender and my friend had ginger. The flavours were deep but the drinks didn't have that gross punch that a lot of artificial sweeteners have. I went with a friend and shared a few dishes. We started with the Brussel sprout and meatballs. The Brussel sprouts were cooked perfectly, charred with a bit of light seasoning mixed with apples. The meatballs were quite rich and flavourful with thyme and a bit of Rosemary (You get three large meatballs). Lastly we shared their pork medallion entree. It came with sauerkraut and mashed sweet potatoe. The sweet potatoe was amazing! So flavourful. The food and service was great. The menu definitely reminded me of a thanksgiving spread but I will definitely be back to try more! read more

Exceptional wood-fired smokey cuisine. Simple enough menu and the dishes balance sweet, smokey, tart, and savoury so well, it's worth trying everything on the menu. I'm staying nearby so I'm hoping to eat here 8 days in a row. Will let you know how it goes. Oh yeah cocktails, but as-if that cocktail is as hard as food to nail. Just sayin'.
