I stopped by a few weeks ago for Lunch. I was on a day trip from Calgary, featuring my usual "cram it all into one day" stops. Travel Tip: The best "tourist" shopping in Banff is the gift store at the Whyte Museum. I sat downstairs at the bar. I had forgotten how international Banff can be, the person up front, the bar keep, and the folks sitting next to me all had a British accent (or so it sounded - and no I don't know the regions). A friend of mine later told me that an Irish Bar was next door. I really enjoyed the combination chowder/caesar salad combination, with some nice bread and a craft beer. The food at this restaurant was horrific. I got the filet mignon steak and it was basically unedible. I wasn't expecting an amazing steak but the meat was terrible and it was overcooked. The shrimp I got on the side had a fish flavor but at least they were edible. The meal was like $60 Canadian. My dad's food was ok but we had to fully return my mom's food. She simply said I would like the pasta noodles to be thoroughly cooked and no pepper. There was loads of pepper on the chicken. This place is expensive and not woth the price. A solid happy hour place in downtown Banff, aka tourist central. We came here after a long day of wandering around the downtown area exploring the shops, museums and doing the hot springs and gondola earlier in the day. Surprisingly we were able to get seated around 5 pm without any issue. Food wise, typical HH fare - a collection of different sandwiches, burgers, chicken wraps, and other fried foods. We definitely left full and happy. Waitress was super nice and helpful and even gave us some other recommendations to explore while we were in town. For all things considered and its location, I think this is a fair place to eat while in downtown Banff, if you are looking for something that's decently priced and delicious. read more

I had the Sirloin Jus which came with a sidecar of demi glace jus that begged for every bite of steak to be thoroughly dipped. It was also cooked to a perfect medium rare. My girlfriend had the chicken fig and brie sandwich with a side of clam chowder. It had huge chunks of clam and she raved about it. The cocktail menu is also unique and full of tasty libations. Every server avoided eye contact with us and when we finally flagged someone down, the server gives us menus. We order after a bit and he gets us our drinks. The bar staff took discourtesy to the next level that night. I counted every minute of my watch waiting for the food to arrive and no one checked in on us for sitting there that long without any food arriving. I see the same server entertaining a group of women and engaging in conversation with them, which we obviously did not receive. We had to flag him down again asking where our food was. He makes it look like he hurries down to the kitchen and comes back and claims he never put the order in. Really?? The bar was not busy, there were empty seats and he didn't wonder why people he was serving were just sitting there for 45 minutes?? He wants to comp our food but I've had it with the unwelcoming service at the restaurant. You think I would wanna spend more time in there being treated coldly and ignored??? I slammed a 20 down and angrily walked out. My husband and I drove 4 hours from Edmonton, where he is temporarily stationed for work. After that long drive, we thought we could enjoy good food. We made a mistake walking into this place. We live in LA and we've travelled all over the US and to other countries. We've eaten at many restaurants and we've never received such horrid service anywhere. The only time anyone interacted with us or checked in on us was when he had to flag someone down twice. We were ignored / avoided the rest of the time by the rest of the staff. We are a young married couple. I'm in my late 20s. My husband is in his early 30s. Not sure if we were discriminated against due to ageism or for any other reason. I'm Asian as well so that may have been a factor. I can't review the food because it never arrived. Beer was good though. BTW Our server was some dude with a British accent and he was bald with a beard and wore glasses. I've never felt so unwelcome at a restaurant. I would be okay if they treated everyone the same but everyone else at the bar they approached and refilled their drinks. I'm going to start with the one and only pro: Service was exceptionally friendly, attentive, pleasant and fast. Only reason why I have it a two star. The food, however, was very disappointing and we will never return for this reason. We got the steak and sushi and fish and chips. Steak and sushi $32: Sushi tasted like any average California roll that you get for $5. It was a decent size roll but tasted unusually cold and wasabi was dry and crusty ( similar to when it is not used for a while). The steak was cut up in pieces which I thought was strange and marinated in a very salty sauce. Beef was dry and cold :(. Fish and chips $19 were also a disappointment. Fries were small, thin and drenched in oil while the pieces of fish were tiny and had an excessive amount of greasy batter. Came with tiny portion of coleslaw. I can get better fish and chips at a food truck. Yes, server asked if food tasted good and really didn't feel like giving her a full review after hours of driving and starving. I feel like I have been ripped off and threw $80 in the garbage. Would also be nice if they had umbrellas/ water mist on the patio since we were burning outside. Went for happy hour and was rewarded with maybe the best meal during my stay (which was full of great meals!). The highlight was the fried chicken sandwich. Without hyperbolizing, this was the best fried chicken sandwich I've ever had, supplanting the previous champion Bakesale Betty's in Oakland (still amazing and a must have). The chicken was perfectly moist, the crust was ridiculously crispy, and the buffalo flavor was refined rather than overpowering. We are in the bar as the restarant had no booth. Es had fish and chips which is something she normaly dies not like but found it ok here. Fish a bit too battery. I had th Cajun chicken with warm potato salad. Had it before and it was still good. Think I will ask to swap the coleslaw for a salad next time. They have a great happy hour and weekday drink specials that are well worth the price! The staff is some of the most kind and wonderful people I ever had the pleasure of speaking to, and the food was out of this world. My favorite dish was the Crispy Tofu Zen Bowl. The tofu tasted like fried chicken (didn't know that was possible), and the rice was some of the best I've ever had. I got this dish two days in a row...it was incredible.
