The food and sushi were very good as was the service. I nearly feel out of my chair though when one of the guys came out and changed out all the serving utensils. We always go here but never ever again. I can not believe the way we were just treated. We started with soup and it was horrible but both agreed that maybe they were just having an off day. When we went to try something else it was cold and soggy, soggy egg rolls and my husband had fried catfish on his plate that was also cold and soggy as week. It was very strange because the food is usually pretty good but everyone has bad days I guess. We wanted to let the manager know because she should know so that she could fix the problem. When we told her, she straight up said that we were just trying to get out of paying and trying to rip her off. We were appalled and told her that wasn't the case at all but that she was way out of line and shouldn't treat costumers like that. We paid our $32 bill for cold soggy food that we didn't even eat, left and went to road house. Lol! Seriously though, do yourself a favor and do not eat at this establishment. I went there several times in the past and it was fine here in Houston, anyway once my husband got sick, Bonehead me, wanted to go back. Sheshhhhhh. Tonight, we arrived 9:10 pm thinking we would have almost an hour to eat, consider they advertise they close at 10:00 pm plenty of time. Oh, sweet of me.... Ok, The food was cold -the leftover food???- and even the fried fish -Health hazard all the way- was cold, they started vacuuming -I'm not kidding- around 9:25 pm or so around us, of course, the people that was there started leaving and I bet they will never be back, they were cleaning the place with Us inside!!! And they were emptying the buffet area a half of hour before the closing time, all that was way before 10:00 Pm, disrespectful;, gross, cold food, health hazard, you name it, I'm Not coming back, maybe they have a new manager because it was fine and now is a trashy place. The management made comical requirements for a small discount that just cost them the business of my entire family and anyone that will listen and understand this story. We go there for my little siblings' 12th birthdays (twins). We print out a discount for a free buffet meal for a kid's birthday. When the check comes we present it. The waiter, getting yelled at from across the room in another language, suddenly tells us that we need ID for it because they don't know if they are really 12. THEY'RE 12 THEY DON'THAVE IDs!! We kindly ask for the manager because this is getting ridiculous. The waiter begins to go towards the manager who has been barking orders at her. She doesn't even make it all way and returns. She tells us we need birth certificates. I laugh. My step-mom somehow has them her phone and VERY kindly, given this ludacrous situation we find ourselves in, goes up to the manager to present the birth certificates. She yells at her to print them out. After realizing how stupid a request the manager rescinds that request only to deny the birth certificates because they don't have pictures... My step-mom also somehow has a picture of their school ids so we finally get the discount. The rest of gave up on discount waaayyyy before this though because this was just a series of the most insane requirements for a SMALL DISCOUNT. It's a shame cause the food isn't bad, but management like that doesn't deserve to stay in business in my opinion. read more

We went to E-Star almost close to closing time so we arrived around 9:45 ish and it closes around 10:30pm on that night. The lady that took us in told us it was around closing time but we agreed that it would be fine because we would eat quickly. However, after settling down a waitress approached us with an attitude telling us that most food items are getting packed up and put away and nothing fresh will be put out. We said that it was fine but she kept bugging us about how the sushi chef leaves at 9:30 and will not make exceptions for us. We again assured her that, that was fine with us. By now some time passed but neither of us were served glasses of water but we were downing fried stuff and it was making us super thirsty. She came back and she kept counting and recounting the number of people in our party to verify the charges, she asked the ages of the kids with us several times. Finally another waitress got us a few waters but not enough for the whole family. So some of us told the problematic waitress we need more water, instead of agreeing that she would bring us more, she told us to share????? Okay then lol, odd and such a nuisance. After eating whatever we could scrap up, my sister's little daughter, my niece who is 6 years old ended up licking some of my sister's icecream. I mean how could you resist, this place barely offers much, so the icecream makes it a bit better. She took tiny nibbles of the icecream swirl until the peculiar waitress came back saying "didn't you say she wasn't going to eat?" Truth is that she wasn't, and she didn't except those tiny bits of icecream. Shes usually a happy meal kinda girl at mcdonalds and her diet doesnt experiment with much else. So my sister asked "she can't have some of my icecream?" The waitress said we charge whoever eats here, little icecream or whatever, still means she's eating. So we got tired of her behavior and demanded to see the manager who mentioned that her attitude was due to her language barrier???? Most definitely not a valid reason, we told them to charge us $1-2 for the icecream since they're desperate. We did not tip at all and my family that lives in Texas confirmed that they were appalled at their behavior and would not return. Plenty of decent buffets in Texas I am sure, this place should be boycotted by the regulars and I hope future customers find out how bad they are. I have eaten in Chinese Buffet Restaurents in Hong Kong, Singapore, Southeast Asia and the US for more than 40 years. And if I have nothing good to say, I simply keep my mouth shut and walk away. But E Star Chinese Buffet on Interstate 10 and Fry Rd South, Katy, TX, is a very good place to dine in or to take out. (We have been dining there since it opened a year ago). Wide selection, including Sushi, Spare Ribs, Pizza for the kids, and real good Chinese / Cantonese food. We go for the chinese food and the sushi and the sea shells. If you see Chinese or Asian people eating in a particular chinese restaurant, then the chinese food thereat must be good and it is. And I think I have eaten in Chinese Restaurants more than most of you over the past 40 years or so. Many Hispanics and Anglo Americans eat there, so it must be good. The decor is good, not much bright neon lights, Ru, one of the managers is very courteous and friendly. My wife and I miss her. And the staff are very good too. I do not recommend this place at all has horrible customer service and they literally stop serving food exactly at 9pm.All they have is leftovers and will not put out any more food for the paying customer at all.The manager was horrible and so disrespectful.All she did was give me $1.30 discount when they didn't even have the food I like. I will never be coming back to this establishment at all since they do not appreciate their loyal customers. They should have a sign giving warnings to the customers that walk in past 9pm telling them they should scavenger hunt for what ever is left over of food for the customers. The room design was really typical l like so call "fu caw" style buffet. Sushi sashimi was okay , Oyster was okay consider bad ... Well things are i know what i want to eat there , i really picky about the hot food and i am very much picky about sushi. My fav list : short ribs , tsao chicken , the fried craps. It was not a vietnamese style buffet so dont really expect any of the item. \ i always end it with simple ice cream with sesame topping. The services very tentative, i believe this is a standard of good chinese buffet in houston. Price wise was ok for me , consider i eat free every visit. read more

after visiting here twice, ive made up my mind. i like it! now for roughly $11-$12 per person, its a pretty good deal for what you get. they have a variety of food, but fewer things than bigger buffets like china bear, or todai. the main reason i come here, and keep coming back, is for the oysters. they have shucked fresh oysters, and its actually pretty damn good! i was surprised when it didnt taste like old 3 day seafood. i piled on plates of oysters, and sure as hell got my money's worth. the sushi bar is pretty good which was suprising considering most other places (todai, toyko one, etc) charges almost $25-$30 a person for a go around their sushi bars. the other foods are fairly the same. youve got your usual chinese buffet soups (spicy thai chicken soup, hot and sour, egg drop, etc), the usual general tso's chicken and beef and broccoli etc and the soft serve icecream machine. overall a really good value. its not super crowded, theres ample space and lots of big tvs all around. great place to have a delicious and cheap filling dinner. Wish I could give it less than 1 star. Service is okay. Managment is POOR. I was a regular here but you won't find me back anymore. In the midst of my meal, I find a long black strand of hair wrapped around my fried crabs. Obviously it doesnt belong to a customer because it looks like the hair was cooked into it. I bring this to management's attention (lady with the short boy cut) and she pulls out the hair and takes the plate. She then tells me that they are making a new batch. Um.. what makes you think I would want your new batch. I ask for the check because at this point I don't want anymore of their food. Managment completely disregards my concern and makes no effort to make my experience any better. It wasn't until my boyfriend brought this to their attention that this piece of hair had cut our meal short and that it definitely wasn't worth the price we were charged. She rudely takes my card and said okay i give you discount. Swipes my card without telling me what my new price is. Turns out it was only 10%. Obviously I'm pissed and just left with my kids. The money wasn't the biggest issue for me, it was the effort the management gave. It only shows they care less about their customers. This buffet looks really nice on the inside and outside. It's a very calm sitting, nothing too loud or chaotic. However, and it can get very packed but there's always seems to be a table or booth available. The food was very tasty, however they need to have more options and have different types of food (American, Asian, Mexican, Italian, etc). I don't like Chinese buffets b/c they usually all have the same food, and most of the time it is not fresh. Here the buffet is turned over regularly that and there are so many guests that the food is just eaten up so quickly. There is a lot of variety and the appetizers are really good. Worst experience ever and I've been coming here since they opened. Husband and I came in at 8:15. We were seated, ordered our sodas and went to get food... except there was NOTHING!!!! How did they except to charge us full price for 4 wings and 10 crab Rangoon?! They even sat a group of 10 behind us who were also unaware. We waited for more food to come out and nothing did. One of the 10 went to the manager and started complaining about being charged when there was no food and the lady said it wasn't her fault. WRONG! Been a regular here since they opened in Katy years ago. Food has always been good but have noticed it slowly degrading over time. Floors wouldn't be as clean, silverware & plates slightly dirty, food seemed to be re-heated from the day before. All these issues still weren't bad enough to keep us from coming back as they still had some very good dishes for a buffet place. This last dining experience however will be our last trip back. First noticed that the fried rice had a bit of a sour taste to it but didn't pay much attention and left it aside. Tried the noodles next and they definitely tasted sour, as if the cabbage had been left out overnight and had gone bad. Our whole table agreed and so did our waitress. She took the dish to the manager, had a few words and brought us our check as if nothing happened. No discount, no apology and the large serving of noodles remained on the buffet line. Been craving a Chinese buffet since I moved from Webster almost a year ago. But now living in Cypress, TX, there were none around. This place was recommended to me so I went to try it. It's a pretty nice place for a buffet and everything seemed fresh and looked good. As one reviewer said - the clams were overcooked (very dry) and the sushi was extensive. I went around 12pm on Saturday (which is today), and the place was not full yet. It was starting to full up quickly as we were eating. The waiter was very good with drink refills and clearing plates from our table. The price is not bad, but my 10 year old had to pay for the adult meal since only 9 and under get a discount. They had crayfish and small crabs (which were dry) but the chicken and meat dishes tasted fresh and not old like some other buffets that I tried in the past. Two stars are missing because I am comparing this one to others that I have been - no Habachi grill and no snow crabs (for dinner/ weekends). I will be back however, since there is little or no choice for buffets in my area. read more

It's about time I write a review for this place. The hubby and I have been going here since they opened. As far as Chinese buffet goes, this one is excellent. Clean, nice decor, friendly service, and a lot of variety. Also, because they are always busy the food gets rotated and refilled frequently. They've maintained their level of excellence since opening about 3 years ago. Surprisingly, my least favorite item is probably their fried rice. The vegetables in their dishes seem fresh and plentiful. You'll also find a good variety of entrees, and not an abundance of cheap, fried, filler foods that lower-end Chinese buffet always seem to have on hand. Seafood items typically offered are: baked salmon, fried calamari, Salt & Pepper Shrimp, small Steamed Clams, baked Mussels with Cheese, an array of Sushi (maki, nigiri, sashimi). Seasonally they'll have crawfish or whole crabs. Typical dessert offerings such as fresh fruit, small pastries, and the requisite soft-serve ice cream machine. Last night, I threw caution to the wind and tried the cold sliced Mango Chili-Cilantro salad. Interesting. If you're not going to the typically higher-quality seated, "order off the menu" restaurant such as Hong Kong's Cafe; E-Star is the best option in Katy for Chinese buffet. read more

Upon entering there are several signs to ensure you are wearing a mask...expected. The sign also states that you must EITHER wear gloves OR use hand sanitizer upon going to the buffet. We asked for a table for two and the host grabbed two sets of gloves with his UNGLOVED hands. My husband and I both stated that we'd prefer to use the hand sanitizer that was provided and promptly used it to ensure our hands were germ free. He walked away and a random lady came over and began YELLING at us that we have to use gloves. I pointed to the sign that said we had a choice of gloves or sanitizer and she continued to yell (not an exaggeration) that we had to use gloves because customers complained and can't tell if our hands are clean or not. I asked her to please stop yelling at me at which point she got louder and shoved plastic gloves in my face with her UNGLOVED hands. Needless to say, we left. I don't know if it was the under cooked rice? Over-cooked veggies? or semi-flavorless meats. I was left with a feeling it could be a lot better in preparation. I even showed up when they first opened to get the freshest food possible. It didn't help, it as if they prepared the food then at the very end added sauces and salt/pepper for flavor, which made it taste overly salty/peppery or sweet from the sauce. It would be a lot better if it was marinated then cooked then added a little flavor at the end. Pretty standard Chinese buffet fare offered here. They do have a large selection of varying dishes along with some American items such as pizza, sausage, and chicken. The place is crowded, but they do a good job of keeping items filled and changed out on the buffet. I like the varied sushi items offered as well as the dessert options. Lunch buffet is about $8 and consists of Chinese food and sushi. The chicken was a little tough and heavily battered while the shrimp was a little overcooked. The beef was not as tough. The sushi is ok but does have a lot of rice in the center. In my opinion the lunch buffet was ok. I prefer paying a little extra for places like Tokyo One Buffet. But overall not bad.
