Then when we said that was very expensive they asked me what I was willing to pay ? What would I counter off ? When I said $200. They said No. Then I had to pay a $39. Service fee. ( I did expect to pay that) and they didn't give me a receipt for that.... I ended up calling Ojai Valley rooter. They did an excellent job and they guaranteed their work. We found Dutton Plumbing on a Phonebook Ad, they were a great company to work with. They sent photos of the technicians that would be coming. Edgar and Ken cleaned out 30 year old lines. After Ken cleared the line he sent a camera through the line all the way to the street to show my husband it was completely clear. We also got a transferable 2 year warranty. Originally quoted $99 to unclog bathroom drain. Then came out and messed around for an hour before telling my wife that there was something blocking deep down main drain and they would have to use a special camera to find out what it was and this would cost $250. My wife agreed to pay and they proceeded only to say that they still could not find the source and would have to run a new pipe under the slab and out around the side of house to front at a cost of $13,000. That price would cover jack hammering the slab, digging outside ground & laying down new pipe. My wife paid the $250 with still having a clogged drain. When I came home I called to have them come out and finish the job or refund our money. He came out and told me that they never tried to snake from the roof because company policy was they were not allowed on the roof. OMG! Are you kidding me? We have had many other companies snake from roof vent. I went to Home Depot and purchased a power snake and unclogged the drain from roof vent myself. Terrible service and experience. My mom got work done and they kept coming back saying there were more issues. Spent over $10,000 and everything backed up a week later. They come back and give her another $16,000 estimate to get things running. Long story short they do another $4,000 job and run into issues and can't proceed without permits and tearing up her concrete. We are almost a month later and she's requested invoices and breakdowns on the work done to get a second opinion and they can't supply any invoices. Keep telling her they sent them and they never did. Finally she calls her lender and they charged her over $4000 for work they never completed. Spoke to Steve, Randy, Cindy you name em they were un able to help! Can't reach a manager, can't supply invoices nothing! Finally I step in and call and call and threaten to report them and some more threats and I finally get a call from the GM CHRIS who apologized says he'd get things figured out... etc. he calls us yesterday AFTER A MONTH with an invoice. We are still unsure as to why they charged her and additional $8200 when the work was never completed and all he can do is apologize and see how to try and get her her money back. No offer to discount her job to keep her as a customer and make things right, nothing! Seriously after charging her $4200 unauthorized!!!!!! We were supposed to get videos of before and after and they send videos of the concrete and some others. None of the over $14,000 of work she supposedly had done. How do I describe it? Extend a dryer gas line 8 feet along the outside of a wall with three 90 deg bends and replace washer hot and cold water valves. I anticipated maybe $400. For maybe four hours and about $30 parts. Appliance vendor was there converting dryer and I obviously needed this done today. When I was quoted $1340 I about fainted. No way! He then said he'd see what he could do and adjusted to $890. Still shocked but I was stuck. Nice guy, good work, but I felt taken. Arbitrary extreme quote and arbitrary $450 reduction? There doesn't seem to be a rate base used with this company. Turned out to be a 5 hour job at over $150/hr. I should have rejected, eat the hours lost taking the day off work and called someone else, but I would have lost that much taking off another day of work. Got me! Ask what the hourly rate is and compare before you have them come out. I don't believe it would be $150/hr. read more

Fortunately at that point my mother called me to let me know what she was doing. When she told me the price i immediately knew this company was ripping her off. I advised the sales person over the phone that there is no deal and he is to go away immediately. Unbelievably he initially refused until calling his "home office". I'm curious what he need to call his home office for. To get authority to rip off an elderly person? Ironically this company's website says "The plumber you'd send to your mom's house." This has all to do with the call service. I was trying to do some plumming repairs over the weekend and needed help. With my water turned off until repair was made, I call Dutton yesterday (Sunday) and left a message with their service. I received a call back within the hour from a lady that unfortunately can't recall her name. I told her the situation I was facing and she said someone could come out Monday. I asked her for a quote for the job. I was told there would be a service call and at that time the Plummer would give me an estimate. I asked would it be possible to tell one of her experience plummer my problem, something I am sure they have seen before and possibly get me an estimate, a ballpark figure so at least I knew what I was looking at? I told her to pay a service fee and have absolutely no idea of their pricing at all seemed unfair on my part. Her response, "My plummers need to put food on their family's table." I was shocked at such an answer and told her so. As luck would have it, another Plummer who I had called returned my call about 20min after. I told the plummer the exact situation I was facing (as I did with Dutton) and received an estimate, amazing huh!?!? The plummer came out this morning, fixed my problem and charged me what the estimate was, sounds pretty simple. read more

We called on Monday 12/23 for a drain cleaning. We were told by the customer service that we will help you guys today and that they have a cleaning special. After an hour we get a call from another person saying they don't have anyone for the day and reschedule us for Thursday 12/26. After not hearing from them today on the 26th I followed up and I was told that my appointment was rescheduled to 1/2/20 without any notice. To me this is not a good customer service. If your company is very busy and can't provide services in shorter time line it is only fair to inform your customer of the situation from the beginning and let them decide if they would like to wait or not, instead of making appointments that you cannot fulfill. read more

I called made an appt and was canceled on and rescheduled 3 times for a drain clearing. Finally, I told them that it was not okay that they reschedule and they sent a tech, nice guy, who was on his way home to come to my house. The guy fixed the problem but it was kinda expensive. I would avoid if you actually want them to come out when scheduled. The tech was nice and knowledgeable and the customer service lady was also nice. We bit the bullet and went for a complete repiping. It was not cheap but these guys were exceptional. Their work was excellent and their communication was better than any other contractors we have dealt with. We recommend them highly. Just be ready for the cost. We had used Dutton Plumbing once in the past when we needed help with our RO system and were pleased with their customer service and quality of work. So, while having new flooring installed, and unexplained moisture in areas of the concrete were discovered, Dutton Plumbing was who we called. The flooring install had to stop mid-way until the source of the leak (if any) was determined. Understanding our issue, our technician, Juan Rendon arrived quickly and conducted a thorough investigation of our water lines and sewer system which didn't appear to be the source of the problem. To be certain, a second technician, Paul stopped by and double checked everything. Our issue did not appear to be plumbing related. Thank God! Did I mention this was happening around 6 pm at night? Juan even called us the next day to follow-up after we had leak detection company come out, just to see if he could help. (It was determined the problem was caused by a leaky vinyl dual paned sliding door that had slowly seeped over many years and settled on several areas of the floor) Juan and Paul were awesome and went above and beyond to provide excellent customer service! read more

Our kitchen sink backed up, called Dutton in Semi Valley using a $59 coupon to clean our drain. Service was prompt. However, plumber never came in to look at sink or dishwasher. Simply applied snake to exterior drain and reported it was backed up at the the far end and it would require a camera? Gave me an estimate for $865.00 to do that. I told him to forget the camera just run the snake as best as he can. He did, but he said I would till have a problem. He left and about a day or two after same problem. But this time I called another plumber recommended by my neighbor. I didnt tell him that I had Dutton day earlier. He put a snake into the drain and said it was blocked and he cleared it. I asked if I would need a camera to be sure? He replied why? The drain was cleared. It was just pugged at the end and he cleared it. His charge $99.00 and no further problems. The technician sent out does great work but tries hard to sell more than you want. Charged an outrageous price just to install a new faucet. Then he broke the supply valve to the house. It was a gate valve which is easy to jam if you over tighten. I had just operated this valve less than a month ago to replace a supply valve to one of our toilets, it was working fine then. PENDING DISCIPLINARY ACTION by the California Contractor's licence Board (check out State website) Obscenely Over Priced! Serial Liars! Professional Actors! Pressure Sales with Extremely Vague Written Estimates and Phony Discounts! Here's the short version. They came to fix a clogged drained and turned it into a 24K job replacing all the drain lines...so we thought! We called them a month later when the toilet clogged and found out that they did not include the toilet line in the 24K line replacement and wanted an additional 20K to replace this toilet line! Dutton stuck a camera down my drain and stated that the pictures told them that our toilet drain line was gone. I asked for a detailed estimate and got a 15-word statement with just a total price and was then offered a "phony" discount if I signed up at that moment. We went to another plumber and found out that Dutton's evaluation that our drain was rusted out and "Bottom-less" was a lie. The new plumber stated that the line was in good condition and fixed the problem replacing the flanges below the toilets for a third of the Dutton price. Dutton has a price list for different projects with amounts that they made up in their heads and has no bearing on market value. This is why they try to pressure you into approving the work before having a chance to get another bid or even verifying that the work needs to be done. Since labor and parts are not itemized on their estimates and they don't even have a solid description of the finished work, you will have a tough time comparing Dutton bids with other plumbers. These guys come to your home, they are very friendly, and pretend to be on your side while it's all part of the con to stick you with an overprice repair bill....professional actors! The owner of Dutton Plumbing must have a sick sense of humor when he advertises that they are the Plumbers that you would send to your mother. He hopes that you do! And they will drain her savings account if they can! Save yourself a lot of money and don't deal with these guys, and if you do, then make sure you get several bids. One last comment; on their second trip to our house we told them that they broke a sprinkler line when trenching for the new drain lines and they ignored us and didn't offer to fix it...they have very poor customer service after getting the money. Total rip-offs. Several years ago I came home to a broken water main at 1am. I dug up the the front yard to reveal the broken pipe and shut off the water. The next day I called several plumbers and Dutton was the only one who could come out that day so I had them come and look. So rather than just repairing the burst pipe, the tech opened their "price book" and told me something in the neighborhood of 700.00. Now that price included digging up the yard in which I had already done. Well being caught in a tight spot (and they knew it) I had to agree to their overinflated price. Then then quoted me 8900.00 to replace the mater main. Thank god my regular plumber was available within 2 days cause he only charged me 750.00 to do the entire water main. And yes he replaced from the meter to the the house. A savings of 8700.00. read more

RIP OFF ARTISTS!! I'm a Owner / property Manager with homes in Santa Barbara & Ventura. I'm a very capable tradesman in plumbing & electrical and was to busy on another job to drive down to Ventura when I got a call for a hot water heater that stopped working. This machine was dated installed in 2012. And was ready for a replacement. I called Dutton as I don't have any contacts in south county for this. I asked them to bring a 40 gallon water heater and give me a bid to install it. 2 hours later I get a phone call and the plumber is acting like it's a big job or an inconvenience for him to have to replace it. It's mounted outside of the home with a plywood box around it. I don't think that there is an easier job in the industry. Well after a bunch of back and forth conversations and him calling HQ. He tells me it's going to be $3400. And wants to proceed. It's now 4:15 on Thursday afternoon and he knows nobody else is coming to bid it. I tell him that it's a $700 hot water heater and he tells me that I don't know what I'm talking about. I send this piece of over priced shit walking and have to put my tenant up in a hotel for the night so he has Hot water. I leave Friday morning from SB, pick up a brand new Rheem 40 gallon slim for $540 at the parts house, and drive to Ventura. Just less than 2 hours after I arrive at the house, I am packed up, new unit installed, replaced all lines from my truck and now it's time to drive back home. #*!$ing over priced assholes with a great radio presence. These guys wanted me to pay them $1300 an hour for a beginner plumber. Then I asked to talk to the owner of the company, they said he was on vacation and would call me when he returned. When my home warranty company couldn't get a technician out to replace my water heater for four days, I was finally given authorization to find my own service, contacted Dutton, and they were able to have a technician here first thing in the morning. Enter Cole Colvin - incredibly friendly, professional, and thorough. He showed up right on time, immediately identified the issues, and then went through the various options for remedying the situation, making sure I was fully informed of the costs. He then suffered through an agonizing call with my warranty company, negotiating back and forth with their claims department for what seemed like hours, in order to make sure that they signed off on the cost of the repairs before he started work. He showed an amazing amount of patience for dealing with this and care for making sure I didn't wind up on the hook for the bill. Once that finally was cleared, he got right to work, replaced the water heater and removed the old one in less time than the phone call took. His demeanor and professionalism really helped during this frustrating situation. For the other reviews complaining about prices - no, Dutton won't be cheap, but like so many things, you get what you pay for. Let me start off that I knocked off a star because of their price. After talking with others you have had their house repiped and doing more research, the cost was excessive for only a 1,800 square foot house (2 baths and 2 story). Their slogan says "We are the plumbers that you would send to your mom's house.... well, your mom better be loaded and not on a fixed income or she will be soaked. I have dealt with them twice in last 6 months. The first time was a semi big job of replacing some of the drains, the second was a huge job removing all the corroded 1950's galvanized pipes and re-piping the house. I was aware from other plumbers and pictures taken in the crawl space that the old pipes were corroded and leaking, so I wasn't surprised about having to replace them. It was long overdue. Having said that, I do trust them and feel that they have done a good job. I have dealt with about 14 employees from, customer service, dispatchers, field supervisors, and techs. They are an organized, professional company, and every one that I came in contact with were polite, courteous, and professional, and timely. We had a time constraint and they did their best to make sure the job was done, and the inspector came to the house before we left. The tech crew Caleb, Martin, Cole and sorry for the others names I forgot were great. Marc R and Ken J. did a great job coordinating and expediting the whole thing. I shoved too many carrot peels down the kitchen drain and stopped up the pipes. My husband didn't want to bother me at work for a phone number, so he called Dutton instead of our regular plumbing company. The Dutton plumbers claimed they couldn't fix the stopped up drain without digging up our yard and replacing all our pipes. They wanted to charge us was $18,000. Needless to say, three hours later, our regular plumber unplugged our drain, saving us $17,851. read more

Got a phone call this morning informing me that they will call when a plumber is available. Simple: highway robbery. Their prices are so far above any reasonable amount, I cannot believe people continue to use them. You are NOT getting what you pay for. Unless they are using NASA engineers, solid gold pipes, diamond studded fittings, washers cut from rich Corinthian leather, and guaranteeing it for the life of your children's children's children. I called for a kitchen trap replacement. His first verbal estimate was "around $500". After I was told I need a new water heater and a whole house filtration system (can't help but laugh at that), I was given an official estimate of $750 for just the trap replacement. I said, "Thanks, I'll be in touch." I called Oaks Drain who did the trap replacement and even ran a snake in our slow-draining bathtub, for a total of $180. I had to eat the Dutton service call minimum ($69), which is why I'm taking the time to write this. They probably figure $69 is enough to send guys around making outrageous quotes and maybe land a few jobs because people are either ignorant or desperate. In other words, their business model is taking advantage of people. Isn't that nice. Don't waste your time or money. read more

We've been using Dutton for years. Their plumbers/technicians know what they are doing. However, They NEVER arrive when they say. They usually postpone you two or three times (which is DAYS!) before the actual plumber arrives. They'll call you and give you a time when the plumber is supposed to arrive but you should add at least 30 minutes to the estimated time. Last Friday the person arrived to do some routine maintenance on my water heater and whole-home filter. We also need our yard drains cleaned and flushed. He did a good job but forgot to screw the drain covers in place and it took 5 days (!) to get him back for an 8 minute fix! His initial arrival for the water heater and filter was postponed by two days because of the typical Dutton process. Imagine having to reschedule your day three times. This is what they have done to us for years! So tired of their constant apologies for the delays. My bad for continuing to use them for so long. That stops today! Goodbye Dutton. read more

DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY!! Long story below but for those who don't want to read everything... even the son of the owner of this company says to never use it! We recently moved and a week into living here both the shower and the toilet in the same bathroom backed up. We have a home warranty, but the service charge for that warranty was more expensive than for Dutton to come out and snake so we went with the $73 snaking option. That's when the upselling and shenanigans began. Midway through snaking, the technician told us that things looked weird and they needed to bring out a camera to see what's truly going on. We had a coupon for a free camera with a drain cleaning so we figured why not - it's not going to cost anything extra anyway. Two days later the technician and his boss come out with the camera. They tell us there's a blockage and the camera can't get passed 9 feet of the pipe (despite the snake making it 100 feet two days earlier). They then went through the other access point and said it's bad news, we need new pipes, and they recommend tearing up the bathroom (newly renovated) and foundation and lying a completely new pipe line. This would cost $30k, but they highly recommended us do the whole house for the bargain price of $45k. This price would not include us putting the bathrooms, kitchen, etc. back together after tearing up the foundation. After a few days, we were able to calm down and think logically about the whole situation. We were not about to fork over $30-45k without doing some research. A friend of a friend is a plumber in San Diego so we sent him the quote which included pictures to which he said everything looks normal with our pipes and this whole process is unnecessary. He also mentioned the drain clearing wasn't done very well based on the pictures. We then called another local plumber who worked for another friend for years. We were willing to pay for this plumber to come out, but he spoke to us about the whole situation on the phone and told us there's no need for him to come and cost us money because everything is fine. He also added that the process that Dutton described is not a real thing, there's almost never a reason to tear up the foundation, that Dutton is known for upselling and their technicians will get fired if they don't reach their sales quotas. On the plus side we saved $45k, but I'm sure that many other people have been taken by this "used car salesman" of a plumbing company. As another fun fact (and as mentioned earlier), I was speaking to a coworker about this whole situation and he mentioned that he knew the son of Dutton Plumbing and this son couldn't stand working for it because of the upsell so he quit his dad's company and even told my coworker to NEVER use DUTTON! It speaks volumes that someone within the Dutton family says not to use them. read more

Dutton told me they would have to rip out my entire shower to fix a leak, Grand total $11,000, of course they had a convenient finance plan. Thankfully I had a home warranty who was contracted with AAA plumbing. He came out and let us know all we needed was a new seal and how to do it ourselves.
