This is a joke! My water heater pilot light went out; the gas company came out and told me there is a gas leak in the thermostat. I called Payless Water Heater & Plumbing and the 'technician' (mind you not a licensed plumber)attempted to light the pilot but was not able to. He said the gas control valve needs to be replaced. He said it would take about 45 minutes and it would be a charge of $629. The water heater is still under warranty so that price is only labor!!!! I called a licensed plumber, he took his time and was able to light pilot; hot water is on and no repair required ... What a racket this company is!!! Who makes $629 for 45 minutes of work .... BUYER BEWARE with this company! I had to pay $59 for a 'service call' and he gave an incorrect diagnosis ... so sad. UPDATE: Per telephone conversation with Payless Water Heater management, they have decided to revisit their pricing structure -- especially for small repairs. I don't usually leave reviews unless I've experienced EXCELLENT SERVICE because life is just too crazy busy. Water heater issues started when my son was leaving somewhere through the garage and saw the water heater leak all over the garage floor. He acted right away to shut off the valve to a 2014 40 gallon Rheem water heater. Luckily that stopped the flood, but I was praying someone would be open on Veterans Day! We got a couple of estimates for a new water heater over the phone which included a $250-$300 emergency fee. It was nice that they gave an estimate to get an idea of what one would cost. When I finally called Payless (recommended by my brother), I was put in contact right away by a very kind woman who screened the calls but it must have been something in her voice (and perhaps in my stressed voice) that calmed me down and told me to wait the next day for the 10 am-12 pm slot she assigned me. I explained to her the situation and she even waived the $59 fee or so (can't remember now) to come and take a look. As 10:00 am rolled around, I was alerted by a text message that Juan C. was on his way--which included a picture of this handsome tech, so I would know who to look for! Well he got here and man oh man, one of the sweetest and genuine smiles I've ever had the pleasure of meeting when it comes to house repairs. I told him how strapped I was being on disability as well as being a single parent (with no help from the ex, just stating facts, not bashing him), who also has a roommate to help out with the mortgage. He totally understood with compassion after going through the lowest of their packages to the nicest ones, we settled on one of the tankless options because I wanted something that was going to last as well as add to the sale of my home should it come down to it. I would not have been able to do this had they not worked with me on the payments! Juan made one call to his office and they gave me a discount and I'm so grateful, like BEYOND grateful. I know this will pay off one day, so I knew the investment was inevitable. Please don't think twice with this company, just make the call and have them explain in detail all of the packages. There are many companies I could've gone with, but I knew being referred to by my brother and upon meeting the sweet woman on the phone AND upon meeting Juan C., I had peace about the purchase. Juan C. wasn't one of the regular techs out in the Moorpark area, but because everyone else was busy, they sent him to make the trek from the Santa Clarita area and boy am I grateful that he did. He took about five hours and left the new area with the tankless tank completely dust-free, without a single piece of debris! He even took all of the flooded water out of the garage and it looks SO GOOD! He was precise with every action he took and I could not have been happier to see him haul that old huge clunker away. I cannot emphasize the amount of trust it took me to agree to such a much needed investment. He was so kind, transparent, and real. Prices are reasonable and very competitive to what's out there, plus this unit has a 25 year warranty! Their motto is "Let our family take care of yours!" and they surely did! My son, my roommate, and I are so stoked with the new water heater and for our new family at Payless Water Heaters and Plumbing, we THANK YOU SO MUCH! We had a really bad thunderstorm last night, and we found our tankless water heater was not working in the morning. There was no power to it, so I checked the house subpannel and none of the breakers were tripped, nor were any in the main panel. It was at this point I decided to call in help, and Payless was the first responses on yelp. I really appreciated their reviews and the fact we were told there would be a $59 fee at the very beginning. At around 10am I was able to book a 12 to 2pm appointment for the same day, and our plumber got here before 12pm. It turned out our water heater goes through a gfi outlet on the back of our house that tripped last night during the storm. One flick later, and we had hot water. We also asked about some improvements we have been looking for. We got great info on adding a pump to help get hot water to the farthest part of our loop (our showers) faster. All in all a great call out for speed, easy of fix, and the price. read more

They tried to rip me off and lied to me. I recommend you find a different company. I had no hot water, I diagnosed the problem myself that the thermopile was faulty. I checked with the manufacturer Bradford White that the unit and components were still fully covered under warranty. Payless Water Heaters came out and came to the same diagnosis, faulty thermopile. They quoted me $860 and refused to honor the warranty and tried to charge me for the parts. I told them to leave. I got Thousand Oaks plumbing to come out, they quoted me $400 (just labor) for the job and got it done. You need to check if your water heater is under warranty or not before you call out a plumber. They get the parts from their local supplier and get fully reimbursed from the manufacturer for any replacement parts that are under warranty and should only charge you for labor. read more

We chose your company because of its strong ratings, but unfortunately, our recent experience has been disappointing. During the repair, your technician accidentally broke a pipe and left the job incomplete, resulting in no water supply. We understand accidents happen, but we were very disappointed that the situation was not handled properly, and we were subsequently left with no running water and no call back from anyone at your company. When technician called my husband out to show him the broken pipe, he stated someone will call you from the office and have another plumber come out and fix it. 2 hours later, no call, no one came out and NO WATER! We called them several times, and the manager told me the plumber on their list is not calling them back, (so maybe take them off your list). In the meantime, I have no water, he says, "I don't know what to tell you", rather than assisting or providing a resolution, he suggested that I call another plumber to handle the work their company left incomplete. This response only added to the frustration and inconvenience of an already difficult situation. Additionally, we were charged $2,300 for the service, which included a reimbursement of only $149.00 for a ball valve that was not installed (per the manager, this is including labor). As I am sure you are aware, the installation of a ball valve is way more than that, (I called other plumbers). As of today, we have not received any call or inquiry to check whether the issue was resolved or if we had water restored. They do not care about their customers. read more

Our water heater busted after 14 years. Water all over the garage. I called the local plumbing company which we have previously used and which does good work. They came out that day and quoted me $4,100 for a replacement gas-heated tank, $4,100 for an electric-heated tank and $11,000 for an electric-heat pump combination. I called Payless and they sent David out to give me a bid later that afternoon. David explained to me that the heat pump combo qualified for a rebate of $3,100. That evening he sent me the quotes for the gas and the electric. After a lot of thought and considering the additional cost of hiring an electrician, we opted for the gas tank. Total cost: $2,400. The warranty offered by the local plumbing company was six years for the tank and six years for any labor. I could have got the same warranty from Payless for $3,500. I did my research and decided that I didn't need much of a warranty, opting for four years on the tank and one year on the labor. As a friend of mine said, if it's a bad tank I'm gonna know right away. David was great. All he does is install water heaters, maybe two a day. He documented every.step.of.the.way with photographs and explained everything to me. The job was a tad tricky with some exposed (?) wiring and questionable decisions by other plumbers over the years. David was a pro and worked with and around everything. He went above and beyond in terms of service. Payless is the way to go when it comes to water heaters. By the way, if we were planning to be in our home another 20 years, we would have upgraded with the electric tank with + heat pump, especially because we have solar. read more

Bought a water heater from Payless a couple of years ago. After about a year the control unit went bad. The pilot light would not stay lit. Payless said it was covered by warranty and was replaced at no cost, I believe. But this week the pilot light again has gone out several times and I've had to relight it each time. They today came out again and again say the control unit needs replaced. However they now need to charge me labor. I thought okay that's fair, maybe 100 to $200 However they proposed charging me an outrageous $599. Even if they pay their guy $50 an hour and make a 100% profit and it takes two to three hours, $200 to $300 would be fair. I said I would only pay $299. They turned it down to my dismay. I do not recommend Payless. They do not have the integrity to charge a fair amount. On the other hand their technician Jose was very professional and did a great job putting the unit back together. I figure this water heater, a Braddock White, is a lemon. Will likely buy a different brand of water heater from another company. Hopefully I will have a better experience. read more

I am happy with the service I received. I came home late from work to a leaky pipe above my gas water heater. My shut off valve was corroded open, so I shut off the water to my property at my meter and turned the gas to "Vacation" on my hot water tank. This was not something I could fix, myself at Home Depot. I found Payless the next morning on Yelp. They were the second plumber as the first couldn't make it before noon and I had to be back at work. I talked to a human and made my appointment. Danny arrived on time, gave me straight answers, discussed repairs with me honestly, and confirmed I would make it to work on time. He welded a new bendable copper, outgoing pipe and a new shut off valve on the incoming pipe, above my huge water heater, in my dirty hot water closet. It was pouring rain, right next to where he was working. He did a great job. I'm not greedy. The price is good and comparable to today's costs. I had an hour to get ready for work and made it there on time. Everything is in great working order. What could have been a nightmare, turned out to be a little bump in my routine for me. I'm happy.
