Called Payless yesterday. David quickly responded. Not an easy job in the crowded space of my garage. In the past, I've replaced the Water Heater myself but I've learned since then that several things needed to be done to bring it up to code. Besides the Water Heater, David added a leak protection pan, audible water alarm system , upgrade gas safety system with valve, new safety straps, and the city permit. I've been contemplating this review for several months, and then simply forgot to post. A few months ago, our water heater failed, and we thought,, well, this is an inconvenience, but at least it's under warranty. Then, in my opinion, the scam Payless runs was clear. They highlight the warranty during the sale, but they don't tell you the warranty is between Payless and the water heater company, it's not between you and the water heater company. It's in THEIR best interest if the water heater fails. They get the new heater under the warranty, and then charge a significant amount to install the new one, at, essentially the same cost as an entirely new system. I asked if they could drop off the new heater and we would have it installed by a different plumber, for a SIGNIFICANT amount less, and the answer was no. I pushed back on the cost, and they agreed to drop the install fee by $300 (give or take) if we didn't get the required permit. Do NOT purchase a water heater from this company. It is their best interest if it fails. They make 'free' money. Incredibly disappointing. read more

Daniel was here as scheduled and did an immediate estimate for replacement of our OLD water heater. Because of the age of the past installation there were many upgrades required for code enforcement. Payless pulled a city permit and Daniel started to work. Daniel worked and completed the complete installation and clean up in a two hour window. He explained all the operation of the new unit with patience and expertise. In about one hour we were taking nice hot showers. The price was competitive and the unit has a 9 year warranty. Stay away from this company they are incredible dishonest. My water heater blew up today and they came out for a free estimate. My wife was home and the technician said it was $3000 to replace and fix. Is this a good price or not? I don't know and that's not the point of the review. Here is where the blatant dishonesty comes in. The second option was for the technician to do a work around that he quoted $320 so we could have cold water in the house and use the other water heater until this was replaced. It would literally have taken 1 second. I came home, laterally turned the valve above the water heater a total of 2 seconds and we have cold water in the house. He wanted to charge $320. My water heater which was only 6.5yr old broke/was leaking water and I needed to get it repaired. Payless was going to send someone out right away (no days of waiting). I was also told over the phone that the leaking water probably meant I needed a new water heater. Once the technician Jose arrived, he confirmed that a new water heater was needed. He commented that because I have hard water (in Camarillo) that this contributed to the water heater breaking down, even tho I have water softener. I was surprised by the cost, so he talked to me about how to lower the price, plus he got me in touch with the manager right on the spot. The manager understood my issue and my concern that it was only a 6.5yr old water heater that broke, and that the cost of a new one was higher than I expected. He offered me 2 different types of financing, personalizing it to my situation. Since a lot of the other equipment needed besides the water heater was only 6yr old and in good condition, the cost of the replacement was able to be reduced. Jose took a lot of time with me as I considered the options, waiting and answering questions. It was the end of the day so Jose came back at a scheduled time the next morning to do the job, and he was very fast at completing the install. Also, I opted to do the permit input myself, but could not fill out the form correctly, so Payless had me leave a message for the woman who handles that at their company, and since I'm hard to get in touch with due to the nature of my work, she completely filled it out for me and sent it via email so I could just email it to my town's building dept. the individual who came to our house was very nice and knew his stuff except when it came to what was actually wrong with our water heater. maybe it was just a mistake, but he was very sure that parts needed to be ordered or we needed to completely replace our water heater as we were not getting hot water throughout the house. we decided to hold off and have a family friend come check it out for a second opinion as we didn't want to spend money if we didn't have to. basically our pilot light had been turned off possibly due to the heat and so he relit it and now we have hot water again. so I'm not sure if he just missed that but knowing we almost spent upwards of $5,000 for a new water heater when the pilot light was out just doesn't sit right. read more
