I was excited when a friend told me about Dun Huang in Syosset. I know there is a Dun Huang in Flushing which I've been to before, so it was music to my ears to hear that there was another authentic chinese noodle / burger place to hit up close to home. The place itself is located right next to the Syosset LIRR station. There isn't a lot of parking in the front so it's probably best to park in the LIRR parking lot in the back. Inside, it's pretty tiny as there are about 3 tables for dine in, but I was able to dine in without any trouble during the 3 times I've visited. I always get the signature Lanzhou beef noodle ($10) and either the pork burger ($4.50) or a spicy cumin lamb burger ($5). Both items are pretty good IMO. Everything about the noodles is pretty satisfying; the broth is substantial, and the chili oil they put in is not very spicy at all but adds a small needed kick. The noodle texture is pretty good too and it all comes together nicely. Nothing too special about the lamb burger, but it is a bit spicy and pretty satisfying to eat along with the more neutral broth of the noodles. I got a pork burger the last time I went, and that's pretty good too. If you get both a noodle and burger, you should leave pretty full and satisfied. So I would give this place 4 stars, but one pretty annoying thing about this place is that they charge for water. I don't understand why they do this; it'd be hard to believe they're not able to serve water normally without charge just like every other restaurant, but it's the case here. So I have to dock a star for that reason. Otherwise, I feel like the food is pretty solid and a welcome addition to the Long Island food scene.

Braised beef noodle soup

I've been waiting for a long time for this place to open. 3 years to be exact but it was well worth the wait. To finally have an authentic hand pulled noodle place has me finally feeling like moving to long Island wasn't such a bad idea. A short and sweet menu which covers everything you could want without making you feel overwhelmed. We've tried the signature noodles but the braised beef is the standout and a must have. Perfectly tender beef, spicy broth without being too spicy where you can't taste anything and a portion of both meat and noodles that leave you full. We've also had the zha Jiang noodles which is another winner. You will not regret coming here. We've only gotten take out, but they do have two small tables to eat in,but think food court quick type of seating. Very impressed and super pleased they are finally open. Clean restaurant and even nicer staff. Best noodles I've had in a very long time!

I want to start off by saying i had to instantly knock down one star since they do not serve water that is not bottled and cost $1. i read this in another review as i was waiting to order . (we instead went for boba next door and bringing it in) This place was decently busy on a sunday morning. the prices are a little bit steep ($10 for 6 soup dumplings) compared to bayside and flushing. - hand pulled noodles were the only redeeming factor. you could see the guy in the back pulling them to different thicknesses. great texture. chewy and no mushy - the different soup was bland and oily (you could tell there was added MSG) and overall disappointing. the best by far was the braised beef noodle soup, had the deepest beef flavor over the lanzhou broth. You could tell instantly the lanzhou noodles had less flavor since the broths were very clear. -- good beef ratio the soups. -- the lanzhou soup was pictured with pickled cabbage, but when the bowl came out it was thinly sliced radish?? - as for the soup dumplings, they had thick skin and broke easily when picking them up from the steam basket - service: the waitress had a slight attitude when we mentioned that one meal was forgotten. but she quickly brought it bthe bathroom has a faint smell of cigarettes and so did the front door when the chef went out for breaks during our meal.

We were really excited to try this place after seeing it had opened in Syosset. They're definitely very popular with a steady flow of customers for the 25 or so mins we were there waiting for our takeout order. Large families were dining in and a lot were doing takeout. There's convenient street parking right in front plus it's only a few doors down from Coco. We got about $70 worth of food, sadly they were out of their Chinese burgers so we'll have to try them next time. Shockingly when we got home, our Signature Beef Lanzhou noodles had no beef whatsoever in the broth container and there was only one sad bok choy floating in it. And in our Mala noodles, no bok choy to be found. Just broth. No scallions or anything else either. The flavor of the broths were nice and noodles were good after we quickly blanched them (as instructed on the soup container) but lack of meat or choy was really disappointing. Their fries were good but hubby had hoped they'd be crispy plus they were curly fries but just crinkle cut ones. The crab meat soup dumplings and the eggplant were on point as was their beef pan fried noodles (great chew and flavor). We'll give them another try but will for sure check there's meat included as promised next time.

Wontons in Spicy Chili Oil

Stopped by on a Wednesday night with the little cousins and my younger brother after seeing that this place finally opened. I was pretty worried because I haven't really had great experiences eating out in LI and since this place is new, it was a shot in the dark. But they did not disappoint! We started with the sweet and sour ribs, spiced cumin lamb burger, and wonton in chili oil. The ribs were alright, pretty small pieces and not like the regular rack of ribs. It was a little oily as that's a common theme here. The cumin burger was great! We only got 1 to share and I actually wanted to get some more to try. The meat was tender and was perfectly spiced. The cumin cut through really well too and overall, it was a good balance. The wonton in chili oil was in a soup and not doused in hot chili oil like I was used to. The wonton stuffing was average and tasted like something I could make at home. Definitely a homemade vibe! Pretty good. We ordered two orders of the braised beef noodle soup and it was packed with flavor! A little salty for me since I don't eat super salty food but my brother thought it was perfect and he's super picky (always complaining about food being bland). Not too salty where I felt like I had to chug water but just enough that I made a note of it. The meat also wasn't the braised beef I'm used to when ordering this dish. But overall, this was a great bowl of noodles. Bouncy noodles, flavorful broth, and good portion. My brother also ordered extra noodles and wow it definitely doubled his portion! They use mainly all disposable utensils even for indoor dining besides our noodle bowls that came in an actual bowl. Service was sweet and simple, where you order up at the counter first. This place definitely feels homey with its small shop vibes (four tables that seat 4 each) and the flavors were nice and clean! A nice addition to this neighborhood. It was not perfect, but for Asian food in this neighborhood, I think this may be one of the best I've tried. Will definitely be back if I am thinking about dinner in this area.

Lanzhou beef noodles. Pretty good

If I could give half stars, I would give this place 2.5 stars. Bad start because I placed order by phone and was told it would be 25 minutes. Turned out to be almost an hour. It was a Friday night but then they should take that into account when giving wait time. We got crab soup dumplings, zha Jiang noodles, braised beef with noodles and the Lanzhou beef noodles. Soup dumplings were pretty good although cold and they had burst by time we got home, but you can tell flavors are good if you get them to dine in. Lanzhou beef noodles were pretty good with a decent kick. The other two dishes were sub-par. Not enough sauce for zha jiang and as others complained the braised beef noodles just had soup, noodles and a couple of pieces of radishes; no beef chunks or bok choy (see picture). Reminded me of old Wendy's commercial, "Where's the beef??" Not coming back.

R2. Spicy Cumin Lamb Burger

Delicious and authentic Chinese food- highly recommend the spicy cumin lamb burger, one of our favorite items on the menu- had to go back the next day to get more. The meat is tender and aromatic with hints of cumin. There are bits and pieces of red/green pepper in it, which soaked up all the flavor. Perfect amount of sauce and the bun was not soggy at all. Today we also got the double cooked pork belly and the spicy oil spill noodles. The pork belly was crispy and a bit salty for me but my boyfriend said it was perfectly fine. The spicy oil spill noodles weren't hot noodles as we expected, but nonetheless, it was delicious. Flavor was garlicky with a bit of heat from the oil. The oil and sauce were on the bottom of the container so we shook it up before enjoying it.

Does that look like a LOT of OIL? Yes. Welcome to the Gulf of BP, brought to you without the tedium of flavor by Mr Don Huang!

The name of this place is NOT DunHuang, but rather Dun Huang. Ha. I get it but no. The food and service do not deserve such a pun. Where to start... The service: how am I annoying you? Literally called in my order. Just came in to pick it up and yet I get attitude? Am I bothering you? Unacceptable. Your bad day is not my fault and sure as sugar should not be my bloody problem. The food: The Bok Choy: bland. Well cooked with a little crunch but how did you forget the Um... what do you call it? FLAVOR! The "Chinese burger": I don't like arepas. I love Colombian food but those bland bread hockey pucks do nothing for me. So, a completely bland bread disc, sliced and filled with tasty meat. So what's my problem? The oil they used to make it spicy: just poured on. The poor bread was like a drowned squirrel. So, to recap, tasty beef fragments, awash in a sea of flavorless spicy oil which made the bread soggy. In a word, yuck. In two words, yuck yuck. The Lo Mein, their SELF-PROCLAIMED SPECIALTY, hand rolled noodles, was just meh. How? Well, starch is not a flavor so we can just leave it at that. Your specialty is meh. Last and also least, the wonton in chili soup, a thick layer of oil over tasty LOOKING tan soup which was not tasty. However, the oil was every bit as oily as I expected so I've got that going for me. The wontons were also bland and the skin was like a wet dress. It was like eating La Llorona (eating supernatural Mexican women, not what I was shooting for in a SOUP!) Nope. Never going back.

Receipt

The flavors are good however I would skip would skip the Braised beef noodles just based on how skimpy the meat portion is Including the cilantro the overall portion was less than 2 ozs. The actual noodles was nice and bouncy and had a flavorful broth. I would suggest the signature beef noodle soup instead, this was the standout in the order, flavorful broth and chunks of tender beef. The soup dumplings leaked out most of the soup and the lamb burger was ok. I would only go back to get the signature noodles nothing else.
