I'm not from Mongolia and don't have much experience with authentic Mongolian food, but my GOD this was some of the best food I have had in the Bay area! The only hint you have that this unassuming small strip mall restaurant is anything special is that it has easily 3-4x the number of people inside compared to the next door (larger) restaurants. That, and the 5/5 Google reviews that seem unexaggerated, not-bots and don't say anything about service. We got the momos in milk tea and the TSUIVAN expecting nothing and they were soooo good. The momo dough and the tsuivan fried noodles were clearly made in house. The meat filling of the momo perfectly complimented the milky broth it came in. The Tsuivan was topped with some stir fried vegetables and gherkins which I found to be a little salty, but still delicious in context. We enjoyed it so much I considered getting extra dumplings to go. They have a frozen dumplings cooler, so we grabbed some Steamed Pork Buuz (more steamed bun than dumplings, about the size of a large fist) that I can NOT wait to try. COVID ERA NOTE: if you are more concerned about Covid19 exposure, I recommend enjoying this place via takeout. It is indoor dining only in a small space. read more

Our first time at the Dumpling House and we were not disappointed. We ordered a lot of food for two people, but we love yummy leftovers. Obviously we ordered dumplings. What else does one order at a restaurant named Dumpling House? We got the chicken momo and the beef khuushuur. The momo had an impressive 10 standard size dumplings and were tasty though a bit underwhelming. The beef khuushuur were bigger, fried, and very juicy or the inside. There were 5 to the order, absolutely delicious, and came with a refreshing coleslaw and an extremely hot salsa (my husband loves spicy and this was too much for him, you've been warned!) For entrees we got tsuvian which was called a beef stew with handmade noodles. There wasn't any liquid, it was more like a beef and vegetable stir fry with handmade noodles. It was great. The flavor of each vegetable came through and the noodles give it a nice texture contrast. It is also great warmed up the next day. Highly recommend! We also got the chicken teriyaki. I have a weakness for teriyaki, having lived in Seattle, the land of plentiful and delicious teriyaki. I'm always looking for a good teriyaki. This version we different than any other I've had, but very good! The chicken was juicy dark meat, mildly marinated. The sauce was allowed to cook down at the end to make some charred crispy edges on the chicken. Normally I like a saucy teriyaki, but I didn't miss it here at all. This dish was snarfed up and no leftovers made it home. Yum! The ambiance was a small cozy dining area with a bit of 1970s lounge. Bottom line: tasty food, huge portions, a menu full of unusual and familiar dishes, friendly and quick service. We need to explore more of the menu. What is Mongolian bersh (looked like a form of borscht)? Plov? Inquiring minds want to know. read more

The vegetable momos are the best I have had, with such a flavourful filling. I wanted to give a 3.5 stars but round up to 4. It was pretty quiet the day I dropped by for lunch and practically had to stand around for a few minutes before a staff who was in the back realized we were standing there and waiting for her to direct us which table we should be seated at. A bit disappointed that she didn't have her mask on when she finally did come around. There was no greeting except look, point and put the menu down on the table. She then disappears for a good 10- 15mins. After reviewing the menu, we pretty much went with what the other Yelp reviews raved about. we decided on the chicken momo, fried meat pie and the the noodle dish. The chicken momo were good, but the other 2 dishes were ok. It's a bit on the oily side. I expected that for the fried meat pie but not for the noodles. Overall, try it out if you haven't. read more

Note that if you come here, there appears to be the one wonderful woman acting as cook, hostess, and waitress, so expect the service to be slow and minimal. This is a long overdue review of our favorite restaurant to introduce to our out of town friends/family when they visit. It is such a unique cuisine that not many people are aware of or think to try until we show them the way. Plus we get to order new dishes that aren't in our normal rotation. Regardless of what you order, you won't be disappointed. This is a family owned restaurant and the gal who is the host/waitress is always the one to greet us no matter when we come in and she is great at explaining the menu along with making recommendations. The restaurant itself is off of San Pablo Ave in a small strip of restaurants and businesses with a limited parking lot along with street parking. Many restaurant-goers might overlook this restaurant as they might be headed to Dumpling House's neighbor for a familiar bite to eat. Seat yourself or call ahead for larger groups since most seat 4-6 patrons and limited although not always completely packed. Most are folks who are waiting for a to-go order. Once you place your order with the waitress/host, try out their traditional hot milk tea which is non-caffeinated. It has a bit of savory, kind of salty flavor to it that I've become accustomed to but they have sugar packets for those who want a sweeter tea. Typically we order their lamb dumplings as not many restaurants offer this. It is not gamey in aroma and the kids gobble them down whether it's the small bansh or the larger momo sized. We haven't done this yet but they have a freezer with dumplings which I've seen others come by to purchase. Another kid favorite is their beef khuushuur which are handheld deep fried meat pockets although you don't want to hold them when they first arrive at your table since they come out piping hot. Cut them in half to let the hot steam out or use a fork/chopsticks to pick them up. If it's a cool or windy day, we order their huitsaa soup which has beef meatballs and veggies in a savory beef broth. The dumplings in beef soup is also a delicious option. If you want more Russian leaning dishes, their gulyash and borsh soup are the way to go. Other recommended dishes are spicy for my spouse and I. We usually get the spicy pork entree. We've discovered other dishes that our visitors request such as the shapta which is a spicy beef dish. And new on the wall menu following a recent renovation is their pork belly ramen which is our new favorite if we are craving a noodle dish here. We thought there was a broth in it when we ordered it, but didn't get to it until a few minutes afterwards since there was so much food on the table; however I think it's a broth less ramen with spicy pork belly and topped with a fried egg. Definitely spicy and that complimentary hot milk tea works great to offset any surprised "too spicy in you mouth feeling." So if you're feeling adventurous, make a stop here! read more

I am shocked how delicious this food is. I don't know what I expected but the flavors are the very essence of savory. For takeout I got tsuvian, lamb dumplings, and borscht. The dumplings are wet with broth or juice inside like soup dumplings. The borscht is with cabbage, no beets, and it is one of the warmest wintery flavors imaginable. My boyfriend and I had to pause the show we'd put on for dinner so that we could talk about the amazing soup while we ate it. We couldn't keep water about it. The tsuvian was a bit dry to be honest but not bad. I might not order that one again but I want to eat every kind of stewed meat and soup they offer. Takeout service was slow but worth the wait! I don't mind waiting for food this good. Only one woman was working the front of house and her English is EXTREMELY limited so please have patience with her. She was very sweet. Phoned in my order then went to pick it up shortly after. I got beef dumplings which also came with a tiny bit of coleslaw. The dumplings were absolutely delicious and filling. The price was fair since the 10 pieces was quite a lot especially with all that protein. Loved the broth/sauce that spilled out of each dumpling. Will definitely order from here again! Had a craving for Mongolian food for a while and had to drive an hour to get to Dumpling House, but it was definitely worth the drive because this is one of the best places to get Mongolian food in the bay. We got the special combo that comes with chicken soup and khuushuur as well as tsuivan. Khuushuur is flat fried dumpling with seasoned ground beef inside. It is one my favorite traditional food. Tsuivan is stir fried noodles with meat and veggies. Need to mix it well so the noodles absorb all the meat flavor. read more

This place is incredible. The dilapidated nature of the place just adds to the appeal for me. This is the kind of place where an ever drafty door that refuses to close, a mean spirited almost bratty daughter turned reluctant waitress, decor that consists of floor panels on the floor and all over the walls, and a dream catcher featuring an animal that very much looks like it was in the middle of being killed is so perfect.
