A humble mom-and-pop Chinese restaurant -- nothing fancy, just that basic hometown spot when you're craving comfort food. We stopped by because we wanted to try some place new that had comfort soup to soothe a lingering cough. Ordered the wor wonton for my husband and the sizzling rice soup for me. And no, we didn't share -- we each ate straight from the serving bowls. The soups were simple but flavorful. We also tried the mushu pork, which was tasty and nicely seasoned. Service was good -- water was refilled promptly, tea stayed hot, food came out quickly, and the waitress (who I think was also the owner) checked in on us. Would we go back? Maybe. It's a solid, no-frills spot, but not quite memorable enough to drive 25 minutes out for. Still, if you're nearby and want a comforting meal, it's worth a stop. read more

I heard China Kitchen was good, but I never had the chance to eat there and wouldn't want to eat there after I was greeted in a unfriendly, rude manner with an unpleasant, unexpected attitude. I called them 5 times (no answer, no answer, then they answered and hung up, then it was busy TWICE...meaning they took the phone off the hook), so I thought, they were super busy with lunch orders, so I decided to go there. My daughter and I got there at 2:40 pm and only one customer was there eating, while two employees were at the table making potstickers. They didn't look at us for almost 2 minutes. One lady asked "here, take home". I said, "take home". Another, 2 minutes went by, and the other lady finally got up went to wash her hands, came to the cash register and said, "what you want"! My daughter said, "hi" ...no response. She said, "hi" again, and the lady said, "yeah, you order". My daughter said it again and the same response. If she couldn't greet us in a respectful manner then you can't have my money. Plus, we didn't want any bad juju in the food. IF THE FRONT CUSTOMER GREETERS ARE NASTY, THE KITCHEN CHEFS MUST BE NASTY TOO! We went to Uncle Wongs in El Cerrito instead, and gladly enjoyed the food and great customer service. read more

Located in a small outdoor strip mall with ample parking. Signage on door states "to go orders only." Phone orders accepted. We ordered the House Dinner for two which included Appetizers: 2 Fried Prawns, 2 Egg Rolls, and 2 Foil Wrapped Chicken pieces; Soup: Sizzling Rice Soup; and 2 Entrées: Prawns with Mixed Vegetables and Mandarin Beef. Steamed Rice was also included for $41. Of the appetizers the prawns were good but were smaller than the circumference of a finger. I didn't like the oily, fishy taste of the egg rolls or the consistency of the paper wrapped chicken however the flavor was good. Haven't tried the soup yet. The entrees were both delicious!! The Mongolian beef was super tender and although it could have used a few less onions I loved it! The prawns were fresh, plump, the vegetables were fresh and cooked perfectly! The variety of veggies was also nice. A little more sauce would have made it perfect but overall another great dish! My family always go to China Kitchen whenever we are in El Sobrante. This restaurant serves very delicious food and at a very reasonable price and service. They are closed 3:30pm - 4:30pm. we tried calling many time with no reply. The food is fine if all you're familiar with or like is american chinese food. we come here for the convenience of location. In the mood for Chinese food, I hopped on good ol' Yelp and after reading the reviews, I figured why not give this spot a try. I must've pass this place up a million times and never thought to stop in. I'm glad I did tonight! My order was ready in about 25 minutes like the lady said. It's only to-go orders. Their dining area is closed. The cook, I'm assuming, was bringing orders that were ready to the takeout table, but didn't acknowledge the customers standing around. It felt weird just standing there with no bell to ding, or anything in that nature. After about 5-10 minutes of waiting, another lady comes out and asked me for my phone number. Finally got my food, paid, and left. Hands down, the best Chinese food in the area! They know what they're doing in that kitchen. The honey walnut prawns and salt & pepper fish were perfectly crisp and delicious. The chow mien wasn't greasy at all, but still had flavor. The vegetable fried rice was yummy too! Horrible Customer Service from the lady behind the counter. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here that noticed the lady is super rude. I really like the food here and I have been coming for years but yesterday was horrible. Right when we came in, I knew she was in a bad mood. Not happy at all to see us. I have no idea why. We were served our food, and the last item of Chow Mein was missing. We were basically done with all our food and were stuffed. I told her we didn't want to the chow mein anymore, we were all done at this time. She literally yells "You ordered the Chow Mein" and storms off. Comes back and slams it on the table. As a waitress, it gets difficult and a simple "It's on the way" would have been more professional. I will not be coming back again. Ruined my experience. read more

My babygirl had been craving Chinese and so she asked if we could get some on her bday, which was a Friday. I called the restaurant to place our order and then made my way down to pick it up. I had remembered this place being very good years ago so I was hoping for the same luck, although I wasn't expecting it. When I arrived, my order was ready. I paid and went on my way. It smelled delicious on the way home!! Yum! Everything was AMAZING!! Omg so good. The chow mein wasn't dry but it wasn't oily either. My daughter loved the chicken fried rice, I thought it was good too. The honey walnut prawns were sweet and crunchy. The fried filled wontons were too done, so they were hard and the meat was dry. I have been coming here for over 5 years, mostly ordering out. In that time i have had two lovely daughters and we try to come here for a "fancy" restaurant experience to work on our ediquete. That being said, today when we came in the two ladies that work front of house looked up didn't smile or help suggest a table, they looked disappointed to see us, we have been coming here once a week for the last few months and always leave that table as neat and stacked up as possible......The customer service here is the worst I have ever experienced, I love to eat out and Chinese food is my favorite but I will not be bringing myself back here again. I like the food for the most part but the servers are neglectful and rude, they don't ask how things are and they don't even ever smile....I could go on and on. But also today the server walked away from me while a was asking a question, and then when our soup and one entree came out they came out simultaneously and she just plopped them both down not offering to serve us our first bowl of soup, which is usually what happens at most other chinese restaurants. The noodles tasted moldy and they were all short and broken. Too bad this place is ungrateful for their regular patrons, they lost a good one today. read more

It seems as if every time I go to this establishment they have an attitude when you have a customer that walks in your door you greet them you don't act like that. They're not at the counter and continue your conversation and then say oh what did you order? This is not the first time The first time it happened. I said I am not gonna spend my money with them anymore, but I was sick and I needed some soup so I went over there and what do you know? Learned two things today. 1) Never judge a book by its cover! 2) Always trust Yelp reviews. This place looks like a hole in the wall and the seedy characters outside don't help. But the Yelp reviews were pretty good so I tried it out. LOVED the Kung Pao Shrimp. Rich with seasoning and flavor, good portions and even a little bit of KICK to it. Sweet & Sour Pork was tasty. I love their salt and pepper chicken wings to go. I order them extra crispy and they are consistently crispy and well seasoned. I'm not a fan of Chinese food but their wings are excellent. The wings come served over a bed of shredded cabbage, sliced jalapeños and chopped scallions. The best part is they cut two holes in the top of the to-go container so my wings are still crispy by the time I get home. Nice touch and I appreciate that. read more

Love this spot, it's my go to for local Chinese food. The Chicken Corn Soup is delicious. Be sure to add a bit of soy sauce and chili oil into it, so it really brings the soup together. The Fried Prawns from the appetizers are wrapped in eggroll wrapper and fried. Really delicious. If you want a good vegetable dish, get the Salt & Pepper Green Beans, you can't go wrong with that dish. The eggplant for me though is just so-so, don't really recommend that one. Ordered my family to go dinner from here on a weekday night, we had about a 20 minute wait which wasn't bad considering she was pretty busy. We got home and plated everything, the chow fun was a little on the dry side, some noodles not being fully cooked, the pork buns were sweeter than normal, the hot and sour soup definitely tasted sour, the lamb was overly salted the only good part was the rice which you can't really mess up....
