I'm so disappointed about this place .i've been once and I never come back.firstly,I ordered some of spicy dish but that's too sweet ,i felt disgusting.Secondly most of staff and manger so nice, except one of staff, she seem like us owe her million dollars, she never smile.Actually I gave them 20%tip.So I give one star . read more

Food is decent but service and staff attitude is really bad. The maitre d' was aggressive and rude. She seated us toward the back next to the fish tank and when we pointed to a different table of equal capacity in a better part of the restaurant and asked to be seated there, she flew into a rage and insisted that we sit at the table she had assigned us. Eventually, she gave in but slammed the menus down on our table and walked off in a huff. I won't be going back here for a while. read more

SO my 5 star rating here is held to a different standard than say a fancy spot like Craigie. But when you compare this spot to similar casual Chinese restaurants, there is NO comparison. Dumpling House has the combination of breadth and quality that I have really never seen. When you go to other dim sum type places, a huge menu is usually offset with diluted quality. Not the case here. Very happy to be living a short walk away from this great Central Square eatery! read more

Xlb had proper structure (be careful, you may squirt soup at other folks once you bite into the dumpling) , but flavor is aight. Scallion pancake also was in bland side and flour used is not as QQ. read more

You guys, this place is fire. Don't get me wrong, the inside isn't anything nice to look at, and the experience is not luxurious,, and you'll probably have to wait a long time, but my god the food is tasty. I could eat their soup dumplings for every meal. And the beef wrapped scallion pancakes cured my depression TBH. Full disclosure, this place is a 3 minute walk from my house so I might be biased, but its just so good, ok? read more

Great soup dumplings. I thought the pork bun was too bready. Crab rangoons were well fried. Went with a friend and shared a mix of menu items. Would definitely go back. Probably to satisfy my new craving for soup dumplings. read more

Dumpling house is a Szechuan restaurant. They serve general Chinese dishes along with the more speciality dishes as well. The 2 dominant tastes for Szechuan dish are oily and spicy, so you might not find it delicious as expected. Overall, the taste of food here are moderately considered as authentic. read more

Don't order the mini pork soup dumplings! The pork has lots of chewy pieces of fat and cartilage, and the dumplings don't have much flavor. Very disappointing. That said, I'd recommend ordering soup and other dishes that are not pork dumplings - some of them are quite delicious. read more

The service was very quirky. The waiter seemed to be somewhere else and I had to repeat my order and ask for confirmation to be sure he got it. The menu looked authentic but was limited in odd ways, e.g. very few chicken dishes. I got a "fish" dish -- no indication what type -- that was ok but nothing special. I won't be back. read more

Overall I loved the food!! the buns and dumplings were amazing. When I went it was packed but the wait didn't last long. The only thing I didn't like was the pan fried noodles, they were very soggy and the edges were too dry. overall the potions were good and the staff is friendly. read more

Well, we went back, mostly because an email from the manager wanted us to. We told our previous story to the very helpful but english-impossible waitress, and she offered to comp our second attempt at the soup dumplings. That was nice, right? Don't speak too soon, because our soup dumplings never showed up. (I suppose that's a good way to comp something, huh?) After this was pointed out, she discounted our total by 5%. Wow. And once again, neither of us were impressed with much, although we've had some success with the appetizers. Overall, there appears to be a reliance upon the fish paste/sauce with all of its inherent saltiness and sharp taste, and that made most everything taste the same. We won't be going back, sorry. read more

tried a few times after it opened , last time now about ~1 year ago got violently sick from some oil beef concoction. Have never eaten there again. We loved Chinese food and ate at Zoe's all the time (they had a structural issue - but have reopen since). It was during that time they were closed that we tried Dumpling - and went through this experience. We have not been able to eat chinese food since being ill from eating at Dumpling house. The smell within a 2-3 block radius is insane from this restaurant. On certain days and times, the oil smell is truly disgusting - and as a resident of the area, it is amazing how stinky this restaurant gets and it blows completely up or down Mass Ave as the wind blows. I was down on Surrey St coming back from a run around the river the other day, and it was down there (look it up on maps). Completely depends on which way the wind blows and takes the staunch odor. Please address the filtering/exhaust system from the kitchen - not to mention, hope others have not got completely sick from food poisoning at this place. read more

Delicious chicken dumplings and dipping sauce, average 45-60 calories per dumpling. 10 dumplings to an order. Our waitress could have been a little bit more chipper, but hey, we all have our days. They serve a nice green tea with every meal. Sapporo beer is clutch as always, great place to pop into after checking out the Cambridge Antiques. read more

TL;DR: Fine food, awful service. Be prepared, they aim to dehydrate~ -- How to have a 1-star Dumpling House experience: 1) Go during lunch. It'll be busy. Perfect. 2) Order water for the group multiple times. You'll get it on the third time if you try hard enough. Make sure you've inhaled enough MSG via their food to properly look like you're dying for some liquid nourishment. 3) Arrive a bit later than your friends and order after them. Dumpling House knows of your transgressions and will make you repent for your tardiness. You shall be served your meal when, and only when, everyone else has consumed theirs. 4) Find the courage to ask for yours to go. Be presented with a baleful look. Feel their very essence screaming "Haven't you already done enough?!!" The 1 star is to account for the fact that I did actually get my soup dumplings in the end. //Edit: The 2nd star is because it tasted pretty okay. read more

Great soup dumplings and Scallion pancake filled with beef!

My aunt, fiance, and I like to 'travel the world' in Boston by eating different ethnic cuisines once a week. My aunt is a full blown Caucasian American that somehow learned to speak Chinese fluently. For the last 30 or so years, she's been to China once a year for business purposes. Needless to say, she knows her Chinese food. Since we've started this 'journey of food' and traveled (via MBTA, Uber, Taxi... no plane) to 50 or so countries over the past 5 years , we decided to finally give Chinese food a shot. For starters, the people that work at this place are fantastic. Better yet, the food is DANK. So good, so fresh, so tasty! The levels of flavor are out of control... each bite is better than the last. I'm in a total food coma right now, and this is 8 hours after eating. It's not that the food was thick, unhealthy, and salty - rather, I just ate enough to feed a small army. Scallion pancakes..... probably ate 3 to many of those. The eggplant dish was AWESOME... that's some high praise coming from me since I'm not much of a veggie guy. My aunt is the vegetarian, kinda, so we typically stay away from beef and instead go with the healthier stuff. Dumplings were fluffy and fresh. They were like walking on clouds, but for eating dumplings... if that makes sense. Mango Chicken - WOOF! Never had a mango before, it's now my favorite fruit. Pan fried dumplings were so moist and fresh and clearly (hopefully) made in house! I wanted to write this review simply because I'm hungry and wanted to remind myself of how much I liked the Dumpling House. Unfortunately, it only made me remember the boring salad I have locked up in the corporate job's fridge. Till next time, Dumpling House. read more

Fast, simple Chinese food classics - I would give 3,5 stars if I could. The service isn't great, but the food is not bad and portions are cheap and plentiful. read more

This place is pretty much family-styled We ordered general gaus tofu, soup dumplings, and some spicy beef soup. -General gaus tofu wasn't worth it, to be honest. It was very hard to chew and it felt more of a struggle trying to eat it than enjoy it. The sauce however was great! -Soup dumplings, as expected, were yummy and hot. They may not look perfect, but they still taste yummy. -Spicy beef soup was very heavy?? The broth felt sorta oily and not an ounce of spiciness. Service?? There were a lot of staff members that night but they were all in groups. Didn't experience bad service, but don't expect waiters to always be attentive. Just grab their attention if you need something. read more

Great food. Sautueed rice cakes with veggies are my absolute favorite.

Although Dumpling House has a fairly authentic menu, the quality is just OK. I'd go back only not to cross the river.

Best place for Chinese around Harvard Square. Yelp doesn't let me do Chinese characters unfortunately. Boo Recommend: - xiao long bao -- delicious, a tad salty - kong xin cai - chao dou ya Not Recommend: - Hot and sour soup -- wayyyy too much pepper - suan cai huang yu -- not the typical soup/fish/pickled cabbage combo that one expects, instead is an actual fish, eyes included read more

I'm not sure what's up with all the bad reviews - we tried this place just now for the first time by getting takeout, and it was VERY good! Maybe because of Covid the owners are doing the cooking, since it was the best Chinese-American food I've had in a WHILE. Not greasy, incredibly tasty, just the right level of spice. The hot and sour soup is particularly great, as are the sheet noodles. Will be ordering again for sure! read more

We live essentially across the street from Dumpling House, but were initially scared away by dinnertime crowds. Two friends and I went for dinner a couple days ago. I'm mostly vegetarian, so I ordered the tofu with scallions + veggies - which was delicious. Big portions, very flavorful. However, it didn't come with rice - we had to order white rice separately. The reason I'm giving only 3 stars was for everything else we ordered. The service was pretty poor - they basically seemed to be doing a drive-by every time they communicated with us or dropped off food. Literally, they never actually stopped and paused, just kept moving - which made it really hard to yell "can we get three waters...." once they're already running away. They also brought out our food in strange time intervals - the tofu like 7 mins before anything else. The other food that we ordered was good but not life-changing. The vegetable fried rice was good but way too salty. The original dumplings, fried, were fine but nothing special - I would've been just as happy with my Costco frozen dumplings :). And apparently the chicken that my friends ordered was also nothing to write home about. We'll probably continue our quest to find the best Chinese place in the area, though if I'm craving some yummy tofu I'll probably get a solo take-out order to avoid their service. read more

Very good Chinese food for a very good price. I had the Shandon dumplings along with a bowl of beef noodle soup. Both were excellent and highly recommended. read more

I thought maybe I was a little sensitive for feeling discriminated by their staff, but another reviewer commented the same thing so I know I am not alone. I called to order lunch takeout today. A woman at the front desk answered the phone. She spoke English with an accent, so I knew she was Chinese and decided to speak Mandarin Chinese with her. She sounded cold, took my order, and asked for my last time. There was a few seconds of silence after I told her my last name. She must be writing down the order, that's fine, so I waited, but then all the sudden, she just hung up on me!! Without saying a word!! WTH??? Maybe she was super busy??? But still, you should have the basic telephone manner no matter what, especially when you are providing customer service. 10 minutes later I went to pick up my order and saw this woman. She was in her 30's or 40's, long dark hair. I wasn't sure whether she was the manager or just a receptionist. I looked around and there were less than 10 customers in the entire restaurant (it was past lunch time). So she wasn't even that busy! WTH again? I bet she was rude and hung up on me because I spoke Chinese and I have a Chinese last name. Wow.... There are a few new Chinese restaurants in the area and near Central Sq. This place isn't getting my business anymore. read more

It's aight. Busy in a good way; a place to go with friends, but probably not a date or out-of-town visitor. I went there with my cousin to get Shanghainese cuisine and probably had too high expectations from his descriptions of the place; the dumplings were underwhelming, but the other entrees were solid. read more

Unfortunately, their food is more expensive on Christmas without warning! They displayed no signs that their usual menu for lunch is not available on Christmas eve, hoaxing me into the restaurant. Sure way to lose a regular customer who would routinely bring in large parties! Again, I have no issues with business charging more on holidays, but charging more without informing the customers first is not ethical business practices. read more

My FAVORITE Chinese place in all of MA. The menu is HUGE and you'll never run out of things to try. If you are a fan of scallion pancakes, they are on another level here. There's also a wide selection of dumplings, which you can choose fried or steamed. All in all its a great place and I definitely recommend if you are craving better than average Chinese food. read more

Great place to catch up with friends. They were able to accommodate 14 of us at their big table (brilliant serving suggestion from there: lazy Susan in the middle!) Some of the highlights were the scallion pancakes, soup dumplings and then the Szechuan fish soup - first time trying that and it was awesome. Spicy and great to share. read more

I love Dumpling House. For a long time I lived in a city without any Taiwanese food options, so now that I live in Boston, I love coming here. Eating the dishes brings me right back to visiting my relatives in Taiwan and eating my aunt's cooking. The soup dumplings are great as well. The menu can be overwhelming, so here is what I recommend: Kong xin Cai/"water spinach"/onchoy (not sure what it's called in English), salt and pepper fried chicken (jiao Yan ji), spicy wonton soup (Hong you cao shao), beef wrapped scallion pancake (niu rou juan bing), and soup dumplings of course! Delicious food. Delicious leftovers. So happy when I have food from here. read more

Disclaimer: I have never actually eaten at this place. However, I did accidentally order from them the other day. I was at work trying to get takeout from within a 2 block radius, so I could sneak out, grab my food, and run back to work. I happen to work next to a place called Dumpling ROOM and confused it for Dumpling HOUSE, which is about a 15min walk away. I wrote it off as a loss of $9 and was bummed, thinking at least maybe an employee could eat it for free at the end of the day. The next day I woke up to find that they refunded the charge when I never came to pick it up. Classy move read more

The best authentic Chinese food in Cambridge. They serve dishes I usually can only get when in Shanghai. Great for northern/Szechuan Chinese food. Definitely worth the wait and the hassle. Ordering out is less stressful than trying to eat in, although they do have a decent sized space. The tell-tale sign for this sort of restaurant is its clientel and consistent capacity. It's always busy and this is apparently where all the expats from china come for "real" food. This place and Flame are the best in Cambridge. Make them your staple. From someone who is in china frequently, this is as good as it gets for being state side. read more

Finally! Some great Chinese food near Harvard Square! Dumpling House is an EXCELLENT Taiwanese-style Chinese restaurant just a few minutes walk from the Harvard University campus. I've been their three times already, and everything I've ordered has been good to great. As the name "Dumpling House" implies, their Taiwanese-style dumplings are particularly excellent. I also found their green beans to be the best I've had in the Boston area. Overall the menu is varied and interesting with many authentic Taiwanese dishes and very few boring "American Chinese" standards. All in all, this is a great new addition to the strong array of Taiwanese options around Boston. It's probably not quite as good as Taiwan Cafe in Chinatown or Jo Jo Taipei in Allston, but it's better than Mulan in East Cambridge. So nice to have a good Chinese option near Harvard after decades of nothing but the horror that is Yenching and Hong Kong. read more

The food was great, but the service wasn't so good. We needed to ask for water several times and they kept forgetting. Our waitress never came back to check on us. The owner of the place is really friendly though. The food came very quickly, which is good, but the waitress didn't want to wait for a second for us to move around the dishes on the table, and she just left dishes on my hand... I'll probably choose to take out next time because I didn't like the service. The food we ordered was all great- stinky tofu, pig's feet, oyster pancake, and soup dumpling with pork and crab. read more

I went there because their lobster sounds famous, but it turned out that the sauce was too salty. I also ordered Xiaolong bao, but no soup inside, which was very disappointing. The sizzling beef rib was not 'sizzling' or 'hot' as well. read more

I came here as part of a mission to try all the soup dumplings in Boston (needless to say I eat a lot of Asian food). The restaurant on a whole was not unlike any other Chinese restaurant: traditional decorations, busy at prime times, but quick to be served with great food. I sat at a communal table (I think there's only one in the whole restaurant) and everyone's food smelled great & seemed to be cooked really well. The place also seemed nice & clean. For all you soup dumpling fans, I'd say give this place a try. The broth is a lot less salty and thick than a lot of other places I've tried, which was a nice change of pace. The pork inside was cooked well & the dumpling itself was nice & light. PS they also serve a pot of tea with every meal which is a huge plus for an Asian restaurant for me. read more
