I came here with my cousin at 11pm bc we were hungry for our second dinner. Surprisingly it was packed! We ended up ordering hot and sour soup and salt and pepper squid. The portion size was great and These are the most simple "Chinese" dishes but somehow they both tasted very off. The squid was not salted to our liking and it wasn't crispy as it should have been. The squid came with a bowl of rice. So 1 additional star for that. But the soup was way too vinegary. Both dishes cost as 24 dollars including tip. Prob won't be returning. I always have a lovely hate relationship with Chinatown spots. The plus side - the food is delish and fast. The bad side - don't ever expect friendly service, and your tables will probably be sticky. But I guess that's how you know the food will be good lol. I prefer this place for soup dumplings compared to the other more popular one in Chinatown because it's always less packed and there's more space inside. I usually always get the same, the braised beef noodle soup with spinach and either the pork or pork + crab Xiao long bao (this trip I got the latter). The noodle soup comes out pretty fast, and is very delicious. Plenty amount of soft, tender braised beef and noodles. The dark broth also contains pickled mustard greens, and reminds me of tonkatsu udon broth. The XLB take a little longer to come out as they are steamed on demand, maybe around 15 minutes. Orders come in 6 here, and are quite large with a chewy thick wrapping. Also comes with a vinegar sipping sauce, although they really skimmed out on the ginger slices. Is this "fine dining"? Absolutely not. The building is a bit rundown and dated. We visited twice on our recent visit to Boston and both times we were there after midnight. I mean how many options do you have for "fine dining" Chinese food after midnight? The staff was busy running because they were busy with people dining in and people ordering take out. It was clear the staff was busting their butts and we were tolerant of this when evaluating the service. The food was solid and I'll again state there aren't all that many options for dumplings after midnight. We ordered beef teriyaki and crab rangoons to start. Teriyaki portion was small and rangoons could have used a minute less in the fryer and were flat, not fluffy or puffed like they should be. Came here for the noodle soup with shredded beef and long horn peppers. The noodles were the perfect consistency, chewy and bouncy. I liked the long horn peppers a lot. The broth was a very nice spicy level, and the flavor was nice but it did taste a little watered down. The beef was all right but nothing special and probably not the best beef I have had in a noodle soup. Just FYI the left overs are not good bc the noodles get super soggy and start to disintegrate. Over all, it was a decent dish but i would like to try something new next time. I also ordered the taiwanese pan fried dumplings. These were good! This place is a huge rip off. 15 dollars for edamame? 16 for scallion pancakes? It is literally at least 500% mark up. For what? Greasy, low quality food made with cheap ingredients? Absolutely not. If the food was actually good, yes, it might be worth it. but this restaurant has managed to turn conventionally cheap Americanized Chinese food into an unreasonable expense. Second time coming here but my first time was much better. Since gourmet dumpling house closed and it was always busy, we came here the first time and it was good. This time, on thanksgiving day so maybe it was extra busy because Chinatown was so busy. The items are also not cheap at all. Ordered fried pork dumpling, an order of xiao long bao, and an order of Singapore mei fun and it was all over $40. To me, I think that's a bit high. The pan fried dumpling was barely fried at the bottom and I think under done. The pork was still pretty red and the sauce provided for the fried dumpling was very sweet and sesame taste. As far as the xiao long bao, not great. The wrapper was SO thick - as thick as normal dumpling or even more tbh. Lots of soup and the flavor wasn't too bad. Lastly, the Singapore mei fun. Super dry, too much curry powder so it was super powdery eating it. Couldn't taste anything else like oyster sauce, etc. Protein was shrimp and pork One thing to note.. the cleanliness is questionable. As there are a couple restaurants known for soup dumplings in the Chinatown area, Dumpling Cafe has the shortest line as it is a hidden gem. The restaurant is slightly larger than any other restaurant in the area. I really enjoy their pork chops with peking sauce, peas pod stems with garlic, sauteed string beans, mini juicy buns with pork and roast beef with scallion pancake. Though, I would not recommend ordering take out at Dumpling Cafe because they do not double check their orders. During two separate occasions, they've packed an incorrect dish and/or forgot a dish. I understand English might not be their first language (it's not mine either) but treating your customers right and with manners, is universal. First they sat us, then while I was still deciding what to drink, waitress walked away, had to get her attention somehow. Then they brought the drinks and threw them at our table. I also asked for some seasoning, and they took their time to bring it. In regards of the food... greasy, no flavor. And when the bill came in, they had added an 18% tip to the total bill. Although because of the bad service and horrible attitude, they didn't deserve any, but I asked why the 18%, when I had selected only X dollars. She of course didn't like it, ran the CC, and took the receipt and threw it in the plate. (With all the greasy crap that was there). If I could give them a 0 rating I would, but I guess I have to select at least 1... and reason I walked in there was because it was the only open place in the area, for sit down. I could only stomach the rice and broccoli but even then it tasted below average. Dumpling cafe is a popular spot for dumplings in Boston! Came here for lunch one day as I was touring Boston. Very busy and packed restaurant for a small cafe restaurant. As we walked in, we were told we couldnt have any strollers inside (even folded up,) so we had to leave it in the front entrance (that's how small the restaurant is) Our waitress took a while to greet us and grabbed our orders, but it did give us time to look at the menu. We ordered: Steamed Pork and Leek Dumpling: a delicious dumpling mixed with Pork and Leek with some type of soup inside. (If you're able to put it all in your mouth in one bite, you'll get that soupy part of the dumpling taste) Sauteed Flat Noodles with Chicken: a wonderful flavored flat noodles (reminded me of drunken noodles) bought this for the kiddos, and the devoured it. Ordered other things off the menu like egg drop soup and general tso, which were also tasty but the usual americanized chinese dishes. Pros: Food came out fast! I really enjoyed every bite of my food, especially the dumplings with the soupy part in them. Cons: Customer Sevice was kinda off, didnt feel like the waitress we had was very attentive to us. Best soup dumpling in Boston and I have tried a handful in Chinatown and outside of Boston. At this restaurant, they are called mini juicy dumpling. They are made to order and tabes approximately 15 minutes to prepare. These dumplings come with a standard black vinegar dipping sauce with ginger. Beware as the soup inside the dumpling is extremely hot. I recommend ordering at least two since they are so good that you may not be able to stop at three dumplings. I can eat a whole order to myself, let alone share. I highly recommend the crab and pork mini juicy dumpling. This is by far my favorite item on their menu. If you are not a seafood person, the pork version is just as good. Another dish I recommend is the roast beef scallion pancakes. This is like a scallion pancake but with meat wrapped in the center. Great for sharing. The oyster pancake was good but I wouldn't order it again. I can't get over the slimy texture. Shredded potatoes was so so as was the salt and pepper squid. I prefer their salt and pepper shrimp over the calamari. Their other Chinese dishes such as the jelly fish, beef chow foon, shredded beef and longhorn peppers, stir fried pea pod stem, beef and crispy noodle, sliced fish in spicy broth are all very solid and good. I found this restaurant listed under dim sum. Does have some dim sum items but not typical dim sum. Food is ordered off the menu. No carts. Also for dumplings, they tend to come in sizes of six or eight in an order. Food tasted good. I ordered juicy pork buns-they are soup dumplings-very good. Duck buns also good. Only real complaint is that they automatically added gratuity to the bill(18%) and the when went to pay the waitress showed me the screen to add even more gratuity-seems like trying to get double tip( options were for 15 ,18 and 20% tip in addition to the gratuity already on bill). I was told this is a mighty contender for the "Best Restaurant in Chinatown" title, and I decided to visit. Food I've tried: (* = my favorite) - ROAST BEEF WITH SCALLION PANCAKE* ($12): I realized this is the superior form of scallion pancake. The scallion pancake hugs a piece of meat. The crunch and carb-iness of the pancake pairs wonderfully with the chewiness and protein of the meat. The sauce itself is ever so slightly sweet, which combines all the flavors well. - STEAMED PORK AND LEEK DUMPLING ($9 - 6 pieces): pretty standard pork xia long bao, if not almost exactly the same as you would find at any other place in China town. - SOUP WITH PORK INTESTINE AND BLOOD PUDDING ($7.50): if you've never tried blood pudding it is definitely an interesting consistency. It is like dense pudding with the irony flavor/texture of liver. I thought that the blood pudding itself was nicely made and prepared. The broth is slightly thick, and it is a balance of saltiness with a touch of sourness. I personally thought that the broth could have done with less saltiness. Presentation wise, it does come with a self extinguishing little flame that keeps the soup hot as you enjoy the meal. - TAIWANESE STYLE RICE CAKE AND VEGGIES WITH PORK ($11): this dish was stir fried veggies and pork with rice cake. I liked the chewiness of the rice cake, and it was not overly cooked. The sauce itself was salty, which limited how much I wanted to eat it. In fairness, I do have a pretty low salt tolerance. Atmosphere: - The waiting game is a bit ... haphazard to say the least. The restaurant gets quite crowded during peak times, and when I visited there was a line. We let the front desk waitress know of our position in the queue. When we returned later, they placed us to the back of the queue again. Thankfully, after explaining that we had come earlier, they did seat us at the appropriate moment. I am not sure if there is an official queuing system, but it was a bit confusing. - Note all of the communication during the meal (and the snafu with the front desk) was done in Chinese. I am not sure how much communication we could have done in English. However, this is not entirely unexpected as many other places in Chinatown also operate in this way. - Given the business of the place, and the fast turn over for the patrons this is definitely not a place for a leisurely chat after dinner. After we had finished eating, the staff subtly encouraged us to pay and leave. Service: - Pretty efficient, and the food came out quick. - We did feel a bit rushed at times. - Unclear how much communication is possible in English. Overall: - I found the flavor profile to be overly salty, more so than I would find at other restaurants in this area. - However, I do thank this restaurant for opening my eyes to how wonderful roast beef scallion pancakes are. After reading Yelp reviews we decided to try out Dumpling cafe! True to the reviews, service was bad and confusing. ONE waitresses doing EVERYTHING!! One guy standing behind the cash register on speaker phone, cancelling his electric service. And one guy just standing and looking at his phone. ‍ The waitress took our order, forgot our hot teas. The food came out SUPER fast and hot. Food was awesome, Spicy pork noodles and wontons. Hit the spot of a cold rainy day. We over tipped the waitress, she was amazing tho over worked.
