One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in China town. Food comes out quick but getting a refill on water took forever. Beef with long horn peppers is very spicy but also tasty. The soup that came with the lunch special was not very good but the dumplings made up for it. read more

This is my favorite soup dumpling restaurant in Boston. Heck, it's better than some wildly craved New York soup dumpling joints. Look at my photo! You'll see that exhilarating pouch of yummy and juicy soup dumpling waiting anxiously for you to suck on until it empties its entire content in your eager mouths. There's a few other options in Chinatown that's quite good but the soup in this one is super addictive. We also had watercress with beef in satay sauce. AWFUL! The service was terrible, just to start. Ask for anything and you get eye rolls. The food did not make up for it either. I tried to be adventurous and get duck tongue which is incredibly disappointing (not that I was expecting much) it was small with barely any meat or seasoning for $10! The duck buns were completely dry on the inside with barely any meat in them and the crab Rangoon's were soggy! If you can't make good crab Rangoon in Chinatown I'm not sure what you're doing there. I've been here a few times, and the last time I came I definitively decided that I'll stick to Gourmet Dumpling House from now on. I've always alternated between here, Taiwan Café, and Gourmet Dumpling House, as well as Dumpling House in Cambridge. Although the space is much tighter, Gourmet Dumpling House is the clear winner for food, especially for dumplings. On my last visit to Dumpling Café, we ordered the steamed vegetarian dumplings, but the filling and the wrapper both don't compare to Gourmet Dumpling House at all. The sautéed dishes are also on the salty side. I probably won't come back again. Tip: You get a 5% discount if you use cash. read more

Mini juicy dumplings are very starchy and extremely fatty, the beef w long horn pepper tastes old and moldy, the sauteed bok choy tastes like just oil alone and takes away the true taste of the vegetable. This is a tourist trap being on the main street, don't waste your money here. I stopped by Dumpling Cafe with my friend and her cousin on a weekday. They originally wanted to go to a restaurant next door but it was closed, so they decided to try this one. It was around 5 PM and people were steadily trickling in after ten minutes of us being seated, so I can imagine it getting really packed around dinnertime. We had Crab Rangoon ($7.25), Beef Chow Fun ($8.25), their Taiwan-Style Pan-Fried Dumplings ($8.25). The Crab Rangoon and Beef Chow Fun were liked at the table, but I thought the dumplings were really strange. The meat filling didn't taste good at all and seemed a bit stale or old. My friend's cousin even thought it was under cooked at first (I don't think it was, though). Some of the dumpling pouches weren't fully closed, either, so the presentation of the dish was a bit shabby. I ended up eating only the dumpling skins and paired 'em with the yummy vinegar-y soy sauce they provided. Service was a bit distant and rigid throughout the whole meal and my friend thought it was off-putting. I don't think I'd revisit because I've had better dumplings elsewhere, but I'm glad I gave this place a try! read more

It was first time for me to try those so i cant compare but i wish they came in beef varieties as I dont eat pork usually and i tried out of curiosity. Before I start, the food here deserves at least 4 stars. It goes without saying that Dumpling cafe is known for their Mini Juicy Buns with pork/crabmeat. I'm not sure why they call them mini because each of them will easily take up more than an entire spoon and will fill your soul and body with warmth. Aside from this classic, I also love to order their Flounder with sweet and sour sauce. The fish is lightly battered and tossed into the sauce along with an assortment of vegetables. This always goes perfectly with a bowl of steamed white rice. However, what is hard to ignore is the service that was given the last time I came here. Normally, I'm completely okay with subpar service when I go to Asian restaurants because growing up, I know that good service and Asian restaurants shouldn't go in the same sentence. Yet, somehow, dumpling cafe managed to stoop to a new low when they not only forgot to place an order, but proceeded to charge the dinner price for this order when they finally remembered. Keep in mind, I came in with my girlfriend well before 4PM (around 3:40) in order to get their lunch specials, which is normally $5 cheaper than their dinner prices. Still, because the waitress remember to placed this order after 4PM, they believed that it should be charged for dinner instead. Regardless, their food has never really let me down, which is why I still give them a total of 3 stars. My best advice is to either come in with someone who speaks Chinese, or just keep your orders as simple as possible. read more

There is no heavy or greasy additives - it's light and always comes out HOT. They are not super friendly or cordial - but who cares, the food is good. I came here with four friends on a Sunday night and we each paid only $14 including tax and tip. We ordered five dishes: pork xiao long baos (soup dumplings), beef with long horn pepper, homestyle tofu, peapods stem with garlic, and scallion pancake. We were looking forward to trying the soup dumplings first as it is the appetizer, but it didn't come until after all our entrees. I have to say, these soup dumplings are subpar... for a dumpling cafe, how could your dumplings be the worst dish on the table? The best part of the soup dumplings is the soup, but the pork was too fatty in certain bites and the skin too doughy and sticky. When my chopstick touched the dumpling skin and I VERY lightly pulled away, the skin stuck to the chopstick and ripped immediately. And it ripped again when I picked it up because the skin stuck to the spoon as well. The soup spilled out when the dumpling ripped and you're supposed to drink the soup from the dumpling and eat it together... The beef with long horn pepper and homestyle tofu were two dishes that I thought were decent. The beef was cooked perfectly, yet too spicy for what I can handle. The homestyle tofu was delish with bamboo, tofu and mushroom - tasted like home cooked food, but portion was a little smaller. The peapods stem with garlic was first of all, SO EXPENSIVE ($16 - we did not realize) and it's merely veggies overloaded with oil (it's so oily that it's shiny) and a few little pieces of minced garlic. Lastly, the scallion pancake was a little doughy and not pan fried long enough, but I guess that can be a good thing because it's healthier. It went really well with the sauce it came with. Overall, if you have to come here, get the appetizers and entree dishes - they're decent. But you can find better soup dumplings elsewhere. We came with some friends who know some of the good spots to go to in Chinatown. As soon as they said dumplings we were in! When we arrived there was no wait and we were seated at a table with two women who happily ate. We ordered food to share amongst the four of us. We had an eggplant dish with a sauce that was pretty tasty. Seafood fried rice, pan fried flat noodles with beef, fried dumplings and steamed soup dumplings. Everything was delicious. I think the dumplings are worth a try if you come. Service was not too impressive, our waitress never came by to check on us. But we had a nice time catching up with friends that we didn't need anything else, so this wasn't too much of a problem for us! We went as a group of four and were able to sample a bit of everything: scallion pancakes (both with and without beef), roast duck pan fried buns, flounder hot pot, beef with longhorn pepper, and beef flat noodle stir fry. Everything was very tasty. The scallion pancake rolled with beef had a tad too much hoisin sauce and was thus too sweet for our tastes.
