Dublin Skylon Hotel
We stayed there for two weeks from mid to end of May. I highly recommend this hotel.
It was hard deciding on a hotel in a country we've never been to and we didn't want to spend weeks trying to find the right hotel. Here's what we knew about the Skylon before booking, which is why we chose them:
Affordable rates. I don't remember exactly but it was less than $200 USD per ninght. Other places were $225, $250 or more.
Normal sized room. Some places we looked up seemed to have really small rooms, almost claustrophobic small. Dublin was our based for the entire two weeks. We traveled to different parts of Ireland but always returned to Dublin the same night, so it was important to be comfortable in the room.
Right on the bus line, served by multiple buses. 20-30 minute ride into Dublin center (depending on which part you were going to as the bus will hit traffic once it gets in that area)
Far away enough from the center area that we felt comfortable utilizing a rental car (not to drive into Dublin, that'd be crazy lol but to drive to different parts of Ireland).
They had parking onsite (no valet, $10 Euro day). For some other hotels closer to Dublin, we'd have had to walk a bit to get from the hotel to the car, nope! lol
The following are my observations after having been in the room for two weeks. They are pretty much just my random thoughts. I'm sharing in case it's useful to anyone but I provide the caveat that some might seem silly.
PROs
Hotel, while nothing to look at from the outside (just a big square lol), it seemed polished and modern on the inside, not dingy or run down in any way.
Room had a fridge (and a mini freezer space inside that fridge) and a safe.
If you're travelling from the U.S., the front desk can provide you with converters so that you can plug in your devices.
In addition to being right on the bus line, you could walk to Dublin center in maybe 45 minutes if you so choose (we did enough walking during the day so that wasn't an option for us). There's many eateries and pubs around. There's a grocery store (Lidl) just half block away. Lots of little shops you can walk to down Drumcondra Street and the DART was even within a 15 minute walk.
Bathroom had one outlet and there was a USB port on either side of the bed (in addition to an outlet on either side of the bed as well).
CONs
There aren't really "cons" per'se, but not sure what else to call them.
No shower door. I've never seen a bathroom with no shower door. I was convinced I was going to flood the bathroom. After the first shower I was used to it, no problem, never flooded the bathroom ... not even "that one time, in band camp lol" ... My wife told me that's like a "thing" in Europe. I dunno.
No fan in the bathroom. In the U.S., I've never come across a bathroom in a hotel that didn't have a ceiling fan to help air out the bathroom. Another first for me.
Miscommunication regarding vegan food. I had reached out to them over two months before booking to ask if they had vegan options. They said they did but aside from oatmeal and fruit cups, they really didn't. They did have vegetarian sausages, which was good they had them, but our server said they weren't vegan, although she didn't seem particularly interested in helping so I'm not convinced she was correct. I spoke with the Front Desk and they said they'd look into it further and leave a message on our phone either way, so we'd know if options existed but they never did reach out. This wasn't a huge deal by any stretch but also, they dropped the ball in that aspect.
Tiny sink lol. Come to find out, All of Dublin (and probably, Europe) have tiny sinks. Again, this isn't a complaint, just a funny observation on my part as I had no idea.
No dresser draws. There's space to hang your clothers and shelf space to put folded clothes but there are no draws, none. That was kinda weird and a bit frustrating, didn't expect that. We worked around it but would have been nice to have.
The switch to the bathroom light is on the other side of the bathroom door. Usually the switch is right inside the bathroom or just outside the bathroom. Here, you had to go around the door to flip the switch, then go back around the door into the bathroom.
No microwave. It would have been nice to have one, wasn't a big deal that we didn't. It wasn't a big deal enough that we thought to check the amenities list before booking. Just an fyi in case that's important to you.
Parking. They have plenty of parking but if you're parking your car after 8pm, there might not be spots. Also, some of the spots, especially in the garage...are super tight. Bring your patience and "A" game when trying to get into or out of spots from there.
Overall, the experience there was great and if we're visiting Dublin again, we'd have no issues staying there. read more
