However, the entertainment more than made up for it. The band were excellent giving us renditions of all the cheesy performers we know and love complete with change of costumes. We were treated to Tom Jones, Joe Dolan, Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble, and the finale was Elvis. I was dying of a hangover and have to take my hats off to the lead singer who belted out the numbers. There is something comforting watching people enjoying themselves, tettering on ridiculously high heels, protecting their dignity as they reefed their mini dresses down over their arses.. Would I recommend it for a Christmas party...... most definately, suits all ages, special offers on rooms for the night and the ballroom has had an overhaul so is now very pretty with fancy schmancy chandeliers and swaggy curtains. One drawback was the bar didn't accept laser but reception were giving cash on laser so panic averted.

The area felt safe during the day and evening, although there were some homeless people across the street. The smokers plant themselves by the entrance to the hotel so beware if you dislike that smell as I do. There are two restaurants in the hotel, one across from the front desk and Toddy's to the left of the hotel. Check-in was straightforward, and the staff stored our luggage while we explored. Our rooms weren't ready when we arrived, which was before check-in time. But they said it would be ready in 2-3 hours and they would notify us. We didn't hear from them but decided to come back after two hours & our room was then ready. The room was a good size and included a king bed, refrigerator, kettle, safe, toiletries, hair dryer, iron, desk, TV, and plenty of outlets. Note that they use both the EU plug and the UK plug in Ireland. When we checked in there are black fluff / lint all over the floor. But staff thoroughly cleaned the floor the next day. The bathroom looked nice with a marble like tile and had a low-entry shower. Though the shower seal allowed some water to leak onto the floor. The sofa was not good. The cushions kept sliding off so we avoided sitting on the sofa. Wi-Fi was easy to set up, and the breakfast buffet offered plenty of hot and cold choices. Gluten-free and some special hot items had to be requested from the servers. There is no pool, and we didn't use the gym or room service. The temperature controls were somewhat confusing, but a porter showed us how to use them. The hotel also has two attached restaurants and sells travel adapters at the front desk. Our room faced an interior courtyard and was quiet, with a comfortable mattress and effective blackout curtains. However, the pillows were too soft. There was a flickering light on the ceiling that would have kept me up. Thankfully I had a sleep mask to cover my eyes. The hotel is expensive in my opinion, but the location and excellent porter/concierge service made our stay worthwhile. Staff were especially helpful with restaurant recommendations and other requests. The waitstaff in the breakfast room were also nice. The hotel is also convenient for organized tours. Accessibility might be an issue for some. There are 3 steps to get to the entrance and 3 steps down to the breakfast room. I didn't notice a wheelchair ramp anywhere. Keep in mind the history of the Gresham. The hotel was originally three Georgian townhouses that were eventually connected. So some floor layouts feel unusual. To get to the parking garage you have to switch elevators. Overall, this hotel was worth it for us. I had a discount and our tour pick up spot was right in front of the Gresham so it was convenient for us. I'd say this hotel works best for adults and tour groups rather than budget travelers. I don't recall seeing any kids here during our stay. To avoid disappointment though, you should request a specific room type when booking if the layout or view matters to you. The property itself is nice, clean and well maintained.

Entering the hotel, I appreciated a sleek and pleasant lobby that features plenty of seating in which to relax. The decor pays homage to Dublin's most iconic structures; an artistic skyline adorns the wall behind the front desk. The staff here is most helpful. When the battery of my rental car died, they graciously helped me contact the airport rental desk to obtain a new vehicle. I also enjoyed the Hilton's breakfast offerings, which featured delicious poached eggs and Irish hash browns. I highly recommend both. Finally, the rooms themselves are modern and fairly spacious by European standards. One room was sufficient for my family of four. Word to the wise: Americans would be well advised to bring electrical outlet adapters to charge their phones. Apparently the outlets here are different from those in the states. A day has passed and I noticed that my credit card was charged for over $2k - oddly the same amount for what hotel.com charged me. I showed a person in the front desk and they told me they did not charge my credit card. I called the credit card company and they told me that the transaction was from Hilton Garden Inn. This is hard to believe that someone in that hotel would charge me twice for the room and not see the charges. Other than this extra charge, the room was good and clean. Beware of this. There is a nice spread of continental breakfast goodies - croissants, pastries, yogurt, juices, cured meats, cheese, etc that you can pick from in addition to the full Irish or full veggie breakfast. I highly recommend it. Front desk staff were nice and professional. They called taxis for me whenever I need one, and were helpful with directions. Hotel location is perfect - within walking distance to Merrion square, Trinity College, Grafton Street area, and the river Liffey. I selected an Executive suite room and it was the size of a standard hotel room in USA, but that is to be expected in all European hotels. I can only imagine the size of the standard or single room - they are probably the size of a closet in a Marriott Courtyard hotel in America. Overall, it was a fantastic stay. The heating and cooling unit seemed to have tantrums and would spew out hot or cold air without the touch of a button. The last straw was when the housekeeper managed to rip the cable cord out of the wall which resulted in no television service. The television itself stopped powering on or off soon after the cable cord was marred. The location of the hotel was great--very close to the Government House, Trinity College, and within walking distance of Temple Bar and the shopping district. The people were nice and knowledgeable about what Dublin has to offer. But this is by no means a 4-star hotel. I would consider staying there again, but I would look into other options before choosing the O'Callaghan Alexander.

The four of us (grandparents with two 9 your old grandchildren) stayed one night in the family room (two twins and a queen) and later two nights in two rooms (a double and a better double, both with queen sized beds). The smaller room was small, but room enough to sit in a sofa chair and at a desk with chair. The larger room was even nicer. The front desk was welcoming and amiable. The breakfast was very well done, with a cooked breakfast option (including a well done 'full Irish breakfast') and one had the option of continental breakfast in a small buffet. We did all of the above. Next we visit Dublin, we will make it a point to star at Wynn's.
