If I could do no stars, I would've! This place was horrible to my friends and I. The sushi was alright, it was subpar to say the least. They did not check up on us at all. There were a lot of bugs around our table which ruined the experience. Not only that, but they added tip to our bill! They also barely gave the wrong change to my friend. They forced us to tip a certain amount, denied us our change, and gave us dirty looks constantly as we were eating. The sushi chef was nice, but the ladies were extremely unhelpful and messed up my receipt multiple times and acted like it was my fault. These other reviews are scam!!!! Pretty good sushi, but not the best in the area. Average value and good service, though a bit slow. Sushi was fresh. Rolls are generous, but the special rolls rely too much on mayos and sauces, which takes away from the flavor. They're also very focused on cooked/tempura or spicy varieties of sushi. Would have liked to see more fresh fish options on the special rolls. A good option if you're local. read more

Tricky place to rate. Based on the reviews here, I came with high hopes. Overall, had a mixed experience, with great strength exhibited in one area, and weakness in another. The food is the area of strength. Of the roughly 10 items our party ordered, virtually everything was very good. Standouts included the tornado roll, the spider roll, several of the basic veggie rolls, and the pan-fried gyoza. The tempura ice cream didn't taste much different than other places, but the serving size was 50% larger than I've seen it at most places. The only item that disappointed was the jalapeno yellowtail, which I've had far better examples of elsewhere. The problem here is that the restaurant is kind of a dump. The carpet has a damp, sticky feel to it and the entire place just needs a major cleaning. Secondly, on a recent March night, the restaurant was freezing inside; we were all wearing either sweaters or hoodies over our shirts/tops, and were still freezing. The woman at the table nearest ours just kept her coat on through her meal. There's also no music playing and very little background noise, so people's conversations are highly audible. Finally, the place was understaffed. Only one waitress and one woman helping out in the dining room and handling the takeout business, with 1.5 guys working the sushi bar (the 0.5 because one guy kept disappearing for stretches, presumably working the kitchen as well). The waitress was trying, but inevitably, it took forever to get our drinks, check on us for refills, etc.. Probably because of these issues, Dozo appears to do a lot of their business as takeout -- at one point, there were some 4 parties in the restaurant waiting for their orders. Some of these folks were offered glasses of water while they waited, which seemed nice, but I found it bothersome that we were still waiting for our drinks, ordered some 10+ minutes ago. I might suggest that dine-in patrons be served before takeouts are offered a complimentary drink If they could clean up the place, run the heat to at least get the temperature into the mid 60s, and have another person on the waitstaff, Dozo could be 5 stars...the food is that good. read more

All I can say is WOW! This place was way better than we expected. The location (in a strip mall next to a busy intersection) did not give us great expectations, but we were more than pleasantly surprised. We were greeted immediately upon walking in the door and served with hot towels. The waitress took our drink order and brought it over swiftly. We had the unfiltered cold sake, and it was delicious. We started off with green salads with ginger dressing, and they were very tasty. Then we had the most heavenly gyoza, which were the best I've ever had. We followed up with chicken & vegetable tempura and drunken noodles. Both were incredibly good. We topped off the evening with tempura ice cream (we chose vanilla) and our minds were blown. We will definitely come back to try other dishes, but the dishes we had will linger in our minds long after tonight. Highly recommended! read more

You know how you always want to go downtown for closeness and walkability? Don't. This place has the freshest sushi in a warm cozy environment with great service. You can tell that they not only care about quality but about speed and presentation. If you are eating at other sushi places around New Haven....make the trek out to Amity for the best sushi at reasonable prices. Since moving to New Haven almost 10 years ago, I haven't had sushi that compares. read more

Good sushi. Nice service. But, not as good as the other reviews would say. I thought the udon noodles in soup I had last time was mediocre and very disappointing. I had been hesitant to try Dozo since I wasn't a fan of the previous restaurant. I am SO glad that we gave it a go! We had the wasabi tuna for an app. It was REALLY tasty but it could have been spicier (personal preference). The tuna was really fresh and melted in my mouth. We then shared the fancy Tornado roll which was delicious along with a regular salmon and avocado roll. Again, everything was really fresh tasting. Another hint that this place is worth it was it was really busy for a Monday evening. We also shared a few hot sake's. I loved that they brought out the bottle submerged in a container of hot water. It was such a treat to have it stay hot to the last drop! We'll definitely be back! read more

Dozo was a great surprise for us as we just were in the area. The owner and sushi chef were very friendly, environment was also quite comfortable. Their sushi was fresh and very well presented. I would highly recommend their hand rolls. Besides the Japanese food, their curry chicken and beef were fantastic. Very full of flavor but not overwhelming. Pretty disappointed with Dozo. The food is good, even very good, but the people here are just not nice. Service is poor, even with few people in the place. Don't expect refills on iced tea. When I questioned why I had been charged for a refill the owner (?) was called over to explain to me that her menu didn't say free refills on iced tea so I should expect to be charged and that was fine if I was upset and didn't want to come back. Really sad about this encounter. I must have ordered only water the last time I was here. read more

Drove here from Shelton because of the 4.5 star review. I got sake/maguro/fluke nigiri and a spicy tuna roll. Maguro was pretty standard, and fluke was to replace the salmon that I couldn't finish. Salmon was very fishy but they were nice enough to replace my salmon with the fluke and not charge me for either. The spicy tuna roll was actually very good and my dad loved his roll - he got a special roll that he was bonkers for. Over all I'd give this spot a 3.7 and customer service was good. read more

I usually go to Dozo for weekday lunch, so this is based on lots of those times. Service is always fantastic. My man Benny the sushi chef always hooks it up with a smile! There's a lot of sushi places that have that same weird 8-piece sushi lunch combo with dried out fish and/or a California roll. Blaaaaaah. The lunch roll specials here are awesome. You can pick 2 or 3 rolls off a long list of choices that come with delicious miso soup and ginger-dressed salad. As they say, you gotta be fresh! read more

The ambiance for Saturday lunch was dark and quiet. This contrasted with some of the clientele who were speaking far too loudly. I can't help but wonder if for this time of day the mood that the restaurant is trying to capture us just not approptiate. The food itself was fine, but not special. Everything tasted fresh. The tempura was crisp, the rice was well cooked, and the chicken was not tough. But the flavors were off. The soup was too sweet, the dressing lacked citrus, the chicken had too much black pepper, and the teriyaki was too wattery and lacked the rich flavors that one expects.
