Yummy sushi as always! I went for a solo date. Half priced sushi is always a plus! Dine-in only. I paired it with a delicious Mango Martini (not frozen) so be sure to ask that. I am always pleased here, do yourself a favor and go!

Great food at an affordable price. Friendly and prompt service. Classic ambiance. We love to come here for weekend lunches!

There was a bandaid in my food. They took no accountability and asked us if we ordered from somewhere else even when we showed our receipt. Wish I could give them 0 stars, I will never order from here again.

I haven't visited Sakura in a while but was quickly reminded why I liked it in the past. It's decor and ambience is great. We had hibachi. The food and prices are average. I don't like having to pay $3.00 extra for noodles!!!! This is one of the reasons I don't visit as often as there are other places where I can get both rice and noodles. My family loves the rice AND noodles and paying $3.00 extra per person is like having another child/adult to feed. Seriously, a family of 4 or 5 adds an extra $12-15 to the bill. Enough about that....lol I love how the hibachi area is separate from the regular dinning and bar area. You don't feel like you're packed on top of each other. The tables and chairs are high so you feel like you have a great view of the table. I don't drink but my husband likes the beer selections and the couple dinning with us liked the drinks from the bar. The hostess is always nice during my visits and you are not sitting and waiting forever for service. There's a watermill which is cool. The kids throw coins in it for good luck.

My daughter and I came here for Mother's Day lunch. We liked the ambiance of the restaurant. We stated off with miso soup which was good. We then had soft shell crab and vegetable roll appetizers. Followed by a variety of hand rolled sushi. Everything was very good and we will be back.

    Hibachi Shrimp with fried rice

My boyfriend and I visited on New Years Eve and had hibachi served at the table. Overall service and food was great! We started with a scorpion bowl which was very good but very sweet. For appetizers we had Honey bbq Spare Ribs and Crab Rangoons. They were both AMAZING- definitely the best Chinese food we have had in Hamden. The hibachi served at the table was all very good except the fried rice tasted a little old. Overall I can't wait to come back and try the sushi and more!

My family and I were very happy by our experience here overall, It was our very first visit & we chose to experience the hibachi side of the restaurant There is a big parking lot! We called about an hour in advance to reserve a table for 10, they do accept reservations! We were greeted & sat immediately upon arriving The Hibachi Entrees are served with a mushroom soup, salad, fried or white rice, Shrimp Appetizer & Vegetables. You have the option to add noodles for $3 extra. The mushroom soup has fried onions inside and it was really good despite the fact that I don't like mushrooms or fried onions. The food was absolutely delicious!!! Some of the entrees we ordered are: Chicken & Shrimp $23 + $3 Noodles = $26 Steak & Shrimp $24 Steak & Salmon $24 I tasted them all! & My favorite was as follows: Steak, Chicken, Salmon, Shrimp The noodles were good but not my cup of tea. My mom loved it, so you may too. :) They have a kids menu (ages 11 & under) I attached a photo - my nephew ordered two rolls for $8 -The tuna roll & chicken tempura, he really enjoyed them! Now, The experience with our chef was really great, it was some of my family members first time experiencing hibachi and they loved it, all the kids loved it too. Our chef put on such a great show, he was very kind to the kids and he was very engaging and entertaining. Overall, I did not give them 5 stars because we never received our shrimp appetizer that was supposed to come with the entree or the edamame's that we ordered. I do recommend & look forward to coming back and trying their drinks & other items on the menu. Thank you for the experience :)

I've now been to Sakura twice! I went the first time and did the half price sushi (it says it's only certain dates and times but it's really all the time). Sushi was fresh and the first time we were right at the counter watching them make it. The second time we sat at a table near the bar. I ordered the pad Thai and originally wasn't terribly impressed, but it grew on me. The appetizers were good - although the shrimp tempura was a little weird. It was very greasy and came with a bunch of tempura fried... stuff. We had mushrooms, broccoli and a bunch of squash. It was 3 pieces of shrimp and really wasn't my thing. My stepdad really liked his fried rice though. It came with chicken, shrimp, and steak. He said it was delicious and even better with soy sauce. Overall, I think they have decent pad Thai, but I'd go for the half price sushi over anything else they have.

Pack your bags Kumo.........there's a new hibachi/ sushi joint in town! I don't know where to begin here, there is so much going on. Just walking in I was taken back by the size of this place...very spacious. The owner(?)/host was super friendly as he greeted everyone who walked in. We explained how we were two out of a party of 8 and were a little early for our reservations. He happily led us over to the bar. The bar area is huge. Dark, nice date spot. We decided on Zentini and a hot sake. The bartender was very friendly and attentive. Wasabi peanuts were set out in dishes at the bar....dangerously addictive. The rest of the party made their way in and the host comped our drinks for "being Red Sox fans" and took us to our grill table. I loved these tables... they were bar height. It was a nice effect for hibachi, as opposed to always feeling slouched in a chair. The menu was your average hibachi , extensive traditional Japanese offerings and an impressive sushi menu. Grilled chicken, the fillet, lobster, scallops were all ordered hibachi style. You are given the soup, salad, shrimp appetizer, fried rice and veggie side. The chef was funny and did all of the typical hibachi jokes. A few people at the table opted for sushi roll appetizers, to include myself. We were so happy that we did. Everything was fresh, innovative and excellent. The RED SOX Roll, was a lobster mango roll. The YANKEES Roll was shrimp tempura wrapped with spicy salmon and covered in avocado and the PASSION Roll was seared pepper white tuna with mango and seaweed salad and drizzled with Thai chili sauce. Amazing! We were all entirely too stuffed to try anything for dessert, but we will be back. This place has left a great impression on us all!

A small, cozy restaurant that is decorated to full anime vibes: anime art covering the walls from floor to ceiling for favorites like One Piece, Dragon Ball, and many more (how many can you name), dividers, lanterns, cherry blossoms - it's a total vibe! The menu is small, but has a variety from entrees, sushi, noodles, and shareable appetizers. There were specials as well that we took advantage of and ended up with a lot of food. My husband and I shared the Yukitori Platter, something that I haven't seen before on a menu. It's a Japanese street food that has skewered meat. Our platter had chicken, shrimp, beef, pork, and zucchini and each were very good. My husband got the Gyu Don (which is a beef bowl) and for $5 more, he got the set that included three side dishes and a miso soup. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Udon and made it a Combo for $5 more which included a classic Brown Sugar Bubble Tea and a Pork Bun. I loved my Udon, was flavorful and not too salty. The bubble tea was perfect, even the tapioca pearls weren't too hard or gummy. The service was good, but it was a slow start since there was only one staff member hosting and serving the dining room. It was a little busy with a couple of other tables. The staff were very kind and respectful. The food came out fast after we ordered. Akatsuki is really a hidden gem and it's a must try. Food: Then I tried the rolls and pretty sure I know why. All the rolls are covered in SO much sauce that it's impossible to actually taste the fish. Tuna or Salmon, who knows? The rainbow roll, which I have never had any sauce on in 30+ years of ordering, was covered here. The sad truth is that is typically an indication of using low quality or not so fresh fish. The fish should be able to stand on its own! The yakitori? The beef was not chewable, the pork belly was decent and the scallops were good. Outside of the beef, this may be the only decent edible option. Service: One server, even though it's a small place, it's not enough. Also factor in that he seemed to be somewhat clueless of how the process works. We almost left, as it was 5 minutes before we could get his attention to take our order. The rest of the meal time was not much better. Overall: Seems this place has been open long enough to fix these issues. I guess the owners do not care enough to do so.

At the time, I found the ramen competent and the interior pristine, spacious, and modern. Returning for a second visit, I'm happy to report they have withstood the test of time, maintaining high standards for both food quality and cleanliness. To provide context: when Roishi first opened, it felt like ramen shops were everywhere. Fast-forward a few years, fewer shops remain, and unfortunately, many of those survivors just don't stand out to me. The mid-range sushi scene has proven equally unimpressive. Aside from high-end establishments like Hachiroku Handroll Bar, or the outstanding Gohan in Southington, most mid-range joints disappoint with mediocre quality and a lack of creativity. Many may start off strong in quality, like Niu Sushi in East Haven or Sayori in Orange, but eventually their standards slip over time. In the current food scene in Connecticut, finding a restaurant that excels at both ramen and sushi is a rarity. While I enjoy the Spicy Miso at Akatsuki in Hamden, their sushi remains lackluster. Conversely, from what I recall when they initially opened, the sushi at Takumi in Branford impressed me, but their ramen has disappointed. This is where Roishi shines. Perhaps my previous disappointments at other establishments have made me quick to judge, or maybe I simply caught Roishi on an exceptionally good day. Regardless, our last experience at Roishi has won me over, and it has officially become (for now) my go-to for a satisfying bowl of ramen paired with fresh, creative sushi rolls. It is clear the sushi chefs put effort into curating their menu and making their rolls look visually appealing. Our server was pleasant, professional and attentive without being overbearing. While the menu would benefit from rotating specials featuring higher grade ingredients, the restaurant's ability to maintain standards and consistency is a rarity, and is the primary reason I will continue to return as long as they continue to do so!

Prices run a bit high, but the quality of the ingredients more than make up for it. The Jako Salad (4.5/5) is a favorite of mine. It perfectly mixes peppery arugula and crisp radish with a poached egg, fried baby anchovy, bonito flakes, and nori. The baby anchovy gives a sweet/salty crunch that tastes like my childhood. Every bite swings between fresh and umami in a really creative way. The harasu don (5/5) is pure richness in a rice bowl. Grilled salmon belly and salmon roe together are incredibly rich, almost to the edge of too much, but the warm rice underneath keeps it grounded and turns it into a perfect comfort dish. The giant octopus sashimi (4/5) is a great counterbalance, cleanly sliced with a firm, fresh bite that lightens things up. The fresh tofu with uni (5/5) might be my favorite plate. The tofu is ultra delicate, and the rich uni on top adds a briny depth. With the simple seasonings on the side, it's a savory panna cotta. If they ever did a dessert version with ginger syrup, I would be here daily. Sashimi here is excellent (5/5). You get a balanced mix of fatty cuts like otoro and leaner ones like akami, along with hamachi, katsuo, and octopus. The variety lets you move between clean and rich bites at your own pace. A side note. Every so often a piece of yamamomo shows up on the plate (small red berries), a little mountain peach that is sweet enough to outshine most desserts. It may just be a palette cleanser, but it is a personal 10/5 for me. So good! Both indoor and outdoor seating feel comfortable, and service was on point: kind, attentive, and well timed. Overall, this is a standout Japanese option that I would highly recommend if you're ever in New Haven.

I have also never been to a sake bar. Have to say....I was underwhelmed. We came in last Friday and apparently it was slow because Yale was off (according to our waiter). If a restaurant is good they should not be slow on a Friday night. We sat by the door on a cold night and there were two other couples practically on top of us. Rest of the seating are high tops against a wall by the bar or up the stairs on another level. We would have liked to sit upstairs but they were closing off that area. Menu was complex as the restaurant is authentic Japanese. Lots of beef options. Lots of Wagyu. I was hoping to be blown away by this restaurant trying something different. I was struggling trying to find something to order that sounded appetizing. I knew going in that this place was authentic Japanese but I don't know, nothing sounded great to me. I love mushrooms so I got the Mixed Kinoko Mushroom appetizer which was $15. To add scallops was another $8. Mushrooms were tasty. Scallops were not. $23 for a small dish. I also got the pork short ribs. Not a ton of meat on them, however, nice flavor. I was still hungry after this so I ordered a dessert which was the best part of the meal. They get some of their desserts from Hen & Heifer which is a well established place in Guilford. I got the Ube Panna cotta. Boyfriend got the Black cod Yu-an Yaki and upgraded to add the salad, pickles and rice for $3 more. The pickles were maybe two bites. Salad tasty but again, very small. He said the cod was just ok too. Very small portions and pricey for what you get. $30 for a mini sake flight. Not impressed with how it was served either. Small tasting glasses just placed on the table with no description. The server explained which was which, but I didn't remember. Not sure if he didn't care or this is how it's normally served, but if you go to a wine bar/brewery, they provide descriptions with flights usually written underneath the glass, or at least serve it in something. Not just tiny glasses placed on a table where you have no idea what you're having. Especially for $30! I was not impressed with this place whatsoever. As this is part of a newer restaurant group with a few different locations nearby in New Haven, we then went to their cocktail Lounge on crown street (116 Cocktail Bar) thinking it might be better, however we were equally disappointed. It was dead in there and the bartenders were miserable. They couldn't wait to get out of there. I have heard that their hand roll bar is very good (Handroll on State St). We have been to their Grocery Store called The Loop and it's cute. They have a brunch at the Grocery/Kitchen location that looks really good. They also have a wine lounge at The Loop that I'd like to try.
