I do not give 5 star's easily. I rate not just the food, I rate the service, the cleanliness, I don't care about the ambiance. I care about how I am being treated and is my server smiling, and cordial, and attentive. I am half Japanese and my mom was a Japanese chef. (She was an amazing chef too!) I hardly eat out because I am very picky eater and like to eat fresh, high end foods. I had jury duty and didn't want to cook. So I stopped here at Kumo for takeout Japanese fried rice with shrimp, and chicken, and a little bit of veggies. I never get my hopes up that it would taste amazingly delicious. When I finally entered my home I was so hungry I put a small portion in my rice bowl and added some soy sauce. The color of the rice was kinda lighter than I am used to. OMG! That first bite surprised me so much that I decided that my rice bowl was just too small. I took out a plate and filled up the plate. The shrimp and chicken was so tender, and they use higher quality traditional Japanese rice. I think it's Koshihikari slightly sweet, sticky, with a strong umami flavor. I never over eat, I hate that feeling of being stuffed and can't move. So I only eat until I am satisfied. But tonight I couldn't put down my chopsticks! I finally found a place that I would feel comfortable knowing that I am surely getting authentic Japanese food. So many times when going to a Japanese restaurant it's disappointing that they are serving Chinese food and saying that it's Japanese. Thank you for the wonderful experience, and the hospitality. Food is always great, and fresh. They have a great selection and always a good value for what you get.

This place really knows what they're doing when it comes to flavor. Everything is cooked so well that when I go to other places in the city I WISH they tasted like this. Especially the soup! The drinks here are pretty good too as well as their desserts. The service here is friendly and quick, they make sure to get everything done efficiently especially when there's a crowd of people. I always come here in a group and everyone's order is always correct. I love that this place is clean, spacious and well decorated. I recommend for birthdays or literally any occasion. ALWAYS eat here when we come through Connecticut. Believe it or not when we moved out of CT we compare all sushi restaurants with Kumo. They don't have the fanciest atmosphere but it's clean and kept up but it more than makes this up on the food end. Sushi's always fresh, tasty and not overloaded with rice. Overall I would classify this restaurant as average. The salmon sushi was delicious though the other bites were average. The prices were quite reasonable. Pretty decent sushi. Let it be known that I am not a seafood person at all. Not a single piece of seafood, nothing. Nada. So I do like avocado rolls and cucumber and who doesn't love a mixture. Ordered here as it's close by and I enjoyed it. What you see are actually 4 orders of each cucumber and avocado rolls and then avocado rolls by themselves. What I will say is that with a large order, I felt the actual size of the rolls were small, considering the quantity. I've ordered from other nearby places and this amount would've been quite larger. I stopped at this spot for a nice dinner on Valentine's. Food: As an Asian visiting the area, I was really looking for some comfort food. The filet mignon and shrimp combo hit the spot. It was also great that they had sushi options for appetizers. We got the New York roll, Gozilla roll, and Tiffany roll. The New York roll was a hit. Service: The wait staff were friendly and attentive. It was nice that they checked in with us throughout the meal. Our chef did not disappoint! I've had good food from this restaurant in the past, so I decided to try them again. I started out liking the sushi very much, but things changed as I continued. I'll start with what they did right. The spicy tuna roll was flavorful and the tuna was fresh. The Manhattan roll was cheesy, savory and delicious. I liked the Ultimate Veggie Roll because not many places have a vegetable-based roll on their special menu. It was crispy and the mayo sauce was great. The samurai roll was tasty and I liked how the eel and cream cheese complimented each other. The spicy dragon roll was my favorite: all flavors in the roll melded together nicely and it was very well done. If that's all I ordered, I would have given this place a 4. However, I ordered one other roll: the White House roll. The lobster tasted unusually fishy and it just seemed like something was off about it; it didn't seem fresh. I couldn't even finish it and my stomach started hurting slightly afterwards. I was so disappointed that I didn't take the final picture (the spicy dragon roll and White House roll were in the same container), but I took a picture of my receipt as proof that I bought and tried it. I called the establishment and they flat out told me that they weren't going to compensate me. That roll was the most expensive one I purchased. I don't complain to restaurants very often and I felt like they didn't care enough about my complaint. Minus one star for the bad sushi roll, minus another star for the bad customer service. I just experienced the most disrespectful, rude treatment while waiting for my takeout order. There were several people waiting to pick up Uber Eats or DoorDash orders, all standing in line. Then, this skinny Asian guy with glasses--who seems to be a manager or owner--comes out with completed orders. When a customer politely asked him about their Uber Eats order, this guy had the nerve to wave his hand dismissively right in their face, basically telling them to wait, and then immediately handed a ready order to someone else. The level of disrespect was disgusting and infuriating. If this is how they treat customers, don't waste your time or money here. You'll see for yourself how terribly this man handles things. Don't listen to the negative people... I was in New Haven for research on a book and out at Stop and Shop driving around to conjure memories. Pier One still standing but vacant. Sad! With a few hours to kill before moving into the Taft AirBnB (Kasa), I decided to get some groceries and hit the Dollar Store by the old Bradlee's. There isn't as much sushi in New Haven as there used to be (Miya gone and Hatsune/Samurai vacant) so I Yelped "sushi near me" and realized this was just a block or two from Stop and Shop. I was alone pretty much. Few were eating inside then but I survived NYC during the pandemic volunteering 4 days a week when 800 a day dying , so I wasn't afraid of little old New Haven numbers. I passed this place more times than I can count. After looking over the menu online a few times, I decided to go in. My friend and I went on New Year's Day. When we arrived there was a lot of seating, but people began to trickle in. I ordered the spicy California roll, The New Haven roll & the White House roll. All very very good. And plated very nicely. We usually choose the Kumo location downtown, but opted for the one in Hamden instead. My bf's appetizer tasted and looked like it was nuked - it literally looked like chicken nuggets from the freezer. I barely had any wasabi or ginger for my meal.. it was buried under the rice. Also, no chopsticks included with the order. My sashimi was so sad-looking... there was only one little mound of rice and MUCH smaller pieces of fish. We will not return here for takeout or dine in again. I get that everyone's hurting, but the quality of your food needs to stay the same or you will lose customers. Please note that I am Japanese, so calibrate my comments accordingly. Rice was very poor quality. Too chewy and it tasted like glue Nori seaweed was stale, not crispy at all, chewy. I'm not even sure it was sushi nori that they were using. Positives: * dirt cheap with the half-price sushi. * Green tea was flavorful, free, and refilled often. Negatives: Dirt cheap means the sushi tasted like processed glue and sat in my stomach like a stone. This is yet another restaurant that I wish Chef Gordon Ramsay would visit to whip into shape. I was in the area with family and we stopped by this place for lunch. Great sushi options. Being vegetarian and gluten-free can be hard at times at Japanese restaurants. I had the asparagus roll, vegetable roll, they ran out of sweet potatoes but I had a mushroom roll, and finally a cucumber and avocado roll. Was in the mood for sushi for lunch and needed a place that would be quick and easy, as well as inexpensive. Found it! We had a menu at work so we chose to order lunch specials from here. Now in the past at other places sushi lunch can take a while so I was a little worried, but when they said 15 minutes before the order was ready I couldn't believe my ears. We had a relatively medium sized order, and when I went to pick up, the order was ready!! I tried the two roll lunch special with the salad and although the salad was good the rolls were really good. For some reason their Boston roll was melt in your mouth deliciousness and I was in heaven. And for the price, the food can't be beat. The location is right on skiff street in Hamden with plenty of parking. The inside decor is nice and clean, I didn't spend a lot of time inside but would definitely be back to try sitting inside. I may be writing this review in the heat of the moment, but I have some time because I'm waiting for my entire takeout order to be remade because they gave the order we called in to the wrong person, who was called to come back and exchange it for her actual order. As much as I liked getting takeout from here because it's a convenient stop on my way home and sushi is half price, it's less convenient when they just give orders to the wrong people, so I have to update my review to one star less. I also can't be 100% sure that the sushi I'm receiving isn't the same returned order that the other customer came back and exchanged after driving away with it in her car.
